discuss verb tense.

What is it???

• Also known as grammatical tense• One of five, yes five, main qualities of verb

expression. Other qualities include along with mood, voice, aspect, and person

• There are 12 verb tenses in English which can take place in the past, present and or future

The 12 Verb Tenses include:

Past: The regular verb to make is

Simple = made Progressive = was/were making

Perfect = had made Perfect Progressive = had been making

Present: the regular verb to make is:

Simple = make/makesProgressive = am/is/are making

Perfect = has/ have madePerfect Progressive = has / have been making

Future: The regular verb to make is:

Simple = will makeProgressive = will be making

Perfect = will have madePerfect Progressive = will have been making

Time Markers

• Time markers are time expressions or signal words that can

help you when dealing with verb tense.

Past

Simple = yesterday, the day before yesterday, last week/month/year, a few minutes/two hours/five years ago

Progressive = while, when, as, at that time/moment

Perfect / Perfect Progressive = before, after, by the time, already

Present

Simple = rarely, sometimes, regularly,   always, every week/day/time/year,  usually

Progressive = now, right now, at present, today, these days, nowadays, currently, presently

Perfect / Perfect Progressive = since, for, already, yet, just, so far, until now, several/four/many times

Future

Simple = tonight, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, later, next week/month/year, in 2005, for the next 2 years/days/months

Progressive = in 2005, for the next 2 years/days/months

Perfect / Perfect Progressive = by (a future point in time), by this time next year
