Local towtruck companies were not swamped with acci- dents, despite testing atmospher- ic conditions. Almost the whole country was reeling after the bitterly cold weather with roads being snowed under and various serious vehi- cle accidents making the head- lines. On Friday Cape Town experi- enced a minimum temperature of 7.8 °C and on Sunday it rained 9.8 millimetres according to Weath- er SA. This weather might contribute to accidents, but it also keeps peo- ple wrapped up in their blankets and away from the roads. This bit of good news is almost as surprising as Milnerton Crime Watch’s (MCW) revelation that housebreakings tend to go up during cold and wet days. “People get lazy in inclement weather,” says Craig Pedersen of MCW. “They maybe don’t feel like closing the gate or the garage door because it’s too cold or they don’t see someone hiding in a bush. This contributes to house- breaking stats going up in the winter, along with the fact that the need of criminals is that much higher,” says Pedersen. W/O Daphne Dell, spokesper- son of Milnerton police could not confirm Pedersen’s statement that housebreakings are up, but she agrees that people tend to be less security-conscious in winter. She did, however, add that housebreakings for the Milner- ton Central area is down while those in the Royal Ascot area are up. Pedersen continues: “Typical- ly during the winter months we find that there is an increase in opportunistic crime which is spurred on by environmental conditions. Residents become a little lax in their approach to home security. Add to this the early and deep nightfall with nominal moonlight and you have the perfect operating conditions for opportunistic criminals.” Poor visibility is also the cause of many accidents in the dead of Winter. ER24’s spokesperson, André Visser, reminds drivers to al- ways be vigilant in foggy condi- tions. “It doesn’t matter if you have a technologically advanced vehi- cle, if the visibility is poor then it’s poor. Stepping on the breaks just a second later can result in one stopping many metres fur- ther,” he explains. The City of Cape Town’s driving licence testcentres are now accepting registered optom-etrist certificates.
It is nowpossible for residents applying forlearner and driver licence tests, includingcard renewals, to make use of their regis-tered optometrists for eye tests.
The initiative, which is supported by all lo-cal authorities, allows the applicants to have
their eyesight evaluated free of charge at theoptometrist.
The “purple form” as it is commonlyknown will be completed by the optometristand handed to the applicant.
Together with the application form, thispurple form will be accepted at the drivinglicence testing centre.
Any enquiries can be directed to the man-agement representative at any driving li-cence testing centre in the city.

Local traffic officers had an eventfulweekend following focused operations inMilnerton and Table View.
Traffic officers arrested 51 suspects andsuspended 21 illegally modified vehicles dur-ing operations that targeted drunk driversand general illegal driving.
On Saturday afternoon 15 July, officerssuspended 21 illegally modified vehicles dur-ing routine checks in Table View and Mil-nerton. During the course of the operation,a traffic officer was assaulted by a memberof the public while in the process of suspend-
ing the suspect’s vehicle.The officer’s colleagues quickly stepped in
and the suspect was arrested without inflict-ing any injury to the officer.
Another motorist tried to drive away froman officer who was attempting to stop himand a chase ensued. The suspect eventuallydrove into the kerb of the roadway just be-fore Du Noon and was arrested for recklessand negligent driving; he was also found tobe under the influence of alcohol.
Blaauwberg Road in Table View. One breath-alyser test registered 0,60 mg of alcohol per1 000ml of breath. In addition, officers issued32 traffic fines. In total the weekend sawclose to 1 000 offences ticketed.
On Koeberg Road, between PlattekloofRoad and Blaauwberg Road (direction southto north) 500 offences were recorded, also onKoeberg Road between Blaauwberg Roadand Plattekloof Road (north to south) 397 of-fences were noted.
A further 75 offences on the N7, betweenPlattekloof and Potsdam Road, were also re-corded.
Busy weekend for traffic cops

Various operations by provincial policehave resulted in the arrest of 10 suspects andthe seizure of six illegal firearms in just oneday.
Two of these suspects, a male and a female,were arrested in Milnerton last week Fridayafter police found a 9mm pistol in their pos-
session. The 38 and 28-year-old couple willappear in the Milnerton Magistrate’s Courtthis week.
Lt Col Andrè Traut, the provincial policespokesperson, adds: “Our approach to rootout violence in our province has also result-ed in the seizure of parts of a shotgun.”
On Friday police also arrested three sus-pects in Khayelitsha and Manenberg respec-tively, and one each in Grabouw, Muizen-berg, Elsies River, and Mfuleni.
“We will continue to disarm the criminals,because we cannot afford more violence anddeaths on our streets,” concludes Traut.
Six illegal guns confiscated in just one day
Onepersondiedandseveralwere injuredin taxi accidents over the last two weeks.
In the first, mechanical failure seems to beblamed after a taxi rolled on the N1 betweenSable and Koeberg roads last week Saturday.
The accident resulted in a middle agedman succumbing to his injuries. Accordingto ER24 spokesperson, Vanessa Jackson,many people were walking around the sceneof the accident when paramedics arrived.
“While ER24 paramedics were trying tosave the man’s life, three others were takento a nearby hospital by a department ofhealth provincial emergency medical servic-es ambulance, she explains.
There is currently no clarity on the exactnature of the mechanical failure, but policeare investigating the matter.
In the second accident, which happenedthis Saturday, three people sustained seri-ous injuries during a single vehicle collisionon the N7 highway near Bothasig.
WhenER24paramedics arrivedat the inci-dent, they found that a single vehicle hadveered out of control before overturning androlling through spiked fencing, coming to astandstill on its roof.
One of the three male occupants wastrapped in thevehicle and theother twowereejected as it overturned.
The patients had sustained various seri-
ous injuries ranging from suspected backand neck injuries, head injuries and brokenbones to various cuts and bruises.
Paramedics treated and stabilised the pa-tients at the scene before placing them on
spinal immobilisation equipment.According to another ER24 spokesperson,
André Visser, all of the patients were trans-ported to the New Somerset Hospital for fur-ther treatment.

Although the staff are blind and visuallyimpaired, they were well aware when Tyger-Burger’s reporters stepped into the room onThursday and the jubilation was electricwhen in their company.
Cane Quality Products is a registered com-pany that aims to provide work for peoplewho are either blind or have extremey im-paired eyesight.
The company specialises in making arti-cles like a variety of baskets including laun-dry and dog baskets, trays, trolleys, chairs,drawers and much more.
They work in light wicker, sea grass, sisal,kooboo cane, banana leaf and “flat flat”.
The business was opened in 2001 by a be-nevolent Rita Hattingh from Welgelegen
whose passion to help others led her to assistpeople who are blind or have poor eyesight.
The staff count include eight blind andpoorly-sighted people, two pensioners whoare responsible for creating the frames andthe staining of some of the products.
Hattingh has extended her helping hand tothose on the street.
Currently a young man who was living onthe street as well as his friend are also em-ployeed by Hattingh giving them a chance toescape from a life of poverty.
One would never say that most of the menare blind, watching their quick hand move-ments as they put together their creations.“I always wanted to make a difference andassist people who are blind or semi-blind andthat was when I decided to open the busi-ness,” Hattingh says.
“Since then working with these talentedpeople has been nothing but a joy. A year agoI met Glen who was living in Elsies River.His parents are both blind and a family mem-ber who was supposed to take care of him
was battling with a drug addiction and thatwas when I knew I needed to assist him.”
She says since theday the 19-year-old start-ed, there hasn’t been a moment of regret.
“He is so hard-working, always willing toassist. He came to me and said that he hada good friend who was also hard-workingand would appreciate a job, I trusted him andtoday they are both working with me andmore importantly they understand the blindand semi-blind men who are in the shop.”
She says there is never a dull momentwhen working with all her staff.
“The stories that are told here are hilari-ous. Everyone gets on well and even whenthe two young guys started they just fell inperfectly with the rest of the group. It’s notwork, its a day of fun all around.”
Glen Camphor says meeting Rita was life-changing. “She offered me this job when Iwas down and out.”

It took the iconic Nelson Mandela 67years to change South Africa.
When a grossly unfair regime eclipsedany glimmer of hope, Madiba persevered.
Then, when he finally achieved his pur-pose by ushering in a new beginning, he didsomething truly historic – he embraced theenemy.
The embodiment of a nation’s strugglewas transformed from one of revenge to un-expected conciliation.
This sacrifice was eventually recognisedby the United Nations in 2009 when it de-clared 18 July as Mandela Day.
On this day, people from all over theworld dedicate 67 minutes to fight povertyand promote peace.TygerBurger asked a few readers what
this day means to them and whether theyare willing to sacrifice 67 minutes of theiryear to alleviate the pain of others.
As always, the responses were varied. Insome instances it engendered hope and inothers it brought out strong feelings of con-tempt.
A disturbing and recurring theme, how-ever, was that few people actually knewwhat the day was all about.
Dalingyebo Magwa says he knows aboutMandela Day, but not why one should dedi-cate specifically 67 minutes of one’s time.Christopher October doesn’t have a clue,but after it is explained to him he admitsthat it is a great idea and that the worldwould indeed be a better place if everyonehelps each other for a change.
An anonymous woman says she has no ideawhy it’s Mandela Day. She also doesn’t caretoo much, because “Mandela is just anotherperson like you and me – we all live the sameand die the same”.
Mlamle Swartbooi is planning to spendtime with his family, but he has no idea whythe number 67 is significant. “People mustcare for others,” he continues with convic-tion.
Another anonymous woman brushes offthe special day when she says: “No! I’m notinterested in Mandela Day! I’m not interestedin this idea at all.”
Another says: “I’ve got two sons who Man-dela saidwill havea future and they can’t findjobs. I think Mandela did great for himself,but we are now experiencing just the re-verse.”
Pastor Enrico Fisher wrongly muses thatthe number 67 represents the number ofyears Mandela spent in prison.
However, the idea of the day doesn’t escapehim.
He quotes from the Bible when he says thatthe wicked shall be turned into hell.
“Here in South Africa, what we are seeingracism, the corruption, the evil that is hap-pening now is because we turned our back on-to God,” he concludes ominously.
Another person who unsurprisingly wantsto stay anonymous says: “I don’t know andI don’t f@$&ing care.”
Everyone has an opinion, but it is sad thata noble idea such as helping one anotherhasn’t taken hold on the masses.
His name and the meaning of Mandela Dayis sadly not yet embedded in the minds ofmost South Africans.
What ‘67 minutes’means to you
Dalingyebo Magwa says he will be workingon Mandela Day, but he will be doing something for the poorest of the poor. “I think it’sa good day. If everyone could do somethingthen the world will be a better place. If youcan’t give money or time, then you should give love to those who need love.”

When Brian Knipe is asked why Mandela Dayis celebrated today, he said: “It’s somethingto do with the children’s fund I think. I knowyou’re supposed to do something special forsomebody else, but I’m not sure why it’s 67minutes... We’re not going to do somethingspecific for Mandela Day, because every dayis Mandela Day.” He added that if every daywas like a Mandela Day then the world wouldbe a wonderful place to live in.

Jeffrey Manuel from Milnerton has re-cently been honoured by the BotanicalSociety of South Africa when he receiveda Fynbos Conservation Award for hisleadership in integrating biodiversity in-to land development.
In essence, Manuel’s efforts have had alasting impact in contributing towards theCAPE Strategic Objective of integrating bio-diversity into land use planning and envi-ronmental management.
This 31-year-old manager of land-use andenvironmental management at Sanbi is pas-sionate about biodiversity, but his forté is fa-cilitatingdialoguebetweendifferent govern-mental departments.
The laws governing the importance of bio-diversity in the country are adequate, but inorder for it to make a lasting impact all thedepartments must work together
He elaborates: “There are many stronglaws in the conservation sector. In post-apartheid South Africa we are focusing on
becoming a developmental state and our pri-mary form of development is constructionbased. The primary source of biodiversityloss is habitat loss. Historically we’ve beenreally poor in environmental performance,so the component I led was to integrate biodi-versity into this new management regimethat we are building. I focused on the West-ern Cape and on the appropriate manage-ment of fynbos.”
The CAPE programme is a multi-partner-ship programme and it’s goal is that by 2020the fynbos biome (the Cape floral kingdom)will be appropriately conserved and man-aged for the future.
This required a co-ordinated approach be-tween government, civil society and the pri-vate sector.
Manuel contributed to strengthening in-stitutional capacity, governance and com-munication for co-ordinated action.
This enabled a large number of civil socie-ty partners to come on board.
“Conservation isn’t just something thathappens on nature reserves. We need tochange that perception.”

“Funnily enough, I didn’t know what an on-cologist was. I only ever related cancerwith adults, never actually contemplatedthe fact that children can get cancer.”
About a year ago four-year-old Ashley keptcomplaining about an upset tummy. His stom-ach felt extremely hard, he lost his appetite andoccasionally had a fever, recalls his parents Bi-anca and Johnny Hayes. Their doctor referredthem to a paediatrician who took some X-rays.
He noticed something, but could not confirma diagnosis, so it was off to Louis Leipoldt hos-pital for sonar and a CT scan. “They just cameand said ‘there’s a growth, we’re going to sendthe oncologist to come and speak to you’.” Onlyafter Johnny googled it, it became all too real:oncology equals cancer.
Ashley had a cancerous growth on his rightkidney known as nephroblastoma or Wilms’tumour. Their world came shattering down.Even though the five year survival rate forWilms’ is about 90 percent, “you just wishedit wasn’t you”, says Bianca. “It felt like theytook my heart out, stamped on it and didn’t putit back again.”
They had to accept it and be strong for Ashleyand for his twin sister Kelly and older brotherAlex’s sake too.Twoweeks after diagnosisAsh-ley started with chemotherapy as the tumourwas too big to be removed via a nephrectomy(removal of the kidney). It took four weekly ses-sions of chemo to shrink it down from 14 to sev-en centimetres before they could operate.
Unfortunately the biopsy done after removal
showed that there were more high risk cells inhis body. Because it could grow back on otherorgans or spread via the lymph nodes, Ashleyhad to go through six more months of chemo.
Help for mom especially, but also for the restof the family, came in the form of Mandie Eras-mus from Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT).
LFCT, which is one of the beneficiaries forthis year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! con-cert, was started to support and assist childrendiagnosed with cancer and their families, asmany cannot cope with the day to day pres-
sures, financially or emotionally.TygerBurgeris the media sponsor of the concert.
“The support has been great. Mandie gave ushope, she phoned three or four times a week,still does. She’s just so upbeat; she just lifts upyour spirit.” Last November when Ashley wastoo ill to attend school, Mandie organised abirthday party for him and Kelly at home.
Ashley had his last chemo on 16 March andis due to have his first check-up soon.

Hy het glo petrolgeld gesoek om vir syvrou in die Paarl te gaan haal want sy wasdaar vir kankerbehandeling. Hy sou voorvier uur dieselfde dag die geld terugbring.
Hy woon in Hollandstraat 20, maar eken my man het gaan kyk en daar is geennommer 20 in Hollandstraat nie.

Parkeerplekke virgestremdes misbruikEk wil graag weet wat die mense dink watop die parkeerplekke vir gestremdes par-keer? Ons mense wat dit moet gebruik, moetop ’n ander plek gaan parkeer.
Ek dink die mense wat daar parkeer ge-bruik die staanplekke net omdat hulle lui isof nie weet wat die teken beteken nie.
Ek wonder of hulle eendag sal dink hoehulle die plekke misbruik het wanneer hullein dieselfde situasie as die gestremdes is. Ekweet nie of hulle nie kan lees nie, want daarstaan parkering net vir mense met die ges-tremde-teken en hullle wys die teken.
Die winkels wil nie betrokke raak nie, diekarwagte kyk weg en daar is niemand omons te help nie.
Dieverkeersafdelingmagniedaarhelpniewant dit is die winkel se parkeerplekke.
Ek wonder of die mense wat nie gestremdis nie se geld beter is, want daar is baie plekvir hulle en beperkte plek vir mense met ges-tremde-tekens. Ek wonder wat sal gebeur asdie mense elke keer ’n kaartjie sou kry enmoet betaal of hulle wiele word geklamp? Salhulle dan leer? As iemand net wil help kanons sonder stres ook winkel toe gaan of naander plekke waar daar gestremde-tekens is.Ek wil graag die Parow-mark gelukwens.Hulle het net ’n bokkie daar gesit en netmense met die kaart mag daar parkeer. The sixth annual Women’s ArtsFestival kicks off at ArtscapeTheatre on Wednesday 8 August.
The general theme of this year’sfestival is “Humanity”.
Highlighting hate rape and gen-der equality issues, Artscape’s Mar-lene le Roux dedicates the festivalto “every person who died just be-cause they dared to live as normalhuman beings”.
This year’s festival seeks to inter-rogate these issues through crea-tive expressions.
Speaking at the media launch, Le
Roux explained that the festivalwill be made up of different parts.
The first will be Eric Miller’s pho-tographic exhibition, The Nevergi-veups, which will open on theWednesday. The exhibition tells thestory of the women of Gapa (Grand-mothers against Poverty and Aids),a group of grandmothers fromKhayelitsha who are doing all intheir power to take control of theirown lives.
Another important part of the ex-hibition is the annual panel discus-sion. This year, representatives ofFree Gender, Gender Dynamics,Sweat, the Centre for Spiritualityand the Women’s Legal Centre will
come together on 9 August to dis-cuss the topic: “masculinity andsexual diversity in our society”.
The festival will also premier aproduction commissioned for theWomen’s Arts Festival, I stand cor-rected. Created by Moisola Adebayoand Mamela Nyamza, this theatreand dance collaboration is an artis-tic response to homophobic andtransphobic crimes.
Amongst all of this, there will beexhibitors, concerts andeven the ci-ty has got on board with a program-me of their own.

The doors then went on auction at Cavend-ish Square in Cape Town to raise funds to
protect elephants.The auction was hosted by South Africa’s
best loved Big Brother winner, FerdinandRabie and Ishmail Hendricks, contestant onThe Apprentice.
“We decided to paint and auction doors asthey can be installed as a permanent remind-er of our need to remember and save ele-phants from the ivory trade,” said Lisa Cant-Haylett, of IFAW Southern Africa.
E-is-for-Elephants is a project of IFAW’sworldwide Animal Action programme to in-form children about animals, their habitatsand their role in the world.

Afrikaanse kunstenaar An-ton le Roux het onlangs sy al-bum, Eenrigtingpad, by Jam-rock bekendgestel.
Die eerste liedjie van die al-bum, “Jy is”, is verlede jaar vry-gestel en het baie vinnig die ge-wildheidsleer op die plaaslikeradiostasies geklim en was ooknommer een op Radio Weskus.
Dié liedjie word tot op radio-stasies in Madeira gespeel.
“My eie liedjies is ballades,”sê Anton. “Ek wil hê dit moet ’nrockballade-effek hê,” verduide-lik hy.
Anton beskryf homself as ’npassievolle sanger, liedjieskry-wer en komponis. “Ek kom uit’n musikale familie,” sê Anton.
Hy sê dit was altyd sy droomom musiek te maak, maar hy hetdit nooit te ernstig opgeneemnie. Die geleenthede wat hy nouhet, het hy ook nie destyds ge-had nie.
Dit het verander toe hy sesjaar gelede by die Branderfeesopgetree het. “Ek het daar besefek gaan my droom nou volg,” sê

“Our projects in Richwood, Kraai-fontein, Vissershok and the other sur-rounding areas of Durbanville as wellas a number of families who are expe-riencing hard times as a result of thedepression, are also still ongoing andwill be for some time yet,” Young said.
“We would therefore like to appealonce again to all kind souls in the com-munity not to throw out their unwant-ed goods, but to contact us to come andcollect it,” she said.

A local off-road racer is edging ever clos-er to the top spot after giving anothersterling performance at the Junior Na-tional Off-Road Quad Championshipsthis weekend.
Tyrone Renwick (13) from Melkbosstrandnotched up a third win at the Bell Junior Na-tionals which were held outside Hluhluwe inKwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
The event was the fourth round of the 2012Junior National Off-road Championship.
Although the event was cut short after aveld fire started half way during the motor-cycle racing, the quad racers all managed tofinish their heats for the day. These resultswill thus count towards the overall points.
Both the junior and senior classes in thequad category took place during the morn-ing with most of the entrants travelling fromthe Western Cape.
The top two positions in the Junior OpenQuad Class for young competitors betweenthe ages of 10 and 15 years, were filled by rid-ers from the Western Cape.
Renwick riding on a Yamaha claimed histhird victory of the season finishing justover nine minutes ahead of Eathan vanRensburg also on a Yamaha.
The young lady from Richard’s Bay, JadeSchutte (Perry Yamaha) was third and willkeep her lead in the class although Renwick,currently in second place due to not finish-ing in the Montagu event earlier this year,
is now a mere six points behind her.The standings can, however, change to-
wards the end of the season as competitorswill have to drop the points of one event withthe points of only six of the seven racescounting towards the championship titles.
The fifth round of the 2012 Junior NationalChampionship, the Junior Diamond Route,is a new event on the national calendar andwill take place on 11 August outside Wolma-ransstad in the North-West Province.
. The cause of the fire, fuelled by a strongwind and extremely dry conditions, is stillunknown, but it seems highly unlikely thatit was racing related. No-one was injuredand except for damages to the property, nodamage to vehicles or race equipment wasreported. The organisers, Zululand Motor-sport SA (ZMSA), were praised for theirevacuation plan and quick response.
