Problems with Voting Machines Seen Across Brooklyn Board of Elections Used Twitter as Sounding Board

By Mary FrostBrooklyn Eagle

The New York City Board of Elections (BOE) was putting out fires all over the city on Tuesday as a number of the old mechanical lever-style voting machines failed to function properly on Prima-ry Day. Many of the problems oc-curred in Brooklyn.

When machines were not func-tioning, voters were told to use pa-per ballots. But some voters said they were turned away altogether.

BOE said there were 5,059 ma-chines set up throughout the bor-oughs on Tuesday. By mid-after-noon, roughly 200 incidents of machines not working were re-ported. BOE used Twitter as a complaint board, and directly re-sponded to reports of problems.

City Councilmember Jumaane Williams (D-Flatbush-East Flat-bush) reported a number of prob-lems at polling sites in Brooklyn, including the P.S. 235 Annex on Ditmas Avenue and at P.S. 269 on Nostrand Avenue — the busiest poll site in the district — where at one point all four of the machines were down. Williams also report-ed that the only voting booth at St. Therese Church on Troy Ave-nue was having problems.

All of the voting machines were out of order on Tuesday morning at Concord Village in Downtown Brooklyn, voters re-ported. State Sen. Daniel Squad-ron’s team also reported troubles at I.S. 71 in North Brooklyn. Squad-

ron spokesperson Amy Spitalnick told supporters early Tuesday af-ternoon, “We’re hearing that some voting machines may not be per-fectly adjusted. Make sure an `X’ appears next to Daniel’s name [for public advocate] when you pull the lever.”

One out of four machines was out of commission at Congre-gation Mount Sinai on Cadman Plaza East in Brooklyn Heights. DNAinfo.com reported that even Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota had problems voting at the synagogue, and had to use a paper ballot. DNAinfo also reported ma-chine troubles at P.S. 256, J.H.S. 142, and J.H.S. 257 in Park Slope.

Assemblywoman Joan Mill-man (52AD) reported machine problems at 240 Jay St. in Down-town Brooklyn. “Please send me-chanic,” she tweeted. She also re-ported one machine down at P.S. 32 on Hoyt Street in Boerum Hill.

Voter Jonathan Rosen com-plained, “[BOE] running 3rd world election. Every machine at Park Slope Armory broken.” In anoth-er tweet, he said, “Machines were out from 6 a.m. til I left at 9 a.m.” BOE responded directly to his com-plaint. “We apologize for any in-convenience. Our Executive Direc-tor and Director of Public Relations personally went to the site.” The machines were eventually fixed.

Michael Bascombe said that the voting machines were down at P.S. 219 on Clarkson Avenue and E. 94. Thomas Dollar reported a

broken machine at 100 Clermont Ave. in Brooklyn. “Levers wouldn’t pull, a vote for comptroller nearly undid my vote for mayor,” he said.

Jill Cornell reported that a ma-chine was broken at Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn. A card-board box “privacy booth” was erected, she said.

Personnel problems also plagued some polling sites. Vot-er Elana tweeted that there was no poll site coordinator at 4th Av-enue and 30th Street in Brooklyn “Never showed up!” Fellow vot-

er Abraham Riesman complained that he was told by the BOE rep-resentative he spoke to via tele-phone, “There are no primary elec-tions in your district today.

“I corrected her by pointing out that there are multiple city- and borough-wide primaries today and she said, ‘Ohhh, you’re right.’”

Campbell Brown said, “Just tried to vote and they don’t have my name. I’m registered and vot-ed at same place in last election. What’s up?” BOE responded, say-ing, “Vote via standby ballot. If you

are a regular voter your name IS in the system and your vote counts!”

Earlier in the day, it was re-ported that Democratic mayor-al candidate Anthony Weiner discovered that his name wasn’t listed on the voting rolls when he went to his polling place. A cam-paign staffer called BOE, which verified that Weiner is a regis-tered Democrat, and he was per-mitted to vote.

One of the more troubling complaints came from Robin C. McClary, who reported that “elec-tion inspectors” in Fort Greene on Adelphi Street were sitting right next to BOE staff and asking vot-ers their party affiliations. “That ain’t right,” she said, adding, “The young lady ID’ed herself as a GOP election inspector.”

McClary was advised by BOE, “Please speak with the coordina-tor at the site to discuss the Poll watchers inappropriate behavior.” In another tweet, she was told, “Workers in a Primary sometimes need to ask your party affiliation if they cannot find your name in the book.”

BOE officials received some praise for taking complaints via Twitter and responding to them live. State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) wrote, “Glad to see [BOE] using Twitter to catalog and respond to poll site problems.”

For those who can’t tweet, BOE advised, “You should be able to get through if you call 866-VOTE-NYC.”

Hinsch’s in Bay Ridge Reopens Yet AgainMarty: `If You Want the Real Thing, Come to Hinsch’s’

By Paula KatinasBrooklyn Eagle

For Marty Markowitz, accom-panying manager Lee Moudatsos to the dessert display case inside Mike’s Hinsch’s restaurant in Bay Ridge to look at the creamy confec-tions was a recipe for trouble.

“It’s like sending an alcoholic to a bar,” joked the food-loving bor-ough president.

Markowitz, who boasted “I know cheesecake,” came to Hinsch’s on Monday to take part in a ribbon-cut-ting ceremony marking the eatery’s grand reopening after a remodeling project.

Hinsch’s, a beloved southwest Brooklyn institution famous for its homemade ice cream and its old-fashioned egg creams, has been around since the late 1940s but has seen some troubling times in the past two years.

The restaurant, located at 8518 Fifth Ave., closed in 2011 when long-time owner John Logue retired, then reopened under new ownership. Ear-lier this year, however, the new own-ers announced they were selling the place amid rumors that they were having trouble attracting customers.

To the rescue came Mike Mou-datsos and his sons Lee and Tom. The Moudatsos family owns five diners on Staten Island and decid-ed to branch out into Brooklyn. They took over Hinsch’s, updated the menu to include dishes such as spinach-and-goat-cheese salad and shish kabob, and put together am-bitious plans to renovate the eat-ery. They decided to keep the name

Hinsch’s for historical value. The original name of the restau-

rant was Hinsch’s Confectionery, a nod to its role as an ice cream par-lor and candy store.

Mike’s Hinsch’s, as it’s now known, boasts a well-lit interior featuring red and silver booths and

large prints of photos of Bay Ridge taken in the 1940s. One print depicts the corner of Fifth Avenue and 86th Street, with a trolley car traveling past Hinsch’s. “We went for a retro style,” Tom Moudatsos said. Broth-ers Thomas and Lee Moudatsos run their father’s restaurants.

The restaurant remained open during the renovation.

Markowitz presented Mike Moudatsos with a proclamation to congratulate him and his family on the acquisition of Hinsch’s. “Staten Island was just a warmup. You’re in the major leagues now. Brooklyn is the foodie capital of America!” he told the owner.

But Markowitz also had a seri-ous point to make. “With all the fast food stuff around, it’s good to have something wholesome,” he said. “If you want the real thing, you come to Hinsch’s.”

US Rep. Michael Grimm (R-C-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Staten Is-land), who also attended the re-opening, said he is a frequent customer of Mike’s Place, an eat-

ery owned by the Moudatsos family that is located near his Staten Island district office. “I love the Greek lem-on soup. I order it every time I go there. And I go there a lot,” he told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

Small, family-owned business-es like Mike’s Hinsch’s are the back-bone of the city’s economy, said Grimm.

The restaurant is doing great businesses, said John Quaglione, deputy chief of staff to state Sena-tor Marty Golden. “I ate here yester-day morning. It was crowded! We almost had to wait for a table,” he said, adding that his spinach and feta cheese omelet was delicious.

For more information on the restaurant, call 1-855-446-7247 or vis-it www.ILoveHinschs.com.

BROOKLYN — On the brink of becoming involved in WWII in 1941 there were 19,750 movie theaters in the U.S., only 75of which were drive-ins. The New York City area already had theSunrise Drive-In on Long Island that was featuring Tin Pan Alleyon its screen Sept. 11. Average weekly attendance for the nationwas 85,000,000 with an average ticket price of 25 cents. The 10top stars at the box office, based on the Motion Picture Heraldpoll of exhibitors were in order: Mickey Rooney, Clark Gable,Abbott & Costello, Bob Hope, Spencer Tracy, Gene Autry, GaryCooper, Bette Davis, James Cagney and Judy Garland. Rita Hay-worth and Ronald Reagan were among the ten “stars of tomor-row.”

On September 11, 1941, Downtown Brooklyn’s four largestmovie cathedrals were still packing them in. No longer couldBrooklyn patrons see a feature, a newsreel, a cartoon, and com-ing attractions on the screen preceded or followed by a spectacu-lar stage show for a price we regard today as a mere pittance. In1941 Brooklyn movie fans had to settle for a double feature billinstead and sometimes the secondary film on the bill wasn’tworth sitting through. The Brooklyn Eagle’s September 11amusement page beckoned movie goers with Life Begins forAndy Hardy with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland at Loew’sMet, Fulton & Smith Streets. A companion feature was Red Skel-ton in Whistling in the Dark. Mickey Rooney was the star on themarquee of the theatre which was not far from his birthplace — atheatrical boarding house at 57 Willoughby Street. Fabian’s Foxat Flatbush & Nevins was holding over Here Comes Mr. Jordanand I Was a Prisoner on Devil’s Island. The RKOAlbee at Fulton & DeKalb was showing Citizen Kaneat popular prices (50 cents matinees; $1 evenings)just as it had been shown as a roadshow for $2 onBroadway. The Brooklyn Paramount at Flatbush &Dekalb offered Dive Bomber and Two in a Taxi.

Two movie palaces across the river still had stageshows with their movies. The Roxy had a “knock-out” musical on their screen — Sun Valley Serenade— and on the big stage a gala new revue which in-cluded the Roxyettes chorus line. The other famouschorus line, the Rockettes, were included in theMusic Hall’s stage show “Follow the Fleet,” whileon screen Bette Davis emoted in The Little Foxes. The fantastic Center Theatre, “America’s Only IceTheatre,” across the street from the Music Hall inRockefeller Center was featuring their musical ex-travaganza “It Happens On Ice.” Price of admission?50 cents to $1.50. Almost every theatre in New Yorkadvertised that they were carrying Franklin DelanoRoosevelt’s radio address on September 11 fromtheir stages at 10 pm.

He’d Rather Broadcast the NewsMANHATTAN — On the

evening of September 11, 1987,TV viewers watching CBS con-tinued watching a tennis matchat 6:30 p.m. instead of the famil-iar sight of Dan Rather comingon to anchor the CBS eveningnews. What they didn’t knowwas that Rather had stomped outof the studio in a tantrum whenthe sports event cut into his newstime.

Rather already had a growingreputation for controversy.

CBS News staffers blamedpart of the decline on CBSSports. In late spring, the NBAplay-offs preempted EveningNews broadcasts — presumably driving news hounds toswitch on to ABC or NBC.

At 6:32 p.m. Rather could not be found. Affiliate stationsposted “Please stand by” signs and hustled their own local an-chors before the cameras, or threw on “The NewlywedGame.” By the time Rather was retrieved from a nearby office, more than half the show’s average audience had tuned out.

In the week that followed, criticism of Rather’s tantrumpoured in. Anchor emeritus Walter Cronkite told a reporter, “Iwould have fired him. There’s no excuse for it.”

Chastened, Rather issued a written statement that stoppedjust short of an apology — which proved enough to save hisestimated $2.5 million-a-year job.

Review and Comment

Do Americans Love Their Dogs Too Much?

Every few years it seems there’s a new study that shows how smart dogs are. We’re familiar with guide dogs, but now some dogs have even been found to help patients better deal with epileptic seizures. And now comes undeniable evidence of just how intelligent dogs are: They have their own cable station.

DOGTV is available on Direct TV. Not programming about dogs for dog owners (the majority of whom would rather be called “parents” than “own-ers”). No, this is programming for “stay-at-home” dogs. DOGTV’s website says its pooch-friendly programming is “scientifically developed to stimu-late and comfort your dog” when left alone. DOGTV says its content helps dogs overcome stress, separation anxiety, and other behavioral problems.

As a sign of our evolutionary achievement, scientists point to how much leisure time we humans have. Dogs have obviously advanced far be-yond us. They’re born into a life of retirement while we spend most of our life working toward that goal. And they say the average dog’s IQ is only 10.

And now we have to work a bit more to pay for DOGTV – $4.99 per month. Which will actually be a bargain compared to what we pay for pet massage, spa days, acupuncture, doggie day care, pet sitters, and birthday gifts. Yes, 77 percent of us pet parents admit to buying our dogs birthday gifts. I guess that makes sense if 81 percent of us think of our dogs as full-fledged family members.

I have lived with dogs all my life, usually two at a time. I’m tempted sometimes to think of them as wayward children. But not tempted to treat them to birthday gifts, spa days, or gourmet meals. And as far as I can tell, they don’t seem to mind. They jump on me and lick my face every chance they get. But it seems many dogs fare better than their school-age family members when it comes to spending during tough economic times.

According to the National Retail Federation, back-to-school spending is expected to drop by 8 percent this year as people cite general economic un-certainty. But spending on pets as a share of household spending kept pace during the recession, according to a 2013 report by the Labor Department. And that’s not just because people’s pets still had to eat. In fact, food consti-tutes only a third of Americans’ annual expenditure on pets.

During the recession, spending on pets went up as a share of income while our charitable giving went down. And even though it has started to rise again, charitable giving is still a ways below its peak in 2007. That means there’s less money to help the most vulnerable Americans: those who have no homes, let alone their own cable channels.

According to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, it would take just $20 billion to end homelessness. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development spends almost $2 billion right now to ad-dress homelessness. So America only needs $18 billion more. Could some of it come from us pet parents deciding that maybe George the dog doesn’t need that new sweater? Or canceling that spa doggie treatment?

I’m not naïve enough to suggest that pet owners alone can end homeless-ness. But to the extent that we consider some of our spending on pets to be dis-cretionary, we can certainly find more money to give to charity. And I bet, if our dogs are as smart as we think they are, they would happily consider going with-out that jewel-studded collar – or new cable subscription – if it meant more people could sleep under a roof tonight. After all, what are best friends for?

Advocates Push for Childhood Cancer Research FundsBy Paula Katinas

Brooklyn Eagle

Chris King, holding his three-year-old daughter Cami in his arms, talked about how lucky his family is. “Things are looking up,” he said last week, as he stood in front of Saint Ephrem Catholic Church in Dyker Heights.

Little Cami, who was at this moment squirming in her father’s arms, had recently undergone a successful bone marrow trans-plant to treat her leukemia. “A bone marrow donor was found. She had the transplant and now she’s on the road to recovery,” King said.

King added that he wants oth-er families with children battling cancer to have the same oppor-tunity to get good news. He and Cami were two of the dozens of people who attended a press con-ference in front of the church held by U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm and leaders of the Francesco Loc-cisano Memorial Foundation. The foundation was founded by Ca-mille Loccisano, whose son Fran-cesco “Frankie” Loccisano died in 2007 at age 17 of cancer. Frankie was a student at Xaverian High School, a Catholic school for boys in Bay Ridge, when he died.

The organizers said they wanted to hold the press confer-ence to raise awareness of the need to increase funding into re-search for cures for pediatric can-cers and to emphasize the impor-tance of helping families coping with the heartbreak of pediatric cancer.

Loccisano called on congress to pass the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Reau-thorization Act, a bill that would expand research into childhood cancers and identify avenues to expand the development of drugs specifically aimed at treat-ing childhood cancers. The leg-islation would also identify and track incidents of childhood can-cer across the country to deter-mine if there are patterns.

Grimm (R-C-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Staten Island), who not-ed that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, said he would co-sponsor the bill. “Frankie realized that sometimes you need a helping hand,” Grimm said, calling the bill “good, com-mon sense legislation.”

In the war on cancer, “the stakes have never been higher,” Grimm said.

A large group of children at-tended the press conference with their parents. Looking at the kids standing behind him, Grimm said it’s vital that congress act now. “We have to do everything we can. Children are our future. The next president of the Unit-ed States could be standing right here,” he said.

The site for the press confer-ence was chosen because Frankie Loccisano attended church at St. Ephrem, his mother said. “My son was diagnosed at age 14. Yester-day, he would have been 23,” she said, noting that his birthday was the day before.

“We need to stop cancer. Chil-

dren are really suffering,” Locci-sano said, adding that kids have had to undergo amputations and other invasive procedures during cancer treatment. “They lose their limbs. They lose their eye-sight. We need less invasive treat-

ments,” she said. “With research, we can cure the children,” she added.

The Loccisano Foundation of-fers assistance to families whose children have cancer.

There is a disparity in the

amount of funding for cancer re-search for adults and children, ac-cording to Grimm, who said there is a lot more money spent on re-searching cures for cancers that strike adults than there is for can-cers that strike children.

Chilrden and members of the Francesco Loccisano Memorial Foundation urge congress to pass a bill to fund cancer research. Eagle photo by Paula Katinas

Brooklynite’s Poignant Novel Depicts Teen Coping with Loss

By Samantha SamelBrooklyn Eagle

Brooklyn-based author Avra Wing earned critical acclaim with her first novel, “Angie, I Says,” which was made into the movie “Angie” starring Geena Davis and James Gandolfini. In her second novel, “After Isaac”, published this past June by Olinville Press, she again wins the hearts of her readers. “After Isaac” tells the sto-ry of Brooklynite Aaron Saturn, an emotionally stunted 16-year-old who is stifled by his grief over the death of his younger brother, Isaac.

Wing captures Aaron’s heartbreak with an astute del-icacy. “As many times as I go over it, it’ll never make any sense,” Aaron recalls toward the beginning of the book, reflecting on the day his brother passed away. “What did we talk about on the train going home? Why can’t I re-member? I think we went into Video Forum…Isaac had pretty good taste in movies for a kid. He was just getting into Hitchcock.”

Aaron goes on to replay the day’s events, agonizing over each detail, and finally, wondering, “Had he cried out? Did I sleep through it?” Isaac’s heart had stopped in the middle of the night. “Could I have done something to save him?

Everybody told me it must have happened very fast and quietly, no way I would have heard something, no chance to help. Still, there were times I couldn’t stop think-ing about it, telling myself it was my fault,” Aaron mourns.

Trapped in his sadness, Aaron seeks an escape. When he meets Kim, a teenage girl living on the streets of Manhattan’s East Village, he is hopeful that he’s found a way out of his gloom. But when his parents share with him a new plan that will alter their family, Aaron’s life seems to further unravel. Alongside his girl-friend, Emma, and his best friend, Sam, Aaron comes to realize that running away will not help him in the long run. As he works through his tragic past and attempts to cope with what the future will bring, he must learn to let people in – and let love trickle back into his life.

Everything matters. In real estate, it’s all about ap-pearance and curb appeal. This applies to your agent and your property. As the saying goes, there is no sec-ond chance to make a first impression. We decide im-mediately – within seven seconds of initial contact – how we feel about a person or piece of real estate. We can’t help it; our brains are hardwired to compute first and lasting impressions this way.

To make the best possible seven-second impact on others, personally and when trading real estate, the name of the game is to dress for success. This can lead to the next step: creating new opportunities.

The way I present myself on the outside, like curb appeal for a Brooklyn brownstone or a post-war multi-unit apartment building, is important in doing my job. So is body language and demeanor. Everything from clothing and accessories, to hair and make-up (or lack thereof) merges to make that lasting impact on others. Smell matters, too. Who wants to work with an agent with bad breath, or go for a showing in a condo that reeks of something dead?

Whether we agree with this or not, it’s the real deal. Presentation. Granted this means different things in different places. Take business attire, for example. The definition varies as widely as the types of properties on the market in New York and beyond. From brown-stones and vertical apartment living in the East to ranch-style houses and bungalows in the West – and ev-erything in between – properties and people are differ-ent. We dress, speak and live differently. However, we all operate the same when it comes to the seven-second first impression.

I get it, and try my best to look appropriate and pre-sentable as often as possible. The challenge for me is that my world is a small Brooklyn footprint. I certainly venture beyond the borders, but everyday life is most-ly contained in the Heights. My commute to work re-quires crossing one street. It is always possible I’ll bump into a colleague, client, neighbor or friend when I’m out. Gone are the days of running around in my work-out clothes and bad hair for the entire day.

Dressing for success is now a routine, regardless of what day of the week it is. I’m always mindful that ap-pearances matter, and to succeed I must look the part. Just like the curb appeal of our listings is imperative to attract buyers. Everything matters.

On the RunI enjoy going to open houses and private showings.

Checking out real estate is fun. Empty apartments al-low the imagination to flourish with decorating and ar-ranging possibilities. Occupied spaces provide the op-portunity to approve the furnishings, configuration and use of space. Or not. From a small college dorm room to an expansive mansion, the occupants always leave a personal mark on their place.

The way we live and “dress” our home says a lot about who we are. Tidy and orderly, dirty and sloppy, cluttered or minimalist, homey or modern, all appeal to different individuals. It’s that special something we all cherish that, at the end of the day, makes a house our home. For me, my pets and artwork make my home personal. I’m curious to learn from you; what makes a house your home? Share your thoughts with me.

Harbor Defense Museum Reopens at Fort Hamilton

By Paula KatinasBrooklyn Eagle

The U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Ham-ilton is steeped in history. Located on Brooklyn’s southwest waterfront in Bay Ridge, the fort was built in 1825, when the U.S. was still a young nation. The famous names that have served there through-out its history include Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.

The fort, the only active military base in New York City, is interested in preserv-ing its history, according to Col. Eluyn Gines, the commanding officer. Gines wel-comed elected officials, community lead-ers, and veterans to a ribbon-cutting cere-mony on Sept. 5 to mark the reopening of the Harbor Defense Museum, a one-story building on the fort’s grounds housing a treasure trove of historical items.

The museum, housed in Building No. 230 on the fort, had been closed for several months for a $1.3 million renovation proj-ect. The work included waterproofing the building’s roof and masonry walls and in-stalling a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

The reopening marked the beginning of a new era, Gines said. “This is a special event Fort Hamilton and for our commu-nity,” he said.

“The passion for history and the com-mitment to preservation are alive and well at the Fort Hamilton Garrison,” said Rich-ard Cox, the museum’s director.

Founded in 1980, the Harbor Defense Museum is the only army museum in New York City. The exhibits include uni-forms from the Revolutionary War, ma-

chine guns and ammunition from World War II, a fragment of the World Trade Cen-ter, a Civil war-era muzzle fragment from a Confederate soldier, and an engraved tro-phy cup that was presented to the Nation-al Guard of the 27th Regiment in New York in 1839.

The museum is located in the garri-son’s caponier, a freestanding structure within a moat that was built in the 19th Century and was designed to defend the

fort from attacks coming from New York Harbor.

The Lonely Planet guide for travelers lists the museum among its places to vis-it in New York, praising its “small treasure trove of artifacts.

The building is open for visitors Mon-day through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on the first Saturday of the month. Ad-mission is free. For more information, call 718-630-4349.

Visitors inspect one of the museum’s exhibits on opening day. Eagle photo by Paula Katinas Daily coverage of Brooklyn writers, books and book events can be foundin print (Brooklyn Daily Eagle) andonline (brooklyneagle.com) and a dedicated blog, www.brooklynbookbeat.com

SportsKidd Receives Ultimate Honor from Nets

Brooklyn’s Head Coach To Have His No. 5 Raised to RaftersBy John Torenli

Sports EditorBrooklyn Eagle

Jason Kidd, the greatest play-er in New Jersey Nets history and Brooklyn’s newly hired first-year coach, will receive the ultimate honor next month when our bor-ough’s NBA franchise raises his No. 5 to the rafters of the Barclays Center.

“This is a very humbling hon-or and one that I will always cher-ish,” gushed Kidd, who spearhead-ed the then-New Jersey Nets to their only two NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003.

The Nets, entering their second

full season in Brooklyn, will hold a special pregame ceremony for Kidd’s jersey retirement in advance of their Oct. 17 exhibition contest against the two-time defending world champion Miami Heat on the corners of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues. The game will be national-ly televised on TNT and locally on the Nets’ YES Network.

Kidd, who was hired this offsea-son to help the Nets reach their ul-timate goal of capturing their first NBA crown after a surefire 19-year Hall of Fame career on the hard-wood, will become just the sixth player in franchise history to have

his number retired. The 40-year-old San Francisco

native will join Drazen Petrovic (#3), “Super” John Williamson (#23), Bill Melchionni (#25), Julius “Dr. J” Er-ving (#32) and Charles “Buck” Wil-liams (#52), who was the most re-cent honoree in April, 1999.

“My warmest congratulations to Jason as we commemorate his outstanding career as an NBA player and his unparalleled contribution to the Nets franchise,” Nets Princi-pal Owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a team-issued statement. “As one chapter closes, another will soon be written, and I know that we are all looking forward to Jason’s contin-ued successes.”

The Nets’ team captain and un-disputed floor leader from 2001-08, Kidd guided the Nets to six straight

playoff appearances, including two Eastern Conference crowns and four Atlantic Division titles.

Though the Nets lost in the Fi-nals to the Los Angeles Lakers (2002) and San Antonio Spurs (2003), re-spectively, Kidd was the player most responsible for the team’s halcy-on days during that era, and hopes to be the one to lead them back to championship-contender status as head coach.

“This honor is richly deserved,” Nets General Manager Billy King said of Kidd’s jersey retirement. “Jason is firmly established in the Nets’ record books as the greatest player in the team’s NBA history, and the retirement of his #5 is a fit-ting conclusion to his legacy as a Nets’ player.”

Kidd ranks second all-time in

NBA history in assists (12,091) and steals (2,684). He also captured an NBA title in 2011 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, as well as two Olympic Gold medals (2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing) with Team USA.

Now, the former 10-time NBA All-Star will turn his attention to fulfilling Prokhorov’s mandate of delivering a major pro sports ti-tle to Brooklyn for the first time since 1955, when the Dodgers edged the Yankees in seven games in the World Series.

“There can be no greater recog-nition of an athlete’s time with any team than to have his number re-tired,” Kidd added. “And this gesture by the Nets organization validates a very significant portion of my ca-reer that was spent as a player with this franchise.”

Tavares Leads Isles into BrooklynNewly Named Captain To Skate at Barclays on Thursday

The soon-to-be Brooklyn Is-landers will be at the Barclays Cen-ter on Thursday for a training camp workout at the state-of-the-art are-na, which will play host to our bor-ough’s first NHL game on Sept. 21, when the Isles host the New Jersey Devils for an exhibition contest.

And leading the Isles on to the ice for their first skate in their fu-ture full-time home will be newly minted captain John Tavares.

The 22-year-old Hart Trophy fi-nalist was named New York’s 14th captain on Monday.

“It’s obviously one heck of an honor to be named captain of the New York Islanders, to have the re-spect of your teammates, the orga-nization, our great fans and every-one involved with the club,” Tavares

said on the team’s website. “There have been so many great past cap-tains and obviously the last two

[Doug Weight and Mark Streit] have meant a lot to me.

“Hopefully I can carry the team

in a way they did and learn from the great friendships that I have with them.”

General manager Garth Snow, who will also be in Brooklyn for Thursday’s workout, decided it was time for Tavares to assume a bigger leadership role on a team that qual-ified for the playoffs for the first time since 2007 this past season be-fore bowing out in six tough games to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“He’s a top player in the league, but he has a grinder’s mentality when it comes to work ethic and practicing the right way,” Snow said. “He’s a great leader and de-serves to be the 14th captain in Is-landers history.”

The Islanders are scheduled to begin their first full season Down-town in 2015-16. But there are al-ready rumors that they might arrive in Brooklyn in time for the 2014-15

campaign, if, of course, the Barclays can complete renovations to ex-pand its seating capacity for hock-ey by then.

Tavares, signed until at least the 2017-18 campaign, figures to be the face of the franchise for many years to come.

Brooklynites will doubtlessly gobble up his No. 91 jersey once the team arrives here.

Only now, it will have a “C” em-blazoned above the team’s logo.

“I don’t think being named cap-tain is going to change a whole lot, but it’s a great honor,” Tavares said. “We certainly have the opportunity to build on last season’s strong per-formance. It’s up to us to prove our-selves, and it’s not going to get any easier for us this year. What we’ve accomplished so far doesn’t mean anything unless we can take advan-tage of what’s ahead of us.”

The Nets’ new coach will be honored for his playing days prior to a nationally televised game against the Miami Heat.

Newly named captain John Tavares will be skating Downtown Thursday.

Cop-Killer Ronell WilsonGets Death Sentence

By Tom HaysAssociated Press

A former New York City street gang member, after asking for forgiveness, was sentenced todeath by lethal injection Tuesday in the execu-tion-style slayings of two police officers in a2003 gun sting that turned to tragedy.

“I’d like to leave on this note: To error ishuman, to forgive is divine,” Ronell Wilson saidin Brooklyn federal court, slightly misstating theaphorism.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis formallyimposed the sentence after a jury decided at a retri-al that Wilson should receive the death penalty.

The judge called the killing of undercoverofficers James Nemorin and Rodney Andrews“one of the most grisly and horrific crimes thecity has ever seen.” Wilson proved he wasremorseless by repeatedly acting out behind barsafter winning an appeal, he added.

In February, authorities revealed Wilsonfathered a child with a jail guard at theMetropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. She’s since pleaded guilty to an illegal sex act. Inhis remarks Tuesday, Garaufis called on federalofficials to investigate the security breaches.

Wilson, 31, “was permitted to treat the MDCas his own fiefdom,” the judge said. Aspokesman for the Bureau of Prisons declined tocomment.

In 2007, another jury sentenced Wilson todeath, making him the first federal defendant toreceive a death sentence in New York City sincethe 1950s. But an appeals court threw out thesentence in 2010 because of an error in juryinstructions and prosecutors chose to repeat thepenalty phase rather than let Wilson serve anautomatic life term without parole.

The new jurors, though not deciding Wilson’sguilt, once again heard about how the victimswere posing as illegal gun buyers. The pair metwith Wilson, known then by the nickname“Rated R,” for what they thought was a deal tobuy a Tec-9 submachine gun. But Wilson decid-ed to rob them instead and ended up shootingthem after one pleaded for his life.

Prosecutors cited a scrap of paper Wilson wascarrying when he was arrested as proof he was acold-blooded killer. It had a version of rap lyricssaying that if he was ever crossed, he would put“45 slogs in da back of ya head” and “ain’t goinstop to Im dead.”

The government also argued that Wilson’sconduct behind bars, including his affair with thejail guard and threatening a gay inmate, madehim a bad candidate for a life term.

The defense conceded Wilson had committed

a horrible crime, but sought to focus jurors on hisbackground as the product of a crack-addictedmother living with a dozen relatives crammedinto an apartment at a crime-infested housingproject. They said Tuesday that they wouldappeal the death sentence.

“Wilson’s death sentence marks the end of a10-year odyssey in the relentless pursuit of jus-tice,” stated United States Attorney Loretta E.Lynch. “This sentence follows the recommenda-tion of a jury of Wilson’s peers that justicerequires the imposition of the ultimate punish-ment for the vicious and senseless murder of twohusbands, two fathers and two protectors of theCity of New York.

“With this sentence, we can only hope that thefamilies of New York City Police DetectivesAndrews and Nemorin will take some comfort inits finality.”

NYC Property SoughtIn Russian Fraud Case

By Tom HaysAssociated Press

U.S. authorities announced Tuesday thatthey are seeking forfeiture of priceyManhattan real estate linked to a fraud theysay was uncovered by a whistleblowingRussian lawyer before he died behind bars.

A civil forfeiture complaint filed againstthe assets of a Cyprus-based real estate cor-poration and other holding companies allegesthat some of the proceeds from the $230 mil-lion tax fraud in Russia were launderedthrough the purchase of four luxury condo-miniums located in a Wall Street doormanbuilding and two commercial spaces in primelocations in midtown and Chelsea.

“Today’s forfeiture action is a significantstep toward uncovering and unwinding acomplex money-laundering scheme arisingfrom a notorious foreign fraud,” U.S.Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.“While New York is a world financial capital,it is not a safe haven for criminals seeking tohide their loot, no matter how and where theirfraud took place.”

The whistleblower, Sergei Magnitsky, was a lawyer for U.S.-born British investorWilliam Browder. He alleged in 2008 thatorganized criminals colluded with corruptRussian Interior Ministry officials to claim afraudulent $230 million tax rebate after ille-gally seizing subsidiaries of Browder’sHermitage Capital investment company.

He subsequently was arrested on tax eva-sion charges and died in prison in November2009 of untreated pancreatitis at age 37. Hisdeath prompted widespread criticism fromhuman rights activists, and the Russian pres-idential human rights council found in 2011that he had been beaten and deliberatelydenied medical treatment.

Browder, who has campaigned to bringthose responsible for Magnitsky’s death tojustice, has claimed that one of the corrupttax officials bought luxury real estate inMoscow, Dubai and Montenegro and wiredmoney through her husband’s bank accountsworth $39 million.

“This is a dramatic escalation in the fightto hold accountable the people who killedSergei Magnitsky,” Browder said Tuesday inresponse to the U.S. forfeiture action. “Sincethe Russian government has tried to cover upSergei Magnitsky’s murder, the only chancefor justice has been outside of Russia.”

NY Effort To Reveal Pols’Law Clients Gains Support

By Michael GormleyAssociated Press

The unexpected request by New York’santi-corruption commission that state law-makers reveal their private law clients is bol-stered by the state Bar Association and thepractice in 20 other states that already requirethe disclosure to combat conflicts of interest.

Lawmakers have argued that disclosurewould violate attorney-client protections.

But the New York State Bar Associationsince 2011 has called for disclosure of mostclients who present a lawmaker with earnedincome of more than $10,000. The BarAssociation notes the names of client and leg-islator-lawyer already often are part of publiccourt records, just not collected in a placereadily seen by the public and ethicsenforcers.

“The public has an interest in knowingwhether a public official is profiting fromoffice,” the association’s 2011 Task Force onGovernment Ethics reported. “Corruptioncannot be addressed one prosecution at a time.Rather, sweeping changes in disclosurerequirements, criminal laws and enforcementprotocols, balanced against appropriate dueprocess and confidentiality concerns, mustprecede any serious effort to reform our stategovernment.”

Twenty other states require lawmakers toregularly divulge at least some of their privateclients from the legislators’ business, law andconsulting firms, according to the NationalConference of State Legislatures. They are

Alaska, California, Florida,Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas,Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi,North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma,Oregon, Pennsylvania, SouthCarolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia,Washington and Wisconsin.

Each state has exceptions.Ohio and Virginia, for exam-ple, focus on disclosure of law-makers’ clients who are lobby-ists, and most states set anincome level before a lawmak-er has to identify a client.

New York requires some client disclosuresbeginning this year, but only of new clientssince January and under several exceptions asa result of an ethics law approved in 2011.Lawmakers gave themselves a year to acceptor shed clients before clients would have to beidentified. The time lag also allowed lawmak-ers to retire from office before facing the newdisclosure, which several did in 2012.

A private letter from the Commission toInvestigate Public Corruption to lawmakers, firstreported by The Associated Press last week, requested lawmakers to disclose data for outsideemployment that paid over $20,000 in 2012, adescription of what work the lawmaker per-formed, how the wage or salary was determined, and “a list of your clients in any civil matters orin any publicly filed criminal matters.”

Among the legislators with outsideincome from law practices are SenateRepublican leader Dean Skelos, who made

as $250,000 last year, and AssemblySpeaker Sheldon Silver, who made up to$450,000, according to ethics disclosurerecords filed in July.

If lawmakers don’t comply, the commissioncould subpoena people and records, but thatcould set off a fight with lawmakers who havequestioned the authority of the commission cre-ated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo under the powerfulMoreland Act to investigate the Legislature, aseparate and equal branch of government.

“We will respond appropriately,” said ScottReif, spokesman for the Senate Republicans whoshare control of the Senate majority.

There was no immediate comment fromthe Assembly’s Democratic majority.

“It seems like a fishing expedition with noinkling of wrongdoing,” said Michael Fraser, spokesman for Assembly Republican leaderBrian Kolb, who isn’t a lawyer.

The commission had no immediate comment.
