Be a Gift to the World
President Elect Joe Gedeon welcomed Rotarians and visitors from off shore. They are Seth Murray from the Rotary Club of Southeast Springfield MO a friend of PP Chad Adams and Dr. Dean Holman visiting his son who lives in Hawaii and is a member of the Rotary Club of Menlo Park, CA. All are happy to be in Hawaii.
President Rhodora Pagay called the meeting to order at 12:15. She started by telling us that today is Paul Harris Day and she congratulated everyone who remembered to wear their medals. She thanked Allan Silva for being our speaker and Past President Carol Riley for being our scribe. PP Dave Livingston inspired us. PP Dave said he just attended the opening of the Harold Estes Leadership Center at Pearl Harbor. When Harold was 79, he brought the Bowfin to Honolulu. When he was 80, he brought the USS Missouri to Honolulu. PP Dave met Harold in 1995. He was a lifelong friend and PP Dave was his financial advisor. Harold always spent more money than he had and he always had friends give him money to pay! This is because he always bought and gave USS Missouri shirts to all Navy chiefs. At one time, he had 50 chiefs sit together for a picture. They were all wearing their shirts! There are now 50 pictures of Harold in the Leadership Center. When Harold was 92, he brought in ten members to our Club. PP Dave challenged all of us to do the same. Catherine Henski led us in the Pledge to our American flag. Guests were introduced by PP Dave Hamil. PDG Phil Sammer and Past Presidents were introduced. PP Gayle Warshawsky was our song leader for the song we sang to visiting Rotarians. President -Elect Joe Gedeon welcomed our special visitors. We had visitors from Springfield, Missouri and Menlo Park, California. Kathy Higa shared the bucket with the Club. PP Janet Scheffer gave $70 to the Foundation, was glad that she has two shoes on and recommended that you are over 50 you do not do hurdles! Jan Stelovsky talked about renting a room from a very spiritual lady who gave him a hug. PP Gayle Warshawsky is excited because her doctor has told her that she is ready to play in the Maui festival. PE Joe Gedeon told us about a close family friend who recently passed away. He had cancer for a number of years. He was Uncle Steve. PE Joe asked us to keep Uncle Steve in our prayers. Patti Mitchell talked about Thomas Hall who recently talked about Angel Flight and work is being done with Tripler Hospital to facilitate services. Thomas still needs volunteer pilots, so please help finding them. Flora Lu talked about her daughter who is getting her MBA at Pennsylvania University PP Dave Livingston talked about going to the Heart of a Hero Ceremony to honor a service man. He saw Patti
Mitchell and Gloria King at the ceremony and a big “Thank you!” was given to the Rotary Club of Waikiki for our services. PP Dave also thanked Chris Fidelibus for donating his staff and equipment for diving. President Rhodora told us that her daughter will be going to American University. PP Tony Gedeon told us that Change of Command will be held on June 23 from 5:00 - 10:00 at the Elks Club thanks to Walter Nishioka. Announcements: 1. President Rhodora announced that we will be
painting Next Step on April 16th. There is also an up-coming Books for Kids event scheduled.
PP Dave Livingston introduced our guest speaker: Allan Silva. He told us that the topic is Aloha, but there will be changes in the presentation this year. Allan told us that once he re-joined our Club, he was given a new job working with gang students. He is unable to join us for our meetings, but is going to morning clubs to make up. Allan told us that Harold Estes was Mr. Aloha. Allan told us that he has been with the DOE and is ready to retire. He is currently writing a book on Aloha and has been researching the topic. Alan asked members to tell each other what aloha means to them. He then asked PP Tony Gedeon to come to the front of the room and tell us what aloha means to him. He asked PP Dave Livingston to do the same thing. We heard such things as hello, goodbye, love, help, you’re welcome, grace, and spirit. Allan said he has been interviewing people all over Hawaii. He was talking with an older woman from Kawaii who told him it meant breath of life. She then told him he needed to talk with a woman who has written a book on aloha and interview her. If he didn’t get that interview, he should not write the book. Later, he went to the library and Kamehameha School and found a book about Hawaii that was written by the person he was supposed to interview. There was a picture of her in the book. It was a million to one chance that he would find this book, but he did…and now he can write his book which will be a handbook for students. At the end of his speech, Allan told us he saw true aloha in our group. He asked Sheri to come to the front of the room. She did and Allan asked everyone what

they like about her. Words like kindness, harmony, pleasantness, and modesty came up! Sheri has been working at Pacific Beach for 34 years and shares this with visitors every day! Allan challenged us to all give aloha to everyone we meet every day. He said that we should tell people we appreciate them. The key to a productive life is aloha. At the end of the meeting Catherine Henski had her ticket drawn. Congratulations! It was white!! We all said the Four Way Test and the meeting was adjourned after President Rhodora thanked the set-up crew. Respectfully submitted, Past President Carol Riley

GOODWILL GAMES
The Goodwill Games were held in the town of Hoi An, a resort on the South China Sea..
Much like any schoolyard competitors, incursions from grazing cows notwithstanding, players stretched and warmed up, took turns retrieving out-of-bounds balls, and, after the final goal, lined up to exchange high-fives. The Vietnamese contingent handily outscored our group of American Rotary volunteers, but the defeat was far from bitter. The five Rotarians, four Interactors, and two 20-something alumni of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards had already achieved what they had come to Vietnam to do: distribute durable soccer balls to promote play and to spread Rotary’s message of service and goodwill.
The community center sits on the outskirts of Hoi An, a resort town on the South China Sea. Orange and fuchsia bougainvillea blossoms spill over stalls selling scarves and spices at one of Vietnam’s oldest marketplaces, and along the banks of the Thu Bon River, food vendors serve aromatic pho (noodle soup) and banh mi (sandwiches). By night, tourists dine under glowing silk lanterns at the seaside restaurants and hotels.
The kids we met in Hoi An have a few soccer balls on hand, but are just as likely to kick around rocks or bundles of banana leaves. Tim Jahnigen first observed this phenomenon in 2006 as he watched news footage of a refugee camp in Darfur, Sudan. The children on the screen were playing soccer using a bundle of trash tied with twine. Struck by the evidently universal tendency of children to play no matter how difficult the circumstances, Jahnigen set out to develop a soccer ball tough enough to endure the harshest conditions.
Almost 10 years later, One World Play Project – the company Jahnigen founded with his wife, Lisa Tarver in 175 countries.
