FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora

Back to school! The first day of school for Holy Name is this Wednesday, August 28th, the feast of St. Augustine. At school is where we learn a lot of things and grow our knowledge from learning the alphabet and tackling Alge-bra to knowing the ION in physics or chemis-

try. Well, actually there are lots of IONs (pronounced as ‘shən’) at school: Addition, multiplication, subtraction, division, examination, recitation, memorization and all the action and perfection. Speaking of memorization, you should quiz our long time parish-ioner, Mr. Aquilino Delen. He has memorized all 44 US presidents, in the correct order. Ask him if you see him. As school starts Mr. Delen also has an alphabet for us: A = Account for our life and use our time wisely. B = Believe in Jesus Christ, be salt of the earth and light of the world. C = Control our tongue, speak kindly, Avoid stress, depression and

cut our worries because if you worry and worry you are rushing yourself to the cemetery.

D = Deal squarely, fairly, honestly with other people E = Exercise our body and keep it healthy and strong F = Forgive the sins of others G = Give cheerfully without string attached H = Hope always, believing I = Imitate the best and maintain our integrity J = Judge generously, quickly confess our sins and be quick to listen K = Know God more and more and follow his commandments L = Love God above all things; love your spouses, family, and neigh-

bor M = Make friends, be kind, be gentle, be humble, honest and compas-

sionate N = Never stop trying; try and try until you succeed. O = Often manage our finances and save something for tomorrow P = Pray fervently and listen to God Q = Quote the Bible, read the scripture and live the Gospel of love R = Read quality books and other professional references to increase

our knowledge S = Serve others before you serve yourself. Smile and be happy T = Think big and be positive U = Use wise discretion and discernment skills V = Vengeance is wrong, walk away from it W = Watch our steps and think several times before we react and be

prepared before we cross the bridge X = X-ray ourselves, know our strength and our weakness Y = Yield to wise counsel and God’s will Z = Zealously live our life one day at a time.

Little Johnny asks the teacher, "Teacher, can I go to the bath-room?"

The teacher says, "Yes, but only after you recite the alphabet Johnny." Little Johnny says, "Fine" and quickly babbles out: “ABCDEFGHIJKLMNO_QRSTUVWXYZ!!!”

The teacher asks, "Where is the P?" Johnny screams, "IT'S RUNNING DOWN MY LEG!!! PLEASE

LET ME GO TO THE BATHROOM!!!"

The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Question: Why does the liturgy need reform from time to time? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: In order that the Christian people may more certainly derive an abundance of graces from the sacred liturgy, holy Mother Church desires to undertake with great care a general restoration of the liturgy itself. For the liturgy is made up of immutable elements divinely instituted, and of elements subject to change.

These not only may but ought to be changed with the passage of time if they have suffered from the intrusion of anything out of harmony with the inner nature of the liturgy or have become unsuited to it. Question: What goal and norms guided the Council when cre-ating reforms? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: In this restoration, both texts and rites should be drawn up so that they express more clearly the holy things which they signify; the Christian people, so far as possible, should be enabled to understand them with ease and to take part in them fully, actively, and as befits a community.

Wherefore the sacred Council establishes the following general norms: 1. Regulation of the sacred liturgy depends solely on the au-thority of the Church, that is, on the Apostolic See and, as laws may determine, on the bishop. 2. In virtue of power conceded by the law, the regulation of the liturgy within certain defined limits belongs also to various kinds of competent territorial bodies of bishops legitimately estab-lished. 3. Therefore no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the liturgy on his own authority. (TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK) Editor’s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. In the coming weeks we will be reviewing the constitution’s third chapter, “The Reform of the Sacred Liturgy.”

A WARM WELCOME TO OUR HOLY NAME SCHOOL & PRESCHOOL STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF!!

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 13: 22-30

The Narrow Door On their journey to Jerusalem, Jesus and the dis-

ciples had reached Archelais, a quiet country town in the region where the hills sloped down to the Jordan River.

Word of their arrival spread quickly through the region. Jesus and his followers first made their way to the town’s public water well where they found several old men si ng on a stone bench. The name “Archelais” was chiseled into the rock seat. The disciple Philip looked at the inscrip on and showing off his knowledge an-nounced: “Named in honor of one of King Herod’s three sons.”

The oldest of the men si ng on the bench stroked his white beard, got up, and ignoring Philip, approached Jesus. He looked closely into Jesus face and boas ng his own knowledge declared: “And you are Jesus the teach-er!”

Jesus smiled at him, “You say it.” The thirsty disciples waited for them to offer water

from their well. A crowd was already gathering and Jesus began to talk about the kingdom and being saved from destruc on.

Most Jews believed they would be saved in the me to come. Only a few isolated sects like the Essenes

thought they were the only ones who would find God’s favor.

The old man with the white beard raised a hand. “Sir, will just a few people be saved?”

Jesus didn’t answer directly. He said, “Do your best to go in through the narrow door; because many people will surely try to go in but will not be able.”

Some of the listeners who had been up to Jerusa-lem knew of the great gates to the city. When these gates were open, throngs could enter and one could even ride a camel beneath the high archways. But when the big, mbered doors were shut, only one person at a

me could pass through the small, narrow door at the side.

The old man pondered this as Jesus went on to warn them that once the doors were shut, it would be too late.

Jesus then told them: “There will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac and Ja-cob, and all the prophets safe in the Kingdom of God, and you yourselves will be rejected.”

The Jews assumed that God had prepared the King-dom for Israel. They expected to par cipate in it with the prophets. Hearing Jesus’ words made them consider that Jesus himself was the narrow gate through which they might enter the Kingdom.

It was dusk and some of the disciples were being invited to stay in people’s homes. Jesus was also invited, but he declined, wan ng to find some me to pray alone. His return to Jerusalem was ge ng closer every day.

He would camp just outside the town. In the morn-ing they would con nue on to Jericho, only a morning’s walk further south.

By moonrise Jesus had spread his robe on the ground and was si ng alone. He folded his hands to-gether and li ed his eyes beyond the stars and began to pray.

> The narrow door is difficult to enter if you are over-

weight with self-indulgence and encumbered with lots of worldly baggage. In many ways, the narrow door is also the servant’s entrance.

Narrow doors are for people who can leave it all behind and enter through it alone. Because it is a door, it can close. There will be a me when it will be too late for us. Today’s Gospel urges us to hurry.
