    HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

    Verse I

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

    Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;

Holy, holy, holy! Merciul and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessd Trinity!

    Verse II

Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee,

    Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and seraphim alling down beore Thee,

    God everlasting through eternity.

    Verse III

Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,

    Though the eye made blind by sin Thy glory may not see;

Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,

Perect in powr, in love, and purity.

    Verse IV

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth,

    and sky, and sea;

Holy, holy, holy! Merciul and mighty!

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOuL

    Verse I

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

    When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, it is well with my soul.

    Rerai

It is well (it is well) with my soul (with my soul),

It is well, it is well with my soul.

    Verse II

Though Satan should buet, though trials should come,

    Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed His own blood or my soul.

    Repeat Refrain

    Verse III

My sin, oh, the bliss o this glorious thought!

My sin, not in part but the whole,

Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,

Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, O my soul!

    Repeat Refrain

Verse IVAnd, Lord, haste the day when my aith shall be sight,

    The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;

The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,

Even so, it is well with my soul.

    Repeat Refrain

appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Getup, take the child and his mother, and ee to

Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; or

Herod is about to search or the child, to destroy

him. 14 Then Joseph got up, took the child and

his mother by night, and went to Egypt, 15 and

remained there until the death o Herod. This

2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to

the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the

mother o Jesus said to him, They have no

wine. 4And Jesus said to her, Woman, what

concern is that to you and to me? My hour has

not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants,

Do whatever he tells you. 6 Now standing

there were six stone water jars or the Jewish rites

o purifcation, each holding twenty or thirty

gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, Fill the jars withwater. And they flled them up to the brim. 8 He

A FOLLOw-up ON BiShOp TuTuS DiS-iNViTATiON!ADVOCACy AND The ACADemy

    by Alain Epp Weaver

University of St. Thomas stones Nobel

    Peace Prophet Desmond Tutu:

Please Take Action! So began an

e-mail I received early this October

from Friends of Sabeel-North America, an advocacy

group working or justice and peace in Palestine-Is-

rael. The dramatic headline evoked biblical punish-

ment and the trope o the unwelcome, embattled

prophet. I soon received a similar email rom the

Muzzlewatch website, a project o the Jewish Voiceor Peace organization committed to creating

an open atmosphere or debate about US-Israeli

    policy.

Anglican Archbishop Tutu had been invited

by a local afliate o PeaceJam International, a

group dedicated to bringing Nobel Laureates into

conversation with youth, to speak at its spring 2008

conference. Since 2003, PeaceJam has held its

conerences on the campus o the University o St.

Thomas, a Catholic university in the Twin Cities,

and anticipated that 2008 would be no different.

    The university administration, however, decided

not to host Tutu. When the story became public in late September,

receiving extensive coverage in the Twin Cities

    local newspapers, the university administration

explained its decision as an attempt to be sensitive

to the local Jewish community. The concerns were

that there are some Jewish people in the com-

munity who eel that the Archbishop has stepped

over the line with his criticism o Israel and Israeli

policies, Doug Hennes, university vice presi-

dent, stated in the campus newspaper, The Aquin,

although he insisted that We did not receive any

pressure rom anybody in the Jewish community

    not to invite him.

At issue was a speech Tutu had given at an April

2002 Friends of Sabeel conference on Ending the

Occupation. [We published excerpts o Bishop

Tutus speech in The Guardianarticle here in your

bulletin on the second Sunday in November.]The Zionist Organization o America, among

others, objected to parallels drawn by Tutu between

the Israeli military occupation and apartheid-era

South Arica and claimed that Tutu had likened Is-

rael to the Nazi regime. Tutu published his speech

in the April 29, 2002 issue ofThe Guardianunder

the title, Apartheid in the Holy Land.

    Decrying the occupations checkpoint and

roadblock regime in the Occupied Territories, Tutu

asked, Have our Jewish sisters and brothers or-

gotten their humiliation? Have they orgotten the

collective punishment, the home demolitions, in

their own history so soon? Have they turned theirbacks on their proound and noble religious tradi-

tions? Have they orgotten that God cares deeply

    about the downtrodden?

This is a busy season. And its just gotten busier.

As it once was proclaimed by angels, Glory to God

in the highest and on earth peace. Let us be bold

this Christmas to proclaim and advance peace or all

    o Gods people.

[Bishop Tutu] proceeded to insist that, We live

in a moral universe. The apartheid government was

very powerul, but today it no longer exists. Hitler,

    Mussolini, Stalin, Pinochet, Milosevic, and

Idi Amin were all powerul, but in the end theybit the dust. A strongly stated, perhaps even

provocative, way o making the point that all

oppressive systems will one day come to an end,

but also not a claim that the Israeli government was

    equivalent to Hitler.

The decision not to invite Tutu created strong

opposition among aculty and students, and Jew-

ish Voice or Peace joined with other groups in a

campaign to urge St. Thomas not to stie ree and

rank consideration o Israeli government policies.

Even Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation

League, while strongly disagreeing with Tutus

evaluation o Israeli policies, urged St. Thomas toreconsider its stance. By October 10 the university

    had shited course.

I have wrestled with what is the right thing

to do in this situation, and I have concluded that

I made the wrong decision earlier this year not

to invite the archbishop, university president Fr.

Dennis Dease wrote in a message to the universitycommunity. Tutu and PeaceJam have been invited

to meet at the university next year, although the

event will most likely proceed at Metropolitan State

University, which agreed to host the conerence

ater St. Thomas turned down Tutu.

Ideally, the academy is a place where reasoned

disagreement is possible, and where one fnds

people passionately engaged in advocacy o dier-

ent types. How to think about the role o advocacy

in church and academy was the ocus o a recent

workshop at the University o Chicago Divinity

School, where scholars and clergy gathered to thinkabout the pitalls and promises o advocacy in their

    particular contexts.

The Tutu incident at St. Thomas reects the

complications that can arise, as noted by speakers

at the workshop and discussed in breakout sessions,

when issues that generate heated disagreement are

brought into these settings. Learning to have such

debates in a reasoned spirit o patience and charity

is challenging, but what certainly will not acilitate

intense discussions in either the academy or the

church is simply closing down the debate. One

can thereore celebrate St. Thomas decision to

reverse course and invite Tutu as underscoring theimportance o carrying on with contentious, even

    controversial, conversations.

DOnT BE FOOLED:The ReAL pROBLem iS NOT immigRATiON

    pAsTOrs pAge

Written by Edith Rasell, Minister for Workplace Justice

    Many Americans have a love-hate

    relationship with immigrant work-

    ers. We sometimes hate immigrants

who take our jobs. At the same

time, we love low prices, prices that may depend

on the very low wages paid immigrant workers.

But, when native-born workers are in conict with

immigrant workers, we all lose. A good society

can only be built on justice or allor immigrantworkers and or workers born in the U.S.

Chiapas is one o the poorest states in Mexico,

and the ormer home o many immigrants. A typical

coee armer in the highlands lives in a tiny house

with a dirt oor and a single dangling light bulb.

Everyone is well acquainted with poverty and hard-

ship. But as a tidal wave o economic destruction

has washed over the highland villages, people have

been orced to travel north to the U.S. seeking work.

Loved ones let behind ace the destruction o their

amily and community lie. When asked to identiy

their greatest problem, villagers name immigration.

Coee armers in Chiapas, and many other work-ers around the world, are losing their livelihoods

and ways o lie, due to biased international agree-

ments that avor corporations over workers. Skewed

economic policies are orcing people to leave their

homes to seek work and reuge rom a tsunami o

    economic globalization.

Workers in the U.S. are also conronting this tidal

wave o economic change and destruction. Global-

ization has brought stagnant or alling wages, a shit

rom well-paid manuacturing jobs to lower paying

ones, fnancial insecurity, and competition by im-

    migrants or jobs.

Immigration has become a hot-button issue. But,

the real problem is not immigrant workers. They are

oten victims o a system that serves neither native-

born nor oreign-born workers. A ew years ago,

the U.S. Department o Labor ound that none o

the poultry processing plants they examined paid

employees or all the time they worked. In meatpacking, more than one in every ten workers has a

signifcant injury each year. Both these industries

employ large numbers o immigrant workers. And,

immigrants rom Mexico are killed on their jobs in

the U.S. at a rate 75% higher than that of workers

    who were born here.

The problem or American workers is not im-

migration, but weak and poorly enorced workplace

protections. Most frms do not exploit workers, im-

migrant or native-born. But, some do. I these com-

panies can pay less than is required by law, violate

saety standards, fre a worker or get him deported

i he tries to orm a union, and do so with minimalpenalties or none at all, then we will see more frms

exploiting workers. Wages will continue to all, ben-

efts will continue to disappear, union membership

will continue to decline, and American workers will

become more fnancially insecure. The rich will get

    richer, and the poor, poorer.

The answer is not hostility to immigrants. Instead,

we must demand that politicians strengthen and

How do you combine a season o joyul expectation with one o penitence? Advent

includes both. The word, Advent, means coming or arrival. It marks the beginning

o a new year with potential or a brighter, more hopeul uture. To fnd this joy, however,

we need to realize the true nature o the world the lie into which Jesus comes. Perhaps, Isaiah

    expressed the combination best, with the words, People who walked in darkness have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. (Isaiah 9:2)

Penitence sounds rather orbidding, a time o sorrowul reection. Yet, it can be the darkness

that makes dawn more inspiring. Perhaps, the best part o penitence is its realism. I we are willing to

ace who and what we are, warts and all, then we no longer need to hide in pretense or outward

show. We can see and admit both our weaknesses and strengths. All o us have allen short at times,

both in what we do and who we are. Within our being, there is a measure of brokenness. No one

is perect, but we can be made whole again. God heals us, not with the kind o healing that leaves a

    scar, but with ull renewal.

Becoming aware o this can make us savor the experience o this season. We tell the doctor what is

wrong and are given a cure. The broken parts o lie come together to make a whole. We are set ree

rom a burden and can walk with a lighter step.

This is a good time to savor the charity that the season provides. It can be kind o an aha! expe-rience. Our lie comes into ocus. It is like the moment when the Prodigal Son realized that he would

be better o at home than where he was, even i he returned only as a servant. He was humbled, but

    TO dO JUsTiCe

World AIDS Day began in 1988 in

response to the global pandemic o

HIV/AIDS which was and still spreads,

    in the words of Pastor Wright, through: (1) blood;

    (2) semen; and (3) ignorance. World AIDS Day,

observed each year on December 1, is not only

about raising money to fnd a cure, but also about

raising awareness, advocacy, fghting prejudice, and

    improving education around HIV/AIDS. Below,

you will fnd an excerpt rom the Global Steering

Committee o the World AIDS Campaign.

Though these statistics produced by Bread or The

World are startling, we can do something about this

crisis. The United Nations Development Programestimates that the basic health and nutrition needs

o the worlds poorest people could be met or an

additional $13 billion a year. Animal lovers in the

United States and Europe spend more than that on

pet ood each year. More importantly, unds and

fnances that are continuously being spent to take

lives and oil in Iraq could be spent to preserve lie innot only this country but around the world.

As the latest report indicates, over 5,700

people died each day rom AIDS-related illnesses

in 2007. Over 6,800 people are still being

infected with HIV daily, about 1,200 of whom

are children under 15; 2,900 are women 15 years

and older. The inection rates in young peopleages 15-24 remain frighteningly high. We know

these inections and these deaths are preventable

and avoidable i promises by countries to scale up

access to prevention, treatment, care and support

for all are to be fullled by 2010. The reduced

fgures or the HIV epidemic and stabilization in

some areas o rates o inection in act make suchuniversal access by 2010 more achievable.

Yet, statistics go only so ar in showing the

extent o an epidemic, and this is particularly true

with HIV. Resources or inormation services,

health care, medicines, and support services still

all ar short o need. Stigma and discrimination

are rampant, and gender inequality, violence,

and poverty deny people access to accurate

    inormation, prevention, testing, counseling and

treatment. While these conditions still exist, HIVwill continue to spread.

At its essence, the epidemic is about people,

not numbers. Rates o inection and deaths

even in their millions do not begin to reveal

the true toll o AIDS on amilies and riends, on

communities, on people already at the margins

o society, on youth and women in particular. Yesterday, we celebrated the lie o Anthony

Hollins, who, among other things, stood boldly or

justice and compassion with and or those aected

and infected by HIV/AIDS. Anthonys voice was

a trumpet around the nation calling or increased

awareness, testing and justice with regard to those

infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. In Anthonysmemory, I urge you to do three things:

Get tested, so that you know your status;1.

Empower yoursel with awareness and education2.

about HIV/AIDS So that you will be able to

dispel the myths that abound. Our HIV/AIDS

ministry is more than willing to empower you

    with inormation;

Be an advocate or those inected and aected3.

    with this disease.

The ReSuLTS OF A ReDeemeD LiFeDO SOmeThiNg NiCe

One o the best ways to guarantee a great day is to ocus your atten-

tion on someone else. Several years ago, the spirit o Random acts o

kindness captured the imagination o the country. What a simple, yet

powerul concept the idea o doing something nice or someone else, with no expectations o anything in return.

One morning, I had the radio on, listening or a weather orecast, the

temperature and the trafc report. As I listened, a caller telephoned in

on his cell phone to report something he had just witnessed. Several

people were standing at a bus stop in a torrential downpour. Since the

storm hadnt been predicted, they had no protection rom the rain andwere getting soaked. One woman was holding her purse over her head,

as i it would protect her. The caller reported that he had watched as a

car pulled up beside the people on the curb as the driver jumped out

o his car, handed them an umbrella, and quickly got back into the car,

moved into the ow o trafc, and was gone. The caller was touched

by what he had seen and wanted to share the story o that simple, yetbenevolent gesture with those o us who were listening.

What a beautiul example o doing something or someone else.

I recently read, Share an umbrella with someone, and your heart

will be flled with sunshine. The giver o the umbrella that morning

surely had a heart flled with not only sunshine, but also with love and

compassion or his ellow man. Today and everyday, be ready to shareumbrellas with those who need them.
