Sunday of the year

The Tenants of the Vineyard We remember the last two weeks Sunday Gospels were all about God’s vineyard. The Parable of the Tenants helps us to understand how we the tenants of the vineyard should behave. Adam and Eve were not the real owners of the Eden garden and they were the caretakers of the vineyard. God said to Adam, “Take care of all of creation; It doesn’t belong to you, it belongs to Me.” In the vineyard of God, we are the guests and the vineyard are given into our hands, because God loves us, no other reason. He really doesn’t want to make a profit; He just wants us to be content and happy and grateful. All He expects is a thank you! Statistics of the Catholic Church I hereby give a statistics survey of our Catholic Church published recently by the Vatican. This would help us to form an idea of the changes that have occurred in the dimensions of the Church itself and its members. The comparisons were made between 2013 and 2018, that is, for the first 5 years of the pontificate of Pope Francis. Bishops: The number of bishops in the world has increased from 5,173 to 5,377 (3.9 percent). The biggest increases (more than 4 percent) were in Oceania, the Americas, Asia and Europe, while in Africa they increased 1.4 percent.

Catholics: With regard to baptized Catholics, between 2013 and 2018 there has been a reduction in the relative numbers in European and North American countries and an increase in all other geographical areas. Catholics in the world in those years increased by almost 6 percent, from 1.254 billion to 1.329 billion, an increase of 75 million. At the end of 2018 Catholics made up just under 18 percent of the world population. This percentage has remained almost unchanged over the years surveyed. To be more precise, the highest percentage is found in the Americas, with 63.7 Catholics per 100 inhabitants, followed by Europe with 39.7 Catholics per 100 inhabitants, Oceania with 26.3 and Africa with 19.4. The lowest incidence is that of Asia (3.3 Catholics per 100 inhabitants), due to the significant number of non-Christian believers on this continent. The distribution of Catholics among the various continents differs greatly from

that of the population. In the Americas, for example, the population continues to be around 13.5 percent of the world total, while the number of Catholics has decreased by one percentage point, dropping to 48.3 percent of the world’s

CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE…

Page 3: Twenty seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time - WordPress.com

Catholic population. The number of Catholics in Asia has grown slightly – from 10.9 to 11.1 percent – but is much lower than the continent’s population (about 60 percent in 2018). Europe yields a population count 4 points lower than that of the Americas (9.6 percent), but its percentage in the Catholic world is lower than that of American countries (21.5 compared to 48.3 percent).

Priests: The number of priests decreased by 0.3 percent during this five-year period, confirming a trend already underway. Between 2013 and 2018, priestly numbers increased by 1,400 in the first two years, and then decreased in the following three years. At the end of 2017, there were 414,582 priests. Encouragingly, they increased in Africa (+14.3 percent) and Asia (+11 percent). In America they remained constant (about 123,000). They decreased in Europe (-7 percent) and Oceania (-1 percent). The distribution of priests in the various continents sees a prevalence of European priests (41.3 percent), whose numbers have decreased greatly in the last three years, followed by American priests. The Asian clergy make up 16.5 percent of the total, the African clergy 11.5 percent and that of Oceania 1.1 percent.

Permanent Deacons: A rapidly evolving reality in all continents is that of permanent deacons, who rose from 43,195 in 2013 to 47,504 in 2018, an increase of about 10 percent.

Religious Brothers: On the other hand, the number of professed non-priest religious has continued to decrease over the years, and from 2013 to 2018 it decreased by almost 8 percent, from 55,000 to less than 51,000. The exceptions are Africa and Asia, where there has been a certain increase. Major Seminarians: With regard to the major seminarians there is also a tendency toward a slow decrease. Candidates for the priesthood in the world decreased by 2 percent in the period considered, from 118,251 in 2013 to 115,880 in 2018, with strong decreases in Europe (-15.6 percent) and The Americas (-9.4 percent). The continent that shows an encouraging opposite trend is Africa (+15.6 percent).

Nuns: The drop in the number of professed nuns is cause for concern. They have decreased by 7.5 percent in the 5 years considered. The total number has decreased from 694,000 in 2013 to less than 642,000 in 2018. The decline concerns Europe, Oceania and The Americas, with decreases between -15 percent and -12 percent. On the other hand, there were increases of +9 percent in Africa and +2.6 percent in Asia, so that the relative percentages of European and American religious decreased in the total numbers. (From the Pontifical Yearbook 2020 and the Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae 2018.) Have a beautiful week end,

Fr. Johny Arattukulam, OCD

This weekend there will be a retiring collection for the Peter’s Pence Appeal. This is normally part of our ‘Annual Collection’ which has not been held this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is an offering that each member of the faithful decides to give to the Pope so that he can provide for the needs of the whole Church, wherever it is most in need. Collectors will be outside the church to accept your contribution.

Peter’s Pence is the name given to the financial support offered by the faithful to the Holy Father as a sign of their sharing in the concern of the Successor of Peter for the many different needs of the Universal Church and for the relief of those most in need. First Reading

A reading from the prophet Isaiah 5:1–7

Let me sing to my friend the song of his love for his vineyard.

My friend has a vineyard on a fertile hillside.

He dug the soil, cleared it of stones, and planted choice vines in it.

In the middle he built a tower, he dug a press there too.

He expected it to yield grapes, but sour grapes were all that it gave.

And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah,

I ask you to judge between my vineyard and me.

What could I have done for my vineyard that I have not done?

I expected it to yield grapes. Why did it yield sour grapes instead?

Very well, I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard:

I will take away its hedge for it to be grazed on,

and knock down its wall for it to be trampled on.

I will lay it waste, unpruned, undug; overgrown by the briar and the thorn.

I will command the clouds to rain no rain on it.

Yes, the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the House of Israel,

and the men of Judah that chosen plant.

He expected justice, but found bloodshed, integrity, but only a cry of distress.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 79:9, 12–16, 19–20

R. The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel. You brought a vine out of Egypt; to plant it you drove out the nations. It stretched out its branches to the sea,

to the Great River it stretched out its shoots. R. Then why have you broken down its walls? It is plucked by all who pass by. It is ravaged by the boar of the forest,

devoured by the beasts of the field. R.

God of hosts, turn again, we implore, look down from heaven and see. Visit this vine and protect it,

the vine your right hand has planted. R. And we shall never forsake you again: give us life that we may call upon your name. God of hosts, bring us back;

let your face shine on us and we shall be saved. R.

SECOND Reading

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Philippians 4:6–9

There is no need to worry; but if there is anything you need, pray for it, asking God for it with prayer and thanksgiving, and that peace of God, which is so much greater than we can understand, will guard your hearts and your thoughts, in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that we love and honour, and everything that can be thought virtuous or worthy of praise. Keep doing all the things that you learnt from me and have been taught by me and have heard or seen that I do. Then the God of peace will be with you. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! I call your friends, says the Lord,

Because I have made known to you Everything I have learnt from my Father.

Alleluia! GOSPEL

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 21:33–43

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: ‘Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third. Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them. “They will respect my son,” he said. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.” So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They answered, ‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures:

It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful to see?

‘I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Vinnies Local Community Appeal The Mandurah Conference is extremely pleased and grateful for the response to our first Mandurah Local Community Appeal to raise funds to support Vinnies work in Mandurah. The total raised has not been finalised yet and may not be known until all the online donations come in. The innovative idea of using the Tap and Go Points was popular as $192 was col-lected this way, and many parishioners gave positive feedback on the proposal to use it. The Appeal in WA actually closes at the end of October and so there is still time to donate - either through the envelopes at the rear of the church or ONLINE - Open - www.vinnies.org.au. - Click on Donate at top right of screen, - scroll down to "Give to a local cause" - make sure WA is selected, - click on WA Local Community Appeal. - Enter amount, - select "Once" or "Monthly" - click "Next Step" - Enter your contact details - select whether you wish to receive updates from Vinnies - enter "Mandurah" in comments box, - proceed to "Payment Options".

Readings and Commentaries

Vineyards and olive groves are still to be seen gracing the hillsides of Israel and Palestine. They have both played a significant role in the agricultural economy of the region. More importantly for us vines, vineyards and grapes have all served as important symbols in the religious imagination of Israel. Prophets and poets often spoke of Israel as God’s vineyard. It is no surprise that Jesus makes use of this time-honoured tradition. Both Isaiah and Jesus are inviting us out of our scientific mindsets into the world of symbol and myth. How could they do otherwise? Their subject is love. All they have to say is about the love affair between Creator and creation, between Divine Lover and humankind. Love demands a poetic form of discourse, and this is what we are given today. But prophetic poetry can convey hard truths and pronounce sentence as we soon see. In between these challenging texts Paul invites us to imagine ourselves filled with the peace of God. “There is no need to worry . . . The God of peace will be with you”.

Reflecting on the Gospel This parable can tell us much about God, the owner of the vineyard. It tells us that God trusts us. The owner rented out the vineyard and then the country trusting that it would be looked after. The parable also tells us that God is patient. Servant after servant is sent! Finally it tells about God’s justice. What is your image of God – who is God for you? What do you think God is like? What words or images describe how God loves, how God acts, how God is just?

Paul’s calm encouragement of the Philippians stands in stark contrast to the threat of judgment conveyed by the vineyard stories of Isaiah and Jesus.

Paul offers a strategy for peace of mind amid the current turmoil of our troubled world and fractious society. He invites us to reflect on our spiritual diet. On what do we feed our minds, our hearts, our spirits? How much of it

is junk, or worse still, poison?

The coronavirus crisis that has forced us to re-assess our habits also gives us the chance to nourish our inner health. It’s time to seek out the company, the reading, the practice of prayer, the attention to nature that will lead us to the peace of God.

Our Lady of the Rosary

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on 7th October.

It was known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory.”

The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted to honour Mary for the Christian

victory over the Turks at Lepanto on 7th October, 1571.

Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the

Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle

through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.

Troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire had invaded and

occupied the Byzantine Empire by 1453, bringing a large

portion of the increasingly divided Christian world under a

version of Islamic law. For the next hundred years, the Turks

expanded their empire westward on land, and asserted their

naval power in the Mediterranean. In 1565 they attacked Malta,

envisioning an eventual invasion of Rome. Though repelled at Malta, the Turks

captured Cyprus in the fall of 1570.The next year, three Catholic powers on the

continent – Genoa, Spain, and the Papal States - formed an alliance called the Holy

League, to defend their Christian civilization against Turkish invasion. Its fleets

sailed to confront the Turks near the west coast of

Greece on October 7, 1571.Crew members on more

than 200 ships prayed the Rosary in preparation for the

battle - as did Christians throughout Europe,

encouraged by the Pope to gather in their churches to

invoke the Virgin Mary against the daunting Turkish

forces. Some accounts say that Pope Pius V was

granted a miraculous vision of the Holy League's

stunning victory. Without a doubt, the Pope

understood the significance of the day's events, when

he was eventually informed that all but 13 of the

nearly 300 Turkish ships had been captured or sunk.

He was moved to institute the feast now celebrated

universally as Our Lady of the Rosary.
