Trinity Term 2015
Services and Music
Magdalen College Oxford
We welcome you to our worshipping community at Magdalen. Prayer and praise have
been offered to God in this place since the fifteenth century, when the College was
founded by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester. The statutes of 1480 make
provision for a Choir comprised of sixteen boy Choristers and a number of adult
Clerks, ‘that the worship of God, from whom all good things come, might be
increased more widely and better sustained’. That tradition continues unchanged
today. The Choirmaster at Magdalen retains the ancient Latin title Informator
Choristarum, and among those who have held the post over the centuries are John
Sheppard, Daniel Purcell, Sir John Stainer, Sir William McKie, and, in more recent
years, Dr Bernard Rose.
It is the aim of the Dean of Divinity and the Informator Choristarum always that our
services here should be dedicated to the glory of God. Our music is not an end in
itself but part of a larger whole. We hope that in the singing and in the silence, in the
spoken word and in the beauty of this house of God, you will feel that greater
presence, and be blessed by the peace that passes all understanding.
Daniel Hyde Michael Piret
Informator Choristarum Dean of Divinity
Trinity Term 2015
Services listed in bold type are sung by the College Choir
This term’s retiring collections will help support the daily life and work of the Chapel and Choir, especially our charity for Trinity Term,
which is Christian Aid.
Services Services are normally sung by Magdalen College Choir (men and boys). With the exception of 16 May, 13 and 20 June, Evensong on Saturdays is sung by Magdalen Consort of Voices (men and women). Tuesdays are sung by boys alone, and Fridays are sung by men alone. During the school half-term holiday, services from 24 to 29 May will be sung by men alone. This term sees the retirement of Professor Larry Dreyfus; we are delighted that Phantasm will be accompanying the Choir at Evensong on 16 May, 7 June and 4 July.
Organ music Organ music plays in integral part in our liturgy. Alexander Berry (Assistant Organist), and Anna Lapwood (Organ Scholar), play the organ for the majority of the services in Chapel.
Choir Recordings and Concerts
There are three recent CD releases which have been attracting widespread critical acclaim. Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri and John Ward’s Fantasies and Verse Anthems both involve the Choir and Phantasm. Our most recent release, Jubilate Deo, features the choral music of former Magdalen organ scholar, Matthew Martin. Copies of all available choir recordings may be purchased from the Bursary; please email [email protected] for more information. After the end of Full Term, the Choir will be giving a performance of Handel’s Messiah in St John’s Iffley Road, as part of the MCS Arts Festival, on Monday 29 June at 7.30pm.
Membership of the Choir Daniel Hyde is always pleased to hear from prospective applicants for Choristerships, Academical Clerkships and Organ Scholarships. To arrange an informal meeting, please email Melanie Bennette, the Chapel and Choir PA, at [email protected]. APRIL 25 SATURDAY
