Musings

Fellow NCC Painters,

We’re off to a great start in 2012. We had an excellent turnout at the January general meeting, and most people stayed to paint a fun watercolor taught by BJ. Members are enthusiastically signing up for committees and paint-ins. We celebrated the start of our Coral anniversary year with a birthday cake and presents, thanks to the Kirzls and Kathy Denneler.

We’ll be celebrating Christmas in July at the luncheon and all the seasons at Getaway, Our community service projects are moving along. I’m hoping all of our members plan to join in the fun!

And if you haven’t already taken advantage of the free dues this year, please remember to sign up. We'd love to see you at a meeting or other event. On a personal note, I’d like to thank the chapter for the lovely Zhostovo tray presented to me at the meeting. Marie’s brother brought it back from Russia! It was a complete surprise, and absolutely gorgeous. A lot of Zhostovo pieces are on a dark background, but this one is light, with beautifully decorated flowers and an intricate strokework border. I plan to display it over the mantel in my family room, and will be reminded of NCC every time I look at this treasure. Thank you so much! Kathy BacskayPresident

DAVID VERNON RUNNING FOR NCC BOARD MEMBER AT LARGE

David Vernon, a member of NCC and local Decorative Arts business owner, has been asked by the SDP nominating committee to run for the SDP Board as member at large for next year, and has accepted.

We congratulate David on his selection. He not only brings a fresh face and lots of enthusiasm for Decorative Painting, but also a solid background of years of business experience. We think he'll be a great addition to the Board and urge our members to support him.

The following is an excerpt from his letter announcing his candidacy.

“I know that I am fairly new to the industry but everything that I do and have done is to promote decorative painting and try to increase our industry presence. I was asked if I would run by the nominating committee and I accepted as I feel this is a perfect time to work with our chapters and members to build a bigger, stronger, and more responsive SDP. Hopefully, we can if we all work together. I will be representing the members and our painting friends if I am elected. I will use my years of experience (over 40) of business, fairness, marketing and Human Resources management to help bring about change throughout SDP. It is time, I think.” The voting, will be at next year's SDP Conference 2012. However, for those members that cannot attend the conference, there is an absentee ballot. in the latest issue of the DP. Please fill it out, submit it, and let your voice be heard

GET A WAY

The 2012 NCC Getaway will be Thursday, October 4 through Sunday October 7 at the Clarion Historic District hotel in Williamsburg, VA. The theme, “Celebrate the Seasons”, is being carried over from last year’s canceled Painters’ Holiday since so much of the planning and painting is already done. We hope you’ll decide to attend, and take advantage of the special pricing this year -- it’ll be a real bargain! Teachers, be thinking about what projects you’d like to teach. The next newsletter will have a form for submitting them, and information about hotel reservations.

The first committee meeting will be Sunday, February 26 at 2 p.m. at Peg Altemus’s house. Everyone is welcome to join the committee, even if you didn’t sign up at the January general meeting. Just show up! We need you! We’ll be deciding on a budget, selecting a menu for the Saturday dinner, discussing ideas for the raffle, and handing out pins and other items to paint. We won’t be painting anything at this meeting, so you don’t need your painting supplies. Also please eat beforehand, we’re keeping it simple by not having a pot luck for this meeting.

If you were on last year’s committee and still have pins, favors, and/or door prize items, please let Kathy and Bobbie know. Or better yet, if you’ve finished them, bring them to the meeting. We need to inventory what we have, and figure out whether to order more. If you have questions, email or call us.

See you on the 26th!

Bobbie Draves and Kathy Bacskay

Louise Frederick has had a very nasty bout with the flu and we hope she is on the mend soon. Please let me know if a card should be sent to one of our members. I will be away for March but I will have the computer and can be reached easily. I won’t know if you do not let me know.

Thanks Barbara Gloeckner

FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK

Folks, I am genuinely surprised. Membership dues are zero, nada, and so few of you have signed up.I realize that we have imposed a tough requirement - we are requesting that you paint something. We are painters aren't we?, and some of the painting will occur at chapter meetings. Not only is membership free, but we are offering some great deals on seminars, the luncheon, get-a-way, paint-ins, and more to come. Remember, if you fail to join, you don't get to share in the spend-down.

On the bright side, all of the committee chairs have been filled. However, there is plenty of room for committee members. As a committee member, you get in on the planning stages of an event, you influence what the Chapter does, and you get to work with other members. If you have ideas about how something should be done, join the relevant committee.

If you can't serve on a committee, then volunteer to teach a paint-in, or teach after a chapter meeting.

So make a belated New Year's resolution that you will get involved and help create a fun atmosphere in which to get together and paint.

Marie & John Choose well: Your choice is brief and yet endless.
