Coming SoonComing SoonComing SoonComing Soon————Journey 10x10Journey 10x10Journey 10x10Journey 10x10
Starting next February our church is going on a 10 month journey of exploration and adventure. The process is family friendly. Here is the heart of it:
God created us to know Him, to love Him, to be in communion and community with Him. Consider the wisdom of the Westminster Catechism where it states that the chief end or purpose of humanity is to “glorify God and enjoy Him forever”.
“Enjoy” means to “delight, relish, savor, and adore”. Enjoyment and delight are fruits of Psalm 34:8 which urges us to “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him”! (NLT)
If we accept this wisdom, then it behooves us to slow down the busy pace of our lives and know God in greater depths of enjoyment and delight.
At a first quick glance, Journey 10 x 10 will probably overwhelm you. Your first reaction might be to reject the whole idea as too time consuming or seemingly impossible. We usually don’t like stepping outside our comfort zones. I urge you to consider that knowing God is well worth the time invested. The Journey will yield increased delight, satisfaction, and enjoyment.
Journey 10 x 10 is a ten month investment in 10 spiritual practices as means to discover God, anew and re-invigorated. “Journey” is a most appropriate term. “Journey” conveys exploration and adventure.
Those 10 spiritual practices are: 10 minutes per day of prayer and Bible reading each; and one act of each of the following: sharing a meal together, sharing your faith story, invitation, mission, fasting, tithing, Christian conversation, and a random act of kindness.
Learning a new vital skill takes time. No one is a born a master in the arts or sciences; likewise in faith. Journey 10 x 10 asks us to “practice the practices” over a 10 month period of time in order for them to become 2nd nature and natural to us.
Greater details will come in the next few months. The journey will include age appropriate guide books, and can be a family adventure and exploration of
faith. ~ Pastor JohnPastor JohnPastor JohnPastor John
Want Some Good News on Finances?Want Some Good News on Finances?Want Some Good News on Finances?Want Some Good News on Finances? Of course you do!!! And the Finance Committee has some good news for the 3rd quarter of 2015. Since July 1st with staff changes that were made, GCUMC has been able to pay all monthly bills including 80% of apportionments for period July 1 to September 30. For the period January through September, ¾ of the year, we have paid 50% of the annual apportionment owed. Last year we paid nothing. We are making progress thanks to your faithfulness and generosity. This aforementioned indicates that with cost reduction and continued generous giving the congregation is making progress toward meeting all financial obligations including apportionments in the future. As you consider year end giving, please remember that a substantial apportionment obligation is due part of which is the result of insufficient funds to meet the apportionment obligation during the first half of 2015. Let us rejoice in all that God is doing in our church, community, and our mission. November Sermon SeriesNovember Sermon SeriesNovember Sermon SeriesNovember Sermon Series

Fifteen years ago Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC) was just a vision that has now grown to an 8-acre campus on the south side of Chatham providing disaster-relief kits as well as educational and medical supplies to those in need at the local, national and international levels. The center has distributed 4.5 million pounds of supplies since 2003, which is when it started keeping track.
The Center welcomed more than 1,700 volunteers from 19 different states last year. Mark your calendars for 2016. We have a work day scheduled for Fri, Feb. 12.
Volunteers of all ages (11 & up) and abilities are welcome as help is needed in a variety of ways from packing kits, sorting items, preparing and sewing material for school bags, hospital gowns and quilts. Volunteers are sometimes needed to build crates or school desks or repair old bicycles, sewing machines or wheelchairs.
MMDC operates 100% from contributions with no debt. The agency operates on the policy that building additions or purchases of supplies are made only if the funds are on hand.
We join MMDC in giving God thanks and praise for the past 15 years of bringing hope to God’s children in times of need and look forward to our continued partnership with them in mission into the future. November Mission November Mission November Mission November Mission SocksSocksSocksSocks

Food Pantry at the HospitalFood Pantry at the HospitalFood Pantry at the HospitalFood Pantry at the Hospital
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, Dec 5, as that is the next time our church is scheduled to help with distribution for the Food Pantry at the Hospital. The distribution runs from 9-11am, though help is needed beginning at 7:30am. Also, some set-up help is needed the Friday evening before. Questions? Talk to Rick Ertel, Food Pantry board member. Call April in the church office to sign up to help. Bakery Pickup Volunteer NeededBakery Pickup Volunteer NeededBakery Pickup Volunteer NeededBakery Pickup Volunteer Needed
The Hospital Food Pantry is in need of a volunteer willing to pick up bread from County Market, serving one week at a time in a rotation with others. The duty involves picking up a box of whatever bakery products the store has left from the previous day. They ask that we come after 10am and this is every day for a week. The volunteer then transports items to the hospital, checking in at the main front desk, asking to be let in to the food pantry. Once inside, the volunteer double bags all items and places in the large freezer. There are usually between 5-10 items each day.
This is wonderful use of items that would normally go to waste. Melanie Warfield coordinates this effort and would be happy to work with someone to train them. Can you serve in this way? Contact Barb Horsch to find out more. Community Resources RoundtableCommunity Resources RoundtableCommunity Resources RoundtableCommunity Resources Roundtable
The next Community Resources Roundtable will meet Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 1:00 in the Moyer Library community room. Karen Zangerle, Exec. Director of PATH, Inc. in Bloomington will be on hand to talk about the social services her agency provides including coordination of the 2-1-1 help line. All interested are welcome to attend. The roundtable facilitates awareness and connection of social service resources with community needs.

Giving Tree 2015Giving Tree 2015Giving Tree 2015Giving Tree 2015
Our church i s again sponsoring a Giving Tree for needy children in our area. Each tag on the tree represents a child and will have their sizes and list some needs and wants. Tags will be available
by Sunday, November 29th. We only put one tag per child on the tree, so you may want to buy several items for this child, such as clothing and a toy. Also, school supplies and personal items are great to include in the box as well.
Please follow these guidelines:
• Sign out all tags on the sign-out sheets. • Return gifts to the church by December 13th • All gifts for a child should be placed into one box,
wrapped and decorated any way you wish. Attach the tag from the tree to the top of the box.
Same as last year, we will also be collecting winter hats and gloves. As you take a tag from the tree, if you could replace it with a hat or pair of gloves, it will keep the tree decorated. The hats and gloves will be donated to the local police and also the crossing guards. Gifts will be picked up by families on Thursday, December 17, between 8am and noon.
If you have any questions, please contact the church office.
Handel’s Handel’s Handel’s Handel’s MessiahMessiahMessiahMessiah
Singers of high-school age and above are invited to be part of Gibson Area Music Foundation’s
annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah.
Regular rehearsals are held Monday evenings, beginning November 2 at 7 p.m. Additional rehearsals are November 9, 16, and 23, with a final dress rehearsal
November 30. Regular rehearsals will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Gibson City, on the corner of Church and 11th Streets.
With an outstanding showing in 2014, organizers especially encourage sopranos and bass singers to return, plus newcomers are always welcome. High school students who participate are eligible for summer music camp scholarships awarded annually by the foundation.
Participants are asked to arrive a few minutes before 7 p.m. each week for check-in, if possible. Vocal scores will be provided at no cost.
The annual public performance will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 6 at the Gibson City Bible Church on Gibson City’s west edge, off Illinois Route 47. Willie Summerville of Urbana will again direct the chorus, soloists, pianist and strings. This year’s performance will be dedicated to Val Hunt and Douglas Hager.
For more information, contact Gibson Area Music
Foundation Co-Chairman, Bill Ogg (217-784-4480).
Learning in CommunityLearning in CommunityLearning in CommunityLearning in Community Pastor John recently attended The Upper Room’s 5-Day Academy for Spiritual Formation, a retreat for personal refreshment and renewal. Times of group study, silence, group discussion, personal reflection, worship, and fellowship were the rhythm of each day. This particular Academy’s topic was ‘humor’.
Another opportunity for an Academy will be right here in Belleville, IL, April 3-8, 2016. This Academy's title is “Healing, Wholeness, and Holiness: Connecting with God for the Healing of Ourselves and the World”. Faculty will include Marjorie Thompson, a leader in Upper Room Ministries, and will be held at beautiful King’s House Retreat & Renewal Center. For more information visit http://academy.upperroom.org/events/42.
Pastor John, Susan Schultz, and Barb Horsch are happy to speak with you about their experiences with Upper Room’s retreat Academies.

The 2015 Potato Bake was a Great success!! That success was because of all of you who gave so much of yourselves. We served about 300 dinners that included our workers. Everybody pitched in and we survived! We raised over $2,500 for local missions.

The Connection Team, with Pastor John's strong support, has a goal of establishing a Caring Ministry to recognize the needs of our congregation and provide care and
support to our members. One need that has been identified is the delivery of Holy Communion to our shut-ins, which had been done in previous years. We began this ministry in September and served three members. Please let the church office know: • If you know members who would appreciate this
service, • If you would appreciate this service yourself, or • If you are interested in being a part of this renewed
communion ministry. Questions may be directed to Judy Eckhoff, Janet Utterback, or Cathy Steidinger.

God’s Treehouse begins and ends with music! Our Elementary Kids (K-5) start out the night in the Sanctuary with Praise Songs led by Taylor Engel and Gabe Fairchild. If you are here for dinner, stick around and head to the Sanctuary at 6:30. It’s a beautiful thing to see all these kids worshipping in song!
Our Seeds (Preschool) end each night with “Gabe’s Songs”. I have two kids in this class and the first thing they talk about on the way home are the songs they sang with Gabe and getting to “strum” the guitar.
