Lync Online Dedicated customers that have Archiving and Monitoring can request the ability to connect
directly to snapshots of this data on SQL Server storage. This enables you to do their own custom
reporting against the data. The daily snapshots have the prior 60 days of data available.
These snapshots are read-only copies of the production databases which are recreated daily. You have
the ability to give permissions to specific users to get access to this data. A secure data connection is
established to the databases. Standard SQL connectivity tools such as ODBC, SQL Management Studio,
MS Office, or other tools can be used.
Intended Audience
The intended audience for this document is SQL Administrators or Database Administrators who are
comfortable with querying data from SQL databases.

Accessing Lync Online Archiving and
Monitoring Data When your organization subscribes to the Lync Online archiving and monitoring feature you can
request the ability to connect directly to the daily snapshots of your archiving and monitoring data on
Microsoft SQL Server. These snapshots enable your organization to do its own custom reporting against
the data.
The snapshots display the prior 60 days of data and are read-only copies of the production databases
that are recreated daily. You have the ability to give permissions to specific users in your organization
for access to this data. Connectivity to the databases is secured using SSL. Standard SQL connectivity
tools such as the Open Database Connectivity specification (ODBC), SQL Management Studio, and
Microsoft Office and can be used for data access.
The intended audience for the information in this topic is SQL Administrators or database
administrators who are comfortable with querying data from SQL databases. For additional guidance,
see Database Schemas and Additional Resources.
Available Databases Daily snapshots of the following databases are available for read-only access:
Archiving (LcsLog). This database contains archives of peer-to-peer and multiparty instant
messages.
Monitoring Server (QoEMetrics and LcsCDR). The Lync Monitoring Server role collects data
about the quality of your network media on your network endpoints and about usage information
related to audio/video sessions, instant messages (IM), meetings, application sharing, and file
transfers. This information can help you provide the best possible media experience for your users.
The monitoring server also collects call error records (CERs), which you can use to troubleshoot
failed calls. Additionally, it collects usage information in the form of call detail records (CDRs) about
various Lync Server features so that you can calculate return on investment of your deployment and
plan the future growth of your deployment.

Microsoft already provides several reports for reviewing monitoring data. Access is provided to
these monitoring server databases to enable you to get deeper insight as needed.
Database Schemas and Additional Resources For additional information about Lync Online archiving and monitoring data access, see the following
resources.

Communications Server 2007 R2 Archiving Database Schema
Note:
The Lync 2010 archiving database schema is not published publicly. The Communications
Server 2007 R2 schema is very similar to what Lync offers with a few variations in column
names

Connecting to Archiving and Monitoring
Databases This topic describes how to connect to the Lync Online archiving and monitoring databases.
Server and Database Names Use the following SQL Server fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for connectivity to the archiving and
monitoring databases: archive.xxxd.mgd.msft.net where xxx is the number assigned to your domain
(for example 997).
The database names are:
LcsLog_2400. Archiving database daily snapshot.
LcsCDR_2400. Call Detail Records (CDR) database daily snapshot.
QoEMetrics_2400. Quality of Experience (QoE) database daily snapshot.

SQL Management Studio Connectivity to SQL Server To use SQL Management Studio to connect to the database:
1. Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and then SQL Server Management Studio.
2. In the Connect to Server dialog box, type archive.xxxd.mgd.msft.net where xxx is the number
assigned to your customer domain. Then click Connect.
Note:
Ensure the user account you’re using to connect is a member of the Active Directory groups
explicitly given permissions to the databases.

3. After you’ve successfully connected to the SQL Server, expand Databases and then expand
Database Snapshots as shown below. It’s possible to explore the databases in SQL Management
Studio as you would any other database.
ODBC Connectivity to SQL Server It’s also possible to simply use ODBC data sources to connect to the databases. The following
procedure describes how to create an ODBC data source that any ODBC-aware application can use to
connect to the databases.
1. Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and then click Data Sources (ODBC).

4. In the next dialog box, enter the data source name and type the FQDN of the SQL Server that has
the relevant snapshots of the databases you're connecting to. This FQDN is always
archiving.xxxd.mgd.msft.net where xxx is the number for your domain. Click Next.

5. In the next dialog box, select to use your current Active Directory credentials to connect to SQL and
then click Next.

6. In the next dialog box, select the relevant database snapshot to query under Change the default
database to: (for example, LcsCDR_2400, LcsLog_2400, or QoEMetrics_2400) and then click Next.

7. Click Finish and then Test Connection. If the connection is successful you should see the following
dialog box displayed. If connectivity or authentication fails, ensure you can resolve the FQDN of the
SQL server, that you can telnet to it on TCP port 1433, and that the account you’re attempting to
use has permissions necessary to connect to SQL and read from the database you’re attempting to
access.

8. After the tests complete successfully, click OK, and then OK again. At this point the data source has
been created and can be used by other applications to connect to the database. The screenshot
below shows the data source that you created.
Excel Connectivity to SQL Server To learn how to use Excel to connect to the databases, see the Report Customization section (the
Chapter_02_Archiving_and_Monitoring_R1.doc in the Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Resource Kit). Be sure
to use the server and database names specified in the Server and Database Names section for
connectivity.

Transferring Data from Databases After you’ve established connectivity to the Lync Online archiving and monitoring databases, it’s a good
idea to transfer them for ease of reporting, long-term storage, or data modification if necessary. This
section will focus on one way to initially transfer the databases using the SQL Import and Export Wizard.
Using SQL Server Import and Export Wizard for Initial
Database Transfer This procedure describes how to use the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard to transfer a Lync Online
archiving and monitoring database.
1. Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and then Import and Export Data (64-
bit).
2. On the wizard starting page, click Next.

4. In the Database drop-down list box, select one of the databases to transfer (LcsLog_2400,
LcsCDR_2400, or QoEMetrics_2400) and then click Next.
5. On the Choose a Destination page, select a destination server in your environment to move the
database to. Select a server and either select a database that’s already been created, or create a new
one by clicking New, and then click Next.
6. On the Specify Table Copy or Query page, click Next.

8. Click Finish and then Finish again to run the job immediately and kick off a transfer of the entire
database. After the transfer is completed you’ll have a full copy of the database on your local SQL
Server to run reports against, query against, or modify as needed.
See SQL Server Import and Export Wizard for more information on using the wizard.
