She was encouraged by her manager to en- ter the competition and it “just made sense” for her to enter. “I’ve been singing all my life, I started in pre-school, sang in the church youth choice and even joined an international jazz band in high school, I really love it.” “When I arrived at work one day, there was a big surprise for me; I found out I had been announced in the top 10 and after that my manager called me to tell me I had made it into the top 6, I called my mother and we started crying we were so happy.” Training Chesna packed her bags for Johannesburg and was welcomed to a whole new world of great learning and experiences. “Making it into the top 6 has really boost- ed my confidence”, she says. Emails have been doing the rounds sayingthat Cape Town is on the verge of loadshed-ding to save electricity.The loadshedding schedule, which is
available on the City of Cape Town’s web-site, will however only be activated if Eskomdecides to implement loadshedding.TygerBurger posed a few questions to the
energy provider, and at the time of going topress, spokesperson Goitsemang Nkomosaid: “Eskom does not currently have plansto loadshed and has not issued a loadshed-ding schedule.”This news in itself baffled spokespersons
at theCity of CapeTown, since theywere un-der the impression that loadshedding is im-minent.National spokesperson for Eskom, Hilary
Joffee clarified the matter: “Look, we do nothave anything planned now. We work fromhour to hour, not day to day. Of course wehave a plan, but it depends when you ask.Right now (Monday late afternoon), the de-mand is very high again, so we urge the con-sumer to be considerate.“We have deals with big energy users, but
it is residential customers whomust help usavoid loadshedding by conserving energy inthe evening in winter. It is a challenge forus to keep the lights on, but people can restassured thatwe are doing everythingwe canto avoid loadshedding.”Peak demand thiswinter is forecast at 36.8

Daar is bitter min pa’s en seuns watsuksesvol kan saam boer. Dis gewoon-lik ’n “gevegsfront” van kopstampe
en haakplekke wat baie boere eerder soosdie plaag vermy.
Die Steenkamps van Groenland-wyn-landgoed is egter ’n unieke uitsonderingmet ’n pa-en-seun-wenkombinasie wat diélandgoed al ’n string wyntoekennings oordie jare besorg het – 45 toekennings, om pre-sies te wees.
Die TygerBurger het Dinsdagmiddag ’ndraai gaan maak by pa en seun in die gesel-lige proekamer.
En so tussen die proe deur besef menshoekom die twee só ’n gedugte span is.
Die wynmaker, Kosie Steenkamp, en syseun, Piet, assistentwynmaker en wingerd-boukundige, boer al sedert 2001 saam op diepragtige plaas in die Bottelaryheuwels –vrugbare wynland wat al drie geslagte aandie familie behoort.
En dis juis die dinamiese saamwerk tus-sen pa en seun wat die sukses van die plaasverseker. “Ons is beste vriende, ons blysaam, werk saam, kuier saam, braai saamenkyknatuurlik saamrugby,” sêKosie, ter-wyl hy die goeie verhouding tussen hulleverduidelik. “En as ons die dag ’n kopstampondervind, gaan die son nie sak sonder datdit uitgepraat is nie,” voeg hy beslis by.
Dis ooglopend dat die pa en seun grootliefde, respek, waardering en vertroue tus-sen hulle deel.
“My pa is ’n baie ‘cool’ superboer met sykort denimbroek en lang kouse.
“Hy lyk nes ’n regte boer moet lyk,” vertelPiet laggend as hy besin oor sy kinderjareop die plaas wat hy nog nooit verlaat het nie.
“As ons as jonges partytjies in die skuurgehou het, het ek altyd my pa geroep sodatalmal kan sien hoe ’n boer nou moet lyk,”
sê hy trots. En Kosie het dieselfde respekvir Piet. “Ons is albei boere in murg enbeen, maar iemand moet die bemarkingdoen,” sê hy oor dié sakeverpligting watPiet ook sedertdien oorgeneem het.
En kort op seun Piet se hakke, is klein-seun Jacobus (5). “Daar is geen twyfel daar-aan dat hy ’n boer gaan wees nie.
“Hy leer van kleins af oor die boerderyen is amper nooit sonder ’n snoeiskêr in diehand nie. Hy is baie erg oor die plaas,” sêPiet oor sy seun, wat skamerig buite dieproekamer rondhang tydens die onder-houd, snoeiskêr in die hand.
Nes die mense van Groenland, is die wyneook eg, heilsaam en eerlik. Dis geen wonderhulle spog met soveel topverkopers nie.
“Ons glo in waarde vir geld,” sê Kosie vansy wyne. Groenland is een van die 21 wyn-produseerders wat by die eerste TygerBur-

Musiekborgskap: Shoprite/Checkers het onlangs R20 000 geborg vir ’n kunstenaarsontwikkelingsprogram waar hulle die onderrig van drie studente by Riana Van Wykmusiekskool inBrackenfell vir ses maande betaal. Die wenners, Hizel Riffel (Paarl), Bussine Mbadinga (Kaapstad) en Francois Marais (Kraaifontein), sal onderrig ontvang in kitaar, musiekteater, dans ensang. Musiekwêreld het ook hierdie projek ondersteun en vir elke wenner ’n Yamahakitaargeborg ter waarde van R1 900 elk. Links agter is Francois Marais, Riana van Wyk en LanaBoyce van Shoprite. ing their way to Broadway with a scholar-ship and summer camp, respectively.
Megan van Hagt, a Grade 11 learner ofCurro Private School, and Kayla Cloete, aGrade 9 learner of Fairmont High School,both successfully auditioned for the NewYork Film Academy.
The New York Film Academy trains art-ists for musical theatre, acting and film-making.
Megan had to prepare two songs and twomonologues to present to the head of admis-sion of the New York Film Academy in CapeTown.
ScholarshipShe was awarded a full scholarship to
study musical theatre from the beginningof January 2015 for two years. She willstudy singing, dancing and acting.
At 15, Kayla is the youngest of the stu-dents and has been selected to do four-weeksummer camps in New York. The summercamps will cover the whole film industry.
Kayla also prepared two songs and a mon-ologue from the movie, Pitch Perfect.
Bursaries are only awarded for students17 years and older to study at the musicaltheatre in New York, said her mother, Ger-da Burger.
According to her mother Kayla receivedvery positive feedback. “They said she has
a unique voice and that her presence fillsthe room. They were also impressed withher acting style and her improvising, aswell as her energy,” Burger said proudly.

CompetitionsMegan has been singing at the school for
the past eight years. She started doing localsinging competitions three years ago andhas won many prizes, medals and accoladesfrom the various local singing competi-tions, such as The Barnyard Talent Search,Gemini Singing Competition and South Af-rican Talent Championship (Satch) held atVodaworld in Johannesburg.
Singers and performers come from allover the country to compete in Johannes-burg at the finals where they are awardedbronze, silver, gold and double gold medalsfor their achievements.
Megan received first place in two of hercategories, winning two double gold medalsand two gold medals for her other catego-ries in October 2012.
The judges select certain participants torepresent South Africa in Orlando, Floridaat a big casting conference called AMTC.Megan has been invited there twice – in 2011and 2012 – for her achievements at this com-petition.
She also achieved Student of the Yearaward at The Centre Stage PerformingSchool in 2011.
Kayla did her audition at the AlexanderUpstairs Theatre in Cape Town with BlakeBabbit and Jack Newman, both directors ofthe New York Film Academy.
Kayla has been a student with The CentreStage Performing School for the past fiveyears. She has been a guest artist for a stageproduction, singing South Africa’s nationalanthem in 2011.

The fact that “no chargeswere brought due to the youngage of the children involved” isan even bigger injustice.
What is going to deter thesechildren from continuing withtheir behaviour if there is nopunishment given when theyare caught?
These children need to beapprehended and punished insome way so that they realisethere are consequences for whatthey do. Maybe then they willthink twice before torturing aninnocent animal.

More than 2 000 Capetonians havealready been displaced in recent storms,but it’s not just humans who needwarmth. If it’s too cold for you, it’s toocold for animals too.
One very simple way to help bothhumans, and our four-legged friends, isthe donation of blankets. There are manyorganisations around Cape Town, like theCape Town Angels and the Animal AntiCruelty league, who are helping todistribute blankets to those in need.
A decent, warm, polar fleece blanketcosts as little as R45 and can make ahuge difference to someone’s life.
Polar fleece blankets are not always asthick as others, but some organisationsrequest these, as they dry quicker thantraditional thick blankets, a huge advan-tage when sunshine is scarce. A quickGoogle search for “Donate blankets CapeTown” brings up more than enoughsuggestions of organisations who arecollecting blankets this winter.

Ingredients:. 500g long grain rice. 250 lentils. 2 tbls olive oil. 3 large onions. Thinly sliced. 1kg seafood mix.. calamari, crab,mussels, kingklip fish and black tigerprawns. 30ml buttermilk. 2 tomatoes, skinned and chopped. 2 whole green chillies. 5ml ground cumin. 5 cloves. 5 all spice. 5 cardamom seeds. 2 pieces whole cinnamon. 60ml butter. 250 ml hot water
Masala. 6 cloves garlic. 5 ml salt. 2 green chillies. 15ml cumin. 30ml lemon juice. 5 ml turmeric

Method:Boil rice in salted water until done, about 10minutes. Rinse in cold water and drain. Boillentils separately in salted water for 15minutes, until done, rinse in cold water, anddrain. Heat up saucepan and braise onionsuntil golden brown, drain, preserve half andset remainder aside in saucepan.To make masala, pound garlic, salt andchillies in a mortar and pestle and combinewith other ingredients. Smear over fish/seafood mix, and fry seafood in a separate wellheated pan, until cooked and firm. Removefrom pan and keep warm. Combine buttermilk, tomato, cumin, cloves, all spice,cardamom seeds and cinnamon, add toonions in saucepan, and simmer for 5minutes. Adjust seasoning.Sprinkle cooked rice and lentils over andarrange the seafood by gently stirring.Spoon preserved onions and spice mix overand a dot of butter, sprinkle water over andclose saucepan tightly. Steam over highheat for 57 minutes, reduce heat andsimmer low for another 5 minutes. “They’re the best live act I’ve everseen,” and “These guys are fantas-tic,” are some of the things you’llhear people say after a De Wallenshow.
This probably has a lot to do withfrontman, Jeandré Swanepoel,whose energetic stage personalityhas seen him described as a mixturebetween Mick Jagger and Tim Cur-ry’s “Dr Frank-n-Furter”.
It’s not just Jeandré who has peo-ple talking though. The rest of theband have some serious musicalchops too.
Lead guitarist, Justen Hosken,has a Grade 3 practical in guitar, butwill be doing his Grade 5 theory andGrade 8 practical in September,while rhythm guitarist, PieterBekker has a Grade 5 in guitar andtheory from Unisa. Drummer, Daw-id Bosman has his Grade 8 in drumsfrom the Trinity Rock School inLondon and Jeandré himself has aGrade 6 from Trinity Rock Schooland Grade 5 from Unisa in guitar.
Together with new bassist, Bran-don Bell, De Wallen is on a one-bandmission to bring “dirty, sexy, rock’n roll” back.
When TygerBurger last spoke tothe band, in June last year, the bandwas just starting out.
When asked what has happenedsince then, Jeandré says: “Aandklashappened!” referring to the Aandk-las Battle of the Bands, which theband won last year, earning them arecording deal and a good few highprofile gigs.
Before that though, the band hada few lineup changes, with Justenjoining the family as an extra gui-tarist and Brandon stepping in to re-place their bassist.
“There’s always going to be a dif-ferent energy when you add some-one new to the band,” Brandon
points out, while Justen confirmsthat the two brought new influencesto the band’s sound.
Justen also adds that while theirsound is always developing, at itscore their music is “riff-rock”.
When any of the members listento something new, they bring it backto the band and that, Jeandré says,is what keeps them relevant. “Itkeeps our performances fresh,” hesays.
The band all cite the Aandklasbattle as a milestone in their career.
“It just meant to me, that we arebusy making it,” Pieter says, addingthat it helped the band progress, asopposed to getting stuck in a rut.
“It just opened my eyes,” Justensays, explaining that while manybands win things, the opportunityto record made him realise that theband could get serious and that hedidn’t want them to waste the oppor-tunity.
Jeandré shares Justen’s senti-ments, saying: “That was the nightwhen I realised I’m in this for good.”
The band recorded with JustinVersfeld at Sun Studios and their
production will be done through Pa-triot Productions.
Since winning the Battle, De Wal-len have opened for acts like aKingand Van Coke Kartel.
“Every gig we play is bigger thanthe previous one and we just haveto keep stepping up our game,”Brandon says.
Their next big gig is Friday atMercury when they will play withRed State and The Footnotes. Tick-ets for the show cost R30 at the door.
De Wallen is hoping to start send-ing out their first single to radio sta-tions soon. They will launch theiralbum at Aandklas in Stellenboschin August.

begunstigdes, wat self die kaartjies moetverkoop.Potgieter sê hul dag begin om 08:00 wan-
neer drie onderwysers opnames van leer-ders vir die dag by al die hospitaalsale gaandoen. Daarna kom hulle terug skool toe, omskoolwerk vir die leerders te kry wat bedlê-end en te siek is om skool toe te gaan.“Daar is 12 sale indiehospitaal endie getal
kinders wat ons opvoed verskil van dag totdag. Daar is geen vaste bywoningsregister-
nie, want dit verander elke dag na gelangvan hoeveel kinderpasiënte daar in die hos-pitaal is,” sê Potgieter.“Die meeste van die leerders kan ook nie
gemeng word nie, want hulle het verskillen-de mediese probleme, swak immuunstelselsen sommige het ernstige en aansteeklikesiektes.”Sy sê die kinders wat skool bywoon, moet
ook eers soggens eet en medikasie gebruikvoorhulle skool toekangaan.Al die leerdersmoet om 12:00 weer terugbesorg word by dieverskillende hospitaalsale vir etenstyd. Dieonderwysers gaan doen ook dan opvolgbe-soek aandie leerders bywiehulle die oggendskoolwerk gelos het. Hul amptelikewerkdageindig om 14:30.“Wanneer die kinders teruggaan sale toe
voel hulle beter, want die skool is ’n bekendeomgewing, maar baie was nog nooit in ’nskool nie. Dis hartverskeurend,” sê Potgie-ter.Sy spog dat die skool ook die nasionale
kurrikulum volg soos deur die Wes-Kaapseonderwysdepartement (WKOD)voorgeskryfword, maar nie sport doen nie.
Oefening“Ons kry weekliks kinderkinetika-stu-
dente van die kollege wat vir die leerders fi-sieke oefening kom aanbied. ’n Groep vry-willigers het ook onlangs aangebied om onsleerdersmethul leesvaardighede tehelp,” sêsy. Die skool bied ook weekliks kunsklasseaan, en elke twee weke bak-en-brou-lesse.Geen van die leerders wat die skool by-
woon betaal egter skoolgeld nie, omdat hullealmal pasiënte van Tygerberg-hospitaal enuit minderbevoorregte omstandighede af-komstig is.Die skool ontvang slegs ’n basiese staats-
toelaag en is verder heeltemal afhanklik vanskenkings en geldinsamelings. Die gewildejaarlikse damestee is al geldinsameling wat
die skool kan hou weens ’n tekort aan vry-willigers om dit te help reël.Vanjaar se damestee was ’n groot sukses
en die gasspreker by die geleentheid was El-len Pakkies.“Geld bly maar altyd ’n uitdaging. Ons

neurskap en ’n passie om mense te help, is die dryfveer agter
Abigail Florence se Elves at Work. Die maatskappy vervaardig
strooikussings en dekens van topgehalte vir die binnenshuise
ontwerpbedryf en spesialiseer ook in die aanbied van ’n verskei-
denheid opleidingsprogramme in basiese naaldwerk, brei, hekel
en borduur vir individue, korporatiewe groepe en sosiale groepe.
Terwyl Abigail jare gelede as ’n binnenshuise ontwerper gewerk
het by OKHA Interiors in Kaapstad, het sy al hoe meer bewus
geword van die bedryf se aanvraag vir pasgemaakte sagte
dekoritems van goeie gehalte. Om in hierdie behoef-
te te voorsien, het sy Elves at Work op die been
gebring, waarin sy die naaldwerkvaardighede
van mense in haar gemeenskap gebruik. Die
onderneming het intussen uitgebrei om
basiese naaldwerk- en naaldwerkkunsoplei-
ding in te sluit.
Elves at Work is onlangs gekies as een van
die begunstigdes van Media24 se Ruimte
om te groei-maatskaplike verantwoordelik-
heidsinisiatief van R24m. As deel van dié projek
gee Media24 vir klein ondernemings R1m. se ad-
vertensieruimte in sy gedrukte en aanlyn-publikasies
om hul onderneming te bevorder. Twaalf klein, mikro en
mediumgroot besighede kry die geleentheid om hul onderne-

The 2012/2013 cricket season was one of themost successful seasons the DurbanvilleCricket Club experienced in its 55 years ofexistence.Despite the lack of sponsorship, funding
and limited sports playing facilities, the clubhas continuously acknowledged and em-braced its social responsibility role.The senior section of the club achieved the
following achievements during the2012/2013 season:
V WPCA Club of the Year Trophy: 2012/2013 season.
V First team winners of the WPCA Divi-sion 1B League Trophy and Combined1A/1B Division One Day ChampionshipsTrophy. The team was Division 1B AMA 20semi-finalists and promoted back to WPCA1A Division.
V Second team winners of the WPCA Re-serve A Two Day League Trophy.
V Third team winners of the WPCA Re-serve FTwoDayLeagueTrophy and theDayChampionships Trophy. An accomplish-ment achieved two years in a row.
V Fourth team ended fourth in the thirddivision A League.
V Fifth team ended sixth in the third Divi-sion A League.
V Sixth team ended second in third Divi-sion D League. Promoted to third Division3C League.
V Women’s 1st Team - Ended 3rd in the 40over League and 3rd in the AMA 20 League
in the WPCA Women’s 1st Division.The success of the development pro-
grammes is largely due to the contributionsof passionate club members, parents and
coaches who volunteer their services andtime to develop the youth in the community.The club plans to expand the current de-
velopment programmes and activities and
invites the community and schools in thenorthern suburbs to get involved and sup-port the Durbanville Cricket Club initia-tives in preparing the youth for tomorrow.

Entries for one of Cape Town’s biggest andmost popular road running events, theOUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run, haveopened.
The event takes place on Sunday 13 Octo-ber andparticipants can choose to take partin the 21 km half marathon or 10 km run/walk and five km fun run/walk, which areaimed at families, younger participantsand beginners.
Last year the event attracted a recordfield of close to 15 500 participants, and raceorganiser Atlantic Athletic Club is expect-ing to host close to 18 000 this year.

Entries close on Sunday 29 Septemberand there is no limit to entries in each ofthe distances.
The Anna Foundation has been appoint-ed as the official beneficiary and all fundsraised will go towards their cause.
