Positive Attitude4

• Do you worry a lot when you have a problem?

• What do you think we should do when we have a problem?

Know About Positive AttitudeOur attitude shapes our lives. People with a positive attitude face every situation with self-confi dence. They are always happy because they choose to see the good side of things. People who have a positive attitude believe that they can overcome diffi culties.

Once upon a time, in Scotland, there was a king called Robert Bruce. He fought and won many battles. One day, he was defeated and he ran away from the battlefi eld. He hid in a cave.

King Bruce was upset and ready to give up all hope. As he lay on the ground, he

saw a spider on the wall. It was trying to reach its web on the roof of the cave. It failed again and again.

‘Poor thing!’ said King Bruce, ‘you, too, know what it is to fail.’

But the spider did not give up. After every fall, the spider tried again. It did not lose heart. The spider reached its web on its seventh attempt.

The little spider’s determination fi lled King Bruce with new hope and courage. He came out of the cave and gathered his soldiers. This time he fought bravely. He was successful in making his country free.

Have you ever faced any situation like King Bruce where you felt like giving up but chose not to?

Little Nitya has a magic formula for developing a positive attitude. She says that we can do the following things:

• Stop worrying. It only makes you upset. Try and think of positive things.

• If you have a problem, talk to your friends, your parents or a relative.

• View every problem as an opportunity to develop yourself.

• If you have made a mistake then try to learn a lesson from it.

• Be friends with people who have a positive attitude.

• Make others happy.

5 Self-Management

How much time did you spend yesterday while:

• talking to your friend ................. .

• sleeping ................. .

• playing outdoor games ................. .

Know About Self-ManagementIf we want to lead a peaceful life we need to know the art of self-management.

Self-management can be of two types:

a. Managing daily needs

b. Managing emotional needs

Managing daily needs

Every morning after you get up, you need to get ready to go to school. You need to plan and manage many things to reach your school on time. A few things that you should ask yourself:

• Am I getting up on time?

• Do I have enough time to take bath and have breakfast?

• Have I kept my school uniform ready, neat and clean?

• Have I combed my hair and kept myself tidy?

• Have I kept my books and notebooks according to the day’s timetable?

Similarly, when you are back from school, here are a few questions that you need to ask yourself:

• Have I kept my books and notebooks at the proper place so that I do not have to search for them the next day?

• Have I completed the assignment or homework that has been given?

• Is my bag packed and kept in the right place before I go to bed?

• Have I planned how long I will play outdoors?

• How much time am I going to spend watching television? Is it absolutely necessary or am I wasting time?

• Do I spend time with my parents and family members?

There may be several other things which you need to think about so that you become effi cient in managing yourself.

Managing emotional needs

You should also learn to control your negative emotions.

• Avoid being restless. You can play with your friends or read a book if you feel restless.

• Control your anger. You can try taking deep breaths, drinking a glass of water, listening to your favourite song, or playing alone if you are angry.

• Do not be greedy. Learn to love the things which you already have.

If we want to be successful in life it is important to learn about self-management.

Palak said that she was surprised to see different types of dresses being worn by people in the northern states of India. Women wore saree, salwar kameez, kurta-churidar and western dresses. Men wore pants, shirts and also traditional dresses like dhoti and kameez.

Nida also shared that she enjoyed the different types of food that she ate in Hyderabad. Biryani and kheer pooriya were her favourite food items. She was very excited to know that every state has its own popular food items and traditional dresses.

India is a big country. We speak different languages. We wear different types of dresses and celebrate various festivals.

India also has people belonging to different religions. They visit temples, mosques, churches, gurdwaras and other places of worship.

Although India is a diverse country, people live in unity with one another.
