STUDENT DEVELOPMENT & ORIENTATION MIDWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY

Page 2: Volunteer Guide

With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you and your community.

Benefit #1: Volunteering connects you to others. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to an area. Volunteering also strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network, exposing you to people with common interests,

neighborhood resources and fun, fulfilling activities.

Benefit #2: Volunteering is good for your mind and body. Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence and self-esteem, along with increase your satisfaction in life. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplish-ment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. And the better you feel about your-self, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals.

Benefit #3: Volunteering can advance your career. If you are considering a new career, volunteering can help you get experience in your area of interest and meet people in the field. Even if you are not planning on changing careers, volunteering gives you the opportunity to prac-tice important skills used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, project planning, task management and organization.

Benefit #4: Volunteering brings excitement to your life. Volunteering is an exciting and easy way to explore your interests and passions. While doing volunteer work, you find meaningful and interesting can be a relaxing, energizing escape from your day-to-day routine of work, school or family commitments. Volunteering also provides you with renewed creativity, motivation and vision that can carry over into your personal and professional life.

If you are a faculty member and are interested or curious about integrating service with your course, we want to help. Contact the Office of Student Development and Orientation and we will set up a Service Learning project.

The greater Wichita Falls area has over 100 nonprofit organizations looking for volunteers. These organizations

range from working with children to crisis management.

Volunteer MSU works closely with the Nonprofit Center of Wichita Falls to serve as a medium for collegiate volunteers and the various nonprofit agencies in Wichita Falls.

If you would like to be contacted about future volunteering opportunities, sign up at www.orgsync.com/42228/forms/65594.

An excellent example of our students caring for the community, this award winning program develops an exclusive partnership with a non-profit organization in the Wichita Falls community. Each semester, one local organization is selected using student input and feedback. Once chosen, goals are set be-tween the university and the organization to maximize the benefit of the partnership, and ensure that our efforts are focused on serving those most in need. Numerous activities and philanthropic programs are organized to benefit the selected agency to provide a transformative experience for the organization and our students, faculty, and staff. Recent partnerships have included - Wichita Falls Big Brothers Big Sisters, North Texas Area United Way, Wichita Falls Area Food Bank and Wichita County Humane Society.

Volunteer Fair (Fall)

Students meet with MSU community partners and find a place to volunteer.

Alternative Spring Break (Spring)

Each year, a group of MSU students foregoes a traditional spring break of sandy beaches to serve a community in need. A truly transformative week, students often claim Alternative Spring Break to have been one of the best weeks of their college careers.

MLK Day of Service (Spring)

Participating students spend their “day off” performing service in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at various sites in the Wichita Falls area.

MSU Great Day of Service

With over 500 students participating each year, MSU Great Day of Service allows students an opportunity to volunteer in the community through teams or individual efforts. From animal shelters to non–profit agencies benefiting children, students remember MSU Great Day of Service as one of their fondest memories.

Student Development & Orientation hosts several events to give easy opportunities for students to serve their community. If you want to participate in any of the events listed below, let us know!
