Hooray! Spring has sprung and summer is close behind. Most of you have got your

boats in the water and have been enjoying the beautiful weather we’ve been blessed

with. Along with that we have some fun events coming up.

Today was the Point Place Parade. Thanks to Gloria Parker and Tom Jr. the fire engine was

once again in the parade. P/C Jim Balogh made arrangements with Brenner’s to have a pontoon

in the parade. TSPS was represented by both. P/C Wayne Osborn, Linda Osborn, and Lt/C

Joyce Mease did a great job of getting everything organized. TSPS had 17 volunteers walking or

riding in the parade. I want to thank all who took time to volunteer for this event. We handed

out 600 coloring books and 500 ink pens. WOW!!!! It was not to hot and we had a breeze to

keep us comfortable. We had some good looking pirates. Lt/C Joann Scott was quite the swash

buckler with her sword.

Don’t forget to make your reservations for, Saturday, June 14, to attend the kayak seminar/

trip.

Rendezvous #1 will be at Clinton Reef Boat Club. Lt/C Chris Hoover has been working hard

planning a great week end for us, June 26, 27, & 28. Then on to Huron Basin for D/C Larry

Cole’s Commander’s rendezvous, July 4, 5, & 6. That will be Summer Council weekend also.

Aug. 1, 2, & 3 will be my Commander’s rendezvous at TYC. Friday evening will be dinner

and party at the Pavilion. The theme for Friday evening is “Red Neck Yacht Club Party”. Wear

your Red Neck and Tacky garb. There will be 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place prizes. We will have a cake for

the 100th birthday of the National Power Squadron. Saturday will be relaxing around the pool

and some activities at TYC. It’s bound to be “hot” by then so something simple is being

planned. Watch your e-mails for more information. Middle Bass Island Yacht Club will be at

TYC for that weekend. They will be joining us for the evening. The menu is still being

finalized. Some of you may have heard the band “Band of Brothers”. They will be playing from

8 - 11 pm. The theme for Saturday evening will be “A Night Under the Stars”.

Hope all of you will be able to attend all or some of the TSPS summer events we have

planned. There are more rendezvous planned than those I mentioned. Don’t forget many of

these can be attended even if you come by land.

As I close, I hope I’ll be seeing you at the June 3, general meeting which is only a few days

away. If not, may all of you have a fun and safe boating season. Fair winds and the good Lord

watching over you.

District Commander Larry D. Cole, SN is planning our Summer Council and Rendezvous July 4th to July 6th, 2014, at the Huron Boat Basin. For Friday evening, July 4th he is planning a reception for all members. The menu will be pulled pork sand-wich, fresh sweet corn, Cole slaw, potato salad, fruit and beverage for only $10.00. Please get me a firm number of your squadron members that will be attending the Friday dinner by June 28 so that we are prepared. Also Cedar Point is scheduled to have fireworks both Friday and Saturday evenings that weekend. A short walk on Huron's pier should give a great view of the fireworks. The fireworks may also be viewed from the water if you come by boat.

A local motel that has a very good rate for the holiday weekend is The Gull Motel, 45 Cleveland Road, Huron, (419) 433-4855. It is a short walk from the Boat Basin. Other hotels in the area are much more expensive since it will be the tourist season here. This should be GREAT Friday evening and a wonderful Summer Council and Rendezvous. I look forward to seeing many of your squadron members here for this event. For more information on the Saturday evening steak fry contact P/C Tom Lander, JN at [email protected]. For information on dockage, contact P/C Dale Crawford, AP at [email protected] or phone 440-241-5336. D/29 Lt/C Robert DuBray, AP (419) 433-3054 [email protected]

The last ABC class of the year was May 10th at a new location, Perrysburg Township Fire Depart-

ment, great facility, thanks to Joe Schaller and his contacts. Thanks to all who helped, instructors

Jim Sommers, Nelson Evans, Joe Schaller and I. Registration was Louise Sommers, Joyce Mease,

Larry Cole, and Jason Snook. Lunch helpers, Gloria Parker and Lorene Bixler. Thanks to all that

helped grade as well, most people were listed above (I hope I did not forget anyone). We had a

total of 19 students that attended and all did pass and had a good time.

The “Firm Foundation” radio show on 1470 came out Saturday May 17th for the national “ready set wear it” campaign and to

kick off to National Safe Boating Week. The show went really well with representation from the Maritime Museum, ODNR,

Coast Guard Aux, and of course our squadron.

We will be offering a piloting class this fall, please keep an eye out for more information and more classes.

I would like to say a big thank you to all that have helped and supported myself and the education department throughout this year. This includes all that were involved from beginning and planning of classes to the end, and of course Joyce Mease and Mary Jo Price for their great support and great advertising.

Lead by Example!

Household Hints for the Boat…

Each spring brings out all the boat cleaners and waxes. It also brings out the worst damage to gelcoat if one is not careful. I have seen “professional” men waxing hulls on large boats with an electric drill and a buffer pad. This is the easiest way to eat through your paint or gelcoat unless you are extremely careful. The high speed of the drill and the circular motion can destroy the surface with velocity and heat. If you want to use a buffer, I suggest using an orbital buffer. These are slower in speed and, what is more important; does not drive the buffing pad in a perfect circular motion. Instead it sort of wobbles and offers the user more protection against burn through. Whatever your choice, please use care when buffing.

Don't Go Near the Water, Continued

I intended to include some material from the May issue of Sail magazine about wearing life jackets. I am sure it was in the May issue be-cause of the life jacket wearing promotions in May. However, for those of you who may not subscribe to The Blade, Matt Markey, our speaker from a couple of months ago for the squadron has a good article which I am in-cluding now. While we are not mentioned by name for our promotion of life jacket wearing this year, the information is helpful and some of it is sobering (sobering is also a hint to re-main so while boating). Back to Sail magazine later. So please go near the water safely. I like seeing you at the meetings.

Judging a Book…

Over the course of years I have been asked many times just how I got into cruising. I usually came up with some stock answer but never really spoke about an experience that opened my eyes.

This is going back a lot of years, all the way back to my first semester of high school. When my junior high class moved onto high school, it proved to be an eye opening experience for all of us. First of all, our classmates were broken up and spewed forth into different curriculums with new faces everywhere. All the high school kids were like adults, everyone seemed a foot taller than us, which was intimidating. All the boys shaved, all the girls, well, you know what I mean…all grown up. Our class was mainly composed of short, non-shaving boys, and flat chested girls. One learned to act in an adult manner at all times which for our part, was a learning curve.

In junior high it was the norm to see a lot of classmates dressed in the Boy or Girl Scout uniforms. These kids emitted a quiet pride and it reflected well in our school. But once in high school, the uniforms disappeared from the halls and classrooms. I guess wearing the scout uniform was for children, not young adults.

My first full week of school brought me into some great classes and one that I did not belong in, that being “Public Speaking”. Somehow I landed in a class that was for mid level grades. I was the shortest kid in the front row and hoped that I was not called upon while trying desperately to be invisible. The good thing was I got to sit in this class for a week and just listen to eve-ryone else.

Our first formal day in Public Speaking presented us with a teacher who told the class that for the next few days each student would give an impromptu speech lasting a minimum of ten minutes. I was excused from this work.

The following day as the students were entering the classroom a heavy set girl, in a full dress scout uniform came and sat down. There were a few snickers behind her but the class settled in. This was the first scout I had seen in high school and thought that she must have had a lot of courage just to wear the uniform.

As the speeches began, most of the kids I heard were not bad, but some stumbled and had not thought out what they were going to say. One guy was really quite good about how an ant crossed a busy street. I can still remember some of it today. But the best one in the class was the Girl Scout.

She got up in front of the class and said that we could figure out that she was a Girl Scout by her uniform. This was the final year of scouting for her and she spoke of her regard for the program, but that really was not her speech.

She went on to explain that her troop wanted to do something really different before getting out of scouting so over the past year they did bake sales, car washes, sold candy, and other things to earn enough money to go to California.

That is, to reach San Diego and meet up with a chartered fifty-foot schooner that her troop was to sail, along with a sailing mas-ter and another scout leader. They reached their goal for the money and everyone packed up and took a flight to California. Upon reaching San Diego they headed for their schooner. Two days later found the eight girls out in the ocean. Their destina-tion was Tahiti. I looked around and there was no snickering, only wide eyes and open mouths. You could have heard a pin drop. This Girl Scout went on to tell the class of sailing across the Pacific, of what they saw and of their daily routine. She spoke of spending over a month on board with her troop, which included exploring Tahiti, visiting with the local people, and what she learned from her travels.

Respect, ahhh my dear, you could have cut it with a knife in that classroom. No one snickered anymore and if someone made a comment and it was overheard in the hallway, well, one of those students in the Public Speaking class quietly corrected them. The speech probably made a greater impression on me. This girl was not wealthy, but rich in determination. She and her fellow scouts proved that dreams can come true in real life, not something conjured by Hollywood writers; and I, along with a number of other students learned about the old adage of judging a book by its cover.
