Dear Parents/Guardians & Students,

I am excited to welcome you all to a new and exciting school year! We will make BIG things happen this year and I can’t wait to get started! My philosophy as an educator is to create a safe, nurturing, but most importantly, FUN learning environment!

I know that Third Grade comes with some BIG changes. New teacher, new friends, new skills, new building, new office staff, new cafeteria workers, new everything! It can become a bit overwhelming the first couple of days, but if we all work together, we can make this transition smoother than Darth Vader’s helmet! (I like Star Wars, so get used to the references…)

There are also BIG expectations on our younglings and they will need our help to make sure that they are prepared to tackle everything that this year will throw at them. I will make myself as available as possible to help, to support and to ensure that we navigate this year like Han on the Kessel Run! The best way to keep in contact with me is by email (amoreno@materelementary.com) or Class Dojo, which has a messaging component that will allow us to communicate directly. More information will be given once the school year begins!

¡Estoy ansioso de darles la bienvenida a todos a un nuevo y emocionante año escolar! ¡Haremos que sucedan cosas GRANDES este año y no puedo esperar para comenzar! Mi filosofía como educador es crear un entorno de aprendizaje seguro, enriquecedor, y lo más importante, DIVERTIDO.  Sé que Tercer Grado viene con algunos cambios GRANDES. Maestros nuevos, amigos nuevos, habilidades nuevas, edificio nuevo, personal de oficina nuevas, trabajadores de cafetería nuevos, ¡todo nuevo! Puede ser un poco abrumador los primeros días, pero si todos trabajamos juntos, podemos hacer esta transición más suave que el casco de Darth Vader. (Me gusta Star Wars, así que acostúmbrense a las referencias...)  También hay GRANDES expectativas en nuestros niños y ellos necesitarán nuestra ayuda para asegurarse de que estén preparados para enfrentar todo lo que les arrojará este año. ¡Me pondré lo más disponible posible para ayudar, apoyar y asegurar que naveguemos este año como Han en la Carrera de Kessel! Class Dojo

Students will use an online behavior chart to track their behavior daily. The class dojo will be updated constantly with positive points for good behavior as well as negative points for negative behaviors. Students will be able to win rewards based on the amount of points they received each week. Parents will be able to login to see their child’s daily behavior in class. Also, the classroom dojo has a messaging component that will allow communication to occur between parent and teacher.

My hope is that this will bring you and me closer together and help you better understand the progress of your student on a week to week basis. Within the first week of school, you'll receive a login code to access your child's dojo

Academic Dishonesty Policy

Students will be expected to show integrity in all of the assignments that they complete in class and at home. Cheating will not be tolerated on classwork, homework, assessments, projects, or any assignments completed. The first time a student is caught cheating, their paper will be removed, he/she will receive and “F” on the assignment, and the parent will be notified. The second time a student is caught cheating, the consequences will be the same as the first offense and in addition, they will not be able to participate in a class activity (including, but not limited to: field trip, show, or class party). A third offense will result in the consequences outlined for the first and second offenses and a referral.

Attendance Policy

It is imperative that students are in school every day. Third grade is a critical year and every day is important. Please keep this in mind when scheduling appointments and try and schedule them after school hours. If your child is absent, please send a note within three days of the child’s absence explaining the nature of the absence. The following absences will be considered excused: student illness, medical appointment, death in the family, or observance of a religious holiday. Any absence that does not fall into one of those categories will be unexcused. Three unexcused absences will result in a referral.

Make-up Work

Please note that if your child is dismissed early, absent, or tardy, he/she will be required to make-up all examinations, class assignments, and home learning assignments. The written instructions, as well as due dates, will be provided to the student upon his/her return to school. Students who have an unexcused absence will not be able to make-up the missed assignment and will therefore receive a ZERO in the gradebook.

Política de Deshonestidad Académica

Se espera que los estudiantes demuestren integridad en todas las tareas que completan en clase y en casa. Las trampas no serán toleradas en trabajos de clase, tareas, evaluaciones, proyectos, o cualquier tarea completada. La primera vez que un estudiante haga algo inadecuado, su papel será removido, recibirá una “F” en la asignatura y el padre será notificado. La segunda vez que un estudiante haga algo inadecuado, las consecuencias serán las mismas que la primera ofensa y no podrán participar en una actividad de la clase (incluyendo, pero no se limitado a: excursión, espectáculo o fiesta de clase). Una tercera ofensa resultará en las consecuencias descritas para el primer y segundo delito y una referencia.

Política de Asistencia

Es imperativo que los estudiantes estén en la escuela todos los días. El tercer grado es un año crítico y todos los días son importantes. Tenga esto en cuenta cuando programe citas y trate de programarlas después de las horas escolares. Si su hijo(a) está ausente, por favor envié una nota dentro de los tres días de la ausencia explicando la naturaleza de la ausencia. Las siguientes ausencias se consideran justificadas: enfermedad del estudiante, cita médica, muerte en la familia, o la observancia de una festividad religiosa. Cualquier ausencia que no caiga en una de esas categorías será injustificada. Tres ausencias injustificadas resultarán en una referencia.

Trabajo de “Make-up” Tenga en cuenta que si su hijo(a) es despedido temprano, ausente o tarde, se le pedirá que complete todos los exámenes, asignaturas de clase y asignaciones de aprendizaje en el hogar. Home Learning Policy

Home learning assignments are an essential part of learning. Please, provide plenty of time and support for your child to complete the assignments. Home learning is used to reinforce the concepts and skills learned in class; therefore, the home learning assignments correspond with the lesson taught previously in class on that particular day. The students will be writing their home learning assignments in their student agenda. Please keep in mind that what the student copied from the board on that day is the most accurate and up to date assignment they have to complete. Parents, please review their agenda and homework folder on a daily basis to be aware of your child’s home learning and/or any projects that are due.

Consequences:

Students are responsible for their home learning on a nightly basis. Consequences for incomplete homework for any subject will result in a reduction in their homework grade. Students with incomplete home learning will have it logged into a “Missing Home Learning” folder. If students miss five home learning assignments in a month, they will receive a detention. If the student misses eight or more home learning assignments in a month they will receive a referral. After a total of ten missing home learning assignments in a month, the student will be issued a referral and a consequence (ex: field trip or in-school activity).

Grades

Student grades are earned, not given. We will be using the 100-point grading scale:

90%-100% = A80%-89% = B70%-79% = C60%-69% = D0%-59% = F

Students who do not turn in a graded assignment will receive a “Z” which is equivalent to two zeros. Students who are excused from an assignment will receive a “X” in the gradebook which will not affect their overall grade. The breakdown is as follows:

Tests = 60%Classwork = 20%Projects = 10%

Technology = 5%Homework = 5%

Política de Aprendizaje en el Hogar

Las asignaciones de aprendizaje en el hogar son una parte esencial del aprendizaje. Por favor, proporcione suficiente tiempo y apoyo para que su hijo(a) complete las tareas. El aprendizaje en el hogar se utiliza para reforzar los conceptos y las habilidades aprendidas en clase; por lo tanto, las tareas corresponden con la lección enseñada previamente en clase ese día en particular. Los estudiantes escribirán sus tareas en su agenda. Tenga en cuenta que lo que el alumno ha copiado ese día es la tarea más precisa y actualizada que debe completar. Padres, por favor revisen la agenda y carpeta de tareas diariamente para estar al tanto del aprendizaje en casa de su hijo(a) y / o de los proyectos que sea debido.

Consecuencias:

Los estudiantes son responsables de su tarea todas las noches. Las consecuencias de asignaciones de aprendizaje en el hogar incompletas para cualquier materia resultaran en una reducción en la calificación de su tarea. Los estudiantes con tarea incompleta tendrán que registrarlo en una carpeta de “Falta de Tarea”. Si los estudiantes pierden cinco asignaciones de aprendizaje en el hogar, recibirán una detención. Si el estudiante pierde ocho o más asignaciones de aprendizaje en el hogar en un mes, recibirán una referencia. Después de un total de diez asignaciones de aprendizaje en el hogar faltantes en un mes, al estudiante se le emitirá una referencia y una consecuencia (por ejemplo, una pérdida de excursión o una actividad en la escuela).

Grados

Las calificaciones de los estudiantes se obtienen, no se dan. Utilizaremos la escala de calificación de 100 puntos:

Communication

The teacher’s webpage will be updated weekly. This site will describe academic focus of the week, delineate the assessments for the week, and list any supplies required for the in-class labs. Students can also visit the site to find helpful websites for reinforcing concepts learned throughout the week.

Parent Conference

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. The best way to reach your child’s teacher is through email since they are in the classroom most of the day. Parent conferences may be scheduled during teacher planning times.

Collection of Monies

Please make sure that all money sent to the teacher is always placed inside of the home learning folder on the right side. The money should always be placed in a sealed envelope with the student’s name and homeroom teachers name labeled on the outside. Please do not approach the teacher with money or have your child provide us with the money personally; the collection will take place during a regularly scheduled time in the school day.

Dismissal Procedure

Bus students will be dismissed promptly at 2:45 p.m. The class will stay in the classroom and wait for their names to be called and they will be sent to the front of the school for parent pick-up. After Care students will be dismissed to the designated area. Sibling walk-up students will wait in the classroom until the sibling arrives for pick-up. Parent pick-up and sibling walk-up will now REQUIRE pick-up decals in order to pick-up the student. Anyone who does not have a physical copy of the decal present will have to show an ID in the main office in order for the student to be dismissed.

Colección de Dinero

Padres y estudiantes de Mater Middle/High ahora REQUIEREN etiquetas de recogida para recoger al alumno. Cualquier persona que no tenga una copia física de la calcomanía presente tendrá que

mostrar una identificación en la oficina principal para que el estudiante sea despedido.
