(Lit.: decidir algo mediantevotación de paja). Significaechar algo a suertes colo-

cando varias pajitos de dis-tintos tamaños entre los de-dos. De ahí la expresión:"to get the short straw" (osea, tener mala suerte). Re-cuerda el refrán: "That's the last straw...": es el colmo.

Coloquialmente, "encontrar-se en chirona". Literalmente,"jug"; jarra. Existe un platoculinario que es "Jugged hare": guiso de liebre, poreso, más abajo se dice "the hare didn't get jugged", te-niendo esto doble sentido.

tar muy enfadado, "echan-do humo" de cólera.

Sentirse triste o deprimido.De ahí la palabra "blues" que ha dado el nombre aun tipo de música de carác-ter triste. Aprende bien "out of the blue": de repente(caído del cielo).

PAGE 27"Gone with the wind":

Es el título de la famosísi-ma película que en españolse tradujo por "Lo que el

viento se llevó". (Lit.:"arrastrado por el viento").

Alude a la desconexión delmundo cuando uno duermecomo un tronco (que, porcierto, es "to sleep like a

log"). Lo contrario es "not to sleep a wink": no pegarojo, o, como dicen en lamisma viñeta "to pass a sleepless night".

Animar a alguien. To cheer: alegrar(se). Unafrase de ánimo es "cheer up". Pero "cheers" es elbrindis "¡salud!".

Repasa estas notas.

"QUITE" AND "RATHER"

Las dos palabras pertenecen a la categoría de adverbios gramaticales y las dos tienen el significado de "bastante".

La diferencia es que se suele usar "rather" con ideas y palabrasde significado negativo.

"The exam was rather difficult".

"Quite" se coloca antes del artículo a/an:

"Quite a good idea; quite an interesting story; quite a long way".

Asociado a algunos verbos, "quite" significa también "comple-tely"

"I haven't quite finished: I haven't finished completely"."I quite agree with you: I agree with you entirely".

También conocerás la palabra "rather" en la expresión "I would rather + infinitivo sin to", en cuyo caso, significa "preferir". Estaestructura se usa mucho en comparaciones: "I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail".

Algunos verbos del tipo de "like, enjoy", etc., pueden llevar elmatiz de "quite". Ejemplo: "I quite like him but I don't find him attractive ".

"Rather" se puede colocar antes o después del artículo a/an: "a rather tiring day", o bien "rather a tiring day".

Cuando usamos "rather" con palabras de sentido positivo, elsignificado adquiere el sentido de "sorprendentemente, inesperadamente".

Por ejemplo: rather nice: surprisingly nice; rather intelligent:

more intelligent than expected, etc.

Se puede en una misma frase utilizar "rather" y "quite", de estamanera:

"He's quite tall but rather fat".

"Quite" puede significar "completely" (totalmente, completamente) cuando va asociado a una serie de adjetivos:
