TOPIC: THE ULTIMATE EXAMPLE OF REPURPOSING A LIFE SCRIPT – Pastor Alton Trimble

Sunday, May 3, 2020

Christ’s death sentence was a life script given to Him.

FOUNDATION SCRIPTURES:

John 19: 1-42

John 20: 1-7; 30

The events leading to Christ crucifixion gives us insight to our own struggles with

terminally-oriented life scripts or death sentences.

1. In life there may be seasons of severe brutality.

John 19:1 (NLT)

Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.

2. There is no pain like emotional despair.

John 19:2a (NLT)

The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head.

3. Where did you get the jacket you are wearing right now?

John 19:2b

And they put a purple robe on him.

4. How do you handle those who profess their displeasure with you?

John 19:3a (NLT)

“Hail! King of the Jews!” they mocked.

5. Have you ever had insult added to your injury?

John 19:3b (NLT)

They slapped him across the face.

6. They brought Him out in public in this embarrassing state of ridicule and humiliation.

John 19:5b (NLT)

And Pilate said, “Look, here is the man!”

7. Relationships are defined in times of crisis.

John 19:6 (NLT)

When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, “Crucify him!

Crucify him!”

8. There is nothing like the weight of a heavy burden when you are all alone.

John 19:17 (NLT)

Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull.

9. Buzzards are not just birds.

John 19:24 (NLT)

So they said, “Rather than tearing [His clothes] apart, let’s throw dice for it.”

10. Others are near and affected by your problem.

John 19:25 (NLT)

Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of

Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.

SO HOW DO I REPURPOSE?

1. Start thinking about someone other than you.

John 19:15 (NLT)

When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her,

“Dear woman, here is your son.”

2. God has divine purpose even in our suffering.

John 19:28 (NLT) 28 Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am

thirsty.”

I Peter 5:10 (NKJV)

But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after

you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

3. Repurposing your life script requires humility.

John 19:30 (NLT)

When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and released

his spirit.

Seven (7) Things to release to God:

1. Emotional baggage

Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV) 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you,

along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,

as God in Christ forgave you.

Philippians 4:6 (ESV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with

thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

2. Control of your future

Jeremiah 29:11(ESV) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil,

to give you a future and a hope.

3. Doubt and unbelief

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all

your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

4. The past

Isaiah 43:18-19 (ESV) 18 “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I am doing

a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the

wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

5. An inflated sense of yourself

Philippians 3:12-14 (ESV) 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it

my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I

have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining

forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call

of God in Christ Jesus.

6. All lies

John 8:32 (ESV)

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

7. Fear of failure

Romans 8:28 (ESV)

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those

who are called according to his purpose.

Isaiah 40:22 (NKJV)

It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,

who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell

in.

Isaiah 41:14 (NLT)

Though you are a lowly worm, O Jacob, don’t be afraid, people of Israel, for I will help

you. I am the LORD, your Redeemer. I am the Holy One of Israel.’
