This time of year can be very exhausting for students. Here are some helpful things to make it a positive seasonal transition for your children: Maintain routines and schedules. Encourage children to get plenty of rest and eat well-balanced meals. Listen to your children. Ask children to find ways to help others. Get outside daily for fresh air and exercise. Set aside quiet time each day to read, color, paint or create. Cold Weather Reminder: It is also important to send your child dressed in layers, as some- times the heat is not consistent throughout the building. If they are hot, they can remove the sweater/ sweatshirt and when they are in a space that is cooler they can put it back on! There are no known cures for colds and flu, so cold and flu prevention should be your goal. A proactive approach to warding off colds and flu is apt to make your whole life healthier. The most effective way for preventing the flu is to get the flu shot. It may not be natural, but it works better than anything else. But there are other strategies you can employ as well. #1 Wash Your Hands Most cold and flu viruses are spread by direct contact. Someone who has the flu sneezes onto their hand, and then touches the telephone, the keyboard, a kitchen glass. The germs can live for hours -- in some cases weeks -- only to be picked up by the next person who touches the same object. So wash your hands often. If no sink is available, rub your hands together very hard for a minute or so. That also helps break up most of the cold germs. Or rub an alcohol-based hand sanitizer onto your hands. #2 Don’t Cover Your Sneezes and Coughs With Your Hands Because germs and viruses cling to your bare hands, muffling coughs and sneezes with your hands results in passing along your germs to others. When you feel a sneeze or cough coming, use a tissue, and then throw it away immediately. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow. #3 Don’t Touch Your Face Cold and flu viruses enter your body through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Touching their faces is the major way children catch colds, and a key way they pass colds on to their parents. #4 Drink Plenty of Fluids Water flushes your system, washing out the poisons as it rehydrates you. A typical, healthy adult needs eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids each day. How can you tell if you’re getting enough liquid? If the color of your urine runs close to clear, you’re getting enough. If it’s deep yellow, you need more fluids. Community and staff have a wonderful and successful second semester and stay healthy.

William B. Travis High School: Science

TAKS Plan During the upcoming months, the Travis High School Science department will be conducting TAKS tutorials for all students interested. Tutorials will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:40 – 3:45pm. Interested students should report to room C100 where roll will be taken. The activity bus will be available for students who stay after school for the tutorial program. All students must pass the Science TAKS test during their junior year of high school in order to graduate. Retests are available during the student’s senior year, however FBISD policy states that the student must pass all parts of the TAKS test in order to participate in graduation and receive their diploma. It is imperative that students take advantage of this program if needed. Tutorials will include a diagnostic or practice test to determine predicted score on the test in April. This diagnostic tool will then be used to determine which objectives the student may need the most help in. The tutorial will then be catered around that particular area of need. Please sign and return the bottom portion to the teacher. Keep the top for your records. Please contact your child’s current science teacher at 281-634-7000 if you have any questions about your child’s success on the Sci-ence TAKS test.

Journalism Department News

Journalism Kids Do Better In 1994, Jack Dvorak, professor of journalism at IndianaUniversityundertookamajorstudytofindouthow high school students who took journalism courses in high school fared when they got to college. The results were astounding. He found that students with a journalism/publica-tions staff backgroundwere better organizers, betterwriters and made better grades. More recently, the Newspaper Association of America underwrote a more thorough study and found that “students who participate in journalism programs havesignificantlyhigherscoresthannon-staffmembersin 12 of 14 areas of academic comparison: college fresh-manGPA;firstcollegefreshmanEnglish,overallhighschool GPA; high school grades in English, math, social science, science, foreign language and art; and ACT Com-posite score, ACT English score and ACT reading score. Non-journalismstudentsperformsignificantlybetterthannewspaper or yearbook staff members in only two of the areas of academic comparison – ACT Mathematics score and ACT Science score.” To read the entire report and see how journalism courses will help your student in many ways, visit http://naa.org and read the entire report.

Student Council Helps Community And Environment

TravisHighSchoolStudentCouncilhashadanamazingtimethisyear! Not only have we done service inside our school, but we have also been very involved in helping the community and our environment. OurfirstbigprojecttohelpourcommunitythisyearwasourFirst Annual Fall Festival. Student council invited every club at Travis to set up a carnival style booth. The community was invited to have a fun and safe Halloween experience! The entry fee was two cans per person to donate to our local food pantry. Our next big community in-volvement activity was our Second Annual Turkey Race. Starting last year, we began a new tradition here at Travis which was a competition between Travis and Bush in a food drive to see who can collect the most canned goods for the Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. Despite our defeat by Bush last year, our Travis students really pulled through and raised approximately 2500 cans this year! Not only were we able to defeat Bush, but we also made a large impact in our community by providing full meals to those in need on the Thanksgiving holiday. For the Christmas holiday, Travis student council students helped provide gifts for children in need. Many student council members donated new, unwrapped present for the Fort Bend Santa’s Exchange program befittinglocalfamilies.WealsohadvolunteersworkatFirstColonyChristian Church to help take care of children while their parents shopped for Christmas presents. Aside from improving our community, Travis Student Council also works to promote “Go Green” to make our environment cleaner. Every Wednesday student council members collect boxes of recycled paper from every teacher’s classroom. We also host school wide clean-ups where Travis students get together to clean up both inside and outside our school. In addition we have also made a long term investment this year to make Travis High School environmentally friendly. Our student body treasurer, Neel Gupta, worked very hard to provide our school with a recycling company that will come to Travis and pick up our recycled water bottles. Travis Student Council is also working to help another country in need. Just recently Haiti was devastated with a series of earthquakes, causing great destruction to homes, leaving many people homeless, injured, or even dead. To help out, our student council has invented a fundraiser called Hearts for Haiti. Each day we set up a table during lunch to collect needed items for Haiti such as money, clothes, or water bottles. After only one week we have collected at least $800 and many bags full of clothing and food. Our goal is raise $2,500 by Feb. 5. As you can see, the Travis High School Student Council has been busily working to enhance our school and serve our local community.
