A Message from Fr. Bob
Dear Friends, It is hard to believe, but Advent is almost here! With just a few short weeks before we begin ligh ng the candles on the Advent wreath, I wanted to tell you a li le about the liturgical year and the Advent season.
The Church has a calendar of its own that we follow throughout the year. Instead of beginning on January 1, or following a school year, the Church calendar follows the major feasts within the Church, helping us to prepare for, and grow closer to, God in between the special feasts.
Our new liturgical year begins with the First Sunday of Advent, when we enter a me of prepara on. Any me we are preparing for a feast, as we are preparing for Christmas during the season of Advent, the church is decorated in the color purple. In addi on, the chasuble I wear is purple and the Altar Servers have purple cinctures around their waists. The color purple reminds us that this is a me of prepara on.
It is important for us to take me to get ready for the important feast of Christmas. Just as we would prepare for the arrival of a child, we want to take some me to prepare for the celebra on of baby Jesus’ birth. During this me in the church, we recall the stories from our salva on history. The Readings not only connect us to our past as a Church, but also call us to look forward to the me when Jesus returns to be with us once again. You will no ce, as we progress through Advent, that the Gospel stories seem to go in reverse! First we hear about the coming of Jesus at the end of me, then about his coming into his adult ministry, and fi nally we hear the announcement of Jesus’ coming to Mary.
When we enter the season of Advent in the parish, you will no ce a few changes on the altar, in addi on to the wonderful prepara on the Art and Environment team does to decorate the church. During this season Advent will be adding two extra candles on the altar (altar candles). Also during this season we shall be using the “Confi teor” which is the peniten al prayer that begins with “I confess to almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters....”. This prayer helps us bring to mind the sins we have commi ed so that we may bring our true selves, faults and all, to God. During the prayer, we say, repeatedly, “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault,” which is a transla on of the La n mea culpa, a phrase we use today when we want to acknowledge our mistakes. As always, we follow our acknowledgement with the prayer, Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy, a reminder that our God is a forgiving and merciful God.
This Advent, we look forward to seeing you each week as we light the candles on the Advent wreath and prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus!

Liturgy CornerNext weekend will be the feast of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. It is also the last full weekend in this current liturgical year (Saturday, November 28, is the last offi cial day of Ordinary Time). What is the Catholic Liturgical Year? The Church year begins each year with Advent, the season of awai ng Christ’s coming, and ends with the fi nal Saturday of Ordinary Time. Within the standard calendar year, the Church year starts in early December (or some mes the end of November) and goes through the following November. This weekend is a me to remember all that has transpired this past year. In a special way at Mass, we will look back upon all of the Sacraments that were celebrated throughout the past year. We will hear how many Bap sms, Reconcilia ons, First Holy Communions, Confi rma ons, Marriages, Anoin ng of the Sick & Ordina ons have taken place. The church’s liturgical and sacramental life, along with the proclama on of the Gospel, make the death and resurrec on of our Lord Jesus Christ present in our lives all through the year. This mystery gives power to all of the church’s ac vi es. “We need to go back...to see Jesus risen, and to become witnesses of his Resurrec on...It is returning to our fi rst love, in order to receive the fi re which Jesus has kindled in the world and to bring that fi re to all people, to the very ends of the earth.” (Pope Francis, Easter Vigil Homily, 2014)Newly Bap zed
Congratula ons to Peter Coates, Adrianna Lee, Adeline Menard and Liam Rennard who were bap zed recently.
“No one can enter the kingdom of Godwithout being born of water and Spirit.”
