A Note from Your Pastors

Friends, We have mentioned before that we are available for outdoor, socially distanced, masked visits. We bring this up again not to put any pressure on anyone to invite us over. We certainly want you to only do that with which you are comfortable. But, we do want to keep this invitation in front of you in case you are feeling like you could really use some pastoral care or simply a friendly face to come by and say hello. We have heard from some people that they worry about how busy we have been and how much demand is put on us because of the having to do everything differently in this COVID time. We know that there are people who would appreciate a visit, but hate to feel like they are inconveniencing us. In light of this, we put together a Sign Up Genius with some times when we are available for visits. On it are times we have set aside in case you want a visit. Just sign up there and we will be happy to come see you. Meanwhile, if you don’t have access to a computer to sign up this way or if you don’t see a time that works for you, please don’t hesitate to call which ever one of us you would like to come visit. Here’s the real bottom line—we miss you...we think about you often...the weeks and months sometimes pass more quickly than we can imagine and even when we aren’t seeing each other, you are cared for. Whether or not you sign up for a visit, please know that you matter to us and that we are here for you.

Stop By For a Tasty Treat

Throughout the month of August, First

Christian Church will host a Drive Thru/

Walk Thru/Bike Thru Ice Cream

Distribution each Monday (August 10,

17, 24, 31) evening from 7 - 8pm.

You are invited to come to the upper parking lot at

church and get your treat to go. There will be two

options each week - one ice cream option and one

fruity (lactose free) option.

This is a simple gift to help FCC friends and

neighbors cool off in the warmth of summer.

Culture Through Poetry: Inspiration for Our Times

Time are tumultuous. We are living in the midst of pandemic, social activism, racial injustice, and abundant

feelings of helplessness. In this time many are turning to poetry.

You are invited to join Corinne Stanley for a four-week journey of reading and discussing poets (and their poetry)

from around the world. Together participants will become familiar with poets from distinct cultures, respond to

their poetry, and (if inspired) reflect and write original poetry. You don’t have to be a poet to participate!

This class will meet on Tuesdays, August 18, 25, September 1 and 8 from 12:30 - 2:00pm via Zoom.

If you are interested in participating, please follow this link or call the church office to sign up. Those who sign up

will receive a packet of materials ahead of the first class that will be used for each session.

Poets from the following places will be explored: Palestine, United States, Poland, T’ang and Sung Dynasty,

Bohemia/Austria, India, Persia, Spain, Mexico.

A suggestion - as a way to connect not only with other cultures, but also our community, participants are invited

to make a donation to the Free Medical Clinic in appreciation for the class and in lieu of purchasing materials.

If you have questions, contact Corinne at [email protected].

BIBLE QUIZ

In 2 Samuel is a story about one of King David's sons who rebelled against his father. There was

a battle in the forest of Ephraim between men who were faithful to David and those who

followed the rebellious son.

David's soldiers won the fight, and David's son fled riding a mule. The mule ran under an oak

tree and David's son caught his head in the thick branches. He was left hanging there, trapped

but alive. His father's soldiers came upon him and ended his life.

King David was heart-stricken when he learned about his son's death. He cried out, "O my son _______, my son,

my son _______! Would I had died instead of you, O _______, my son, my son!" (2 Samuel 18:33, NRSV).

What was the son's name?

A. Amnon B. Absalom

C. Solomon D. Daniel

Worship Guide for Sunday Worship

Each week we post an electronic worship service on YouTube (and have an opportunity to gather together on Zoom). The new service is available beginning at 10am on Sunday. The worship guide below will function

as a bulletin for those watching the worship service and can also be used independently by those who cannot or choose not to access YouTube.

In preparation for participating in worship, you are invited to gather some sort of food and drink to take at communion time. Remember, these don’t have to be bread and juice or wine. If you desire, you may also

want to have a candle nearby to light as we light the candle at the beginning of worship.

Greeting

Congregational Singing - “Will You Come and Follow Me”

Prayer Take a moment to center yourself. Pay attention to the ways and places God shows up in your life.

Pray for those who are living in the wake of natural disasters. Pray for those experiencing daily trauma due to joblessness, homelessness, and unjust systems. Simply talk with God. What are the prayers of your heart?

Scripture - Luke 4:16-30 (excerpts printed here)

When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as

was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the

scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed

me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight

to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the scroll,

gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he

began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”...

Children’s Moment

Sermon - Songs of Commitment and Action Consider the following questions: When you think of Jesus, how do you understand his purpose? Do you think about the fact that he was a prophet and an activist? If someone asked you what your purpose as a person of faith is, how would you answer? How do you respond when your faith calls you to do difficult work or even to come in conflict with people you love or systems you have regard for? Where is God calling you today?

Offering During this time we appreciate all who are continuing their financial commitment to FCC using the USPS or the “Donate” button on the website. We also encourage you to consider other ways you can be an offering beyond our congregation, to the community and our world. Find an act of kindness to share today.

Communion One of the gifts of the table is that it is a place that refreshes us for the work to which we have been called. As Jesus had a mission, so do we. We are called from this table to go make a difference in the world. As you take the elements of communion, use this moment to commit your body again to God’s work and to invite God’s loving spirit to flow through you.

Congregational Singing - “Go Outside!”

Benediction
