Illustrator: Your job is to draw a story board consisting of 4-6 panels related to the poem. It can
be about something in the poem, or something that the poem reminded you of, or an element of the poem (figurative language, an allusion, the form of the poem, plot, setting, etc.) Show your picture without comment. Let the group
discuss your picture. The picture must be neat and on unlined paper.

Literary Luminary Your job is to locate a few (2 or 3) special passages or quotes in the text for your group to talk over. The idea is to help people go back to some especially interesting, powerful, funny, puzzling, or important sections of the reading and think about them more carefully. Look for examples of figurative language or very effective word
choice. Write down the passages and then, in a well-developed paragraph, explain how these passages add to the mood or meaning of the poem.

StructuralistYour role is to find passages where something interesting is happening with the poem’s structure (stanzas, lines, rhyme scheme, punctuation, capitalization, etc.).In a well-developed paragraph, explain how the poem’s structure contributes to the overall meaning and theme of today’s reading. You
must have a claim about how structure contributes to meaning and provide specific examples of the structural elements you are referring to.

Theme DetectiveYour job is to identify an important theme from today’s reading. Locate passages that express this theme and be prepared to point them out to your group-mates. If you notice that figurative language or structural elements of the poem contribute to your theme, feel free to incorporate them into your analysis. In 1-2 well-developed paragraphs, describe your theme and explain how it was developed in today’s
reading. Make sure to support your claim with evidence. You may use Google, NewsELA, Galileo (a research database on MyBackpack), or another source to find out more information. Write a paragraph summarizing the
information that you discovered and explain how it expands your understanding of what you read. Present your findings to your group and discuss.
*In some instances, you may want to bring in another poem or piece of literature to compare with the day’s reading. You would then write a paragraph comparing the 2 pieces of literature.
