Scripture Insights

Today’s readings for Palm Sunday highlight the resolve of God’s servant to fulfill his will. In the First Reading, the “servant” speaks. This is the third of four servant oracles in the Book of Isaiah. The servant goes unnamed, but he is de-picted as freely giving over his will to God. Here we are told that he did not refuse when God opened his ear to hear what a disciple needs to know, and he set his face like flint to do God’s will, knowing that God would not allow him to be put to shame. The Second Reading invites us to join our voices in praise of the Christ who emptied himself to take on the form of a slave and accept death on a cross. Because of his openness to God’s will, he is exalted above every other name in the universe, but Paul situates the hymn in an admonition, “Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus.” Thus, we are called to join our lives to the self-emptying of Christ. Today's Gospel recounts the story of Jesus’ pas-sion and death as told by Luke, beginning with the Passover meal that he shared with his disci-ples to his burial by Joseph of Arimathea. But his journey to death began much earlier in Luke’s Gospel account. In Luke 9:51, we are told, “When the days for his being taken up were ful-filled, he resolutely determined to journey to Je-rusalem.” Indeed, Jesus’ entire life was oriented to the Paschal Mystery, the process of dying and rising to new life. As his disciples, we are called to do the same. In the Gospel, how do we see Jesus’ resolve

to accomplish what God called him to do? When have you needed to set your face like

flint (First Reading)? Why? Ask God to open your heart to more deeply

ponder and give thanks for Christ’s self-emptying.

OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the

prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.

We come to you,

Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder

and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of

Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in

faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to

those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human

dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may

be a holy family.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Enter into the PASSION and GLO-RY of the LORD; do this in

memory of me; the King of glory comes; Glory and honor and praise to you, Son of David!

ST. PETER CLAVER HEALTH CORNER

AUTISM AWARENESS Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. Signs typically appear during early childhood and effect a child’s ability to communicate, and inter-act with others. There is no known single cause of autism, but increased awareness and early diag-nosis/intervention and access to appropriate ser-vices/supports lead to significantly improved out-comes.

Here are some signs to look for in the children in your life:

♦ Lack of or delay in spoken language; repeti-tive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects); little or no eye contact; lack of interest in peer rela-tionships; lack of spontaneous or make– be-lieve play; persistent fixation on parts of ob-jects.

A child on the Autism spectrum might display many of these behaviors or just a few, or many others besides the ones listed here. The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is applied based on analysis of all behaviors and their severity. If you think your child might have ASD or you think there could be a problem with the way your child plays, learns, speaks, or acts, contact your child’s doctor and share your concerns.
