Santiago de Compostela is a small university town in north-western Spain, 35 km off the Atlantic coast. It is right in the green heart of Spain.

Santiago is internationally known as the destination of the Way of Saint James. The Way of Saint James (or route of Santiago) is a cultural, humane, religious and touristic route, whose origins go back more than one millennium ago, and every year it attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world. They travel hundreds of kilometres through north-western Spain, on foot or by bike, from France or Portugal, turning Santiago into a cosmopolitan city.

This is why Santiago de Compostela has always been the cultural and spiritual capital city of the Northwest, matching the other big capital cities in Central and Eastern Spain. It is an open, welcoming city, green (with 2.2 km2 of parks) and sustainable, whose old town is listed by the UNESCO as a world heritage site; and it boasts one of the highest levels of public safety in Europe.

The University of Santiago, founded back in 1495 – and, therefore, one of the oldest in the world – is one of the most important universities in Spain. As compared to other Spanish universities, it features an added advantage, for it is located in a small city that grew both around it and around the Way. It is a city where everything is within walking distance. And, surely enough, it is the Spanish city with the best university life, with an extensive cultural offer and a great variety of day and night entertainment venues.

reasonsto choose the

University of Santiago de Compostela

Reason 1: It is one of the best universities in Spain, from all points of view (according to all rankings) Reason 2:

It has an international character and attracts foreign students and researchers (3,000 every year)

Reason 4: It offers a wide range of first-rate bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as PhD programmes.

Reason 3: It is a comprehensive university that stands out in the areas of Health Sciences (Campus of International Excellence), Humanities, Nature Sciences, Social Sciences and Engineering

Reason 5: It features modern scientific facilities in all fields of study that make it possible to offer excellent research training

Reason 7: It features high quality of life and a high level of public security: Santiago is one of the cities with the lowest crime rates in Europe

Reason 10: It is the only university in the world to be part of three UNESCO’s world heritage sites: the city of Santiago, the Roman Walls of Lugo and the Way of Saint James

Reason 6: It is a UniverCity model: A university town with an integrated campus. Every corner of the city and all university premises can be reached in less than 15 minutes, as everything is within walking distance

Reason 9: In spite of being at the far end of Europe, it is well-connected with the rest of the world (international airport and high-speed train)

Reason 8: It offers multiple services to the university community and promotes research: 2nd Spanish university in terms of library seats per student, 4th in terms of rooms at the Halls of Residence, sports premises, cultural premises…

Reason 11: In Santiago you will learn Spanish language and culture in one of the best schools in Spain, following a full-immersion programme. Besides, in Santiago you may also learn Galician, a language that resembles Portuguese that will give you access to Portuguese-speaking countries

And if you come from a country in which neither Spanish nor Portuguese are spoken, here is one more reason for you to come:
