This latest incident saw three people being arrested, that included two sisters. The City has stated that these kind of ar- rests have more than quadrupled in recent years. Milnerton sector police spokesperson, Warrant-officer Daphne O’Reilly has admit- ted that, similar to other areas, drugs are a big problem in Table View and Milnerton. Table View police commander, Col Dirk Vosloo, agrees when he says that drug abuse is a growing concern. “My deduction is made according to the fact that most suspects arrested were in pos- session of small quantities, which suggests that they may be users,” he says. The chairperson of the Table View com- munity police forum, Andrew Brace, argues that there will always be drug dealers as long as there is a demand from users. The demand for mandrax, a drug used mainly by lower income groups, has led to suspected drug dealers occupying flats in the affluent West Beach suburb. Some good detective work by the Crime In- telligence Division and the Hawks led to the West Beach arrest last week Wednesday. Provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col An- drè Traut, elaborates: “A crime intelligence- driven operation resulted in the arrest of three suspects for being in possession of 70 000 mandrax tablets as well as a substan- tial amount of cash to the tune of R700 000 – possibly generated by means of their drug trade. The mandrax tablets are estimated to have a street value of R2.8 million.” The majority of the drugs were found hid- den in a ceiling in the flat in Radar Road. The two sisters, aged 50 and 31, are due to make a court appearance in Cape Town once they have been charged. Provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Arno Lamoer said he is pleased with the outcome of the operation and congratulated the officers concerned for their efforts. Last month the City revealed that after making 1000 drug-realted arrests, around 28 000 units of mandrax, tik and marijuana have been confiscated since January. Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says: “That is an im- pressive improvement over the 380 a year we used to get. We’re about six or seven times more efficient on my watch. While we ag- gressively tackle supply on the one side, we’re doing about five times more arrests than any other city in South Africa.” Brace also sent out a warning to the public that a “flesh-eating drug”, originally from Russia and slowly spreading through the world, might already have hit the shores of South Africa. This cheap heroin substitute is commonly referred to as “krokodil”. This heinous drug causes sores, tissue damage and a rough, scale-like appearance on the skin. According to reports the acidity of the che- micals causes the body’s fat and skin to “burn off and die”. O’Reilly concludes sternly: “The police will continue a zero tolerance towards any form of drug-dealing and drug abuse.” An unexpected surprise waited for Parklands resident, Mariaan Vorster, when she went to Rietvlei Nature Reserve recently. W hen the Dunoon parents of aneight-year-old boy reported theirson as missing to Milnerton police,

their world collapsed when they heard thenews. They had been aware of a pedestrianaccident on theN7 the afternoon before, buthad had no idea the victim was their son.

The boy was apparently trying to crossthe busy road at about 16:00 when a truckdrove over him. He was treated by ER24 pa-ramedics and rushed to Red Cross Child-ren’s Hospital, where he succumbed to hisinjuries.

According to local police spokesperson,W/O Daphne O’Reilly, no-one on the scenecould identify the boy, so the parents couldnot be informed of his death.

Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesperson, says one of their paramedics was on herway to assist a man who had fallen througha roof in Killarney Gardens.

Reflected in her rearviw mirror, she sawthe boy being hit by the truck as he crossed

the N7 outbound road.Vermaak says that she immediately stop-

ped and reversed to render assistance. She immediately called for backupandan

ambulance.“Upon assessment she found that he was

barely breathing and showed very weak vi-tal signs. While paramedics were trying tostabilise the boy, his condition rapidly dete-riorated and he went into cardiac arrest. The paramedics initiated CPR and mana-ged to regain a pulse a few minutes later. The boywas rushed off to hospital in a criti-cal condition,” he said.

Hospital communications officer, Angeli-que Jordaan confirmed that the boy passedaway shortly after being admitted.

O’Reilly continues: “It is not uncommonfor young children to play along the N7.

There aremany gaps in the walls and fen-ces between Dunoon and the N7.”

But this is no excuse for a hit-and-run col-lision.

“Parents must tell their children aboutthe dangers of such a road and should at alltimes know where their young ones are,”

she says, before adding that thankfully suchtragic accidents happen only occasionally.

The parents of the boy went to the policestation the following day. After hearing thenews theywere taken to thehospital andpo-sitively identified the boy.

O’Reilly says there were quite a few peo-ple whowitnessed the accident and that thedriver of the truck was driving within thespeed limit.

“As with all incidents of this nature, a ca-se of culpable homicide is being investiga-ted against the driver,” she says.

A regular commuter along the road whowishes to remain anonymous ventured anopinion: “Almost every day someone triesto run over the N7 next to Dunoon. Someti-mes it happens at dawn and it’s almost ami-racle to avoid the fuzzy shape crossing theroad.

“Something must be done, whether it’s araised pedestrian crossing or better wallsseperating the township and the road. Thisis definitely not the last time a pedestrianwill be killed on the N7 next to Dunoon. I’msurprised it doesn’t happen more often.”

A green technology hub is on the cards forthe people of Atlantis. The City of CapeTown’s specialised land disposal manage-ment systemwas recently showcased in thearea. This system, which includes a rapid ap-

plication and adjudication process whenselling or leasing City-owned property, wasapproved by Council at the end of 2012. Asa result, the 68 ha-plan for a green technolo-gy hub in Atlantis has been initiated. Lastweek Tuesday executive deputymayor, IanNeilson, and Gestamp Renewable Indus-tries (GRI) signed a ceremonial land pur-chase agreement. TheCity sold 7.8 ha of thissite to Red Planet Horizon Trading, ownedbyGestampWindSteel SouthAfrica, toma-nufacture wind towers. The sales agree-ment was reached on 10 March this year.

GRIWind Steel South Africa plans to generatemore than 200 jobs – of which 150 to 180 em-ployees will be from Atlantis and surroun-ding areas.“We are calling on our partnersin the green technology sector to considerinvesting in Atlantis so that we can makeprogress possible together,”says Nielson.“The City foresees that this 68 ha-propertywill be transformed into a green technologymanufacturing cluster. A development fa-cilitation team has been established to fast-track investments and to assist potential in-vestors. In Atlantis, one out of two peopleare unemployed. Upon hearing the word “mixology,”the image of Getafix the druid, met-hodically adding ingredients to his

cauldron, immediately pops into one’shead.Just like the beloved Asterix character

is famous forhismagicpotion,BrentPerre-more is famous for his cocktails to add anextraordinary zing in your step.He recently wowed the judges in a natio-

nalmixology contest andwill nowhave thechance to represent South Africa in Scot-land for the finals. TheDiageo Reserve bar-tender competition is widely regarded asthe biggest mixologists’ competition in theworld.Brent’s mother and Phoenix resident,

Esther Perremore, is as proud as a parentcould be: “An ordinary barman job has be-come an art form. Children should learnthat even if they are a street sweeper thenthey should be the best street sweeper theycan be!”Brent currently works as cocktail maes-

tro at the Orphanage Cocktail Emporiumin the City Bowl. This will be the secondtime he represents his country, the first be-ing in Rio de Janeiro in 2012.“I like trying new cocktails all the time,”

says Brent. “Sometimes the ideas come tome in the strangest of times. In 2012 I drea-med about a cocktail that won the nationalfinals! It was a really strange concoctionwith gin, dry vermouth, a red onion andthyme colis, and a bacon cream foam ontop, served with crispy bacon.”The drink that will now see him mixing

it up with men in kilts is called the Gift ofPersia (smoked in a decanter, served in achilled glass, and consisting of Ron Zacapa, dry Vermouth, date syrup, naartjie andcardamom). What sets Brent apart from his peers is

his food technology experience, since infu-sing food or fruit into cocktails is just asimportant as the drink itself. “People cancall me a mixologist, but I prefer the termcraft bartender, because it is an age-oldcraft that is gainingpopularity oncemore.”Even though Brent likes experimenting

with new flavours, his “old favourite” is aNegroni- an Italian cocktail invented in theearly twentieth century inFlorence. It’s ba-sically sweet red vermouth, Campari andgin served on the rockswith a twist of oran-ge.His least favourite is the “nothing-more-

than-a-slush-puppy” strawberry daiquiri. When asked what advice he has for yo-

ungsters who dream of becoming craft bar-tenders, he says: “Iwork four 15 hour shiftsa week, so it is not an easy job! There area lot of rewards though. It is a viable careeroption. People look at bartending as just aninterim job, but no-one really thought itcould be an actual career. A wonderful ca-reer!”

The Parklands Neighbourhood Watch(PNW) saga is nearing its conclusion af-ter Table View station commander, Col

Dirk Vosloo pledged his support. In a letter addressed to PNW’s BjornHarri-

son Sagar, Vosloo wrote: “Based on corres-pondence from the Department of Communi-ty Safety, I have decided to embark on a wor-king relationship with the PNW as anorganisation and structure in the fightagainst crime in the Table View precinct.“I have enjoyed a good working relations-

hip with the Table View NeighbourhoodWatch (TVNW) in the past and hope that thisone can be the same.“There should be no competition between

TNHW and PNW. We all have one aim inmind and that is to make Table View a betterand safer place.”

Burying the hatchetSagar responded: “Weare pleased to be offi-

cially recognised by Table View police andhope to assist wherever possible and partici-pate fully as a watch in all aspects.”Vosloo reckons that, in the case of com-

plaints against the conduct ofPNWmembers,Sagar should investigate and take necessaryaction to stop any recurrences.Vosloo also asked for a full data base of all

the names and addresses of registered mem-bers; a full data base of street committees; co-pies of security clearances and informationon how many members have radios at theirdisposal.

Clearing the airwaysRegarding the use of radios the other good

news that Sagar was pleased to announcewas that the PNW’s radio frequency hasbeen approved by the Independent Commu-nications Authority of South Africa.

“These are all very positive moves in thethe continuing growth of PNW,” Sagar addedconfidently.Meanwhile, PNW members recently hel-

ped recover the stolen vehicle of a TVNWmember, according to Sagar.

“The vehicle was reported stolen at theCheckers branch on SandownRoad and reco-vered by us a week later. It was spotted par-ked in a parking lot by an alert member onpatrol.“This shows what can come from commu-

nity cooperation and team work.”

As my onderneming grootgenoeg was, het ek haar “ge-steel” en Kaap toe gebring.

SMSV It was shocking to see you turn the tragic death of an innocent child into a pleafor a library (TB, 25 June). The lack of alibrary did not kill that child, the great Capetonian pastime of jaywalking did.Rather call for better education on how tocross roads. Fine all parents who teachtheir children to run across the roads, which you see them do daily. Put up morespeed cameras for the escalating amountof speeding drivers. - Anoniem

V My work involves driving, so I listen tothe radio often. There are many topics onraising money for the poor, but not aboutcontraception. I am in the medical fieldand have noticed that welloff peoplehave children according to what they canafford. I am tired of the expectation offree health, schooling and housing. V It’s a disgrace how the system fails vulnerable kids by turning them into vulnerable adults (Xoliswa Hendricks, TB, 2June). These children are also orphanedand abandoned by a system which is supposed to protect and uplift them, butwhich sets them up for failure. COBIE VAN OORT

A wet and rainy winter’s day in the Wine-lands was no deterrent at all for a group ofintrepid journos eager to taste their waythrough the area’s best wines. The group ac-cepted the challenge as a shorter version ofwhat the 50 participating teams can expectat this year’s Amazing Wine Race, to takeplace on Saturday 9 August.Starting off at Koelenhof Wine Cellar with

coffee andbubbly, the second stopwasworld-famousBeyerskloof for a tasting andvarietalidentification task, which already challen-ged some of palates! TygerBurger reporterDesirée Rorke literally had her tongue fum-bling around the three red wine cultivars.“It’s not so easy to distinguish between agood Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, espe-cially if you love both and have only 30 se-conds to do so!” she said. They also had therare delight of tasting Beyerskloof Diesel Pi-notage 2011, a highly sought-after vintagethat was sold out “save for one last bottle Un-cle Beyers had left in his private collection. He opened it with love and we, in the sametoken enjoyed itwithmuch love and appreci-ation,” Rorke describes with pleasure.Anura Vineyards spun their visit around

their ‘froggy’ theme and the wines werehighly rated by the expert tasters. “Apartfrom the fabulously beautiful variety of wi-nes we tasted here, I was also blown awaywith the outstanding cheeses available onthe farm, pairedwith thewines,” saysRorke.“I simply could not leave without stockingup.”Great Chardonnay, scrumptious snacks

and a daunting cork-counting at GlenCarlouEstate beautifully rounded off the action-

packed outing. “The viewsfrom the tasting room and di-ning room at this estate werebreathtaking - I was mesmeri-sed,” says Rorke. “The beautyof the Boland is timeless...”“Between the three of us in

our team, we over-countedwith 300. How was that possi-ble I thought afterward? Pos-sibly too much of a goodthing? Never!”

Pets with a storyAt Glen Carlou, the teams

also met up with local charityorganisation, Pets as Thera-py, who will be the beneficia-ries of this year’s race. Chair-man Dr Marieanna le Roux ofStellenbosch University, accompanied byone of their therapy dogs Juno, explained thework the organisation does. “Our dogs areused in various therapeutic activities suchas aiding children with reading where thechildren will read the story to the therapydog,” she said.Le Roux who wrote her doctoral thesis on

the influence the presence of pets have onchildren, said reading to the dog created asafe environment for the child with readingproblems. “Research has proven that an ani-mal can reduce anxiety levels in humans,”she said.A leisurely lunch and wine tasting at Eag-

levlei Estate ended off the day, with all theteams being given wine prizes to take home.“The hospitality we received at the folk at

Eaglevlei was a fitting finish to a delightfulday. Our team, consisting of TygerBurger,

Wine Times and Spit or Swal-low, came in second in a tightrace and were thrilled withthe wine we won. It was byfar themost fun I have had ina long time and, if this wasonly a sneak preview of the‘real thing’ coming up in Au-gust, I highly recommend itfor any spirited wine lover,”says Rorke.Responsible drinking and

driving was promoted by theuse of a bus used by the te-ams, kindly sponsored byGoodfellas.

Amazing wine, amazingprizesThe annual Amazing Wine

Race takes place on 25 wineries around Stel-lenbosch and Paarl and pits the skills of te-ams of four against a range of wacky tasksdreamed up by the participating wineries. The timed tasks include wine pairings,

identifying certain wine varietals, a cellartreasure hunt andboules, to namea few. Theentry fee is R1800 per team of four, which in-cludesmorning coffee and a briefing session, the team kits, all the tastings and entertain-ment for the day, the prizes and the prize-gi-ving dinner. A percentage of the profits rai-sed will be donated to the local charity orga-nisation, Pets as Therapy. More informationabout the good work they do can be accessedat www.pat.org.za.V Teams can book their places by contacting Björnvan Oort at [email protected] or 021 9810216 during office hours. “We are all very excited with the win, butI have to say it has been a stressful twodays,” said WP manager, Frikkie Coetzer.“Our game against the Golden Lions wasperhaps the hardest game of the tournamentas they are physically strong and came at uswith no mercy. But we managed to beatthem. Today’s game was perhaps not asphysically challenging, but the Blue Bulls

play a good tactical game. We had to changeour game plan to introduce a combinationof both strength and tactics, which workedin our favour in the end.”

This win means that WP has completed aCoca-Cola Youth Rugby Week treble follo-wing the WP u-13’s successfully defendingtheir u-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week title lastweek. The u-18 Coca-Cola Academy Week isdrawing to a close in Worcester this week.

It looked like the Blue Bulls were comingback into the game when WP conceded a pen-alty which Ruan De Swardt slotted to bringProvince’s lead down to 8 points.

But WP was tight on defense and counte-red well off the Blue Bulls’ kicks. Lombardand the Western Province backline wereslick and fluid in their play and they con-

stantly kept the ball in their possession, making it difficult for the Bulls to attack. The Western Province 8th man delivered

a try for his team in the 37th minute, therebyextending his team’s lead to 15 points, follo-wed by Lombard’s conversion.

Western Province continued to press onrelentlessly and were awarded with a try asJade Fortune dotted down.

Magnificent form displayed by Fran-cis Carthers and Bellville driverGunter Drotschie in the Sports and

GT and the Fine Car categories, was thehighlight of Saturday’s fifth round of theWingfield Motors Power Series at Killarney.

Carruthers performed beautifully, as hisJuno SS3 swiftly dealt with a Porsche thathad been strengthened by top Gautenger An-drew Culbert and Durban’s Sun Moodley, who is also the Big Foot Express category’ssponsor. Blaauwberg’s Craig Jarvis andMoodley finished second and third in thefirst race, with Jarvis (again), and Culbertfilling the second positions.

Despite not setting the quickest qualifyingtime, Drotshie was also in a destructivemood in the Charl Electrical Eng. Fine Carevents. His bulky Chev Commodore GS fi-nished well ahead of Eric van der Merwe(Porsche 944 turbo) and Jaco Lambert (VWFox) in the first race, with a Porsche powe-red Lourens Bester and Van der Merwe fil-ling these positions in the second.

The Mutlu Battery Classic Car categoryprovided a platform for another double vic-tory, this time for veteran Richard Quixley. But the Datsun 240Z driver was overshado-wed by Trevor Momberg’s V6 Ford Capri inboth races, with Vance Kearney (Ford CapriPerana) taking third in the first race.

The second Classic shootout was red flag-ged when Johan Swart’s VW Scirocco cras-

hed into the barrier wall at the exit of theEngen corner. Luckily, with the results jud-ged from their positions on the final comple-ted lap, Swart was awarded third place.Overall class victories went to Dave Alha-deff (B: Alfa), Herman de Kock (C: Ford Es-cort), and Jan-Willem de la Port (D: Chev Ca-nAm).

The quality of Masters V8 events easilycompensated for their lack of quantity asCraig Jarvis and Franco Donadio fought itout in the last two events. After sharing firstand second places, they were followed acrossthe line by Richard Schreuder in the firstand Paolo Cavalieri in the second.

The Makita Supercar events were possi-bly even closer, as Steve McCarthy was nomore than a hair’s breadth ahead of Nick Ad-

cock when the flag came out at the endof their first race. They switched positions

in the final, with Adcock having just enoughof an advantage to clinch the overall verdict.

The third places were claimed by Brad Wa-deley and Gareth Easom, who was also ad-judged the overall winner of the Silver class, despite starting from the back of the grid af-ter missing the qualifying sessions. TheBronze class went to Carl Nel.

Sean le Riche’s 1.7 litre Formula Renaultwas unchallenged in the single seater For-mula Libre events. He was followed by theB and C class winners, Rassie Erasmus (For-mula Ford Ray) and Stephen Schemel (For-mula Vee Rhema), in both races.

The sixth round of the Power Series is dueto be held at Killarney on August 9.
