Roots of Isolationism

Many immigrants came to the U.S. to escape European conflicts.

George Washington warned against foreign entanglements.

Thomas Paine warned that the vast number of European kingdoms threatened lasting peace .

The physical isolation (distance from Europe) contributed to psychological isolationism .

Monroe Doctrine 1823

“Hemispheric Mentality” - arrogance; Americans better than European

Stated that the U.S. would not interfere with European affairs that did not concern them and warned Europe not to colonize the American continents.(Considered it dangerous to peace and safety of America.)
