Middelburg Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Department of Education and Steve Tshwete Local Municipality hosted the Local Annual Career Expo on 30 – 31 January 2013 at the Banquet Hall. The Department of Education has confirmed that this will be the ONLY career expo. It has become clear that the local industry requirements – specific refer-ence to technical skills – are not being met. The purpose for the Career Expo is to expose the local youth to career opportunities in the Steve Tshwete Municipal area The focus of the expo was on Gr 9 learners and Gr 12 learners with Math-ematics and Science. During the event exhibitors from ABSA; African Dynamics, Anglo American; Columbus Stainless Steel; Department of Education; Eskom; Mpumalanga Tourism Parks Agency (MTPA); Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust (MRTT), National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Nkangala FET College; Standard Bank; Steve Tshwete Local Municipali-ty, Tshwane University of Technology and Xstrata were ready to answer all questions learners had regarding potential career opportunities, sub-jects that are required and more. Columbus Stainless held informative sessions for Gr 12 learners. This initiative prepared them for writing a CV and covering letter, the process-es to expect as well as how to present themselves during interviews. It included more information involved in applying for work, and infor-mation on bursary applications and learnership opportunities that are available to them. The Gr 9 learners gathered in the conference area of the Banquet Hall to do psychometric tests to identify what subject choices will be suitable for their future. Various science experiments were also conducted during the expo to motivate learners to choose Mathematics and Science as future subjects. The learners thoroughly enjoyed these experiments and displayed great interest in and enthusiasm for, maths and science.

The purpose of the expo was to motivate the learners to be-come focused on their future, and to choose sub-jects in accord-ance with their career choices. The expo was a great platform to show learners that there is hope to reach their dreams, and that through hard work they can further themselves to one day become a successful member of the community. A total of 22 schools, with 4500 learners participated in this event, which fundamentally confirms the great success of the 2013 Career Expo. Executive Mayor Mike Masina, together with Cllr H Pilodia, MCC for Administration, Human Resource & Education expressed that they were happy that the Expo was conducted early in the year when this infor-mation is much needed, since students are confused about their future, and this platform can help steer them in the right direction. Executive Mayor Mike Masina also stated that without the guidance of such initiatives, students go away to study and return to find no employ-ment, but guiding learners in what the work place is in need of (technical skills), they can go to universities and come back with the necessary skills to contribute to our area.

His family fled the tyrannical rule of dictator Idi Amin in his native Uganda and settled in Krugers-dorp of all places! Since then David Kibuuka has gone one to become one of the most prolific come-dians this country has ever seen featuring regularly on television, the big screen and all of the country's biggest comedy stages. His unique background cou-pled with an intelligence evidenced by his honours in finance degree makes him a very unique & dis-tinct voice on the local comedy scene. "Mr Kibuuka - the only, foreign African comedian in the country - often likes to play on his outsider sta-tus to hold a mirror up to his adoptive nation and make jokes about things that other comics might ignore or avoid." Andrew Harding, BBC Africa Cor-respondent David has a unique brand of humour that combines wit and intellect without losing touch with his audi-ences. He broke into the comedy world when he won 5FM’s Freshest Five nationwide comedy talent search competition and he hasn’t looked back since. As he nears a decade of performing comedy in South Africa – his impressive can boast of perfor-mances at all the biggest comedy shows in the country including the likes of Bafunny Bafunny, Nandos Comedy Festival, Heavyweight Comedy Jam, Blacks Only, Laugh Out Loud and so on. David also got to perform alongside one of Australia’s big-gest comedians, Carl Barron on his national tour of South Africa. His talents go beyond just stand up and acting. A cerebral assassin, he is also regarded as one of the finest comedy writers in South Africa. He is also able to add intelligence to humour to cre-atively manifest ideas and concepts. Evidence of this is Dave being employed to sit on a creative

team that put together the creative direction for the Loerie Awards in 2005. He was also employed to write scripts for MNet’s comedy show ‒ Laugh Out Loud besides having also written scripts for the Pure Monate Show. He took his writing ability to another level by co-writing the script to the movie, “Bunny Chow”. He also written all of his inserts as the For-eign Correspondent on every single episode of Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola in every single season. The show goes into Season 6 this year. In 2013 the prodigious talent that is David Kibuuka is definitely launching a full scale assault on en-trenching himself as a superstar, not only in South African comedy but in the entertainment industry as a whole.

Come and join us on 14 March 2013 at Riverside Estate and see David in action.
