Welcome to TW11

JULY has arrived as we say goodbye to exam stress, hello to school holidays and absorb the shock waves in the aftermath of a momentous referendum.

Teddington Village Fair was such fun, well done to Sheena, Lesley and the team. Thank you to everyone who popped by to say hello at our stall, it is always a pleasure to have a chat, and thank you for the supportive words and encouragement. It was, as always, lovely to meet you all. You can see pictures of the day on pages 6 & 7. Mr Ken Howe our much appreciated local historian, is a resounding success with the readership and judging by popularity could even run for PM with a bit of groundwork.

Tanya Dunbavin shares her long held dream of having a natural pool in the back garden on page 20, she is by no means alone there – #Drooling.

I hope you enjoy this edition of TW11 and I look forward to seeing you again next month.

IN JULY I SHALL MOVE AWAY from Teddington after 19

years in this very special town. In the Autumn I shall take up my post as the senior minister of Newbury Baptist Church in Berkshire. In the light of that, I have been doing some tidying

out. I came across a picture of a fresh-faced and smiling young man from my welcome service to Teddington Baptist Church in September 1997. Both the man and the town have changed a lot since then!

It is strange to think how much all our lives have changed in that time. Few people had the internet at home, viruses occurred in children and trolls in children’s books. Concorde roared overhead once each day and the word ‘drone’ referred to a boring speaker rather than an aerial toy.

Those who are familiar with Teddington’s townscape will know the large glass atrium which presents the Baptist Church’s face to the world. Opened in 2004, the redesigned church was a bold statement to the community of our intent to serve them, and we have sought to live up to it as much as we can. Many a consultation meeting has been held in the church, on everything from policing and pollution to hustings and hospitals. Nearly 1000 people pass through the building every week, and it is a privilege to welcome them.

Outside the church the town has changed a lot too. Newsagents, toy shops, bed retailers and bookshops have come and gone. It has been good to see Teddington ‘wake up’ to the gems it has to offer and movements like ‘Totally Locally’ have a vibrant voice here. Whenever the initiatives to shop locally come around they are a serious reminder that local business depends on local loyalty so far as is possible. If I had a key hope for the town it would be that co-operation between Upper and Lower Teddington might increase. It should take more than a railway bridge to divide us, I think!

As Baptist Minister I have felt honoured to play a part in helping the local business community. Whether advising on social media policy, introducing carols in the rain or judging the best mince-pie competition I have enjoyed it all. I hope that children for years to come will be opening those 24 little doors hidden around the town throughout the season of advent. A genuinely collaborative venture such as Christmas Doors has allowed the church to tell its story and the local businesses to increase their footfall

During my time here, it has been encouraging to see three charity ventures defy the odds thanks to the pooled talents of many. The Tale of The Littlest Star in 2011, The Tale of The Little Owl in 2013 and The Note in 2014 have all had significant contributions from local people which have made them possible. There are big plans afoot for The Note and Littlest Star will be available nationwide in shops this Christmas. These projects have brought out not just the creative talents but the generous spirits of all who have contributed to them.

These last few weeks I have been trying to make the most of our gorgeous Bushy Park. After all, sometimes we appreciate least the things we see the most.

Whenever I look back, it will be with great gratitude to Teddington.

Fewer Hairs But More Friends

I ONCE HAD A DREAM OF A NATURAL pool in my back garden or should I actually call it a lake.

Unfortunately as yet my back garden has never seemed quite big enough. The concept is a great one though, no nasty chemicals just swimming on sunny days with a little bit of nature and perhaps a few bugs and fish.

If you don’t happen to have a ten acre plot which I guess is all of Teddington, there are some alternatives. A company called Clearwater Revival design chemical free indoor and outdoor pools. These pools consist of a swimming area and a ‘regeneration area’. The swimming area could even be a traditional box rectangle shaped pool, it will look the same as a conventional pool but the water will be untainted and far more pleasant to swim in. The regeneration area of the pool is often contained within a separate miniature pool and is responsible for cleaning, filtering and oxygenating the water.

The plants that grow in the cleaning area could include reeds, cattails, water lilies or any other native plant that acts as a filter. Any animals or bugs will most likely be attracted to this area for its plant life, but these in turn will control any pest issues such as mosquitoes from laying their larvae into the water. Plants also serve you by consuming nutrients that could otherwise begin forming. However mosquitoes won’t be a problem if you circulate the water using a water pump that can be charged by solar energy. This in turn will clean, oxygenate and circulate the water. The two zones or levels also create a deep end and a shallow end to the pool which offers great functionality as some people can sit and chat or relax in the shallow end whilst others swim in the deep end and the different levels create a really interesting architectural feature.

If this is still on rather too large a scale for your plot then bringing in a landscaper to dig a jacuzzi into the ground so that it is flush and adding

some weathered stone and surrounding it with lots of green texture and planting will create a little bit of nature in your back garden. The jacuzzi can be heated by a woodburner which makes it more environmentally friendly and gives another heat source which could suit our British summertime!

VISITORS TO TEDDINGTON WILL VERY often walk the length of the High Street from the

railway bridge and come across Peg Woffington’s Cottages. A short while ago these included the Tea Rooms which in itself were worth the walk. At this point the visitor usually asks ‘Who was Peg Woffington?’

A good question. Peg, or Margaret, as she was known then, was born into a poor Dublin family on the 18th October sometime between 1714 and 1720. Her father, John Woffington, a journeyman bricklayer, died very soon after she was born. He was given a pauper’s burial and left behind a widow, two young girls and a mountain of debt. Young Margaret joined her mother in selling watercress door to door in the city. Whilst doing this, she was spotted by a lady impresario named Madame Violante who operated a variety show. One of her acts was to walk across the stage on a tightrope suspended above the stage, with a basket containing an infant suspended to each foot. Margaret was one of the infants. Fortunately or unfortunately the venture did not extend beyond one season and Margaret rejoined her mother on the watercress run.

However some years later when Margaret was aged about ten, Madame Violante returned with the Lilliputian Theatre Company and she recruited Margaret to the ensemble. Margaret’s starring role was Polly Peacham in The Beggar’s Opera. Her performance attracted the attention of theatre manager Thomas Elrington who signed her to the

Aungier Street Theatre. Here she played in Devil to Pay, Twin Rivals, Old Man taught Wisdom, or the Virgin Unmasked and Conscious Lovers. 1737 saw her at the Smock Theatre where she tackled Ophelia. All of these parts were in addition to Polly in The Beggar’s Opera. In April she gave what was considered her most bewitching impersonation, that of Sir Harry Wilder, a popular comic breeches part, in the Constant Couple.

By this time her fame had spread to London and she was soon booked for Covent Garden and on 6th November 1740 she appeared as Sylvia in The Recruiting Officer. The posters had her billed as Miss Woffington. She repeated the part on 8th November but this time the posters had her as Mrs Woffington, a name that she maintained. In playing Sylvia, the part required her to masquerade as a boy dressed in men’s hose. If it was not known that she possessed shapely legs before this performance, it certainly was afterwards. She took London by storm! The next few years were a whirlwind of popularity where she was on stage almost nightly taking on new plays and some Shakespearian classics in her stride. She moved to Drury Lane and there met David Garrick. She had returned to Dublin in the summer of 1742 where she was the uncrowned queen of the Dublin stage. She was Cordelia to Garrick’s Lear and on returning to Drury Lane she played Lady Anne to his Richard III.

They were known lovers and lived together at No 6 Bow Street WC2 as man and wife. Dr Johnson is known to have reported that Garrick became very cross when Peg, as she was now known, was too generous with sugar. However Fanny Burney praised her qualities when entertaining – ‘She was a hostess so attractive that her receptions were

crowded with people of distinction, and the table was never presided over so charmingly as when she was at the head of it.’ It is understood that she and Garrick had planned to marry in 1744 but this never came to fruition. Some say that Garrick wanted to control her career in every aspect and Peg was far too independent to allow that. They parted company in that year.

Whilst looking for a country residence, she heard that Teddington Place, the former home built by Sir Charles Duncombe, Lord Mayor of London, was up for sale. Peg viewed the property and decided to purchase it. After having settled herself there, she reckoned that it would be the perfect place from which to launch her sister Mary, more commonly known as Polly, into society. With the aid of her friend and manager, the playwright Brinsley Sheridan, she sought to assemble an all star cast of The Distressed Mother placing Polly in the lead. They hired a large barn in the neighbourhood (thought to have been in Broom Road) and fitted this out as a temporary theatre. The story goes that the curtain went up to a packed house but that young Polly was a bit wooden in her role and the plaudits went to an up and coming actress – Mrs George Anne Bellamy. This started a feud between Peg and Mrs Bellamy that was not resolved until Peg was on her deathbed.

Peg then concentrated on making a good marriage for Polly and a short time later, introduced her to Captain the Honourable George Cholmondeley, the second son of the Earl of Cholmondeley. After Peg had overcome the family’s objections, Polly and George were married in 1746 and moved into a

house in Westminster that Peg had acquired for them.

On the stage, Peg was as busy as ever, giving seemingly continuous performances throughout the year with the same blend of comic breeches parts to the classic roles from Shakespeare. She played Lady Jane Grey, a new play with

a performance that added greatly to her already high reputation. She went back to Dublin for three seasons and continued to sell out theatres.

In the course of her career, Peg managed to cross swords with the other main actresses of the day, Hannah Pritchard, Kitty Clive and George Bellamy. In 1756 whilst performing Roxana to her rival’s Statria, Peg drove Mrs Bellamy off the stage and stabbed her within sight of the audience. The reviewer of the day described as the ‘Green-room Squabble or a Battle Royal between the Queen of Babylon and the Daughter of Darius.’ Even more bitter than this feud was that between Peg and Mrs Clive – ‘no two women in high life ever hated each other more unreservedly that these two great dames of the stage.’

On 3rd May 1757 Peg was playing Rosalind in As you like it. It was to be her last performance. She had been in declining health all season and in the fifth act she turned to fellow actor, Tate Wilkinson, and complained of an indisposition. He gave her his arm and took her away. She changed her dress and returned to the stage saying that she was ill. She was into her epilogue when her voice broke, rendering her speechless. ‘She strove vainly to recall her words, screamed with terror, and tottered to the door where she was caught.’ She had suffered a stroke from which she never recovered. Peg dropped out of public life and resided quietly in Teddington until her death on March 1760. Peg Woffington was buried in St Mary’s Church Teddington.

There can be no doubt that in today’s celebrity climate, she would have filled the gossip columns apart from being a regular awards nominee. Sadly the view that she donated the Peg Woffington Cottages appears to be a popular myth as no concrete evidence has been found to support this.
