Homemade Lotions, Potions, Balms and Creams These recipes are mostly to do with nature’s bounty, with grasses, flowers and herbs. Many of them involve reducing the plant matter to liquid form. This is called an infusion and is made by adding a pint of boiling water to 1 oz of the essential ingredient (in stone jug or jar if possible) Cover with a cloth, leave to cool, stir, strain, use. To prevent wrinkles: Make an anti-wrinkle lotion with a 1/2 oz (15 grams) glyc-erine, 1/2 oz rosewater, 1/2 oz witchhazel and 3 tablespoons honey. Massage warm olive oil into the forehead, or make a paste of fine oatmeal and lemon juice and spread thickly all over your face. For a good complexion: eat green leafy vegetables and raw carrots, but—best of all—dandelion leaves. (MY mother use to make us eat dandelions in our food, but we thought it was because we were poor!!) To cleanse your face and stimulate circulation: Rinse it with camomile tea or try a tincture of benzoin (Tincture of benzoin is a pungent solu$on of benzoin resin in

alcohol. A similar prepara$on called Friar's Balsam or Compound Benzoin Tincture (USP))

in water. For greasy skins: Use oatmeal instead of soap—half fill a small muslin bag, use it like a sponge with warm water. The best conditioner: true cold cream made from 1/2 oz spermaceti, 1/2 oz white wax, 4 oz almond oil. Shred the waxes, put all ingredients into a stone jar. Place jar in a pan of hot water and simmer until the wax has melted, then add 2 ozs rosewater cafefully, drop by drop, beating the mixture continuously. For Corns; Soak your feet in hot salted water, and after drying, squeeze on a drop or two of the juice from the broken stem of a fresh celandine plant. Leave to dry. Use celandine also for warts. A drop of cinnamon oil applied daily is said to remove a wart; or try rubbing it with a radish or the juice of mari-gold flowers. To stop a cold: in the early stages take a hot infusion of basil. If it is past the early stages, take plenty of alfalfa or peppermint tea, or an elderberry brew. Ordinary tea with a large sprig of mint in it is good too.

MacKenzie Under 11`s headed to Waimate last Saturday to play a strong team

of Waimate boys determined to take down the team at the top of the ladder. Waimate gave the boys a shake up from the start, snatching up any loose ball well from the rucks and mauls and putting the pressure on MacKenzie. It was a close first half but Mackenzie fought back in the second half with a great set piece send-ing Jack Andrew over the line. Nikau Whetu scored shortly after from the back of the scrum with a run away try. Mackenzie soon tightened their game and started working as a team to score 8 trys and 5 conversions in total to take out a convincing win 50-24. Corbyn Hocken took home the player of the day trophy and Jayde Officer took out best tackler of the day.

Hair Colour Tips:

1. Highlighting is a great way to add tone to monochromatic hair (jet black, pure brown).

2. Beware of hair colours that have green, blue, or pur-ple undertones, like “ash”. If you mix them with warm tones, your hair colour will turn out green.

3. The levels (one to ten nat-urally) you see on hair colour-ing boxes are the lightness or darkness of the colour. Level one is black (darkest) and lev-el twelve is light blond.

4. “Complimentary colours”

are opposite each other on the colour wheel. Blue-orange, violet-yellow, etc. If you want to neutralize unwanted high-lights, choose the complemen-tary colour. For instance, red will cancel out an ash under-tone, and an ashen colour

neutralizes any red highlights in your hair.

5. Be sure to check if your hair colour is a “progressive dye”. Progressive dyes continually add more colour with each use. For instance, if you’re colouring blond hair black, your first use of a progressive hair colour may not give the result you expected. However, continued use will turn your hair jet black.

6. Hair colours, like perms, are chemically based so if you’re pregnant, be sure to

check with your doctor before colouring your hair.

7. Henna hair dyes are organic based hair colours that don’t mix well with chemicals.

8. Stay out of the pool and the ocean after colouring your hair. Neither sea salt nor chlorine mixes well with chemi-cal hair colours.

Amiri & Aroha is an independ-ent New Zealand film from award winning indie film maker David Whittet. The film is also sup-ported by Peter Jackson who has offered his skills and knowledge of film making to David. Some of the actors in the cast performed in the Lord of the Rings movies. Amiri & Aroha began as a Maori take on Romeo & Juliet, set against a background of gang rivalry and tribal hostility on the stunning East Cape of New Zealand. Aroha is the daughter of a notorious gang leader and she's desperate to escape from the gang and from an arranged gangland marriage to her cousin Hunapo. Amiri is a smart, upwardly-mobile businessman from the big smoke of Auckland, who promises Aroha a new life, away from the gang. But Hunapo, a gang leader in waiting, refuses to let go of Aro-ha and the gang threatens reprisals if she marries Amiri. This is your opportunity to be part of this cinematic phenomenon! Our big break came with wins in the prestigious Best Shorts and Accolade competitions and since then we have taken the international film festival circuit by storm and we have expanded the project into a trilogy of three companion films. Everyone who pledges to this project will be offered a role in the film. Regrettably transport to the film location in Gisborne New Zealand is at your own ex-pense, but what an opportunity for a fantastic film making holiday in our magnificent corner of the world! If you can't make the journey to New Zealand, you can still be part of this cine-matic success story. We're using innovative new technology to enable video links to the set! Be the first virtual assistant director in cinema history! Alternatively, if you just want to be a movie mogul, you can join the team as an associate or executive producer. We have completed the first film in the trilogy and are currently discussing distribution and broadcast on satellite television. Principal photography on the second film Amiri's Child is complete and is now in post production. Amiri's Child takes the story to the next generation, with a David and Goliath battle between Aroha and Hunapo's children. We have started prin-cipal photography on the third film and anticipate that the majority of the filming will be done in July and October 2012. We need your help to complete the trilogy. We have an outstanding script for the final film, an intensely dramatic story, with a gripping climax and an important contemporary message. We have a fantastic ensemble cast, our actors will be the stars of tomorrow! Last But Not Least - Other Ways You Can Help Please spread the word about Amiri & Aroha and help us reach our goal and beyond! Every dollar helps us to create the film we visualize! Like us on Facebook! Post us on Facebook! Tweet us! Tell all your family and friends about us! Even if you are unable to pledge, you can still help us by getting the message out to everyone you can! Thank you all a million times! $5—Film Extra—A thank you for your contribution on the film's credits and on our website/Facebook page plus the opportunity to be an extra in the film (travel to the film location in Gisborne New Zealand is at your own expense).

NEW YEAR “Merry Christmas, down-under”; “Jovial mid-winter solstice”; “Happy New Year”! Judging by these expressions you would think it’s the season for festivities. Northerners join these celebrations under the charm of winter. For us down here, these words used to be mere pleasantries but a revival has begun. Now sitting around a table with family and friends, a roast dinner and a warm fire, we can join in a celebration of our own, during mid winter, known as Matariki! Maori acknowledge New Year at this time, but it is an occasion for people from all cultures. Matariki is the name of a star cluster and when visible was used by Polynesian explorers as a marker for voyages; so travellers from here and overseas are included in the festivities. The stars of Matariki, are recognised by every culture and known by most as the Pleiades. This name comes from the daughters of Pleione and the Greek story tells how these seven sisters were transformed by Zeus into doves to evade the great hunter Orion and his greedy eyes. For other Pacific nations, the Japanese regard this as Subaru, an emblem of unity and togetherness, popularised nowadays by the car company. Native Americans see the stars as seven rebellious children, who chanted through the night and were thrown skyward by evil spirits. For the natives of the Pacific, our story starts with Matariki being the brightest star, as bril-liant as a crescent moon. It was also known as Mata-ariki, a star bestowed with the name meaning the eye of the High Chief. The star was proud and boastful outshining all, but not for the first time has others gone and set out to teach the overconfident a lesson. It was smashed into seven pieces in an attempt to destroy its majesty. It was no longer the bright-est star; however, most agree that as individual stars it is even more beautiful; moreover the stars have learnt to not be as arrogant as before. The name now, for some is translated as Mata-riki, which means the little eyes. Because of its importance, it is regarded in Maori my-thology as one of the four pillars of the night sky. These pillars are joined by the Milky Way, which some Maori see as a great canoe, stretching from one horizon to the other. This is only seen from our southern latitude when Matariki rises. Its historical relevance as a navigational tool is only part of its importance. By going out and witnessing its rise in the pre-dawn sky is a true spectacle. By including one of nature’s chilling experiences in our lives we are connected with both the wintry earth and the won-drous sky. To be separate from nature is to forget where we are from. For many, a connec-tion with the past is essential for growth and for moving forward and Matariki’s appearance is a return of the familiar. Summer constellations rise, (albeit, into the cold winter morning,) but its significance is the time for a return to longer days, rebirth and new spring life. It’s a turning point and a time for recollection and resolutions. New horizons are what it symbolis-es, the dawn of a new day’s sun. This new beginning is one we can all identify with, not only as the start of a new year but everything that it hopes to bring. Kristian Wilson Earth & Sky
