ADVANCED CONFERENCE PROGRAMME Düsseldorf, Germany, 30 November - 2 December 2010 VALVE WORLD 2010 T he best place for us to work together on the effects of valves is, without any doubt, the Valve World 2010 Conference. Here, we have the opportunity to share personal and professional experiences. On behalf of the steering committee I am very pleased to invite you to join us at theValve World 2010 Conference in Düsseldorf at the 30th of November to the 2nd of December 2010. I am deeply impressed by the number and the quality of the suggested presentations which we had to select in the Steering Committee. Out of more than 120 really good presentations we had to select the most excellent. I want to say thank you to the Steering Committee and to the whole community of Valve World for the intensive and fair discussions across all nationalities. During the discussions about the programme, I also got good overview of how much knowledge and expertise will be present at theValve World 2010 event in Düsseldorf – not only in the conference but also on the exhibition floor. As you can see, the advance conference programme contains seven plenary lectures, 72 parallel presentations and six workshops. These workshops are all chaired by end-users and well-known experts in the flow control industry. The session topics will be standardization, design, safety integrity systems (SIS), materials, maintenance, fugitive emissions, fluid dynamics, reliability, sealing, procurement and castings. Lots and lots of end-users already announced their participation in this year’s event, so please do sign up quickly and benefit from the attractive ‘early bird’ prices. If handling of valves has any impact on your business, I highly recommend you to take this opportunity to join us and your fellow colleagues at theValve World 2010 Conference & Exhibition. Control Valve ReliabilityPrediction Roundtable DiscussionSince 2005 control valve reliability in generaland reliability prediction in specific have beenon the agenda of any ValveWorld event. And in 2010 we have quite a number ofcontrol valve reliability papers beingpresented by control valve reliability experts. We want to take the opportunity of havingthose experts in town to sharing informallyadvances in reliability prediction. Pending thepreparation outcome and what is mosteffective it may in the form of a “horseshoe” type chairs setup, with Mr HenkHinssen moderating and / or a set of veryshort (1 or 2 pages max.) reliabilityprediction presentations. Part of this will beConval’s new approach on reliabilityprediction using a Reliability Index based ona generic reliability prediction flowchart.Theoriginal ideas were presented at Suzhou in2009 but the conceptual thoughts haveprogressed substantial to be presented andeven demonstrated.

Fugitive Emissions WorkshopBoth fugitive emission international standardsAPI 622 and ISO 15848 are currently beingrevised by various committees and forums.

Meetings in France and the USA arescheduled plus discussions, emails arenumerous and ongoing.First indications are that changes are beingmade to make these standards more userfriendly and cost effective. This is really greatnews to the industry! The purpose of the fugitive emissionworkshop by Mr Barrie Kirkman will be tobring experts from across the valvecommunity to discuss and examine suchchanges. An overview of standardsamendments will be given.

A panel of experts will be selected from• API 622 & ISO 15848 committees• Major End Users• International valve manufacturers• Recognised test houses• Other specialists

The experts will summarise their position onthe proposed amendments.

Typical questions that will be discussed:• Are such changes enough to effectivelyreduce valve fugitive emissions?

• Have test protocols been aligned to bemore practical and cost effective?

• Has the opportunity to harmonise API andISO been effectively seized?

• Will these standards be able to meet everincreasing End User requirements andlegislation?

However the most important aspect of theworkshop will be the opportunity forworkshop attendees to actively participate, contribute to the discussion and raise theirown questions.

SIS World Roundtable DiscussionOn-off valves have been part of ValveWorldfor some time and the step to a SISWorldsection under ValveWorld seems stretchedbut not illogical.Using a “horse shoe” type chairs setup in theroom, Mr Henk Hinssen acting as moderatorand using the top seed SISWorld issuesfrom the relevant LinkedIn SIS groups (MrHinssen will have a couple of introductionslides on the LinkedIn forums and what theyare bringing – good and bad), the audiencewill be stimulated for suggestions andfeedback on those issues and howValveWorld (regular columns, workshops, presentations, others) can be an effectiveforum for the SIS community, for the end-users, the engineering contractors as well asthe suppliers of SIS equipment.

A selection of this year’sconference presenters

Ron Strang, Shipham ValvesMr Strang graduated as aMechanical Engineer fromAston University, in 1981 andfrom Hull University with anMBA in 2007. He has workedin the design anddevelopment of valves for nearly 30 years. Most recently he has been employed asTechnical Director at ShiphamValves in Hull. The general trend he foresees within thevalve industry is that customers are preparedto spend in order to ensure that they get thequality of product they require.Witnessedfinal acceptance tests continue to increase asdoes the demand for paperwork assuring thequality of the product and material.Thisclearly demonstrates that customers see thismoney as well spent if it guarantees a return.According to Mr Strang, gaining someacceptance of epoxy resin composite valvewill be a significant challenge, particularly asthere are no material or valve standards inthis area. The material is significantly differentto the usual metallic materials and thedemand for appropriate quality assurance istherefore difficult to satisfy.Asked what he wants to achieve at this year’sevent, he points out that his presentationaims to suggest how appropriate standardsalong with a suitable quality assurancemeasures can be provided. It would be anachievement if this approach is bothunderstood and accepted.

Ryohei Furuta, Kitz CorporationMr Furuta is working for KitzCorporation for more than11 years. The main field of hisactivities were the researchand the development ofpneumatic actuation andautomated valves.Talking about the generaltrends that are going on in the valve industry,he thinks that many SIL certified equipmentswill be released to operate automated valveslike solenoid valves and switches. Users canchoose these from wide range selection.Another thing is that the cost for safetybecomes more severe in recent economic

recession. When it comes to futurechallenges, Mr Furuta explains that expandingbusiness in SIS related field in domestic andinternational, and developing more safetysolutions will be the goals ahead. For this year’s event, his main aim is, next tohis presentation, to meeting many expertsengineers and users around the world andrefresh business relationships.

Steve Hagen, Emerson ProcessManagementMr Hagen, is the FieldvueMarketing Manager withEmerson ProcessManagement, FisherControls Division inMarshalltown Iowa. Prior tohis current duties, he was a Fieldvue ProductSupport Engineer for 3 years handling level 2issues on both product and software. Hespent most of his time (around 17 years) atFisher in Educational Services and has over20 years of experience with valve, instrument, and diagnostic applications.Themain trend that Mr Hagen foresees is thatinstruments and software are beingdeveloped to be more user friendly.Whichwas not always the case as, several years ago, when new products were developed, theybecame increasing more complex.Talkingabout the biggest challenges ahead, he thinksthat making all people familiar with the newdiagnostic capabilities of instruments shouldbe a requirement. Many issues and plantshutdowns could be eliminated by payingattention to the current diagnosticcapabilities. His personal goal for this year’s ValveWorldevent is to convince attendees to pay moreattention to diagnostic capabilities and dosome predictive maintenance.

Tom Beaulieu, FlowserveMr Beaulieu is since 2005Product Manager atFlowserve. He holds aBachelor of Science inmechanical engineering and aMaster in Business

Administration. Since 1992, he is involved inthe valve business and has worked forseveral different companies in differentpositions before joining Flowserve.Talkingabout trends, Mr Beaulieu thinks thatactivities in nuclear power have increasedtremendously and probably will continue togrow assuming the pressure to reducegreenhouse gases remains high, especiallywhen it comes to power plant constructionin China, which will remain high while India isset to have dramatic growth in the comingtime. With regards to challenges he thinksthat finding qualified tradesmen to performmanufacturing activities, working withoffshore suppliers to reduce lead times onraw material shipments, competing in what isbecoming a commodity market, and passingexperience and knowledge from elderemployees to new hires will be the greatchallenges ahead.Mr Beaulieu’s main reasons to come toValveWorld 2010 are learning about markettrends, developing markets, growthopportunities, technological advances andregional competitors.

Yoshiko Sato, Kitz CorporationMr Sato graduated fromYokohama City University,Japan, with a qualification as abachelor of physics. He startedworking for Kitz Corporationin 1996. Since then, he hasbeen working at its Materials and ProcessTechnology Center. Currently, he specializes inresearch and development of new high alloysteel valve castings. When asked what he seesas general trends and challenges in the valveindustry, he points out that users’requirements for corrosion resistance of highalloy steel valves have become increasinglydemanding due to application of pipingequipment to extremely hazardous serviceenvironments all over the world.Meeting as many knowledgeableprofessionals in the casting industry aspossible, even though his stay might be ratherlimited, is Mr Sato’s big goal for this year’sValveWorld conference and exhibition.
