In the late 1980s Prof Horne in his report into the prospective Computerised and Street Works Register included in his recommendations:• the need for a definitive gazetteer of all the streets in the country • that the data should be collected at source • that it should be application independent – “collect once, use many times”

The NSG working party had a range of members and the resultant specification became BS7666 Part 1.

The signing of local government’s Mapping Services Agreement (MSA) in 2005

Local government’s contract with itself to deliver the highest quality data it needs to support its agendas around providing improved services to citizens and links to other organisations.

Intelligent Addressing Ltd appointed NSG (and NLPG) hub custodians

Obligations on Highway Authorities to:- provide regular updates (quarterly moving to monthly)- improve the completeness and quality

Utility Street Works 2007The NSG being used for other applications:-

• 2006 NSG Award winner – Sandwell MBC using its LSG for a wide range of applications including inventory and condition surveys, street lighting and UKPMS

• the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) is built to BS7666 Part 2, which means it must have links to the NSG for USRNs. As the quality of the NLPG is being improved in terms of completeness, consistency and currency there are knock on benefits for the NSG. For example the greater involvement of the Street Naming and Numbering Officers. The objective of the LA community is to move all 375 authorities to daily updates by October 2007.
