    Mainly Residents in the neighbourhood

    BACKGROUND

    Difficulty in engagement during events asenvironment is not conducive for in-depthdiscussion

    New volunteers lose interest as their needs arenot met and they are uncertain of expectationsof them

    INITIATIVES BY CLC

    CLC came up with the Volunteer Induction Programme,comprising a theory and practical workshop wherevolunteers are trained by BBEs committed Grassroots

    Leaders

    In the workshop, they learn about BBE Divisions

    grassroots organisations, history, structure, and moreimportantly, PAs mission and objectives in building and

    bridging communities in achieving One People, OneSingapore

    HOW DID WE ACTUALLY DO IT?

    Approach and recruit potential volunteers during eventsand house visits and through recommendations

    Record all the particulars of volunteers

    Plan and organise in-house Induction Programme every3-4 months

    With approval of the Adviser, CCC Chairman and CCMC

    Chairman, the Programme was named VIP in recognitionof the importance of volunteers who lend their helpinghands to grassroots work in BBE

    HOW DID WE ACTUALLY DO IT?

    VIP led by committed Grassroots Leaders with thesupport of the Constituency Office

    Programme conducted on weekends and we KISS

    Allow volunteers to share their areas of interest,strengths and weaknesses

    Trainees involved in event attachment gain practical

    experience in engaging residents and building socialcapital

    10-15 minutes AAR after each event

    CLC Initiatives:

    Event Attachment

    By observing how experienced Grassroots Leaders planand execute events, new volunteers can learn the basicskills

    While the new volunteers learn on the job, the

    Chairmen and staff can identify potential GrassrootsLeaders

    It also offers a valuable opportunity to discover hiddentalents so that they can contribute to the variouscommittees with their special expertise and know-how

    VIP 1st Cohort

    20 and 28 November 2010 3 hours per session

    24 volunteers registered for the programme

    5 Grassroots Leaders & 3 staff involved 7 Foreigners, 4 PRs &13 Singaporeans

    19 Females & 5 Males

    Ages ranged from 14 to 60 19 Chinese, 2 Indians & 3 Others

    25 families participated with parents and their children to have fun and tobond

    Residents interacted and new friendships were formed with neighbours

    Madam Halimah Yacob, MP for Jurong GRC and Adviser to Jurong GRCGROs was very impressed with the hardworking VIPs and was delightedwith the success of the inaugural airplane workshop

    The VIPs were encouraged to help further develop and improve the systemwith newer initiatives

    BBE volunteer pool has become more organised

    New volunteers are better managed and posted to theirdesired committees

    Chairmen have the opportunity to identify suitablecandidates for their committees

    It has widened outreach and deepened engagement

    NOBODY gets left out

    EVERYBODY of diverse interests from differentbackgrounds can come together on a common platformto develop strong bonds and lasting friendships
