STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 

Life, by its very nature, is filled with storms. In more than one Biblical account, we hear about Jesus calming a storm. To‐day’s Gospel from St. Mark reports one of these incidents. Jesus is asleep in a boat carrying the Apostles across the Sea of Galilee.  

Presumably the storm was raging and was loud, but the Lord does not awaken. We might also imagine that the Apos‐tles are yelling and mak‐ing noise in an effort to combat the terrible weather, but that does not awaken Jesus. Certainly water in rain and waves is splashing on and into the boat, but He continues to sleep. However, when they call to Him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus wakes up immediately and responds to the problem.  

In the midst of the storms of our lives, we need to take the time to turn to God and ask for help. The Lord will respond. When He does, we need to be prepared for the same ques‐tion He poses to His Apostles, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” We must think of the many times in our lives when the Lord has blessed us, and kept us. Our faithful response to this love should be increased trust and a sense of stewardship of the gifts with which we have been blessed.

 REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL 

La vida, por su propia naturaleza, está lleno de tormentas. En más de un relato bíblico, hemos oído hablar de Jesús calmando una tormenta. El evangelio de hoy de San Marcos informa uno de estos incidentes. Jesús está durmiendo en un barco que transportaba a los Apóstoles a través del Mar de Galilea.  

Es de suponer que la tormenta estaba furioso y era fuerte, pero el Señor no despierta. También podríamos imaginar que los Apóstoles están gritando y haciendo ruido en un esfuerzo por combatir el terrible clima, pero eso no quiere despertar a Jesús. Ciertamente, en el agua de lluvia y las olas está salpicando en y en la barca, pero él sigue durmiendo. Sin embargo, cuando llaman a Él: "Maestro, ¿no te importa que perezcamos?" Jesús se despierta de inmediato y responde al problema.  

En medio de las tormentas de la vida, tenemos que tomar el tiempo para volverse a Dios y pedir ayuda. El Señor responderá. Cuando lo hace, tenemos que estar preparados para la misma pregunta le plantea a sus apóstoles: "¿Por qué estás aterrorizada? ¿Aún no tienes fe? "Hay que pensar en las muchas veces en nuestra vida cuando el Señor nos ha bendecido, y nos mantuvo. Nuestra respuesta fiel a este amor se debe aumentar la confianza y un sentido de la corresponsabilidad de los dones con los que hemos sido bendecidos.

The Wind and the Sea Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the ad‐vice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” Peo‐ple who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do.  

The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds.  

But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary.  We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643.  The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world.  Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

Summer brings with it a sea change in our neighborhoods. Suddenly, the streets are alive with joggers and baby strollers, the smells of backyard barbecue, and the drone of lawn mowers. As a Christian steward, have you given thought to your responsibility to your neighborhood? We take seriously the scriptural query, “Who is my  neighbor?” but do we ever ask, “But what of my neighborhood?” In our grandparents’ era, when many people lived in small towns and escaped the summer heat by sitting on porches in the muggy evenings, neighborliness came with the territory. Everybody knew who was having a baby, which family was suffering through illness, who had just experienced a death or a wedding. Problems in the neighborhood were shared concerns.   Today, in the era of two‐parent wage earners and automatic garage door openers, it’s easy to come home after a long day, hit a button and watch the neighborhood disappear as we enter the cocoon of our home. June offers us the opportunity to change that. Do you have a “back fence neighbor”? Maybe now, when he’s out in the yard, is the time to get to know him better. Host a barbecue, or a neighborhood potluck. Invite someone over for an  evening iced tea on the patio. If there’s a community picnic, be sure to go and introduce yourself around.  

 

 

 

 

Don’t miss the parish picnic. Invite your pastor over for burgers. Go for a long stroll in the early evening and look at your neighborhood with fresh eyes. Stop to visit with people working on their lawns or in their flower beds.  

There’s a famous quote: “All politics is local.” Do you know who represents your neighborhood on the city council and on the school board? Are you acquainted with your parish council members? The quote could very well have added that most religion is local as well, alive in our parish. The church, and the community, lives and breathes in the neighborhood. Is there a pressing local issue, a speed bump needed or a stop sign missing? Is there a  neighborhood clean‐up day? Get involved. For the Christian steward, opening our eyes to the people next door or to the folks sitting next to us in the pew can be a great project for a sunny summer.

as we enter the cocoon of our home.
