By reproducing this letterform by hand at a very enlarged size, the idiosyncrasies Century Schoolbook Regular’s lowercase g became more apparent. This gave insight to anat-omy and relations with other letters and typefaces.

This composition of the abstract-ed letterforms of Myriad Pro bring certain aspects of type anatomy into focus. The arrangement is con-scious of the letterforms’ interaction with each other and their overall color within the composition.

In making this, I really wanted to embody what apple pie feels like and refer to its associations: Thanksgiving, family, warmth, etc. I did this using warm colors and multiple units of the same style to create a rich closeness and depth.

Celebrated designer, Herbert Lubalin, American born

March 17, 1918 dies at 63 years old on May 24, 1981. After

graduating from Cooper Union in 1939 he was entranced

by typography. Lubalin worked for Reiss Advertising,

Sudler & Hennessy, and his own firm, Herb Lubalin, Inc.,

amung others. Lubalin collaborated with Ralph Ginzburg

and others on the magazines Eros, Fact, and Avant Garde.

Lubalin was elected to New York Art Directors Club Hall of

Fame in 1977 and awarded the 62nd AIGA medal in 1981.

He was also awarded the TDC Medal, the award from the

Type Directors Club in 1984. As a typographic designer,

Lubalin is responsible for ITC Avant Garde in 1970 (a

collaboration with Tom Carnase), ITC Ronda in 1970,

ITC Lubalin Graph in 1974, and ITC Serif Gothic in

1974 (a collaboration with Antonio DiSpigna).

Designed by Swiss font artist Adrian Frutigerand released in 1988, the Avenir typeface contained

three weights, each with a roman and oblique version. Later, the family was expanded to six weights, each with a romanand oblique version. The family is made up of gradual weight

that

range from headlines to captions. Avenir’s design is based off of

the sansserif typefaces Futura and Univers. The name Avenir means future and gives us

a clue as to what Frutiger’s intentions were, to convey the idea of timelessness in the

image of his typeface.
