Here begins a country, Portugal, a region, the Algarve, land of multiple cultural influences. Its location as a borderland territory, has given it a cosmopolitan vibrancy since its inception; the essence of Al Garb and of Andalus.

Numerous outdoor cafes and terraces provide for a relaxed mood, whether we are downtown or by the seashore. Vila Real de Santo António wets its feet on the Rio Guadiana waters, leans against the dunes of Monte Gordo, watches over the Atlantic from the stronghold and picks up oranges from the orchards in Cacela. The majestic flight of the stork and the pink hues of the flamingos fill with colours the Natural Reserve, while the chameleon rehearses his metamorphosis among the pine trees. Here, the visitor can be surprised by the unexpected, be touched by the thrill of discovery and, in the end, better understand its people and traditions around a sea table with herb scented cuisine and seasoned with friendliness.

The City of the Marquis – Built for the Fishermen

Vila Real de Santo António keeps a unique memory, born on the 30th December 1773, date of its foundation by a royal proclamation.A city built from scratch, the first so in Portugal, a perfect example from the Enlightenment, planned by the iron hand of the Marquês de Pombal, Minister to the King José, I (1714-1777), on the aftermath of the 1755’s earthquake, for the reconstruction of the fishermen village of Santo António de Arenilha. The centre of Vila Real de Santo António was inspired by downtown Lisbon, the geometric design of its streets, extending on the radial patterns of the beautiful Portuguese pavement on the main square, enhanced by the city hall and the mother church. A total of 190 buildings remain from the foundation period, some of them still with their original appearance, and featuring the characteristic beautiful ironwork balconies.Keeper of the border defined by the Guadiana, its location was also chosen by geopolitical reasons, allowing Portugal to reinforce its presence on the mouth of one of the most important southern watercourses, the liquid frontier between Portugal and Spain. In, through its mouth, came the large cargo vessels, mainly from England, to load the ore extracted from the mine of São Domingos.Confirming its wealth and pioneering spirit, this was the first city of the Algarve to have street gas lighting (1886). Never forgetting its fishing origins, as the fishermen were the first to dwell here, the city later became ground for the flourishing canning industry of the Algarve, supported by the large presence of tuna fish and sardines on the Algarve shores.

THE CITY OF THE MARqUIS

HISTORY

The traditional fishing crafts are today bits of history, integrating a rich heritage that the city learnt how to change into a dynamic future, without losing its identity. The downtown area is almost like an open shopping centre, where streets steer through shops and terraces, today a definitive place to visit on the way to the other side of the Guadiana, where Iberian routes come together..

Memory Paths

The parish of Cacela is a true historic saddlebag and, the small village of Cacela Velha could have been founded as early as 800 BC by the Phoenicians. In 1240, is for the first time taken from the Moors but, only in 1242, did D. Paio Peres Correia managed to definitely conquer it. In 1775, became part of Vila Real de Santo António territory.Monte Gordo has also an important role as keeper of the most ancestral traditions, preserving until today, the characteristics of a fishing community, the soul and feeling of Vila Real de Santo António.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

HERITAGE

The Obelisk

The obelisk is a monument to the memory of King D. José, defining the central point of the Marquês de Pombal Square, a perfect square, limited by 4 turrets at each corner. The square is the heart of the city, on a blueprint from the Main Court Architect, Captain Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos. On the monument’s pedestal states 1755 but, only on the 13th May 1776, was made public, as an initiative from the fishing commerce on the symbolic opening of Vila Real de Santo António.

Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

This sumptuous temple has one sole nave, five altars and it’s located on the main square. It was built on the 18th Century, having endured several fires and as many reconstructions. The inside features altar-screens on the “rocaille” style and a set of images from the 18th Century, from the sculptor Machado de Castro. The cut-glass from the main chapel and baptistery were installed in the 1940’s, from the algarvian painter JoaquimRebocho. Through the sacristy is possible to access the tower, with its two bells and the clock and from there, see the city’s landscape.

António Aleixo Cultural Centre

The building original function, with its typical architecture of Moorish inspiration, was of military quarters for the troops stationed on the new border village. Time changes and the space was converted into a market for fruit and vegetables, restless centre of the city’s daily life. A new space was built during the 1980’s, and the one located on the Teófilo Braga street, nowadays the commercial main area, was once again free to reinvent itself for cultural purposes. The António Aleixo Cultural Centre was inaugurated in 1998 and named after the popular poet António Aleixo who was born in Vila Real de Santo António in 1899 and died in Loulé in 1949. Today, the space is the centre of the city’s cultural life and the scene of countless exhibitions, shows and other events.

The Customs House

Near the river, the customs house was the first to be finished and, along with the historic buildings of the Fishery Companies, divides the city in two symmetrical halves over which two turrets keep watch.

The Municipal Archive – South Turret

The South Turret houses the Municipal Archive and the preservation of its original layout makes it one of the most important architectonic elements of the historic core. It is a beautiful and valuable historic document that preserves inside its walls an important part of the territory history. It is a precious and beautiful historic document in its own right and serves to protect a great deal of the district’s history in the vast archives

Cacela Velha

Cacela Velha, the eastern point of the River Formosa, is a wonderfully preserved village and it is well worth the effort to spend a little time there. In the small residential area, the Misericórdia house from the XVIII century still stands, and also a XVI structure, the original town hall, the village’s oldest building. In the centre of the main square there is a medieval water reservoir / cistern. Cacela Velha is one of the

“crown jewels” from this territory heritage and demonstrates the dedication in preserving

history and this little town on a hill overlooking the bay of Monte Gordo and the inlets of the River Formosa. It was classified as a site of public interest on the 23rd September 1983 in order to guarantee its architectural integrity and to preserve its history. The town dates back to the time of the Phoenicians and reveals the presence of the Romans and Muslims but above all the spirit of the people who keep its culture alive.

The Fortress of Cacela Velha

From the square bordering the fortress, you can catch sight of one of the most beautiful scenes to be found on the Algarve. Originally a Muslim castle though rebuilt in the XVI century, its importance is underlined by the fact that King D. Sebastião personally inspected the works in 1573. The great earthquake of 1755 left its trail of destruction and was D. Rodrigo de Noronha to commission its rebuilt, which lasted from 1770 to 1794. The

fortress has a trapezoidal plant with bastions and sentry boxes. The fiscal brigade of the Guarda Nacional Republicana has been stationed in the building since 1897 therefore, visits to the interior are not yet possible. With its back wall toward the fortress, the church of NossaSenhora da Encarnação is a temple which dates back to the XIII century, preserving a lateral gothic doorway from that time. The main body of the church dates from the XVI century with reconstructions in the XVIII century. It has a portico in the Renaissance

Time has left us a precious heritage that makes Vila Real proud. The whole Pombalin core is a unique and inseparable heritage of an Enlightenment city raised from scratch.

ENVIRONMENT HERITAGE

NATURE

The Home of the Chameleon

The quiet coolness of the pinewood bridging Vila Real and Monte Gordo provide an invitation to take a relaxing walk and a chance to witness the flora and fauna that flourish here. Over the dunes, the sea air blends with the scents of wild plants with their curious names that translate into lambs of the beach and narcissus of the sands. The National Forest of the Maritime Dunes of Vila Real de Santo António is a protective swathe of green that holds the dunes in place and reduces the sea breeze as well as protecting the native fauna. An important chameleon population lives here, making its home in the forest in one of the last remaining outposts of its natural habitat. The region is also notable for the people themselves who generously share the nature and surrounding calmness with visitors..

The Blue of the Sea and the River

A visit to the wetlands of the reserve, Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António, is well worth the effort. It is the first of its kind in Portugal and is now a haven for birds, fish, molluscs and crustaceans. 2089 hectares have been protected by the Ramsar Convention among other international statutes for nature conservation.A patchwork of life-forms and vegetation render the landscape surprising and unique landscape through the contrasting lagoons and salt-marshes, a perfectly designed, inimitable and secure habitat for many of the species present both in the waters and on the surrounding land. The beautiful flight of the stork or the light rose-coloured clouds of flamingos are spectacular and not to be missed amid the traditional saltpans that reflect the rays of the sun, an unexpected whiteness between the green of the fields and the blue of the river. The marshes, saltpans and the interior give visual contrasts that encourage relaxed strolling. Given a little time to wander, it is easy to appreciate the calmness of the surroundings, punctuated only by the stark white of the traditional houses or old windmills on top of the surrounding hills.

12 - Três Pauzinhos Road - Vila Real de Santo António

The Fluid Road of the South

The sinuous River Guadiana defines the essence of Vila Real de Santo António. One of the most traditional ways of getting to know the area, therefore, is by taking a boat trip on the river, leaving the port to the sound of the waters leaping in order to find the green of the fields mixing with the blue of the river and the sound of thousands of birds chattering. This great river of the south that separates Portugal and Spain or, more precisely, the Algarve from Andalusia has always attracted men, not only by its location but also for its strategic importance and the origins of settlements here go back for centuries.

The Scent of the Sea and the Pines

The beaches of Vila Real de Santo António allure leaps against ; the sea is calm and warm and laps against vast sandy areas including the playful curves and bays of the dunes protected by the shade of pine trees and the channels of the Ria Formosa; scenes of contrast in a wonderful show put on by Nature. The gracious curve of the bay of Monte Gordo protects one of the very best sand areas. A friendly and inviting beach where the local fishing boats add colour and where the seagulls arrive at the end of the day when their work is done. The green swathe of the pine forest creates a wonderfully cool environment and in the same palette mixes the blue of the sea and the green of the trees.A little closer to the mouth of the Guadiana river, the beaches Praia da Fábrica and Praia de Santo António have the advantage of being closer to the town. There are still more, however, to tempt the visitor. The Praia da Manta Rota, surrounded by spectacular dunes, continues for as far as the eye can see and encourages relaxed strolling by the shore where the sleepy waves are never enough to disturb but only make a swim that much more enjoyable. The Praia de Cacela Velha, located on the very begining of the Ria Formosa, is also part of this long of sand and can be reached by boat. It is a magical site, surrounded on one side by the long channel of the river and by the infinite ocean on the other. The fishing boats move slowly and purposefully as the fishermen, using old methods, tend the beds of cockles and oysters that can be enjoyed later on.It goes without saying that the beaches have all the necessary infrastructures, the security of lifeguards, and cafes in which to taste some of the local gastronomy or simply to take a cool drink and admire the warm tones of the sunset.

BEACH TOUR

BEACHES

The Spray of the Waves

The coastline of Vila Real de Santo António stretches for more than 16 km of almost continuous beach, but by one of those delightful tricks of nature, each beach has its own special something, that none of the others have. At just a rock throw away from the city centre are the Praia de Santo António and the Praia da Fábrica. Then the long beach of Monte Gordo begins, where the resin-filled air of the pine forest blends with the salt from the sea, and gentle waves lap the colourful boats of the local fishermen. Then you get to Manta Rota with its mysterious dunes, and the magic of the narrow cordon of fine white sand of Cacela, which you can get to by boat. Places that make you feel as if you were in paradise.

Between the Sea and the River Guadiana

Bastion of the frontier, bridging the Algarve and Andalusia, land of sailors and fishermen, Vila Real de Santo António looks towards both the sea and to the Guadiana river. The beautiful strip of its riverfront gives access to a recreation port where there is space for 358 boats, a floating quay accessible via two bridges and other relevant amenities creating optimal conditions for staying in the area.

The port is used both by the boats and yachts that visit here and the ferries that cross the river to Spain. As the first, or last if heading east, port of the Algarve, cruises leave from here following the slow meanderings of the river on beautiful trips that can be extended as far as Mértola in the Alentejo region.

Canoeing, rowing, windsurfing, fishing or easy-going trips on the river bring those people to Vila Real de Santo António who enjoy the water and all kinds of nautical activities.

The exceptional weather conditions that the Algarve and VRSA are lucky enough to enjoy, provide the perfect setting for sports. There is nothing more natural therefore than to take advantage of these gifts of Nature, whether they come from the excellent weather or from the stunning landscape, and to have built a Sports Centre that today is a reference at European level, where international athletes from all Olympic disciplines come for training. The excellent conditions also attract professionals from tennis, football, rugby, volleyball and many other sports. The National Forest of the Maritime Dunes of Vila Real de Santo António provides an encompassing area of nature and 12km of paths have been laid out there, ideal for practising all kinds of sports but a wonderful opportunity too for those who want to stroll in a relaxed fashion and appreciate the native flora and fauna. On top of all this, there are 20km of beaches, 100m wide at low tide, and we have the perfect scenario to fulfil the Olympic motto, “faster, higher, stronger”. The exterior design of the sports centre arrests the eye with its bold and modern architecture. On the inside, the technological sophistication recreates ideal conditions for athletes, and makes the centre a true laboratory of champions. The Vila Real de Santo António sports park also includes the town’s Tennis Club.Golf is also much enjoyed here with two courses situated close to Cacela Velha. Both are eighteen hole, par 72 and measure, in the case of Quinta de Baixo, 6,016m and Quinta de Cima, 6,256m.For all of these reasons, Vila Real is proud to call itself the land of sport.

The golf courses of Vila Real de Santo António are surrounded by magnificent countryside. Between the blues of the Ria Formosa and the greens of the Nature Reserve of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, everything combines to make golfers feel that they are at a unique destination. The courses are all rooted in a concept of environmental conservation, where traditional species such as carob and olive trees form part of a harmonious whole, providing a unique stamp of authenticity. Their construction complies with international rules as far as water management and other technical requirements are concerned, in addition to being designed by one of the most respected constructors. The club houses, in turn, have a feel of informal luxury as meeting places for people from different cultures and where, in most cases, cuisine of the highest class can be enjoyed. It is in such a setting, where the values of nature are considered a major asset, that the game becomes even more captivating and attracts people to spend holidays here that are both relaxing and full of energy. FLAVOURS

Flavours of the Sea and Land

Those who know would say that you can’t really get to understand a people and its culture until you’ve tasted at least some of their food. The Algarve has a long and established gastronomic tradition that is also one of the richest in Portugal. Both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic pass by here and leave their influence on the Algarvians’ favourite cooking. For those who would like to try fresh dishes of tuna, caught here along the Algarve coast since the time when the Arabs built the almadravas, or buildings for processing the freshly caught fish, Vila Real de Santo António is the place to come. Try the traditional estupeta or the muxama (smoked tuna fillet). The Nature Reserves are a breeding ground for the tastiest crustaceans and molluscs, the sea is full of fish and the Rio Guadiana also contributes to this range of natural flavours. The “cataplana”, a shell-shaped copper vessel, retains the flavours of the food and is one of the hallmarks of the Algarve, in which the taste of clams from the sea blends with that of pork from the countryside.A trip into the interior reveals a very different cuisine and one tied to game and hunting as well as the meat from cattle raised in the area, often accompanied by local vegetables. The pastry is also based on fruits from the region with the almond trees grown here giving the small almond desserts, made into all kinds of shapes such as fruit, animals and often flowers, their wonderful fresh flavour.Figs are also often featured in traditional recipes, with their unique taste, a taste of the true Algarve.

Friendliness and Comfort

Finding a place to stay in the territory of Vila Real de Santo António that suits individual needs and tastes is easy. The accommodation available in Monte Gordo offers the entire range of hotel styles, options and price ranges. From traditional hotel establishments to comfortable aparthotels, the only difficulty is in the choosing.Rooms and residences are also available for

Paths of History

Vila Real de Santo António still retains the ambience of a city built from scratch during the Enlightenment, and in the historical centre of the city there are about a hundred houses constructed at that time that typify the perfectly aligned blocks of houses, with delicate wrought-iron work decorating the balconies. On the riverfront, there is a row of fine two-storey houses standing on the long avenue beside the Guadiana facing Spain, which are reflected in the waters of the river: the “Casa dos Folques”,

the former building of the canning company Ramirez, which was designed in 1926, and the Hotel Guadiana in the “art nouveau” style are two examples. And don’t forget the Manuel Cabanas Museum with the biggest collection of wood engravings in the country. A watchtower standing guard over the mouth of the river, the lighthouse stands alone, providing a spectacular landscape over the sea, the surrounding pine forest and the city, making it a perfect viewing point.

In Monte Gordo, the origins of the Church of Nossa Senhora das Dores are lost in time, but it is assumed that it is as old as the fishing village itself. Further inland in the municipality, the village of Santa Rita is full of traditional architecture, single-storey houses with decorated parapets. Because of its location in the parish of Vila Nova de Cacela, it enjoys a fine view over the whole municipality. There is nothing better than to bring this outing to an end on the top of the cliffs at Cacela Velha, enjoying nature at its finest.
