TIDBITS® CHOWS DOWN ON
INTERESTING EDIBLESby Sarah Bates
Food nourishes your body just like Tidbits nourishes your brain! Get a double helping with these bits and bites that you might not have known about the things we eat and drink!• Did you know there are over 300 different
varieties of honey in North America alone? Honey, a natural energy restorer, was not only used by ancient cultures but it has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There have also been discoveries of 4,500 year old Egyptians carvings which are some of the earliest depictions of bee keeping.
• Do you know what a pluot is? It’s a complex hybrid between a plum and an apricot. It’s traits tend to be more plum-like, with a smooth skin. They are very sweet and intense in flavor and very juicy. They are not to be confused with an aprium, which is also a plum/apricot hybrid that is 1/4th plum and 3/4th apricot. Another plum/apricot hybrid is the plumcot. What’s a plum+apricot+peach? That one’s called a Peacotum.
• The island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean was named for the pomegranate. So was grenadine syrup and the grenade. All come from the Latin root word punica granatum, which means pomegranate.

TIDBITS® CAN’T HELP GETTING
ALL SHOOK UPby Sarah Bates
Elvis sold over one billion albums worldwide and is most fondly remembered as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. In honor of Elvis Week (August 8th - 16th) we celebrate the King Tidbits style.• Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 8,
1935 to Vernon and Gladys Presley in Tupelo, Mississippi in a two room house built by his father.
• At age ten, Elvis sang “Old Shep” at the Mississippi-Alabama Fairy and Dairy Show in Tupelo, winning 5th place and a $10 prize as well as free admission to all the rides at the fair.
• It was around this time that Elvis got his first guitar. Depending on the story you hear, Elvis either wanted a bicycle or a rifle for Christmas in 1946, but it all ends the same. His mother Gladys talked him into a guitar instead. (We’re glad he got the guitar.)
• Elvis moved in Memphis in 1948 and graduated from Humes High School on June 3, 1953. After high school, Elvis worked at a mechanic’s shop and that summer he made his first demo. He made another demo in January of 1954 and caught the attention of one of the owners of the recording studio, Sun Records. He was attending night school, studying to become an electrician, when Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, teamed Elvis up with musicians Scotty Moor and Bill Black and together they began recording.

ALL SHOOK UP (continued):• The three men began playing small gigs and touring the South over the summer and by
October gained enough work to quit their day jobs.
• In November of 1955, Elvis signed his first contract with RCA Records and on January 10, 1956 he was working on his first recording session with the label. “Heartbreak Hotel” was laid down during this session.
• “Heartbreak Hotel” was released just seventeen days after being recorded and shipped 300,000 copies in its first three weeks. It was #1 on Billboard’s pop singles for eight weeks. It also hit #1 on Country and #5 on R&B charts and sold over one million copies, earning Elvis his first gold record.
• Elvis made his first television appearance on Stage Show one day after “Heartbreak Hotel” was released. His first album, Elvis Presley, was released two months later and also reached #1 on Billboard, staying there for ten weeks. It went gold as well.
• It was a whirlwind for Elvis his first few months. He had his first screen test for Paramount Pictures the same month his first album was released in 1956. Over the late spring and early summer of 1956 he appeared on the Milton Bearle Show on NBC twice. He began to film Love Me Tender in August and made several appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show over the fall.
• Elvis Presley Day was declared in Tupelo, MS on September 26, 1956 and Love Me Tender premiered in New York in November.
• Elvis, a natural blonde, began dying his hair black in January of 1957. His hair had darkened naturally over the years and was described as naturally a dark chestnut by his early twenties.
• It was this same year that Elvis purchased Graceland, paying $102,500 for it. He bought it in March but didn’t spend his first night until June.
• Elvis performed his last international performance in Vancouver, Canada on August 31, 1957. He also released two more films that year, Loving You and Jailhouse Rock. It was also in 1957 that he performed in Hawaii for the first time. This was his last performance before joining the army.
• Elvis got his draft notice while spending Christmas with his family at Graceland in 1957. He filmed King Creole from January to March of 1958 before being inducted into the U.S. Army on March 24, 1958. His serial number was 53310761. He attended basic training at Fort Hood, Texas, during which time his mother Gladys passed away.
• Elvis was stationed in Germany for eighteen months, which is where he first met Priscilla Beaulieu.
• Elvis took karate lessons while in Germany. He received his first degree black belt in July 1960. He carried the certification in his wallet everyday for the rest of his life. That year he was also promoted to Sergeant and received his full stripes before being officially discharged from active duty. His first recording post-Army took place on March 20, 1960. He began filming GI Blues in April.
• In August 1960 he started filming Flaming Star, in which he portrayed the son of a Native American father and a white mother. He earned recognition from a tribal Native American council for his work in the film. Elvis himself is part Cherokee. His great-great-great grandmother was Native American Cherokee Morning Dove White.
• Blue Hawaii entered the Billboard charts in October 1961 and stayed there for one and half years and at #1 for twenty weeks alone! It is the best selling of Elvis’s records during his lifetime. His best selling album of all time was GI Blues.

ALL SHOOK UP (continued):• In 1962, Elvis sees Priscilla for the first time since Germany.
• Elvis receives his second degree black belt in 1963.
• Elvis bought Franklin Roosevelt’s Presidential yacht, the Potomac, for $55,000 and donated it to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis to use to raise funds. In 1965, he donated $50,000 to the Motion Picture Relief Fund, which is reportedly the largest donation the organization has ever received.
• Elvis entertained The Beatles in his home in California on August 27, 1965 where they had an informal jam session.
• For Christmas 1966 Elvis buys Priscilla a horse. He also formally proposed marriage on December 20th. They married on May 1, 1967 in a private ceremony in Las Vegas. They had a second reception in Graceland for their families, even going so far as to don their wedding attire again for their benefit. Lisa Marie was born on February 1, 1968.
• Elvis was a long time admirer of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and often quoted his “I Have a Dream” speech. He was deeply saddened by his assassination.
• Elvis was first dubbed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the late 1960s.
• In late summer of 1968 Elvis filmed his 29th film Charro! This is the only one of Elvis’s films in which he does not sing on camera.
• The 1968 TV Special Elvis airs on December 2, 1968 on NBC. It is one of the biggest television hits of the year and its sound track album goes to #8 on the pop charts. Rock writer Greil Marcus is quoted as saying, “It was the finest music of his life. If ever there was music that bleeds, this was it.”
• Elvis passed away on August 16, 1977 from heart failure. He was forty-two years old.

TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:
EGYPT PART IIBecause we can’t talk about this magnificent country in just one week alone, Tidbits extends our stay in Egypt for another week to learn more about the fertile lands of the Nile. • In Egyptian astrology, Ursa Major is not a
bear or part of the Big Dipper but rather part of the thigh of an ox.
• Egypt has one of the oldest cultures in the world and its history spans 3,000 year of continuous activity.
• The Nile, one of Egypt’s most recognizable wonders, is the longest river in the world. It also flows South to North into the Mediterranean Sea.
• Cleopatra’s needle is the name for the three ancient Egyptian obelisks re-erected in London, Paris and New York during the 19th century. The name is, however, incorrect as they were already over 1,000 years old during Cleopatra’s lifetime. They were erected by Thutmose III, nephew of Hatshepsut, around 1450 B.C. The inscriptions currently on the obelisks were added 200 years later by Ramesses II.
• The London and New York needles are a pair. The London needle was given to the United Kingdom by Egyptian and Sudanese ruler Muhammad Ali in 1817. The New York needle was formally given to the United States in 1879 but wasn’t erected until 1881. They measure 68 ft (21 m) tall and weigh 180 tons.
• The Paris needle was presented to France by Muhammad Ali in 1826. Its mate is still in Luxor. It is made of red granite, stands 75 ft (23 m) tall, weighs 250 tons and lies near the spot where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed. It is missing its capstone, which was stolen in Egypt in the 6th century B.C. However, the French government replaced it with a gold-leafed cap in 1998.

EGYPT PART II (continued):• The official language of Egypt is Arabic, but English and French are
widely taught.
• The Great Pyramid at Giza was the tallest man made monument in the world until the 19th century.
• The Great Pyramid and Sphinx at Giza are two of the other most recognizable landmarks in Egypt and the world. The Sphinx is one of the world’s largest and oldest statues and most Egyptologists believe it was built by the Pharaoh Khafra around 2520-2494 B.C. The Great Pyramid was built by Khafra’s father Khufu. Khafra’s pyramid is the second largest of the three pyramids at the Giza necropolis complex. The third and smallest pyramid belongs to Khafra’s son, the Pharaoh Menkaura. Some believe that Khafra was the model for the face for the sphinx.
• Egypt has two seasons: mild winter from November to April and hot summer from May to October. Travel guides recommend January as the ideal month to visit Egypt.
• The education system in Egypt is free and compulsory from age six to fifteen.
• Muslim and Christian Egyptians alike celebrate Christmas and the birth of Christ on January 7th. The Christmas meal in Egypt is known as Fata and consists of bread, rice, garlic and boiled meat. The churches are lit with candles to symbolize the candles Joseph used to keep Mary warm during the Nativity. Ramadan is also a major celebration in Egypt.
• Egyptian cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean and Middle Easter cuisines. Ful mudammas, made of mashed fava beans, is often regarded as Egypt’s national dish.
• About 94% of Egypt’s population follows the Sunni Muslim religion.
The rest of the population is made up by Coptic Christians.

GREAT ROCK LEGENDSThis certainly isn’t all of rock’s greatest legends, but it’s certainly quite a few. Sit back and enjoy the ride as we tell you a bit about some of music’s most familiar names.• Paul Simon was born on October 13, 1941 in Newark, New Jersey.
He is a two time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once as part of Simon and Garfunkel and once as a solo artist. A great philanthropist, Simon sits on the board of Little Kids Rock, a non-profit organization that aims to provide music education in public schools throughout America. Simon gave a memorable performance of “The Boxer” on the first episode of Saturday Night Live after 9/11.
• Otis Redding (1941-1967) died two months before the release of his song “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay.” The song, recorded just three days before his death, was considered by Redding himself to be unfinished. The whistle in the song was a place holder for future lyrics that would never be added. It was released as is, whistle and all, in 1968. It was Redding’s only single to make it onto the Billboard Hot 100 and is the first posthumous single in U.S. chart history. Redding was honored by the U.S. Post Office on a commemorative stamp in 1993 and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994.
• The Rolling Stones, active since 1962, originally consisted of Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The group has sold more than 200 million albums world wide and are ranked #4 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, they are influential, even today. Jagger was knighted in 2003 and Richards served as inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, later appearing as Sparrow’s father in the series.
