Using Collected Data This section of the Help File is intended to provide information about a wide range of topics including what you can do with the EDR data once it is downloaded from a vehicle and the type of data you may expect for from an ECU using one of the listed manufacturer CDR cables. Click on any of the links below for further information on the subject. Viewing and Printing Collected Data Viewing Data After successfully collecting data from a module, the end user is prompted to save the CDR file. The type of data recovered is shown on the right hand side of the status bar at the bottom of the screen (see below). Use the Preview Report menu selection from the File menu or icon to view the data. Status Bar Printing a report The CDR report can be printed to a printer or saved as a Portable Document File (PDF). Viewing and Printing Collected DataViewing DataAfter successfully collecting data from a module, the end user is prompted to save the CDR file. GM Engineering Translation ReportsFor most newer GM vehicles, the CDR tool provides an Engineering Translation Report in addition to the typical CDR Report.

It is important users understand that the Engineering Translation Report (ETR) is a hexadecimal data translation tool. Unlike the CDR report, the ETR may translate and display data elements for an EDR system which may or may not be supported on or configured for the vehicle being interrogated. For some vehicle applications, the ETR may include data elements which are not supported or displayed in the CDR Report. Therefore, the ETR should only be used by qualified individuals who possess a working knowledge of the EDR system in question.

Exporting CDR Report Data to a CSV FileIn recent years, the amount of EDR data made accessible to accident investigators through the CDR tool has increased significantly as demonstrated in the Ford PCM CDR reports. The large amount of data from these new systems made it necessary for Bosch to implement a feature which allows the user to easily export CDR report data into a generic format for import into other analytical tools and third party PC applications without changing the CDR file itself.

Starting with CDR version 3.0, a new feature was added to the CDR tool which allows users to export EDR data retrieved from Ford PCMs to a Comma Separated Values (CSV) formatted ASCII text file. The CSV formatted file maintains the tabular organization of the data so that it can be easily imported into other third party software such as databases or spreadsheet applications.

Vehicle systems that Support CSV ExportAs new CDR software releases are made available, Bosch will extend the support for the CSV Export feature to most newly supported vehicle systems. To determine which vehicle systems CSV export function supports, refer to the Supported Vehicles section of this help file and look for the CSV icon located under the supported EDR module (see the screen shot below).

CSV support for a vehicle system is indicated by the CSV icon

Export CDR Data to a CSV FileFollow the instructions below to export CDR data to a CSV file:

1. Open a CDR file or download data from a system that supports the CSV Export function. The CSV toolbar Icon will be active if the CSV function is supported for the CDR file are working with.

2. Click on the CSV button in the CDR application tool bar.

3. Click the "Save" button in the "Save Report" window that appears, prompting you to save the data into a CSV type file. By default, the file will be saved in the same folder as the CDR file and the file name will pre-fill with the same name as CDR file you have open.

4. You are now ready to import or open the newly created CSV file using a third party tool that supports CSV file formats, spreadsheet application or a text editor.

Save CDR Report to Adobe PDF FileIf you wish to share CDR reports with others who do not have access to the CDR software, you can save the CDR report as an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file which allows anyone who has an Adobe Acrobat reader to view it. The PDF file that is created looks just like the CDR report as it is shown in the CDR software.

Save Your CDR Report to PDF FormatFollow the instructions below to save a CDR report to PDF:

1. Open a CDR file or download data from a supported vehicle.

2. Click on the PDF button in the CDR application tool bar.

3. Click the "Save" button in the "Save Report" window that appears, prompting you to save the CDR report to a PDF file. By default, the file will be saved in the same folder as the CDR file and the file name will pre-fill with the same name as the CDR file you have open.

Saving Collected Data Without a VIN Sequence NumberIf you want to share CDR files with others without revealing a vehicle's unique Vehicle Identification Number included in CDR reports, PDF files or CSV export files, use the function called "Save file without sequence number" to create a new CDR file with the unique VIN production sequence number removed.

When you use this function, the CDR application will replace the last 6 numbers (production sequence number) of all VINs shown in the CDR report with asterisk characters (*). The application removes the sequence number from two types of VINs including user entered VIN and VINs acquired from the ECU[1] and, creates a new CDR file with the modified VIN numbers. All viewed and printed CDR reports, PDF files and CSV exported data created with this new CDR file will include the modified VIN numbers.

In addition to CDR reports, printouts, PDFs and CSV files, this function also removes VIN sequence numbers from all raw binary and hex data[1] in the CDR file.

Saving a CDR file without Sequence NumberFollow the steps below to save a CDR file without a VIN sequence number. Note that when you save a CDR file without a VIN sequence number, you will actually create a new file in addition to the one you started with.

1. Open a CDR file or download data from a supported vehicle. If you are downloading data, make sure you save the CDR file when prompted to do so.

2. Click on the "File" menu and then click "Save Without VIN Sequence Number".

3. Type a file name in the "File name" field of the "Save without sequence number" window. The name you type in this field will become the name of the new CDR file with VIN sequence numbers removed.

4. From the "Save as Type" field of the "Save without sequence number" window, you can choose to "Clear comments and case information" which will remove all the comments and case information stored with the file (see below for screen shot).

5. Click the "Save" button in the "Save without sequence number" window. The new file will be saved in the same folder as the CDR file you originally opened.

6. Once the new file is saved without VIN sequence numbers, the CDR application will return to displaying the CDR file you started with which contains the entire VIN information. If you wish to view the new CDR file that contains the VINs with the sequence numbers removed, then you will need to open the file to view it.

7. Go to the folder you saved the new CDR file, open it with the CDR application and preview the CDR report. Note that the last 6 digits of all VINs were replaced with asterisks. Below are excerpts from an example of a PCM CDR file showing the various places in a CDR report where the VIN number is changed.

Clear comments and Case Information

Chrysler Output ContentThe typical CDR report from a Chrysler vehicle includes several components/parts depending on the particular type of module being accessed. The report is a display of the interpretation of the recovered hexadecimal data to a plain language format. The data elements found in one report may not be the same as those found in another report depending on the module type. The general layout spans several pages.

The Chrysler reports include the following CDR report sections. It is important to note that, depending on the vehicle capabilities, some of the sections listed below after System Configuration at Retrieval may not be included in all Chrysler CDR reports.

CDR File Information - includes information about the download and CDR file information.

Comments - Includes any use entered comments.

Data Limitations - this section includes the manufacturer authored information and limitations of the data included in the CDR report.

System Status at Retrieval - includes information that is not considered crash data but is about the state of the module at the time of the download.

System Configuration at Retrieval - this section also does not include crash data but includes information such as how the ACM restraints were configured at the time the EDR data was downloaded.

System Status at Event - includes crash data which is specific to the system status at the time the

deployment/non-deployment event was triggered.

Deployment Command Data - this data is also considered crash data and includes device deployment command information.

DTCs Present at Start of Event - crash data which includes a list of DTCs present at the start of the event

Longitudinal Crash Pulse - crash data which includes longitudinal g-data and/or delta-V data

Lateral Crash Pulse - crash data which includes lateral g-data and/or delta-V data

Rollover Crash Pulse - crash data which includes rollover (roll angle)

Pre-Crash Data - crash data which includes was recorded for some period of time prior to the crash. This data is typically includes information which was recorded off of the vehicle's network data bus from other ECUs in the vehicle.

Hexadecimal Data - this section of the report includes all the raw data collected from the vehicle during the download. Not all hexadecimal data is translated in the CDR report.

The basic report cannot be edited within in the CDR System software. Exported tabular format into a "CSV" file may be imported into another program and reformatted to meet the end user’s display preferences. The report may also be saved as a "PDF" file and distributed in that format to those who do not have the CDR System software.

CDR Cable Number F00K108226This section provides general information about the EDR capability of the ACM(s) this cable connects to and the type of EDR data that may be recorded. Always refer to the Data Limitations section of the CDR report for further information about the ACM and limitations of the data retrieved. The information included in the CDR report's Data Limitations section for this ACM is considered to be more precise and current than the generalized information included below. The actual data retrieved from the ACM may differ from what is described below. Review all vehicle coverage notes which are referenced in the Supported Vehicle list for this ACM before attempting to retrieve data from it.

Generally, these modules are capable of capturing "pre-crash" data as a result of a frontal impact severe enough to command deployment of the airbag. Always refer to the coverage notes in the Supported Vehicle lists. There may be vehicle coverage limitations you are not aware of.

Depending on the module type, coverage limitations noted in the Supported Vehicle list and equipment & accessories the vehicle is configured with, the report will provide the end user with several data elements which may include:

Airbag control module part number, serial number and supplier

Vehicle restraint system configuration information

Internally stored original vehicle Identification Number

-100 ms to +149ms of longitudinal acceleration data[1]

2 or 5[1] seconds of pre-crash data with samples for every 100 ms sample rate which may include the following data elements:

These ACMs are capable of storing event data from both deployment (rollover events - if equipped, side and frontal impacts) and non-deployment events in up to 2 event records. Stored deployment event data cannot be overwritten and non-deployment records can.

Ford Output ContentThe typical CDR report from a Ford vehicle includes several components/parts depending on the particular type of module being accessed. The report is a display of the interpretation of the recovered hexadecimal data to a plain language format. The data elements found in one report may not be the same as those found in another report depending on the module type. The general layout spans several pages.

On the first page of the report, the end user will find the File Information block followed by a body of text known as the "Data limitations" text. After that, the end user will find the System Status Summary for the file type (deployment or non-deployment) downloaded.

After the System Status section, the end user will typically find the Delta-V and acceleration graph which is made up of the information in the next section which is the acceleration and delta-V Data Table.

The next section is a display of the hexadecimal data copied from the RCM which is not converted to human readable form. The last part of the report reflects the comments (if any) entered by the Technician at the time of the readout.

The basic report cannot be edited within in the CDR System software. Exported tabular format into a "CSV" file may be imported into another program and reformatted to meet the end user’s display preferences. The report may also be saved as a "PDF" file and distributed in that format to those who do not have the CDR System software.

Taurus/Sable modules have 78ms duration from algorithm wake up. Non Taurus/Sable modules have 134 to 142 data points at 1.0 ms intervals before wake-up and 0.8 ms intervals after wake-up. These modules display 50ms after deployment, the remaining time is before deployment and typically some is before algorithm wake up. Users should be aware that crashes typically last 100 to 150 milliseconds and that the limited time duration of data in these modules may not be sufficient to capture the entire crash. Proper use of this limited data is taught in the Bosch-approved CDR analyst training class.

For MY01 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable only, the report also displays lateral Crash Pulse data including a data table and data graph showing the lateral acceleration and resulting change in forward velocity (delta-V, MPH) versus time (Acceleration and delta-V polarity conforms to SAE J211).

Unlocked events can be overwritten with more locked or unlocked recent events. Newer events will continue to replace older unlocked events unless all three event records are locked.
