Vienna is by far the smallest federal state of Austria, but its economic centre. A quarter of all working people of the entire country are employed in Vienna. The service sector and the manufacturing sector are more or less equal in importance as employers. Among the goods produced in Vienna are food, electrical appliances, chemicals, metal products and clothes. Among the service sector administration and banking play a central role. Vienna is the seat of many multinationals and is becoming more and more important as a centre for trade between Western and Eastern Europe.

GGOOIINNGG OOUUTT IINN VVIIEENNNNAA If you are in Vienna and want to discover this exciting city there are a lot of opportunities to do this: WHAT TO DO DURING THE DAY? City Hall

In July and August many tourists are attracted by the Music Film Festival. At the square in front of the City Hall there are stalls selling fine food and drinks which you can consume while listening to wonderful music. In December there is the Vienna Christkindlmarkt and in January and February there is the “Dream on Ice” with an outdoor ice-rink, punch bars and food stalls. The best way to get there is by U2/ station Rathaus or trams D, 1 or 2. The Viennese coffeehouse If you are in Vienna it’s a must to visit a typical Viennese coffeehouse. Here you can relax, read the newspaper and try a Melange (coffee with frothy milk) with a sweet flaky pastry with apples. We recommend Café Landtmann(opposite the Burgtheater) , Café Einstein (behind the City Hall) or Café Eiles in the 8th district. The best way to get there is by tube 2 or trams 1 or 2.

VIENNA FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Danube Island You get there by U1. Get off at the station “Donauinsel” In summer the Danube Island is a popular meeting place for young people and the favourite recreation area for the Viennese. It is an artificial island that lies between the real Danube River and the New Danube River. The New Danube is an artificial arm of the Danube that was built to protect Vienna from floods. The Danube Island is over 22 kilometres long. Locks separate it from the main river and create an artificial lake for swimming, surfing, water-skiing, etc. right in Vienna.

Grill parties can be held or you can simply enjoy the atmosphere and the sunset by the water. There is a great variety of restaurants ( Greek, Italian, South American, French, Japanese ) , bars and discos on the island that are located around the "Reichsbrücke" ( U1- Donauinsel). It is a very lively area in the evening and late at night . In summer there are even open-air discos here. Here you can experience best a multicultural Vienna.

Every year at the end of June there is the Danube Island Festival. Around two million people come to one of Europe's biggest outdoor parties. This free event features pop, rock and folk concerts for three days.

The best way to explore the Danube Island is by bicycle. If you are "sporty", there is also inline skating, beach volleyball, swimming, water-skiing, boats to rent.
