Powering

Solution

GE is bringing advanced technologies and energy solutions that are cleaner, more efficient and more powerful to governments, utilities and other regional customers. Its energy portfolio ranges from highly-efficient gas turbines and industry-leading wind turbines, to smart grid services and energy management technologies. Currently in MENA, GE helps purify more than 800 million liters of water a day, and plays a role in generating 60 percent of its electricity. The transformation of the region’s economies is underway. We partner to power it .

Challenge

Fast-paced industrialization, economic diversification and rapid population growth are driving strong and sustained increases in power demand across the MENAT region. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), power consumption is expected to increase by nearly 25 percent by 2015, while in Turkey, it is expected to grow six percent a year through 2023. Most countries in the region have committed to meeting a significant share of this increased demand through clean, renewable energy. Additionally, in this water-challenged region, skyrocketing water consumption is not only requiring more desalination capacity, but also highlighting the need for a major commitment to water recycling, treatment and reuse.

Perfect Lighting for a Perfect Circle

More than 600 meters of GE’s Tetra Contour LED architectural lighting is used on the iconic Aldar headquarters building in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Aldar is Abu Dhabi’s leading property development, management and investment company. Their head office is a coin-shaped, 23 story-tall building and the world’s first circular skyscraper.

Two complete circles of Tetra Contour LED are installed in the external edges of the building to emphasize the building’s structure and create a dramatic luminary effect. The Contour system, specifically designed for architectural use, is a flexible LED light with IP66 that can be heat formed and molded into virtually any shape.

The LED Lighting system provides aesthetic qualities as well as lower operational costs. GE’s Tetra Contour LED is up to 40 percent more energy efficient than a traditional neon system and maintenances costs are lower as well, contributing to the sustainability of the building.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, electricity used for lighting accounts for almost 20 percent of global power consumption and close to 6 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. If a global transition to efficient lighting occurred, these emissions could be reduced by half.

Supporting the region’s drive towards sustainability, GE Lighting offers technologies and solutions that may save up 80 percent of energy indoors and up to 60 percent of energy in outdoor solutions, through its state-of-the-art LED solutions.

Iberia LED Lights Moulay el Hassan Bridge in Morocco

Over the last decade, Morocco has undertaken an ambitious infrastructure modernization plan, and consequently, the Moulay el Hassan Bridge, connecting the cities of Sale and Rabat, was renovated under this nationwide project.

SGTM, Morocco’s largest construction company, was looking for lighting products that are low in maintenance costs, have an aesthetic design and are produced by a recognized brand assuring product quality and customer service.

GE’s solution was to provide 72 Iberia LEDs, decorative LED luminaires, to light the new bridge. The lights were installed at a height of 11 meters to ensure visibility on the three traffic lanes in each direction. This was essential to increase safety on the bridge.

With the installation of this new system, GE was able to provide the city of Rabat with significant savings in energy and maintenance costs, while ensuring extraordinary luminous quality.

Challenge

The healthcare market in the region is growing rapidly due to the population increase, changing social demographics and high prevalence of lifestyle diseases. This population is in need of long-term healthcare infrastructure and specific disease-related solutions. For example, in the region, women diagnosed with breast cancer are almost ten years younger than in western countries. Worse, many of these patients are already in the advanced stage of the disease because of the stigma involved with being screened.

Solution

GE is partnering with governments and private providers across the region to develop the infrastructure and solutions required to meet these enormous healthcare needs. We are providing advanced diagnostic and treatment tools to help physicians better detect and treat diseases, and are delivering patient record systems to lower costs and enhance patient care. The region faces a gap in healthcare and we are partnering to cure it .

Challenge

GE and the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Since Saudi women don’t get screened early or often, nearly 70 percent of those diagnosed are already at an advanced stage by the time they visit a doctor, leading to a lower survival rate than in countries where the disease is caught early. GE, in partnership with the Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH), is fighting breast cancer. Together, GE and MOH kicked off a comprehensive program to attack breast cancer in the Kingdom with the vision to reduce the mortality rate and the stress caused by breast cancer. The focus of the initiative is to promote awareness among women about breast cancer, with emphasis on early detection.

The program aims to give 10,000 Saudi women scans and care. GE helped train Ministry employees and local staff involved in the program, set up a call center where women schedule appointments, and launched a dedicated website focused on the disease and the importance of early diagnosis. It also equipped three mobile clinics with GE technology, and provided IT systems that electronically transmit patient scans and data to King Fahad Medical City for analysis. GE also helped to structure screening and care pathways for each patient, depending on their breast cancer risk profile.

GE’s commitment to fight the disease does not stop there. GE has also worked with the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) on an innovative technology, the new SenoBright Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM). The goal of the joint research program was to develop a new and innovative technology to aid physicians in the diagnosis of breast cancer, using the latest developments in digital mammography. GE estimates that by 2020, more than 1 million women worldwide will be examined using SenoBright, and that this technology can help lead to more productive diagnosis paths for nearly 250,000 women.

Providing the Latest Technology and Advanced Solutions

Clemenceau Hospital Lebanon’s premier medical institution is Clemenceau Medical Center (CMC), a Johns Hopkins Medicine International affiliate. Together with GE, the partners are providing the latest in healthcare technology, medical imaging and nuclear medicine in its Advanced Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Department. The facility complements CMC’s medical services and is a critical component in modern diagnosis and treatment. One of the GE-installed technologies includes the PET 16-slice CT used in non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of the treatment for almost all types of cancers and neurological and cardiovascular conditions. The powerful images of the internal workings of the body captured by this PET CT identify abnormalities very early in the progression of a disease. The PET CT shows organ function as well as structure, and can reveal disease-related biological change several years before the patient experiences symptoms and long before other imaging techniques are effective. The versatility of this new system allows medical treatment to begin sooner, leading to a higher chance of success. It also reduces stress on the patient by eliminating the need for invasive and less accurate diagnostic procedures.

Sulaiman Al HabibIn the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, GE signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Group to provide diagnostic imaging equipment for non-profit hospitals in the Middle East and Africa. The main driver of the partnership is to provide development consultancy, advanced medical equipment and services for private hospitals and clinics being set up by the group in the Kingdom. In addition, GE will offer assistance in setting up primary healthcare centers based on market analysis and hospital synergies. The company will also facilitate medical and paramedical education programs for hospital and clinical staff.

Page 16: We Make Progress Together

Challenge

With a focus on economic diversification, increased industrialization and deeper integration into the global economy, countries in the region are rapidly expanding their transportation infrastructures. This includes airports and rail lines, along with the locomotives and airplanes to use them. Across MENA, nearly $250 billion in railway, tram and metro projects are proposed or under development, while airport spending tops $90 billion in the Gulf Corporation Council member states alone. In addition, Middle East airports are expected to handle more than 400 million passengers by 2020, with Dubai International Airport becoming one of the largest airports in the world. In Turkey, $23.5 billion has been allocated through 2023 to modernize its nearly 11,000km of existing railways, including development of 10,000km of high-speed rail; it also is looking to grow Turkish Airlines’ fleet to 750 planes.

Solution

GE is developing the locomotives, aircraft engines and systems that are helping countries in the region improve the transportation infrastructure so crucial to their evolution as modern and integrated market economies. With partners, GE has 2,220 aircraft engines in service in the region, accounting for 64 percent of the total. With the world’s largest aircraft engines and most powerful locomotives, GE does not just support the region’s economy. We partner to move it.

Solution

Drawing on its global resources, GE is bringing knowledge, capacity-building and training to empower the region’s workforce, while its capital and partnership agreements are helping companies grow, develop their operations and achieve their ambitions. GE is not just watching as the region realizes its future. We partner to help build it .

Challenge

The population in the region, now at more than 390 million, has grown nearly four-fold since 1950 and is set to nearly double again by 2050. The region has the largest youth population in the world, with those under 25 years of age representing at least 40 percent of the population in most countries. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, youth make up nearly 50 percent. Youth unemployment in MENA is the highest of any region in the world, with one-quarter of young people out of a job. This represents an immense opportunity, but only if this young labor force gets appropriate training and job opportunities.

For more than a century, volunteerism has been a vibrant part of GE’s culture, as both an individual employee activity as well as an organizational effort. We coordinate our resources — including products, matching gifts, grants and people — to create responses tailored to local and individual challenges. Today, the ultimate measure of GE’s business is found in the improvements to the lives touched by our work. Our employees volunteer over 1 million hours of community service every year. Currently, there are registered GE Volunteer councils in Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

One of many volunteer projects in the region includes a beach clean-up in Kuwait, sponsored by ‘Keeping Kuwait Clean,’ a non-governmental organization working towards keeping beaches and parks in the city clean through volunteering. More than 70 GE volunteers and their families took part in the initiative. They cleaned the Messilla beach, with the volunteers clearing as much as five cubic meters of trash with each sweep, giving the area an aesthetic facelift.
