SON LUX is led by Ryan Lott. After his first record, At War With Walls and Mazes, NPR’s All Songs Considered

declared him "Best New Artist" of 2008. Son Lux has released two EPs and two LPs since, including 2011's We

At just 22 years old, Daymé - a singer, arranger composer, and choir director is already a veteran presence in Cuban music, and is fast gaining nternatio

profile. She says she has sang all her life and recalls her four-year old self performing on every block in her neighborhood. ‘Fun stuff,’ she says, ‘Weari

crazy dresses and singing like a rumbera (Rumberas are the street parties in Cuba where you hear exploding Afro-Cuban rhythms and chants – sometim

in Yoruba). She has been performing semi-professionally since the age of 8, and became lead singer with the big band Los Primos at 14. She has

performed with Winton Marsalis, and was invited by the Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnet to perform in Canada.

Recorded in just a few days in London and Havana, Daymé’s debut album is a work of elegant maturity, showcasing Daymé’s mix of influences. Her background as a choir director is in evidence on the wonderful layered vocals on tracks like Nueva Era, Niño and Madres. Madres also alludes to theSanteria chanting that have formed part of Daymé's worship since childhood. Known as "Mr. Swing", Red Norvo was an unusual figure in early jazz, being an exponent of the xylophone and marimba (and laterthe vibraphone), which were not regular features in jazzensembles of the time, but he went on to become an importantpersonality in the genre whose work retained relevance into thepost-war bebop and cool school era. This excellent-value 40-

track collection, which includes a number of recordings ofextended length, encompasses a period of close to four decadesfrom some of his first recordings in the early '30s through to ahiatus in his recording career in the early '60s. It includes work inboth small and large ensembles, with a small selection ofrecordings featuring his wife, the singer Mildred Bailey, from thelate '30s, and it is a fine showcase for his flowing improvisationsin all those contexts.

The quality of the recordings is underlined by the remarkable roll-call of top names with whom he recorded over the years fromswing legends like Jimmy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Charlie Barnetand Harry James through to bebop stars like Dizzy Gillespie andCharlie Parker, and the collection includes some tracks by hishighly noted trio of the '50s with Charlie Mingus and Tal Farlow.

It is a very entertaining tribute to an artist who has not receivedthe attention he merits.

Conrad Yeatis "Sonny" Clark (July 21, 1931 - January 13, 1963)was among the very finest jazz pianists working in the hard bopidiom. Born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania, a coal miningtown east of Pittsburgh, Sonny was the youngest of eightchildren. When visiting an aunt in California aged 20, Clark

decided to stay and began working with saxophonist WardellGray. He then went to San Francisco with Oscar Pettiford andafter a couple months, was working with clarinetist BuddyDeFranco in 1953. Clark toured the USA and Europe withDeFranco until January 1956, when he joined The Lighthouse

All-Stars, led by bassist Howard Rumsey. Wishing to return tothe east coast, Clark served as accompanist for singer DinahWashington in February 1957 in order to relocate to New YorkCity. In New York, Clark was often requested as a sideman bymany musicians, partly because of his rhythmic comping.

He frequently recorded for Blue Note Records, serving as asideman for many hard bop players, including Kenny Burrell,Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, ArtFarmer, Curtis Fuller, Grant Green, Philly Joe Jones, Clifford

Jordan, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, Art Taylor and WilburWare. He also recorded sessions with Charles Mingus, SonnyRollins, Billie Holiday, Stanley Turrentine, and Lee Morgan.

John Haley "Zoot" Sims (October 29, 1925 - March 23, 1985)was an American jazz saxophonist, playing mainly tenor andsoprano. He was born in Inglewood, California, the son ofvaudeville performers Kate Haley and John Sims, and grew ua performing family. Sims learned to play both drums and clarat an early age. Following in the footsteps of Lester Young, S

developed into an innovative tenor saxophonist. Throughout hcareer he played with big bands, starting with those of KennyBaker and Bobby Sherwood following him dropping out of higschool after one year. He played with Benny Goodman's band1943 and replaced his idol Ben Webster in Sid Catlett's Quartin 1944. Sims served 1944-1946 as a corporal in the UnitedStates Army Air Forces, then moved on to such renowned baas those of Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich. Sims walso one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers", and he was knoamong his peers as one of the strongest swingers in the fieldfrequently led his own combos and sometimes toured with hisfriend Gerry Mulligan's sextet. Later he toured with Mulligan'sConcert Jazz Band. Sims rejoined Goodman in 1962 for a touthe Soviet Union. In the 1950s and '60s Sims had a long,successful partnership as co-leader of a quintet with Al Cohnwhich recorded under the name "Al and Zoot" and was afavourite at New York City's Half Note Club. Zoot also liked toplay alto and late in his career added the soprano saxophonehis performances while recording a series of albums for PabloRecords, label of impresario Norman Granz.
