Ubuntu Unity System Change Proposal Trung Nguyen #14853167

Introduction

Unity was initially designed to make more efficient use of space given the limited screen size of Ubuntu system on netbooks, including, for example, a vertical application switcher called the launcher.

Current System State

Problem Description

Unity Dashboard Unity Dash serves as a “Start menu” for Ubuntu OS. It looks unorganized and messy for first-time user to try Linux desktop.

Affects It’s confusing, unintuitive and slow to use.

Result Users find it’s hard to organize their system.

Solution Fix the Unity Dash, organize the system to look more intuitive and make the Ubuntu OS a pleasure to use and work with for everyone.

Problem Statement• The Unity Dash Application

M e n u d o e s n o t s h o w a c o m p l e t e f u l l l i s t o f app l icat ions and ne i ther o rgan izes them by the i r categories so making it harder to look for and know what kind of application available on the system.

• Unorganized Menu

Automatic integrated commercial search (Amazon) inside the Ubuntu operating system without any user’s intension requires more CPU’s work and slows down the system.

Proposed Approach

Objective of this technical proposal is to make the current Ubuntu OS more organized, more refinement with an intuitive user interface and faster response system. More organized user interface, simplify, speed up and strengthen the Ubuntu desktop environment.

• Organized

• Speed

• Functionality

Implementation Design

• Speed up time for looking and starting an application by creating more organized Unity Dashboard, divided applications base on their functions. Example:

System Menu Bar

• D i s a b l e t h e i n t e g r a t e d commercial search (Amazon) to save ene rgy and reduce unnecessary CPU’s work for the system. Become more power efficient.

• Strengthen the current user interface with more functions available first-hand without the need to be tweaked. Example: “multi-workspace desktop” mode to keep more applications open at the same time with easy switch between them.

Thank You!
