Regenerative Skid Resistance of Steel Slag Aggregate

Why does slag maintain its skid resistance throughout its life?

Study at University of Ulster

Tested all basic properties + whether any change or recovery of skid

resistance occurred due to the affects of environmental conditions such as

rainfall

Created different regimes to assess the performance of the slag

Several different types of iron and steel slags used in study

Pronounced increase due to repeated effect of long term soaking

5 of the slags recover to between 20% and 30% above standard PSV

Stainless AOD showed a drastic recovery of around 70% above standard

Regime 3

3 hours of offset polishing

15 cycles of wetting and drying over a 3 day period

Each cycle lasted 3 – 4 hours and consisted of wetting each mould and

allowing to dry naturally at room temperature

Wet skid resistance checked using pendulum after 15 cycles

Soaked in water for a further 3 months

Allowed to dry for a further 2 months and pendulum tested

Following 3 hours extreme offset polishing

After just 15 cycles of wet/dry cycle (3 days) the skid resistance had

recovered to between 68% and 87% of the standard PSV

After extended soaking and drying (153 days) average recovery rate was

97% of standard PSV

Case Study : Van Reenen’s Pass - South Africa

Challenge:

Due to heavy traffic and

steep gradients, Van

Reenen’s Pass on the N3 in

South Africa was

experiencing premature road

surface deterioration

Solution:

Based on its UK experience

with the asphalt industry,

Harsco Metals supplied steel

slag aggregate. The Solution

was recommended by a

consulting Engineer working

for the South Africa Highways

Authority.

Outcome:

Following the Success of the

What is HFS?

A High Friction Surfacing used on top of existing road surfaces on high risk

sites such as approaches to pedestrian crossings or junctions as well as

bends and exists from motorways (freeways) etc

Usually consists of a specialised adhesive system using a thin sprinkled on

layer of calcined bauxite (1-3mm)

Resultat vägmaskinstest: partiklar

• Bildningen av PM10 från slagg-beläggningen var jämförbar med de mest lågemitterande ABS11-beläggningar som tidigare provats för PM10-bildning i vägmaskinen.

• PM10 har en masstorleksfördelning som är mycket lik andra beläggningars med toppar runt 3 och 6 µm.

• Likaså antalsfördelningen av ultrafina partiklar är likartad andra provade beläggningar med en antalstopp runt 30 nm.

Utifrån litteraturstudier och inledande laboratorieförsök har stålslagg och slaggasfalt av EAF-typ visat sig ha följande egenskaper:

Utmärkande egenskaper för slaggasfalt • Mycket god resistens mot deformationer • Mycket hög styvhetsmodul • Utmärkt resistens mot stripping (vatten tvättar bort bindemedel från ballasten), vilket ger hög vattenbeständighet • Sämre bearbetbarhet vid handläggning p g a att asfaltmassan är tung och styv • Termiska egenskaper –asfaltmassan svalnar långsammare jämfört med konventionell asfalt • Bra friktion och god resistens mot polering • Bullerreducerande egenskaper (effekt av ytporerna) • Vägytan förblir mörk p g a att slaggen är mörk • Sprickor ger ej upphov till sten- eller bruksförluster (bra vidhäftning mellan bindemedel/ballast)

Utmärkande egenskaper för stålslagg • Korndensiteten är hög – ca 3,6 kg/dm³ • Har ibland något högre bindemedelsabsorption än konventionella stenmaterial p g a. en större mängd ytporer, vilket medför en högre specifik yta • Materialet har en lämplig kornform och relativt bra mekaniska egenskaper. • Bra volymstabilitet, vilket medför liten risk för svällning under förutsättning att slaggen lagrats en tid • Högre fuktinnehåll än konventionella material pga. porerna • Slagg måste upphettas mer i torktrumman än konventionella stenmaterial p g a. hög halt av järnoxid med god värmeledningsförmåga

Försök i Järfälla med en stenrik asfaltbeläggningen 8 mm med något förhöjt hålrum och stålslagg i sortering 2/8 mm.

Enligt laboratoriestudier erhöll denna beläggningstyp mycket bra beständighet. Prall: 29. Den har legat i 3 år utan skador. Textur (MPD): 0,9 mm. Bullerreduktion: -3 dBA, ÅDT 12 000 fordon, 50 km/h. Modifierat bindemedel + vidhäftningsmedel. Friktion: 0,80

• Bättre egenskaper ifråga om beständighet och stabilitet än konventionell asfalt

• Bör användas där de särskilt goda egenskaperna kommer till sin nytta (utsatta platser)

• Ger en viss bullerreduktion och bra friktion • Lång livslängd ger god ekonomi • Slaggasfalt är tyngre, mörkare och mer tungarbetad än

konventionell asfalt.
