We have much to celebrate this year at the Washington Jesuit Academy, and many people to thank for our achievements. In January, we earned full, ten-year ac-creditation through the Association of Independent Maryland Schools at their

highest level, an achievement due in no small part to the commitment of our talented faculty. Last spring, we completed construction on our state-of-the-art athletic facilities and dedicated our new field to Ruppert Companies for their leadership and generosity. Our sixth class of 8th graders graduated from WJA in spring, and all 19 of these talented students were accepted into college preparatory high schools throughout the Mid-Atlan-tic. 100% of our second class of alumni graduated from high school in June. We are very proud to report that in our first two classes of graduates, 31 of 38 young men are fresh-men and sophomores in college this fall.

As we recognize the academic and personal successes of our students and alumni, we reflect on why we do what we do, and who we hope our students will become. In the tradition of Jesuit schools, a committee of teachers and staff spent the summer drafting a Profile of a Graduate at Graduation. They asked themselves, “What makes a WJA gradu-ate different from his neighbors and peers? What has he learned at the Academy that he will carry with him for the rest of his life?” As this committee explored our mission, the document simply wrote itself: a WJA graduate is Willing to be Courageous, Just in his Actions, and Active in his Acceptance of God, his Gifts and Others.

We are thrilled to share WJA’s Profile of a Graduate at Graduation in this report. On these pages, we have identified student stories, elements of the WJA program and specific moments from the last year that illustrate characteristics from the Profile. It may look dif-ferent from other Profiles you may have seen; ours is unique because WJA is unique. Read on, as we reveal the small acts of courage, the openness to growth and the counter-cultur-al behavior that distinguish a WJA graduate from his peers. We hope that you recognize the role that you play—as a parent, a volunteer, a donor or a friend—in forming our young men and preparing them for what’s next.

On behalf of the WJA Board, Faculty and Staff, thank you for your generous and loyal support of our students. Your commitment to the Washington Jesuit Academy empowers our team to change lives.

Sincerely,

Leonard Baxt William B. WhitakerChairman PresidentBoard of Directors

WJA studentDESEan

DeSean showed a lot of courage when he joined the inaugural debate team two years ago. Though he liked debate and thought he might be good at it, DeSean knew that joining a new activity could be a risk and would take a lot of work. As a student of the Academy, however, he was open to growth. DeSean was intentional in seeking help and guidance from his debate coaches Mr. T.J. Tondorf and Mr. Charlie Steele. He was disciplined in his approach to debate preparation. He contributed to his team’s debate research. Even-tually, DeSean’s teachers noticed a transformation. He became more social, more verbal, more expressive in his academics as well as debate.

WJA teachers encourage students like DeSean to take on new challenges. Year after year, they see how courage in extra-curricular activities and sports translates to confidence in the classroom. And as for DeSean, now an 8th grader: “He has emerged as a leader in his class,” says Mr. Tondorf, “And he continues to push himself to new levels of success.”

WJA momentaSKInG FOR HELP

As a 6th grader, Derrick had a bad attitude. He argued with his teachers. He distracted his classmates. But when Mr. Powers placed him on a behavior contract in May 2009 and told him to earn his spot on the 7th grade roster, he listened up.

“His close friend was expelled, and Derrick decided that he did not want to leave WJA, too,” explains Mr. Carlos Washington, Derrick’s teacher. “He made the conscious deci-sion to ask for help, and I think that took a great deal of courage.”

The WJA faculty went out of their way to keep Derrick on track and allow him to grow. Mr. Dicks helped him to accept correction. Ms. Clark worked with him on emotional stability. And Derrick, now open to growth, sought their help. As he changed, he be-came committed to justice, even of his own actions. He developed strength of character, started making better decisions and has transformed into a joyful, young man who lives to serve his friends and classmates.

“I expect him to be a leader,” anticipates Mr. Washington, of Derrick’s upcoming gradua-tion. “I think he’ll surprise a lot of people.”

WJA ProgramREtREatS

“The Retreat Program at the Academy is all about reflection and personal growth. We teach our students how to disconnect from the chaos of their daily routines and take time to reflect on their decisions, habits and behaviors, and their consequences. To use an Ignatian term, they work on becoming ‘contemplatives in action.’

We see powerful acts of courage and vulnerability at retreats when, in a public venue in front of their peers and teachers, our students own up to their mistakes and shortcom-ings. Their classmates point out one another’s strengths, and they reflect on how to use those strengths to overcome their shortcomings. It takes a lot of courage for boys this age to be honest with themselves in front of others, but they never fail to amaze us.”

— Ms. Ann Clark, Director of Counseling Services

WJA studentDEmEtRIuS

Demetrius did not have the easiest time at WJA. Like most of his peers, he had been severely underserved by his elementary schools and had to work twice as hard to catch up while he was at the Academy. But, perhaps due in part to the encouragement and dedication of his teachers, Demetrius knew what potential he had within him. He active-ly sought help from his teachers and coaches, and over his three years at the Academy, he developed discipline, character and self-confidence, both in academics and athletics. And since his graduation, despite some setbacks in high school and at home, he has remained steadfast in his journey toward high school graduation and college.

In his own pursuit of excellence, Demetrius acknowledged the potential of others, and assumed the responsibility of a leader and a role model for his peers and younger class-mates. “He always made it a point to mentor the younger students,” says his teacher and coach Howard Blue. “He takes pride in doing things the right way, and he wants everyone to do well, too.” Demetrius will be respected by his peers and teachers for years to come. He will be thought of as a young man who works very hard and, perhaps more importantly, as a quiet leader and mentor.

A WJA graduate is just in his actions

WJA momentStanDInG uP

Few 14-year-olds demonstrate the compassion and courage it takes to walk into an adult’s office and advocate for a fallen friend. But it happened at WJA, and moments like these truly exemplify the character, compassion and commitment to justice that students learn over three years at the Academy. An 8th grader, upon hearing that a classmate had been dismissed from WJA for a poor decision, had the bold conviction to walk unan-nounced into WJA President Bill Whitaker’s office—bypassing his advisor, counselor and Headmaster. He defended his classmate’s character—though not his actions—and reminded Mr. Whitaker that everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves an oppor-tunity to start over. WJA teachers strive to raise young men who will stand up for second chances.

WJA ProgramaDVISORY

“Advisory is a period each day that we teachers spend with a small group of students, where we focus on character, reflection and personal growth. It’s a time for me to catch up with each individual student and learn how things are going—academically, socially, at home, in sports and clubs, everything. We set personal and academic goals each week and reflect on our progress and our habits. We discuss issues that affect the school, the nation and the world, and we try to be intentional about our service to others. Advisory offers a daily opportunity for us to explore ways these young men can be responsible leaders and role models.”

A WJA graduate is active in his acceptance of God, his gifts and others

WJA studentDOuGLaS

Douglas acknowledges his gifts—he is a talented artist. He finds a creative outlet in all of his school assignments, his artwork is displayed all over WJA’s walls and he has had a starring role in summer Pulse Dance routines. But beyond his creative talents, Douglas is recognized by his teachers for his ability to encourage and inspire his classmates in pursuit of their own gifts. A quiet leader and protector, Douglas has spent his recesses and free time nurturing the artistic talent of a dozen or more of his classmates.

“He has become a leader in an area that hasn’t always been particularly popular at WJA,” says Mr. Derek Porter, Douglas’ teacher and Pulse Dance instructor. But now, he ex-plains, the school is buzzing about the arts. “Students are being courageous and creative as they find new ways to express themselves through art, music, dance and spoken word. It’s an incredibly positive thing to be happening here at WJA, and I think we have Doug-las to thank for some of it.”

When 7th grader Andre lost his mother unexpectedly last March, his classmates rallied together in what became a stunning illustration of compassion, service and support. They attended the funeral, prayed for Andre and his family and comforted him during his difficult transition at home. Andre’s classmates planted a Tree of Life in memory of his mother and all of the loved ones that WJA students had lost that year. This Tree of Life stands in bold serenity alongside the new Ruppert Field and symbolizes the short life of a young mother—as well as a moment in which an entire school community came together in service of one of their own. WJA strives to form the kinds of young men who will sacrifice and serve.

A WJA graduate is active in his acceptance of God, his gifts and others

WJA ProgramCOmmItmEnt tO SERVICE

“We instill in our students a strong commitment to service here at the Academy, and we do it through frequent service projects. Through toy drives and fundraisers and volun-teering at soup kitchens, we teach the boys about compassion, social justice and why it’s important to look out for the needs of others. They also recognize that everyone has something to give, and that can be very empowering to these young men.

For the past two years, I have led a group of students downtown to serve sandwiches to homeless people. The boys are always struck by how gracious and joyful the recipients are, impressed by how they share the food with one another. This summer, we ran out of sandwiches, and the students were so moved by the needs of the homeless that they gave their own pocket money. It meant so much to our students to have the opportunity to use what they have to make a difference.”
