Installing or changing batteries in Tri-bot:

TochangethebatteriesinTri-bot,firstcarefullylayhimonhisback.Donotbalance

himorplacehimnearatableedge.Installthebatteriesasfollows:

1. UsingaPhillipsscrewdriver(notincluded)removethescrewsonthe

batterycompartmentcoverlocatedontheundersideofTri-bot’swheel

base.

2. Insertthebatteriesaccordingtothediagram.Ensurethatthepositiveand

negativepolaritiesmatchtheillustrationsinsidethebatterycompartment.

3. Replacethebatterycompartmentcoverandreplacethescrewsusingthe

screwdriver.Donotover-tighten.

NOTE:YouwillknowwhenTri-bot’sbatteriesarenearlydepletedbecausehewill

makeacomment.

Battery details - remote controller

Installing or changing batteries in the remote controller:

1. OpenthebatterycompartmentontheremotecontrollerusingaPhillips

screwdriver(notincluded)toremovethescrewonthebattery

compartmentcover.

2. Insertthebatteriesaccordingtothediagram.Ensurethatthepositiveand

negativepolaritiesmatchtheillustrationsinsidethebatterycompartment.

3. Replacethebatterycompartmentcoverandreplacethescrewusingthe

screwdriver.Donotover-tighten.

NOTE: TheremotecontrollerisequippedwithanLEDindicatorthatlightsupwhen

youpressanybutton.Youwillknowwhenthebatteriesintheremotecontrollerare

nearlydepletedwhentheLEDindicatorshinesdimly.

Getting started / Demo mode / Volume control

Getting started

AfteryouhaveinsertedbatteriesinTri-botandtheremotecontroller,youareready

tomeetyourTri-bot!First,placehimupright,onalargesmooth,flatsurface,away

fromedgesandobstacles.Next,locatethepowerswitchontheback,justabovethe

wheels.PressitoncetoturnTri-botON.

Hewillbeginoneofhismanystart-up

routinesasheintroduceshimself!Hewill

rovearound,speak,andhisfacewillbe

animated.Ifyouwanttostophimatany

timeduringhisstart-uproutine,pressany

buttonontheremotecontroller.

Demo mode

Tri-bothasvariousdemoroutinestoshowhismotions,animationsandpersonality!

Hewilltellyoumoreabouthisfeaturesandevenjokewithyou.Toaccessthese

functions,pointtheremotecontrolleratTri-botandpresstheDEMObutton.

NOTE:Tri-botmovesaroundduringanydemoroutine.Ensurehissurroundingareais

freefromobstaclesandedges.

Volume control

Tri-bothasthreevolumelevels:high,mediumorlow.Youcannotchangethevolume

whenTri-botisinafunctionmodeorplayingagame.Thebesttimetochangethe

volumeiswhenheisfirstturnedon.Thedefaultvolumeis‘high’.

Tochangethevolume,dothefollowing:

1.GentlypressTri-bot’sheadinavertical,

downwardsdirection,asshown.

2.Presshisheadoncetosethisvolumeto

‘medium’,andtwicefor‘low’.Pressinghis

headathirdtimewillsetthevolumeback

to‘high’.

Controlling Tri-bot

Tri-bothasathree-wheeledomni-directionalbase.Hecaneasilymoveinany

direction(includingdiagonally),turn,andevenspinonthespot.Hedetectssignals

fromtheremotecontrollerregardlessofthedirectionheisfacing.

Driving control

Tocontrolhismovementsyoucan

usethedirectionpadontheremote

controller.Forexample,pressthe

leftdirectionbutton,tomoveTri-bot

tohisleft.Tomakehimturnonthe

spot,usethearrowbuttonsforeither

clockwise,orcounter-clockwiseturns.

Ashedrivesaround,Tri-botcandetectobstaclesinhisrange.Hecanonlysee

obstaclesthataredirectlyinfrontof,orbehindhim.Hecannotdetectobstacles

whenheisdrivingsideways,diagonallyorturningonthespot.Hetalksandmakes

commentsashegoes!

Tilt sensor control

Theremotecontrollerisequippedwithatilt

sensor.YoucanmoveTri-botleft,right,

forwardsandbackwardsbypressingthe

triggerlocatedonthebackoftheremote

controllerwhiletiltingit.Tri-botwillcomment

thatheisreadyforcommands.

Tri-bot.

NOTE:YoucannotusethetiltfunctiontomakeTri-botturnorspinonthespot,or

Fall detection

IfTri-botfallsoverhewilltellyou.Hiswheelswillautomaticallystopspinning,but

youwillneedtostandhimbackuprighttogethimgoingagain.

Homing function

Tri-botisequippedwithahomingfunctionwhichallowshimtofollowyou,orlocate

andmovetowardsyou.Besuretogivehimtimetolocateyou,beforeyoustart

moving,ifyouwanthimtofollowyou.

PressandholdtheHOMEbuttonon

theremotecontroller.Tri-botwilllook

foryou,andmakecommentsashegoes.

Ifhemovesawayfromyou,continueto

presstheHOME buttonashescansthe

areaandlooksforyou.Ifyoureleasethe

HOME button,Tri-botthinkshehas

reachedhome,andwillmakeanother

comment.PresstheHOME buttonagain

ifyouwanthimtocontinuetrackingyou.

NOTE:AvoidusingtheHomingfunctioninaclutteredarea,asitwillconfuseTri-bot

andmakeitharderforhimtodetectthehomingsignal.Tri-bot’sIRsensorsarebased

reflection.Hecanseehighlyreflectivesurfaces,suchaswhitewallsormirrorsmore

easilyandfromgreaterdistancesthanmatteorblacksurfaces.

Modes

Tri-bothasseveraldifferentfunctionmodesandgameswhicharedescribedinthis

section.

Program Mode

InProgram Modeyoucanprogramandstoreasequenceofupto60drivecommand

programstepsthatTri-botcanplaybackonrequest.Hecannotdetectoravoid

obstacleswhileheisinProgram Mode.

ToenterProgram Mode,dothefollowing:

1.PresstheProgrambutton.Tri-botwillmakeacommentwhenheisready

toreceivedrivingcommands.

2.UsethedirectionpadontheremotecontrollertodirectTri-bot’smovements.He

willstorethelengthofthemovementasasingleprogramstep.

3.Toaddmoreprogramsteps,repeatstep2.

4.Ifyouwanttoaddapausetothesequence,presstheSTOPbutton.Thelength

oftimeyouholdthebuttonwillbeequaltothelengthofthepause.

5.Whenyouhavefinished,pressthePlaybackbutton.Tri-botwillexit

Program Modeandplaytheprogramback.

NOTE: Ifyoudonotenteranycommandsforapproximately30seconds,

Tri-botwillstoretheprogramandexitProgram Mode.

6.Tocleartheprogram,enterProgram Mode bypressingtheProgrambutton

andpressthePlaybackbutton,withoutenteringanydriveinstructions.

Toplaybacktheprogramatanytime,pressthePlaybackbutton.Tri-botwillnot

rememberanystoredprogramsonceyouturnhimoff.

NOTE:Tri-botcanonlystoreoneprogramatatime.Ifyoustoreanewprogram,you

willoverwriteanddeletethepreviouslystoredprogram.

Modes - Program Mode

Free Roam Mode

InFree Roam ModeTri-botcanrovearoundhisenvironmentwithoutyourcommands;

hecandetectandavoidobstaclesashegoes,andmakecomments.

ToenterFree Roam Mode,presstheBrainbuttonontheremotecontroller.

Afterapproximately3minutes,Tri-botwillexitFree Roam ModeandgotoStandby

Mode (refertopage11fordetails). ToexitFree Roam Modebeforethis,pressthe

STOPbuttonontheremotecontollerorpressTri-bot’sheadinavertical,downwards

direction.

Guard Mode

InGuard Mode,Tri-botwillscanhisimmediateenvironmentinfrontof,andbehind

him.Hewillsoundanalarmifhedetectsmovementorachangetotheenvironment.

NOTE:YoucannotgiveTri-botdrivecommandswhileheisinGuard Mode.

ToactivateGuard Mode,dothefollowing:

1. PresstheGUARDbuttonontheremotecontroller.

2. Tri-botwillaskyouto“tap”hishead.Todoso,gentlypresshisheadina

vertical,downwardsdirection.HewillthentellyouthatheisinGuard Mode.

3. WhenhefirstentersGuard Modehewillperformalongrangescanofhis

immediateenvironmentinfrontof,andbehindhim.Thisisapproximately

4-6feet(1.2-1.8m)dependingontheenvironment.Ifthereareobjects

nearbyhewillperformashortrangescan,thisisapproximately12inches

(30cm).

NOTE:Ifthereareobjectsinfrontof,andbehindTri-botwithin12inches

(30cm)hewillnotenterGuard Mode.Trymovinghimtoaclearer

environment.

4. IfTri-botdetectsanymovementsornewobjects,hewillsoundanalarm.

5. Afterapproximately30minuteshewillexitGuard Modeandwaitfora

command.Ifyoudonotenteracommandwithin10minutes,hewillenter

Standby Mode (refertopage11fordetails).

ToexitGuard Modebeforethe30minutesisover,presstheSTOPbuttonon

theremotecontroller,orpresshishead.

WhenheexitsGuard Modehewilltellyouifhesawanything.

Free Roam Mode / Guard Mode

Alarm Mode / Standby Mode / Sleep Mode

Alarm Mode

Tri-botisequippedwithanalarmbasedonminute-longintervals.Youcanmakethe

alarmsoundfrom1to12minutesaheadofthetimeyousetthealarm.

ToactivateAlarm Mode,dothefollowing:

1. PresstheALARMbuttonontheremotecontroller.

2. Tri-botwillaskyouto“tap”hisheadforthenumberofminutesyouwantto

wait,beforethealarmsounds.Forinstance,ifyouwantthealarmtosoundin

twominutes,gentlypresshisheadtwiceinavertical,downwardsdirection.

3. Eachtimeyoupresshishead,Tri-botwillconfirmhowmanyminuteshewill

waitbeforehesoundsthealarm.Whenyouhavereachedthedesirednumber

ofminutes,waitafewsecondsandTri-botwilltellyouthathewillbegin

countdown.

4. Whenthealarmsounds,Tri-botwillrovearound.

TostopthealarmyouwillhavetocatchTri-botandpresshishead!

NOTE: Tocancelthealarmbeforeitsounds,presstheSTOPbuttononthe

remotecontrollerorpressTri-bot’shead.

Afterthealarmsounds,Tri-botwillnotbeinanyfunctionmode,andisreadyto

receivenewcommands.

Standby Mode

Tri-botisequippedwithaStandby Mode.Ifyoudonotinteractwithhimfor

approximately10minuteshewillmakeacomment,andenterStandby Mode.Towake

himyoucanpresshishead,orpressanybuttonontheremotecontroller.

Sleep Mode

IfTri-botisleftforapproximately10minutesmore(thatisapproximately20minutes

altogether)hewillenterSleep Mode.TowakehimfromSleep Modegentlypresshis

head.

NOTE: IfyouaredoneplayingwithTri-bot, remembertoturnhimoffafterhehas

enteredSleep Mode.

Games - Pattern Game / Maze Game / Minefield Game

GamesTri-bothasthreedriving-basedgames.Usethedirectionpadontheremotecontroller

todriveTri-bot.Ifyoudonotinteractwithhimforapproximately3minutes,hewill

askifyouwanttoplayagain.Ifyoudonotrespond,hewillexitGame Mode.

ToactivateGame Mode,dothefollowing:

1. PresstheGAMEbuttonontheremotecontroller.

2. Tri-botwillsaythenameofthegames,pausingaftereachname.Toselect

thegameyouwant,presstheGAMEbuttonafterhesaysthename.Ifyoudo

notselectagameafterhehassaidallofthenameshewillexitGame Mode.

3. Onceyouhaveselectedagame,Tri-botwillexplaintherulesofthegameto

you,andbegin!

4. TostopthegameortoexitGame Mode,pressSTOPontheremotecontroller

orpressTri-bot’shead.

Pattern game

InPatterngame,Tri-botwilldriveoutapatternonthegroundandthenaskyou

torepeatthepatternbycontrollinghimusingthedirectionpadontheremote

controller.Tri-botisequippedwithlotsofpatternsforhoursoffun!

Maze game

Tri-botwilldriveouttheshapeofthemazeontheground.Hewillthenaskyouto

drivehiminthesamepattern,usingtheremotecontroller.Youhaveafixedamount

oftimetorunthroughthemazecorrectly.Hemakescommentsashegoestotellyou

whetherornotyouaremovinginthecorrectdirection.Driveintoamaze“wall”and

hewill“bump”offthemharmlessly.Tri-bothaslotsofmazesinhismemory!

Minefield game

SimilartoMazegame,butwithmines,Tri-botwilldriveouttheshapeofthe

minefieldontheground.Hewillthenaskyoutodrivehimusingtheremote

controller.Youmustfollowthesamepatterntoavoidthemines!Ifyouarefacing

amine,Tri-botwillbeep.Ifthemineisdirectlyinfrontofhim,hewillbeepmore

quickly.Turnawayfromtheminetofindaclearpath--ifhebeepsslowly,ordoesnot

beepatall,youcanmoveforward.Ifyouhitamine,Tri-botwillblowhistop!Hehas

plentyofminefieldstotestyou!

A.MakesureyoupointtheremotecontrollerdirectlyatTri-bot.VerifythatTri-bot’s

armsarenotpositionedinfrontoftheIRsensors.Iftheyare,repositionthem.If

thereisstillnoresponse,trychangingthe3x“AAA”sizealkalinebatteriesinthe

remotecontroller.

Q. My Tri-bot has trouble performing turns and is moving too slowly…

A.Makesurethereareneitherdirtnorfiberstrappedaroundthewheels.Ifthereare,

removecarefullywithadultsupervision,ifrequired.IfTri-botstillmovesslowly,try

replacingthe8x“AA”sizealkalinebatteriesinTri-bot.

Q.I cannot turn off my Tri-bot’s alarm...

A. TostopthealarmsoundingpressTri-bot’shead.Refertothe‘Alarm Mode’section
