Off-campus lunch pass policy changeFor the 2011–2012 school year, off-campus lunch passes will be available for parents’ signatures as early as May 2, through August 5, if students want to be off campus at the beginning of the school year. Any signed after August 5 will be delayed until processed at the start of school. Forms can be signed in the House Office or in the Activities Office.

H ere we are, getting ready to say good-bye to the Class of 2011 when it seems like only a few days ago we were registering

them for their last year at Samohi.With the successful completion of our WASC

(Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation process, Samohi has lots of impor-tant work to do. Specifically, our action plan includes the following goals:

Continue to provide, improve and expand academic support to our students who struggle the most.

Increase the enroll-ment of students from under-represented groups in Honors and Advanced Placement classes with successful completion results.

Design, implement and monitor a school-wide professional develop-ment plan that supports and promotes increased student achievement in and across disciplines.

In addition, Samohi will continue its commit-ment to excellence that characterizes our performing and visual arts programs. Our athletic program also continues to grow stronger, as almost all of our sports are dominant in league and most go quite deep in the post-season. Moving forward, Samohi is committed to provid-ing many different opportunities for students in which to engage and be part of the Viking experi-ence. Engagement equals success and we want as much of it as possible for all our students. Your suggestions and active involvement are always welcome.

A s I look back on the past academic school year, I am proud to be a member of this community and of the resiliency

we have shown.We have had remarkable peaks to celebrate

this year, including the victories of our extremely successful athletic teams and cheerleading squads, as well as our nationally recognized ROP teams and our winning Science Bowl students–who will compete in Dallas with the brightest students from all around the country. And let us not forget our music programs that continue to win awards on the national stage. The achieve-ments of our students have brought us joy and inspiration, as a community.

And we have had challenges. Our Samohi family suffered a tragedy this year and we joined together to support family and friends, and to focus attention on our most vulnerable students. Our counselors, advi-sors and teachers will continue to keep an increasingly watchful eye over our students. We also came together when informed that there was increased prescrip-tion drug use on our campus, becoming more informed about signs to watch for and ways to help our students. We grew stronger through adversity, as a community.

I have learned that we, as a community, can come together through the highs and lows that life throws at us, staying strong and positive for our families and most importantly, for our students. For that I am truly proud to be your PTSA President. I wish your students success in the rest of your academic year, a restful and productive summer and I look forward to seeing you in August when we register for the next year of our Samohi experience.

California Standards Tests (CSTs)These exams are given to all students in

grades 9–11 in the core subjects: English, Math, History and Science. The CSTs are scheduled Mon., May 16 through Fri., May 20. Each test is important! We encourage all students to be here on time, take the tests seriously and do their best. The score results are mailed home from the California Department of Education during the summer. The report gives students detailed information about their strengths and weaknesses and pinpoints areas to improve upon. Samohi’s API score is determined, in part, by how students score on the exam. The API is one of the biggest factors that colleges use to determine the strength of our program when making college acceptance decisions. Our goal is to break 800.

tion on bullying. In an effort to help the fight against bullying here are some helpful tips:

Summer School at Samohi

A s we wind down the school year, summer school is gearing up. Summer school will run from Wednesday, June 29, 2011 to

Friday, August 12, 2011. As it did last year, the summer school week will run Tuesday through Friday, with no classes held on Mondays. All classes are remedial.

There are no guarantees of course offerings or enrollment. Classes currently being considered for this summer for credit recovery are;n English 9–12

A s we head into the home stretch of a successful school year, S House would like to thank our parent volunteers who have

so generously given their support. Mr. Runyon wishes to thank all of your for the wonderful well wishes and resources given by so many families who helped to make his retirement party so great.

As the year draws to a close, please continue to help your child remain focused to maintain and improve on academic successes. I t is hard to believe that the end of this school year is just weeks away. O House would like to thank our parent volunteers for giving gener-

ously of their time and financial support to allow us to provide fun events and activities for our students. With the help of our O House Advisory students this year, we have had our wonderful house breakfast, a fun cookie decorating party, a successful winter gift drive which raised over $2,000 for twenty O House students, a teacher appreciation luncheon, an ice cream party, and a student recognition ceremony. Thank you for your support for all of these activities.

T he end of the year is fast approaching. While we would love to wind down, there is still much to do! Neglecting studies now

will lead to lower grades, which then leads to lost opportunities. Don’t let spring fever catch you. Your advisor can help you rekindle that motiva-tion and dedication to studies. If your grades have already slipped, you still have a few weeks to make positive changes.

A big thank you to the parents and students who made the H House Luau a success! It was a beautiful sight to see a field full of students with flower leis. We can’t wait for the next one!

We are also proud to report that the H House has t-shirts for the first time! We hope to have updated t-shirt designs each year. H House pride is visible on this campus!

A s another year begins to wind down, the iHouse staff would like to thank all of its parents and community members that

have supported our House and Samohi this year. We could not have hosted all the activities that we did without your generosity!!

The week of May 16 is when the CSTs will be given to all 9th through 11th graders. Again, please make sure your student is well rested, has a good breakfast, and is ready for their test each day. These tests are one indicator that lets the school know how well we are doing and how successful our students are in mastering the state content standards.

Finally, we want to wish all our iHouse Seniors congratulations on their upcoming graduation. We are so proud of all of them. We will be honor-ing them at the iHouse Senior Banquet on Thurs-day, June 2 from 6:30–8:00pm in the Library. Let’s finish as strong as we started and have a great end of the school year! Go Vikings!!

On a personal note, you may already know that starting July 1, 2011, I will be the new Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources at Lompoc Unified School District in Santa Barbara County. It has been my pleasure and distinct honor to serve the wonderful students of Santa Monica and work with a dedicated and profes-sional faculty and staff, as well as very supportive and hard-working parents and community. The many challenges have been opportunities and allowed accomplishments to become steps in the right direction. I know Samohi will continue on that path. The WASC accreditation affirmed that commitment in the most positive of terms and, undoubtedly, the pursuit of excellence will always guide the fine work you all do.

No senior in the family? No problem. Grad Nite needs you!

I n 1991, the first on-site Grad Nite at Samohi was organized to keep our seniors safe on what is statistically the most dangerous night

of their young lives. The tradition continues, and you won’t want to miss out on all the fun! Many parents start volunteering for a Grad Nite shift when their children are freshmen. Here’s every-thing you need to know…

Q: What is Grad Nite exactly?A: Grad Nite is an all-night party held at Samohi on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, from 9:30pm. to 5:30am. The façade of a cruise ship stands in front of the tennis courts, which are tented and decorated to reflect the fantasy destination chosen by the senior class — the Greek Isles! Inside, students dance the night away to a DJ, play carnival games, serenade their friends in the karaoke lounge, gamble at casino tables, redeem their “winnings” at a prize booth, and participate in other surprise activities, with food and bever-ages provided all night long. Around 5:00 a.m. they receive their diplomas, a bag of goodies, and as the sun rises, the Class of 2011 departs after a safe and fabulous night!

Q: But I don’t have a senior. Why should I help?A: This event is huge! Over 150 volunteers are needed on Grad Nite (in two hour shifts), and even more are needed in the weeks before and the two–three days of clean up after the event. And it isamazingly fun for volunteers. Many people in our community continue to volunteer long after their children have left Samohi. This is your chance to sneak a peek at what goes on behind the scenes of these fantastic festivities, and make this night memorable for these accom-plished graduates! And don’t forget…when YOUR child is a senior, he or she will be dependant on parents from ALL the classes to pull off this incredible celebration.

Q: All right! I want to volunteer. What kind of help is needed?A: On Grad Nite itself you can run carnival games, check jackets and valuables in our

purser’s office, serve food, apply faux tattoos, help students create beaded jewelry, and hand out prizes. Jobs, like volunteer check in, are available behind the scenes for those who have seniors that don’t wish to see Mom or Dad at all. Shifts are 9:30pm–11:30pm, 11:30pm–1:30am, 1:30am–3:30am, and 3:30am–5:30am. Then tear down begins. Some folks do one shift, some do a couple, and some even stay all night!

Prior to the big night, creating the cruise ship requires volunteers who are handy with tools, or painting, and for those who have no particular skills, but are just willing to help on weekends. Come and join us next to the tennis courts for a few hours. Our big start day is Saturday, June 4th; this is when we need lots of hands on deck. We will continue to set up every Saturday and Sunday up to the event. If you are not available to work the event, you can still help by making a financial donation and/or donating prizes for the prize booth.

Q: Wow! How do I sign up? Can I bring a friend along?A: Lots of friends volunteer together! Spouses too! (Two years in a row I went with friends to a late movie, next went out to late night break-fast, and then volunteered with them at the 1:30–3:30 am Grad Nite shift.) It’s a great way to catch up with parents you knew since your kids were in elementary school together! You might, however, get a bit emotional when you reminisce, or tear up a little when you see graduates you have known since kindergarten.

Sign-ups are super easy online. Electronic slots will be filled quickly so don’t delay! (If you have a graduate and plan on dinner that night, please do not sign-up for the first shift.) The Grad Nite volunteer sign-up page is avail-able through a link on the Samohi Website Home Page.

Grad Nite creates lasting memories for our graduates. Please choose to be involved in this great Samohi tradition!

Cheers to parents of seniors!

A s our senior class graduates, we congratu-late them and wish them all the best on their new journeys. We are excited

about what is ahead for them, and we already miss them. At the same time, we are seeing the “graduation” of their parents — many committed and active members of PTSA who have given so much of themselves to the Samohi community. Congratulations to the Ocean Sciences Bowl team!

T wo seniors, Madeleine Youngs and Zack Gold, and two juniors, Dana Ritchie & Mari LeGagnoux, won this year’s South-

ern California Ocean Region Science Bowl (Surf Bowl) for Samohi — defeating 20 other teams. As the First Place team, they next compete for the national title in Galveston, Texas, this April. One of Samohi’s “Acadeca” competition teams, these four have distinguished themselves and their school. With confidence and camaraderie born of long hours of study and practice, they fully plan to raise that distinction to the national level in Galveston. When asked about the key to their success, Mari LeGagnoux praised her teammates and the team’s teacher, Mr. Gaida, adding, “Each one of us takes this very seriously, but we also have a lot of fun with it. When you enjoy what you’re working at, you can’t help but succeed.” We all wish these emissaries of knowledge the best in their quest for binging home the national title for Samohi.

M ath Department Chair, Mr. Geoffrey Tipper is leaving Samohi after years of inspiration and support to our students

and staff. We extend our appreciation to him as we bid him farewell! His colleague, Mr. Kelly Okla, has this to say:

“I am heartbroken at such a loss. He is leaving a void that is near impossible to fill. Geoff is my colleague, my friend, my brother. I am lucky to have worked with him these past years. I wish you, Jackie, and Kyra all the best as you move forward. You’ll always be my brother.”


Winter round-up : Go Samohi sports!

G irls’ Water Polo was lead by Coach Matt Flanders. They ended up in the second round of CIF and 3rd in league. The future

looks bright for the Vikings, with the return-ing players learning quickly and having both a great attitude and an outstanding work ethic. Individual awards included MVP: Lauren Nadel (SR), Most Improved Rachel Alvarez-Zakson (SO), Most Inspirational Joyti Uppal (SR). First Team All CIF: Lauren Nadel (SR), First Team All League: Lauren Nadel (SR), Aleya Spielman (JR), Second Team All League: Felle Baumgarten (JR) and Rachel Alvarez-Zakson (SO).

Girls’ BasketballThe much heralded girls basketball team

ended a season by playing on the national stage, in the second round of the CIF state playoffs. The Vikings fell short in a 57–41 loss to Mater Dei, the #1 team in the country. The Vikings played many Top Ten teams in the state and the nation, in Marty Verdugo’s last season as head basketball coach. The highlight was the victory over highly ranked Long Beach Poly in the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs, in the final seconds of the game. Congratulations to Moriah Faulk (UCLA), Kristina Johnson and Bianka Balthazar, who are off to NCAA Div. I schools next year. Samohi is grateful to Coach Verdugo and his staff for the level of excellence they have established against the best teams in CIF.

Boys’ SoccerIn Soccer news, The Samohi boy’s soccer team

claimed the Ocean League title, and reached the quarter finals of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Div. IV playoffs. There were the Number 1 seed, before being upset in the cold, rain, windy town of Hesperia, by Oak Hills High. Coach Serafin Rodriguez and his staff look forward to an even more amazing year in 2012.

Boys’ BasketballIn boys basketball, Coach Hecht’s team started

the year rough, but rebounded to stage a furious finish to the season. They qualified for the CIF playoffs, and traveled to Upland High School. They were up by 7 in the third quarter, but eventually succumbed to Upland, in an away game for the first round of the CIF playoffs. Coach Hecht expressed deep appreciation for the exit-ing seniors. He also stated that “…we’re excited about the guys we have returning who have a lot of varsity game experience.” His team was made up of mostly underclassmen, who will no doubt take advantage of their CIF experience in 2011.

Girls’ SoccerGirls Soccer ended up capturing the league

title and defeated Malibu High in a rare intra district Div. IV CIF playoff game, played at John Adams High. The Vikings defeated Malibu 5–1, and then played one of the toughest games of the year against Ramona Convent. Though Coach Jimmy Chapman’s Vikings fell short 2–1, they displayed an aggressive and amazing level of soccer play all year. The Vikings were led by NCAA Div. I-bound Lizzy Lyons and Julia Glanz.

WrestlingThe Samohi Grapplers finished their season

under the direction of Coach Mark Black. Wres-tler Jessica Walker made it to the State Finals, in what proved to be a memorable CIF run. She battled Julia Jenkins, a junior out of Albany High. As a sophomore, her runner-up position in the finals sends woe to all of her future opponents.

VolleyballCongratulations to Coach Liane Sato, Gary Sato

and Eric Sato, for being inducted into the Santa Monica College Sports Hall of Fame. Her Olympic glory in volleyball, and her leadership within our volleyball program, makes her and her staff one of the premier coaching staffs in CIF.

Much appreciation to all who supported our student-athletes in their athletic journey. Your kind words, attendance and actions have helped Samohi student-athletes write their own chapter to our gloried history. Any services you can offer, computer programming, photography, painting, construction, glass, etc., are always more than welcome. In-kind donations also go a long way in helping making the high school experience a memorable one for the Samohi sports commu-nity. A big thank you to all who have been a part of the 2010–2011 sports scene.

Congratulations All-CIF players!

M ichigan-bound senior Lauren Nadel made the All-CIF Southern Section Div. VI girls water polo team, after lead-

ing the Vikings with 63 goals, 17 assists and 64 steals in the 2010–11 winter season. She scored four or more goals in a game on 10 occasions, including a season-high 10 goals in a 13–6 victory over Yorba Linda.

In girls basketball, senior Moriah Faulk, who has signed with UCLA, made the team in CIF All-Southern Section Div. 1AA, after leading the Vikings with 13.7 points per game. In boys’ soccer, senior midfielder Trevor Kovacs made the Div. IV squad. In girls’ soccer, University of Arizona-bound senior midfielder Julia Glanz made the Div. IV team after tallying 29 goals and eight assists for the Vikings.

ROP honors

A big congratulations to the ROP Outstand-ing Student of the Year nominees and to Samohi’s top five finalists who will be

going on to the County to compete with 22 other school districts: Nicole Andrews in Film/Video Production, Alexander Chaban and David Xiao for Digital Design, Tanya Choo for Virtual Busi-ness, and Giovanni Jimenez for Auto Technology!

ROP’s Business classes stole the show last month at the UCLA Business Plan Competition, taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Then Virtual Business and DECA students travelled to Oakland where they took 1st and 4th place in the Business Plan Presentations… way to go!

I t’s been a triumphant end of year for the Samohi visual and performing arts. With top-level awards for our musicians, and perfor-

mance treats coming up for our audiences, this season is going out with a bang!

Concert for the ArtsOn March 7, performers America, Rich-

ard Page of Mr. Mister, and Venice (the band) welcomed surprise guest David Crosby for a sensational concert in Barnum Hall featuring members of the Samohi Choir and Orchestra. Stairway was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, where nearly 1000 student performers presented pieces ranging from traditional folk tunes to classical masterpieces to contemporary film scores with projected footage. The standing ovations and thunderous applause from the audience attested to the quality of the district’s music program — one of the most admired in the state.

Samohi Choral Program students Kian Nozari, May Claire La Plante, Christina Lammell and Isaac Nemzer qualified to compete in the Southern California Vocal Association annual solo competition. Twenty Samohi students were chosen from over 200 from high schools around the region — one of the largest representations from any single high school.

Two of our soloists received special recogni-tion; Christina Lammel placed 5th in the overall competition and Isaac Nemzer was awarded the most promising young underclassman singer.

Samohi ‘s Band Program hosted the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Associa-tion (SCSBOA) Festival in Barnum Hall on March 23 and 24. And all of the participating Samohi bands and orchestra groups were rated Superior (the highest rating) in overall performance.

The 62nd annual Kiwanis Instrumental Music Scholarship Finals will be held Tuesday, May 31, in Barnum Hall.

Samohi’s Winterguard has had their “best ever” season, taking home the silver medal in their division at the WGASC (Winter Guard Asso-ciation of Southern California) Championships in

Orange County. Over 350 groups competed over the weekend at six different sites. The guard also made the finals competition at the Western US Regional Championships hosted by Winter Guard International, a first for the guard.

The Band Pops Concert takes place on Wednesday, June 8, at 7pm in Barnum Hall. It’s the final event of the year for all Concert Bands, and it’s a wonderful way to close the season.

Stop by Barnum Hall on May 24th at 7:00pm for the Samohi Orchestras’ annual Pops Concert — the last and one of the most popular orchestra concerts of the year.

This spring, Samohi’s Symphony Orchestra was the first orchestra invited to perform at Cali-fornia All State Music Educators Conference in Fresno. The Chamber Orchestra participated in the National Orchestra Festival in Kansas City and returned with a Superior Rating, and the chance to work with conductor Jung-Ho Pak.

Symphony and Chamber Orchestras also swept the awards at the Heritage Festival in March, winning the Instrumental Sweepstakes Award, given to the school with two or more instrumental groups with the highest points; the Outstanding Orchestra Group award; the

Adjudicator’s Award, given to Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra; the Maestro Award, recog-nizing individual musicians

Clara Lysy and Evan Kahn; and the Celebrate You Award,

won by Keonjik Lee.

The Samohi Advanced Jazz Band knocked it out of the park this year. In March, the Jazz Big Band and Combo, under the direction of Tom Whaley, competed at the 43rd Annual Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival in Boston — the largest high school jazz festival in the world.

Samohi swept the top awards at the festival with first place in the highest division, Divi-sion 1—Big Band and Division 1—Jazz Combo. In addition, two of our Samohi students were chosen as the top soloists: Jake Noveck (guitar) won First Place for soloist in the Big Band portion, and Steven Gordon came in first in the soloist category for Jazz Combo. Eli Brown was received the “Outstanding Musicianship” award for his incredible work as the lead trumpet player.

Next up: Jazz4Japan on June 4 at 3pm in Barnum Hall. 50% of proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross—Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief. The remaining 50% of proceeds go to the Samohi Jazz program.

Rebuilding Samohi starts this summer!

S anta Monica High School has been part of Santa Monica’s downtown landscape atop Prospect Hill at 6th and Pico for the past

century. Constructed by taxpayer bond money in 1913, Samohi sits on 26 acres and has served as the only comprehensive public high school for the citizens of Santa Monica for over 120 years.

The time has come to rebuild Samohi for the next century, as the last new building (Language) was constructed over 40 years ago and the state of our campus reflects its age. For the past three years a site team comprised of district staff, school administrators, and teach-ers, along with students and parents, have been working together with architects and facilitators on the master plan for our campus. There are two active projects currently in development here at Samohi.

First, the Science and Technology Quad will break ground this summer (2011) with building completion targeted for Summer 2013. The construction zone will span the softball field and the north parking lot, which will be used for stag-ing and construction. A spectacular new Science and Technology Quad will be built on the current site of the softball field and parking lot. The impact of this construction to our students, staff, and community is of primary concern. Plans are underway with the City of Santa Monica to relo-cate the Samohi softball program and create a new parking plan for our staff and students who use the north lot each day.

Second, the Civic Center Joint Use Project (CCJUP) was funded by the Redevelopment Agency of the City of Santa Monica last year and will support new, state-of-the-art athletic facili-

ties on our campus. These facilities will be used by our school, shared on weekends and holidays with our community in a ‘joint use’ agreement. The scope, sequencing, and timing of these new facilities are in development now.

Just as our community did over 100 years ago, together we will set the vision for a new Santa Monica High School for the next century and beyond. State funding of public education in jeopardy

O n March 30, Governor Brown announced the collapse of negotiations to garner the four Republican votes needed to reach the

2/3rds threshold for budget approval and place an education funding measure on a special June statewide ballot. Without a successful June ballot measure, additional deep cuts in services in the range of $12 billion to close the state’s budget deficit for the next fiscal year are looming—on top of already-approved cuts of roughly the same amount in in the same time period. Governor Brown is exploring other means to enhance revenues and avoid the devastating impact on children and families. These cuts would be required if the State budget must be balanced solely through reduction in spending. Stay tuned.Emeritus honor goes to Haley Hill

H aley Hill, Samohi senior, is the first recipi-ent of the Emeritus College Bridges to the Future Scholarship Award. Emeritus

College created this award to recognize high school student involvement and collabora-tion with the Emeritus community. Ms. Hill was recognized for her participation with the Emeritus College Concert Band and her academic and extracurricular achievement at Samohi. She also received a $500 dollar scholarship from an Emeritus College anonymous donor who wished to recognize a high school student who volunteers, participates with or serves the Emeritus community. Emeritus College is a program of Santa Monica College for the Older Adult community. Established in 1975, Emeritus College serves over 3400 students per semester. The name Emeritus refers to people “retired with honor.”

Samohi students capture the heart of the YouTube nation

W hen senior Jason Pitts invites someone to a prom, he does it with style. The student musician wrote a song for his

intended date, Lianna Cohen. Then he and four pals (Sam Balfus, Ryan Odening, Kian Nozari, and Hanyu Chwe on shaker) strolled into Lianna’s journalism class and floored her with their surprise performance.

Meanwhile, the whole thing was captured on video and posted to YouTube, where the charm of Jason’s song and Lianna’s wonderful, stunned reaction took the nation by storm.

They were all flown to New York, where they appeared together on Good Morning America. And the viral video has passed a quarter million views.

PTSA Mini-Grants awarded to worthy projects

T he Samohi PTSA developed the Mini-Grant program in 2005 to assist faculty and students with financial support for

special projects. Applications are submitted to an advisory committee and awards are considered based on criteria that demonstrate both educa-tional value and impact on the Samohi commu-nity as a whole. Up to four programs are awarded $250 each semester.

This semester mini grants were awarded to the PE department to purchase 25 putters to implement a golf program in general PE; refer-ence books on nature & landscapes for Painting & AP Arts classes; a Flip Video camera & external hard drive for the making of Latin language films; and 35 copies of a Don Quixote reader (with a teacher’s edition) for Spanish 2 students.

Samohi. Con la conclusión con éxito del proceso de

acreditación, tenemos mucho trabajo importante que hacer. Específicamente nuestro plan de acción incluye las siguientes metas:

Continuar proveyendo, mejorando y expan-diendo el apoyo académico a nuestros estudiantes que luchan más.

Aumentar la inscrip-ción de grupos de estudiantes que están bajamente representa-dos en clases de Honor y Sito Avanzados (AP) que resulte en comple-tar con éxito.

Diseñar, implementar y supervisar un plan para el desarrollo profesional en toda la escuela y promover el aumento de los logros de los estudiantes en todas las disciplinas.

Además, continuaremos mejorando nuestro trabajo en las artes escénicas y visuales. Nuestro programa atlético también continúa creciendo fuertemente, ya que muchos de nuestros equipo han tenido mucho éxito este año. Casi todos los deportes son dominantes en la liga y la mayoría participaron mucho después de la temporada. Estamos comprometidos a proveerle a los estudiantes muchas diferentes oportunidades en las que puedan participar y ser parte la expe-riencia Viking. R eflexionando en este pasado año escolar, me siento orgullosa de ser miembro de esta comunidad y la resistencia que

hemos demostrado tener.Tenemos muchas cimas que celebrar este año,

incluyendo las victorias de nuestros extrema-damente victoriosos equipos de deportes y las cuadrillas de animadores, al igual que nuestro nacionalmente reconocido equipos de ROP y los estudiantes ganadores de la Copa de Ciencia-los cuales competirán en Dallas con los estudiantes más brillantes del país. No nos olvidemos de nuestro programa de música el cual continúa recibiendo premios en el escenario nacional. Los logros de nuestros estudiantes nos han traído alegría e inspi-ración, como comuni-dad.

Y hemos tenidos nuestros retos. Nuestra familia de Samohi sufrió una tragedia este año y nos juntamos para apoyar a las familias yamigos, y enfocar nues-tra atención a nuestros estudiantes más vulnerable. Nuestros consejeros y maestros continuarán vigilando a nuestros estudiantes. También nos juntamos cuando nos informaron que había un aumento en el uso de drogas recetadas en nuestra escuela y nos informa-mos en cómo identificar las señas y cómo ayudar a los estudiantes. Como comunidad, nos hicimos más fuertes mediante la adversidad.

He aprendido que nosotros, como una comuni-dad, nos podemos juntar en lo que la vida nos da, ya sea alto o bajo, manteniéndonos fuertes y posi-tivos para nuestras familias y lo mas importante, para nuestros estudiantes. Por esto estoy muy orgullosa de ser su presidenta en la PTSA. Les deseo éxito con su estudiante el resto del año escolar, un verano de descanso y productivo y espero verlos en agosto cuando se inscriban para el próximo año de experiencia en Samohi.

Estos exámenes se le dan a todos los estudiantes en los grados 9–11 en las materias principales, inglés, matemáticas, historia, y ciencia. Los CSTs están programados entre el lunes, 16 de mayo al viernes 20 de mayo. ¡Cada examen es muy importante!. M ientras terminamos el año escolar, la escuela de verano comienza. La escuela de verano será desde el miércoles, 29

de junio, 2011 al viernes, 12 de agosto. Como el año pasado, la escuela de verano será de martes a viernes, no habrá clases los lunes. Todas las clases son de recuperación.

M ientras llegamos a las etapas finales de un triunfante año escolar, la Casa S desea darle las gracias a nuestros padres

voluntarios que dieron generosamente su apoyo. El Sr. Runyon desea darle las gracias a todos por los maravillosos recursos y buenos deseos por tantas familias para que su fiesta de retiro fuera un éxito.

Al acercarse el fin del año, por favor continúe ayudando a su hijo a mantenerse enfocado y mejo-rar académicamente. Los finales llegarán pronto y los CSTs comienzan el 16 d mayo para los grados 9 al 11. La última oportunidad para tomar el CASEE este año escolar también es en mayo. E s difícil creer que el fin del año escolar termina en unas cuantas semanas. La Casa O desea darles las gracias a todos los padres

voluntarios por su generosas donaciones de tiempo y apoyo financiero los cuales nos permitieron proveerles a nuestros estudiantes actividades divertidas. Con la ayuda de nuestro consejero de la Casa O, hemos tenido nuestro fantástico desa-yuno, una divertida decoración de pasteles, una campaña para recaudar regalos en el invierno que tuvo mucho éxito recaudando más de $2000 para 20 estudiantes de la Casa O, un almuerzo para los maestros, una fiesta de helados, y una ceremonia de reconocimiento para los estudiantes. Gracias por su apoyo en todas estas actividades.

E l fin del año escolar se aproxima rápida-mente. Aunque nos gustaría comenzar a descansar tenemos mucho que hacer!! El

abandonar los estudios ahora puede resultar en bajo calificaciones, lo cual luego lleva a oportunida-des perdidas. No deje que se le pegue la fiebre de primavera. Su consejero puede ayudarlo a reavivar la motivación y dedicación para los estudios. Si sus calificaciones ya han bajado, todavía tiene varias semana para hacer un cambio positivo.

Muchísimas gracias a todos los padres y estudiantes que hicieron un éxito del Luau de la Casa H. Fue algo hermoso de ver el campo lleno de estudiantes con collares de flores. ¡Esperamos la próxima!

M ientras otro año más está terminando, el personal de la Casa I desea darles a las gracias a los padres y los miembros

de la comunidad que apoyaron a nuestra Casa y a Samohi este año. No hubiéramos podido hacer todas las actividades sin su generosidad.

La semana del 16 de mayo es cuando los estu-diantes en los grado del 9 al 11 tomarán el examen CST. Les repetimos, por favor asegúrese que su estudiante descanse, tenga un buen desayuno, y este listo para su examen cada día. Estos exáme-nes es uno de los indicadores que le deja saber a la escuela que tan bien estamos haciendo y cómo su estudiante está aprendiendo las normas del estado..

Finalmente, felicitamos a todos los estudian-tes de la Casa I que se gradúan en las próxima ceremonia de graduación. Estamos muy orgullosos de ellos. Tendremos un Banquete de Graduados de la Casa I el jueves, 2 de junio de 6:30–8:00pm en la biblioteca. Vamos a terminar tan fuerte como comenzamos y tener un gran fin de año escolar! ¡Vivan los Vikings!

En una nota personal, quizas ya sabe que comenzando el 1 de Julio, 2011, voy a ser el Nuevo Asistente a Superintendente de Recur-sos Humanos en el Distrito Unificado Escolar de ompoc en el Condado de Santa Barbara. Ha sido mi placer y honor de servirle a nuestros maravillosos estudiantes de Santa Mónica y haber trabajado con una facultad y personal dedicada y prefesional, al igual que con padres y comunidad de apoyantes y trabajadores indi-viduos. Los muchos retos fueron oportunidades y permitieron logros que fueron pasasos en la dirección correcta. Yo se que Samohi continuará en ese camino. La acreditación de WASC afirma ese compromiso de la manera más positiva y sin duda, la lucha por alcanzar la excelencia siempre guiará el buen trabaja que ustedes hacen.

¿No tiene estudiante en el último año en la familia? No hay problema. ¡La Fiesta de Graduación (Grad Nite) lo necesita!

E n el 1991, la primera Fiesta de Graduación (Grad Nite) en Samohi fue organizada para mantener a nuestros graduados seguros en

la noche que las estadísticas indica es la noche más peligrosa para los jóvenes. La tradición continúa, y no se debe perder la diversión. Muchos padres comienzan como voluntarios cuando comienza sus estudiantes en la escuela. Esto es todo lo que necesita saber…

P: ¿Qué es la Fiesta de Graduación (Grad Nite) exactamente?R: ‘Grad Nite’ es una fiesta en Samohi que dura toda la noche el martes, 21 de junio, 2011, desde las 9:30pm. a las 5:30am. La fachada es de un barco crucero edificado en las canchas de tenis, las cuales son cubiertas y decoradas para reflejar la destinación de la fantasía escogida por la clase. — ¡las Islas Griegas! Dentro, los estudiantes bailan toda la noche con DJ, juegos de carnaval, le cantan a losamigos en bar karaoke, juegan en mesas de casino, cambian sus ganancias en casil-las de premios y participan en otras actividades de sorpresas, con comidas y refrescos proveídos la noche entera. A las 5:00 a.m. ellos reciben su diplomas, una bolsa llena de regalos, y saliendo el sol, sale los graduados de la clase del 2011 ¡todos seguros después de una fabulosa noche!

P: Pero no tengo a un graduado. ¿Porqué debo de ayudar?R: ¡Este evento es enorme! Se necesita más de150 voluntarios en Grad Nite (en dos turnos), y aun más se necesitan la semanas anteriores y dos a tres después del evento para limpiar. Es increíble-mente divertido para los voluntarios. Muchas personas de la comunidad continúan siendo voluntarios mucho después que sus niños termi-nan en Samohi. Esta es su oportunidad de ver lo que pasa detrás de este fantástico evento, y hacer una noche inolvidable para estos merecidos grad-uados. Y no se olvide…cuando sea el turno de SU niño/a él/ella dependerá de los padres de TODAS las otras clases para esta gran celebración.

P: Muy bien. Deseo ser voluntaria. ¿Qué clase de ayuda se necesita?R: La noche de la fiesta Grad Nite puede ayudar en la casillas de juegos, asistir en la casilla de seguri-

dad de artículos, servir comida, aplicar tatuajes falsos, ayudar a los estudiantes hacer joyas de fantasía, y dar premios. Para los estudiantes que no quieren ver a sus padres también tenemos trabajos detrás de la acción como inscribir a otros voluntarios. Los turnos son 9:30pm-11:30pm, 11:30pm-1:30am, 1:30am-3:30am, y 3:30am-5:30am. Luego comienzan a quitar la fachada. Algunas personas hacen un turno, otros hacen varios, y ¡algunos se quedan toda la noche!

Antes de la gran noche, el crear el barco crucero requiere voluntarios que saben usar las herramien-tas, o pintar, y para los que no tienen habilidades en particular, pero desean ayudar los fines de semanas. Reúnase con nosotros en las canchas de tenis por unas horas. El gran comienzo es el sábado, 4 de julio aquí se necesitamos muchos. Si no está disponible para trabajar aun así puede ayudar haciendo una contribución de dinero o premios para las casillas.

P: ¡Fantástico! ¿Cómo puedo inscribirme? ¿Puedo traer a unamigo?R: ¡Muchasamistades se hacen voluntarios juntos! ¡Los esposos también! (Por dos años yo fui a una película tarde en la noche, luego a un desayuno en la madrugada y luego de voluntaria en el turno de 1:30–3:30 am de la fiesta Grad Nite.) ¡Es una buena manera de ver a padres que ha conocido desde que los niños entraron a la primaria! Lo único que le puede pasar es que se sienta emocio-nal cuando se ponga a recordar cuando vea a los graduados que ha conocido desde que entraron a kinder.

La inscripción es bastante fácil en línea. Las inscripción electrónica se llenan rápidamente asi que no espere. (Si tiene un estudiante que se gradúa y tiene planes de una cena, por favor no se comprometa al primer turno.) La página para apuntarse como voluntario de la fiesta Grad Nite se puede encontrar mediante la página electrónica de Samohi.

¡Felicitamos al equipo de la Copa de Ciencia Oceánica!

D os estudiantes en su último año, Madeleine Youngs y Zack Gold, y dos estudiantes en el tercer año, Dana Ritchie & Mari LeGag-

noux, se ganaron la Copa de Ciencia Oceánica de la Región del Sur de California (Surf Bowl) para Samohi — ganándole a otros 20 equipos. Como equipo en primer lugar, ellos compiten por el titulo nacional en Galveston, Texas, este abril. Unos de los equipos que compite de Samohi “Acadeca”, estos cuatros se han distinguidos al igual que su escuela. Con confianza y caramadería nacida de las largas horas de estudio y práctica, ellos planean elevar la distinción a nivel nacional en Galveston. Cuando le preguntamos la clave para su éxito, Mari LeGagnoux alagó a su compañeros y maestro del equipo Mr. Gaida, adicionando, “Cada uno de nosotros tomamos esto muy en serio, pero también nos divertimos mucho. Cuando te gusta en lo que tu trabajas, no puede más que tener éxito.” Todos le deseamos a estos emisarios de conocimiento buena suerte en traer el titulo nacional a Samohi.

G randes felicitaciones a los nominados para el Estudiante de ROP Sobresaliente del Año y los cinco finalistas de Samohi los cuales irán

al condado a competir con 22 distritos de escuelas: Nicole Andrews por Producción de la Película/Video, Alexander Chaban y David Xiao por Diseño Digital, Tanya Choo por Negocio Virtual, y Giovanni Jimenez por Tecnología Automovilista.

Las clases de negocios de ROP arrasó todo el mes pasado en la Competencia de Plan de Negocios de UCLA, tomando primer, segundo y tercer lugar. Entonces, estudiantes de Negocios Virtual y DECA viajaron a Oakland donde tomaron primer y cuarto lugar en las Presentaciones de Plan de Negocios…Bien hecho!

Reunión de Invierno : Viva el deporte de Samohi!

E l Polo Acuático de las hembras fue encabezado por el entrenador Matt Flanders. Terminaron en el segundo turno del CIF y 3o

en la liga. El futuro luce brillante para los Vikings, con los jugadores que regresan habiendo apren-dido rápidamente, teniendo una gran actitud y una étnica sobresaliente. Los premios individuales incluyen MVP: Lauren Nadel (SR), Más Mejorado Rachel Alvarez-Zakson (SO), Más Inspiración Joyti Uppal (SR). Primer Equipo en Todo CIF: Lauren Nadel (SR), Primer Equipo en la Liga: Lauren Nadel (SR), Aleya Spielman (JR), Segundo Equipo Team en Toda la Liga: Felle Baumgarten (JR) y Rachel Alvarez-Zakson (SO).

Baloncesto de las HembrasEl proclamado equipo de baloncesto de las

hembras terminó la temporada jugando en a nivel nacional, en el segundo torneo de CIF en los desempates del estado. Los Vikings quedaron corto perdiéndole 57–41 a Mater Dei, el equipo #1 en el condado. Los Vikings jugaron con muchos de los diez equipo más altos en el estado y la nación, con Marty Verdugo como entrenador principal de baloncesto la pasada temporada. Sobresalieron en la victoria contra Long Beach Poly, unos de los equipos más altos en los cuartos final de los desem-pates CIF, en los últimos segundos del juego. Feli-citamos a Moriah Faulk (UCLA), Kristina Johnson y Bianka Balthazar, las cuales asistirán a escuela de primera NCAA Division el próximo año. Samohi agradece al entrenador Verdugo y su personal por el nivel de excelencia que establecieron en contra de los mejores equipo en CIF.

Baloncesto de los BaronesEn el baloncesto de los barones el equipo del

entrenador Hecht, no comenzó el año muy bien, pero sí regresaron para terminar la temporada furiosamente. Cualificaron para Los desempates de CIF del tercer cuarto, y viajaron a la prepa-ratoria Upland High School. Adelantaron 7 en el tercer cuarto, pero terminaron perdiéndole a Upland, en su primer juego fuera del primer torneo de CIF. El entrenador Hecht expreso su gran agradecimiento a todos los estudiantes que se gradúan este Año. El Dijo que “…estamos muy contento por todos Los muchachos que regresan los cuales tienen mucha experiencia.” su equipo esta compuesto principalmente de estudiantes en los primeros años, que sin duda tomarán ventaja de su experiencia CIF 2011.

Fútbol (soccer) de BaronesEn las noticias de fútbol, el equipo de Samohi

de fútbol de los barones procuraron el titulo de Ocean League, y llegaron a los cuartos final de los desempates de California Interscholastic Federa-tion Southern Section Div. IV. Ellos fueron la semilla #1, antes de perder inesperadamente, en el frío, lluvia, viento en el pueblo Hesperia, a la preparato-ria Oak Hills High. El entrenador Serafín Rodríguez y su personal esperan que el año 2012 será aun más increíble.

Fútbol (soccer) de HembrasEl fútbol de hembras terminó capturando el

titulo de la liga y venció a la preparatoria Malibu High en un raro juego de desempate intra-distrito de Div. IV CIF jugaron en la preparatoria John Adams High. Los Vikings vencieron a Malibú 5–1, y luego tuvieron uno de los juegos más duro del año contra Ramona Convent. Aunque los Vikings del entrenador Jimmy Chapman quedaron corto 2–1, ellos demostraron un enorme nivel de agresividad y un increíble nivel de juego el año entero. Los Vikings fueron encabezados por Lizzy Lyons y Julia Glanz destinadas a NCAA Div. I.

La LuchasLos Grapplers de Samohi terminaron su tempo-

rada bajo la dirección del entrenador Mark Black. La luchadora Jessica Walker llego a los finales del estado, en lo que llego hacer una lucha memorable en CIF. Ella combatió a Julia Jenkins, una estudiante en el tercer año en Albany High. Como estudiante en el segundo año, su posición de subcampeona, le causa miedo a sus futuros oponentes.

Sato y Eric Sato, por ser aceptados en la Sala de la Fama de Deporte de Santa Monica College. Su gloria en las Olimpiadas en voleibol, y su liderazgo dentro de nuestro programa de voleibol, hace de ella y su personal uno de los mejores personal de entrenadores en CIF.

L a estudiante que se gradúa Lauren Nadel la cual va rumbo a Michigan, alcanzó All-CIF en la Sección Div. VI del Sur del equipo de polo

acuático de las hembras, después de llevar a los Vikings con 63 gol, 17 asistidos y 64 robados en la temporada de invierno 2010–11. En 10 ocasiones, ella hizo cuatro o más gol en un juego, incluyendo lo más alto de esta temporada de 10 gol en una victoria de 13–6 en contra de Yorba Linda.

En el baloncesto de las hembras, la estudiante Moriah Faulk, la cual aceptó entrada a UCLA, alcanzó All-CIF en la Sección Div. 1AA del Sur, después de adelantar a los Vikings con 13.7 puntos por juego. In el fútbol de los barones, Trevor Kovacs llegó al quipo de División 4. En el fútbol de las hembras, la Universidad de Arizona — Julia Glanz llego a la Div. IV después tener 29 gol y ocho asistidos para los Vikings.

Concierto Para las ArtesEl 7 de marzo, los artistas America, Rich-

ard Page de Mr. Mister, y Venice (la banda) le dieron la bienvenida al invitado de sorpresa David Crosby para un concierto sensacional en Barnum Hall con miembros del Coro y Orquestra de Samohi. La energía y el entusiasmo fueron palpable. El concierto recauda fondos para la campaña de la Fundación Educativa de Santa Mónica-Malibú (SMMEF) “Para las Artes”.

Escalinata a las EstrellasEn los últimos 62 años los estudiantes de

música de Santa Mónica-Malibú se juntan para celebrar su talento y asombrar a sus padres — y nuestra comunidad. Escalinata a las Estrellas ocurrió en el auditorio del ayuntamiento (Santa Monica Civic Auditorium), donde casi 1000 estu-diantes presentaron obras desde folklórico tradi-cional a obras maestras clasicas y música para películas con metraje proyectado. La aclamación del público y los entusiasmados aplausos fueron testimonios de la calidad del programa de música del distrito— uno de los más admirados en el estado.

Los estudiantes Kian Nozari, May Claire La Plante, Christina Lammell y Isaac Nemzer de programa de coro de Samohi cualificaron para competir en la Asociación Vocal del Sur de Cali-fornia competición para solistas. Vente estudi-antes fueron escogidos de más de 200 preparato-rias en la región— uno de los grupos más grande representando a una preparatoria.

Dos de nuestro solistas recibieron recono-cimiento especial; Christina Lammel tomó 5º sitio en la competencia general e Isaac Nemzer fue reconocido como el joven principiante con más promesa.

La escuela Samohi auspició el Festival de la Asociación de Banda y Orquestra del Sur de California en Barnum Hall el 23 y 24 de marzo. Todos los grupos de Samohi que participaron fueron catalogados como Superior en la función total y la lectura de música. La 62º competencia anual de Música Instrumental de Beca Kiwanis para los finalistas será el martes, 31 de mayo, en in Barnum Hall.

Los Winterguard de Samohi tuvieron la mayor temporada que han tenido, regresando con la medalla de plata en su división en el campe-onato de WGASC (Winter Guard Association

of Southern California) en el Condado de Orange. Más de 350 grupos compitieron ese fin de semana en seis diferentes instalaciones. Los guardias también llegaron a las competencia de finalistas en las competencias de Western US Regional auspiciada por el Winter Guard Interna-tional, la primera participación de los guardias.

La función del concierto de la Banda Pops será el miércoles, 8 de junio, a las 7pm en Barnum Hall. Es el evento final del año para todas las Bandas de Concierto, y es una manera maravil-losa para finalizar el año.

Esta primavera, la Orquestra Sinfónica de Samohi fue la primera invitada para participar en la Conferencia de Educadores del Estado de California en Fresno. La Orquestra de Cámara participó en el Festival de Orquestra Nacional en Ciudad Kansas y regresó con la categoría de Superior y la oportunidad de trabajar con el conductor Jung-Ho Pak.

Las Orquestras Sinfónica y de Cámara azotaron los premios en el Festival Heritage en marzo, ganando el Premio Instrumental Sweepstakes , otorgado a la escuela que tiene dos o más grupos instrumentales y con los puntos más altos; el Premio de Grupo de Orquestra Sobresaliente; el Premio Adjudicador, otorgado a la Orquestra Sinfónica y Orquestra de Cámara; el Premio Maestro, reconociendo a músicos

individuales Clara Lysy y Evan Kahn; y el Premio Celebrán-

dote, ganado por Keonjik Lee.

La Banda Avanzada de Jazz de Samohi la lanzó fuera del parque este año. En marzo, la Gran Banda y Combo de Jazz, bajo la dirección de Tom Whaley, compitieron en el 43º Festival Anual de Jazz de la Universidad Berklee de Música de la Preparatoria en Boston — el festival de jazz de preparatorias más grande del mundo.

Samohi se ganó los premios más altos del festival con el primer premio en la división más alta, División 1—Gran Banda y División 1— Combo Jazz.

Además, dos de nuestros estudiantes de Samohi fueron escogidos como los dos solistas más altos en todo el festival. Jake Noveck (guitar) situó en primer lugar como solista en la porción de Gran Bandas, y Steven Gordon situó en primer lugar en la categoría de solista de Combo Jazz.

Los estudiantes de Samohi se ganan el corazón de la nación de YouTube

C uando el estudiante Jason Pitts, que se gradúa este año, invita a alguien a la fiesta de graduación, lo hace con mucho estilo. El

estudiante de música le escribió una canción a su intencionada acompañante, Lianna Cohen. Luego él y cuatroamigos (Sam Balfus, Ryan Odening, Kian Nozari, y Hanyu Chwe) entraron tranquilamente a la clase de periodismo de Lianna y la sorprendie-ron con una serenata.

Mientras tanto, todo fue capturado en video y cargado en YouTube, donde el encanto de la canción de Jason y la maravillosa expresión de sorpresa de Lianna causó una tormenta en el país.

Ellos todos fueron llevado a Nueva York, donde estuvieron en el programa de TV Good Morning America. Y el video se puso viral con mas de un cuarto de millón de personas lo vieron.

¡La remodelación de Samohi comienza este verano!

L a escuela Santa Mónica High School ha sido parte del paisaje del centro de la ciudad en lo alto de Prospect Hill en la 6 y Pico por el

último siglo. Construida por los impuestos de la población en el 1913, Samohi está situada en 10,5 hectáreas y ha servido como la única preparatoria completa a los ciudadanos de Santa Mónica por los últimos 120 años.

La hora a llegado cuando hay que remodelar a Samohi para el próximo siglo, ya que el último edificio (de lenguaje) fue construido hace más de 40 años atrás y el estado del campo escolar refleja su edad. En los 3 pasados años, un equipo compuesto de personal del distrito, administrado-res de la escuela, maestros, al igual que estudian-tes y padres, han estado trabajando juntos con arquitectos y facilitadores en un plan maestro para nuestro campo escolar. Hay dos proyectos activos en desarrollo actualmente aquí en Samohi.

Primero, la Plaza de Ciencia y Tecnología comienza este verano (2011) con la construcción terminando el verano 2013. La zona de construc-ción será entre el campo de softbol y el estacio-namiento norte, el cual será usado para guardar equipo y construcción. Una nueva Plaza de Ciencia y Tecnología será construida donde se encuentra el campo de softbol y el estacionamiento norte. El impacto de la construcción a nuestros estudian-tes, personal, y la comunidad es nuestra primera preocupación. Se están haciendo planes con la Ciudad de Santa Mónica para mudar el campo de softbol y crear nuevo estacionamiento para el personal y los estudiantes.

Segundo, el proyecto del uso junto del ayun-tamiento de la ciudad (CCJUP) financiado por la Agencia de Reurbanización de la Ciudad de Santa Mónica el año pasado y apoyará un programa nuevo de deporte totalmente al día. Estas instala-ciones de deportes serán usadas por la escuela y

compartidas con nuestra comunidad los fines de semanas y días festivos mediante a un acuerdo de “uso juntos”. El ámbito, secuencia, y horario de estas nuevas instalaciones se están desarrollando ahora.

Emeritus College creo este premio para reconocer a los estudiantes de la preparatoria que participan y colaboran en la comunidad eméritos. Ms. Hill fue reconocida por su participación en la Banda de Concierto de Emeritus College y su logros acadé-micos y actividades extracurricular en Samohi. También recibió $500 dólares anónimamente por un miembro de Emeritus College que deseaban reconocer a un estudiante de la preparatoria que sirve a la comunidad Eméritos como voluntario. Emeritus College es un programa de Santa Monica College para la comunidad de ancianos. Establecida en 1975, Emeritus College le sirve a más de 3400 estudiantes por semestre. El nombre Eméritos se refiere a la persona “retirada con honor,.”


Getting more out of the PTSA

W hen my son Gabe started Samohi, we received this little newsletter, the Viking Voice. In all honesty, I could hardly read it. Even if it had interesting or helpful content, I wasn’t able to wade past the way it

looked in order to absorb it.But then I realized, “Hey — I bet I could make this publication more accessi-

ble — more fun to read.” I found out who put it together, and I asked (tactfully) if they could use some design help. In short, I volunteered. Turns out, they were delighted! And, suddenly, a whole world opened up at Samohi.

I met a wonderful group of parents who became my friends. I heard about shaping school policy before it became fact. I saw the passion people felt for the educational process. I got to meet a succession of smart, talented, energe-tic people who changed my experience of my son’s high school. It became my high school.

Volunteering is like that. You give a little. And you get more than you ever imagined in return.

Samohi PTSA — like the school itself — is just brimming with opportunities. Whatever you enjoy, whatever you’re good at, there’s room for you. Love to throw parties? There are events to coordinate. Internet savvy? We’ve got email campaigns and a website to take care of. Politically oriented? Get engaged in policy or support a campaign. Love selling? The annual giving program needs your closing skills. Whoever you are, whatever you do, there’s a role for you within the PTSA.

C uando mi hijo Gabe comenzó en Samohi, recibimos este boletín, el Viking Voice. Y sinceramente, casi ni lo podía leer. Aun si tenía un conte-nido interesante o que ayudaba, no podía superar la manera que lucia

para absorber el contenido.Entonces llegue a la realización, “Creo que puedo hacer esta publicación más
