Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our respon-sibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so...please re-member in your prayers:

A Prayer for the Armed Forces Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each

day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“…for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 18:14 Do we exalt ourselves? We do if we think that we get credit for any of the good things in our lives. As stewards it is important that we remember that every good thing on this earth is a gift from God. We should be humbled by God’s abundant generosity. Our hearts should be filled with grati-tude.

Leadership and discipline Parents set aside fatigue, anxiety, laziness and temp-tations to take things for granted – putting off duties ahead of self-centered pursuits. They correct their children’s faults, not them personally. They know the dictum,” Hate the sin, not the sinner.” They combine correction and punishment with affectionate forgive-ness, understanding and encouragement. They do this personally and effectively. Talking to them in a gentle manner and touching their conscience and their innate sense of goodness have been found to be more effective than corporal punishment or harsh and hurting words. Be firm but gentle. Never allow bad humor in the home. Always be care-ful with your words – no sarcasm, no insults, no de-meaning remarks. Never destroy the self-esteem of your child. Speak with authority without being nar-row-minded. Mom and dad should never fear to be “unpopular” with their children. Your child may be sulking with bruised feelings from your correction but his long-time happiness is more valuable. The important thing is the “why” and not the “how” of their punishment. In the future, the children will look back and thank their parents for their steadfast guidance.

A Christian-centered home A Christian home has Christ in the center. Teach your children piety and love of God. Formation does not simply entail academic education but a very important part of human formation is the acquisition of virtues. Virtues are repeated good habits such as charity, humility, patience, perseverance, honesty, justice, generosity, fidelity, kindness, cheerfulness, graciousness etc. If they are trained everyday in good habits and good manners, then these habits become virtues. Formation also entails making them realize and understand to behave with integrity and human elegance. Human elegance is the air found in the extraordinary finesse of a person in treating others. Our behavior, even in times of recreation, is always characterized by polite manners, eagerness to serve others, cordiality and pleasantness. St. Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei advised: “Cultivate the art of pleasantness. Be courteous in dealing with others and avoid arrogance. Be generous. Never be an icy model that others admire but not love.” In the end, parents will see their greatest accomplishment in the form of virtuous, good-hearted, well-behaved and God-fearing children. A great reward is waiting for them in heaven.

E very day in the Church calendar has a saint day, but the Solemnity of All Saints is when the Church honors all saints, known and unknown. This is much like the American holidays Veterans Day and Presidents Day, where many people are honored on one day. While we have information about many saints, and we honor them on specific days, there are many unknown or unsung saints, who may have been forgotten, ornever been specifically honored. On All Saints Day, we cele- brate these saints of the Lord, and ask for their prayers and intercessions. The whole concept of All Saints Day is tied in withthe concept of the Communion of Saints. This is the belief that all of God's people, on heaven, earth, and in the state of purification (called Purgatory in the West), are connected in a communion. In other words, Catholic and Orthodox Christians believe that the saints of God are just as alive as you and I, and are constantly interceding on our behalf. Remember, our connection with the saints in heaven is one grounded in a tight-knit communion. The saints are not divine, nor omnipresent or omniscient. However, because of our common communion with and through Jesus Christ, our prayers are joined with the heavenly community of Christians.

A ll Souls Day follows All Saints Day, and solemnly commemorates the faithful departed, i.e. those who die with God's grace and friendship. Catholics believe that not all those who die in God's grace are immediately ready for the Beatific vision, i.e. the reality and goodness of God and heaven, so they must be purified of "lesser faults," and the temporal effects of sin. The Catholic Church calls this purification of the elect, "purgatory." The Catholic teaching on Purgatory essentially requires belief in two realities: 1. that there will be a purifi- cation of believers prior to entering heaven and 2. that the prayers and masses of the faithful in some way benefit those in the state of purification. As to the duration, place, and exact nature of this purification, the Church has no official dogma, although Saint Augustine and others used fire as a way to explain the nature of the purification. Many faithful Catholics, including Pope Benedict XVI, grant that Purgatory may be best thought of as an existential state, as opposed to a temporal place . Nonetheless, the prayers and Masses of the faithful do have an impact on the purifi- cation that the faithful are undergoing in Purgatory. As a more everyday explanation, many liken Purgatory to a place or state where one gets "cleaned up" before entering into the presence of Almighty God.

“Two people went up to the temple area to pray…” So Jesus begins the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. It reminds me of the old “two guys walk into a bar” line that tells everyone a bad joke is coming. Like two guys walk into a bar and sit down to eat their lunches. The bartender says, “Sorry. You can’t eat your own food in here.” So the guys look at each other and swap lunches. Or, two guys walk into a bar; the third one ducks. Or even, a priest and a rabbi walk into a bar. The bartender says, “What is this, some kind of joke?” No, but if we are honest with ourselves by recognizing that on our bad prayer days we emulate the Pharisee more than we’d like to admit, then we may each find a bit of cruel humor tucked away inside this well-known passage. One of the two men going to the temple area to pray is a tax collector. He’s a bad guy, especially to his fellow Jews. An on-line biblical site explains it this way: “The tax collectors were usually Jewish and therefore they were hated by their own people. When they collected their taxes for Rome they would turn over the required amount of money, and whatever they could add on for themselves is what they kept. They were known to be extortioners of large sums of money. Because tax collectors were in relationship with Rome, who were Gentiles in the eyes of the Jews, and hated for their domination, they were treated similar to the worst kinds of sinners and prostitutes.” So what is this man’s prayer at the back of the temple? “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

The other guy going into the temple area to pray is a Pharisee. He’s organized religion, which is not a bad thing, but by all accounts, his colleagues and he follow the letter of their religious creed, not the spirit of it, which is a bad thing. Really, though, is his prayer itself all that bad? I mean, he stands before God and speaks his gratitude for many of the blessings in his life. You and I surely do the same. Or should. Besides, this Pharisee is keeping alive many of Israel’s traditions under the oppression of Roman rule, which again is not a bad thing. As an old edition of my Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers puts it, “Without Pharisees like him, Judaism may have dwindled and died after the Romans burned and destroyed the temple in 70 A.D.” Jesus says that the tax collector goes home justified, which by my interpretation means that he goes home right with God, the place we all want to be. But look closely at the Pharisee side of the story and you’ll see an interesting word choice, at least an interesting interpretation of the original text. Per my bible and per the Seasonal Missalette, “The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity.’” He spoke this prayer to himself… Common usage tells us that he spoke the prayer quietly. But literal usage tells us that he prayed to himself, and for self-serving reasons. Goofy word play, true, but interesting nonetheless. Two guys walk into a temple. One guy prays to himself. The other guy prays to God for mercy and is justified. No joke.
