  • MILD STEEL GRATINGWestern Australia 1200 x 6000 spanNew Zealand 900 x 6000 spanAll other locations 1000 x 6000 spanSmaller panels can be made on request or the abovepanels can be cut down as required.

STAINLESS STEEL GRATING As dictated by the availability of the raw material flat barusually 4000 span. Please enquire at branch.

EXPANDED METALAvailable in a range of sizes that allow for direct placementonto support steel without the need for cutting.

FIBREGLASS GRATINGAvailable in a variety of sizes suitable for cutting to suit the application usually 1220 x 3660 span.

ALUMINIUM GRATINGAvailable in panels up to 1200 x 6000.

Panel sizes noted are nominal. Dimensions will vary slightlyaccording to load bar thickness and the pattern. Exact dimensions are shown in the table on page 17.

MILD STEELRecommended for high impact, high load applicationswhere economy and strength are paramount. AS3679 Grade 250 or Equivalent.

ALUMINIUMRecommended where light weight is important and wherequality of appearance is paramount. Material 6063-T6.

FIBREGLASS (FRP)Recommended where physical properties are important.Chemical resistant. Low thermal conductivity. Non conductive. Non magnetic. Non sparking.

STAINLESS STEELRecommended where rust resistance or hygienicenvironment is required. ASTM A240 GR316 or 304.

    3

    Choose the Options

SAFETYThe slip resistance of the flooring and walkway productneeds to be considered. Standard grating comprises plainsquare edge flat bars. To increase slip resistance the following points should beconsidered on sloping walkways.

STEEL & ALUMINIUM GRATINGAlthough not mandated by AS 1657 the use of 10 x 10mmsquare bar cleats or abrasive strips can be used foradditional security. ISO 14122.1 recommends cleats between10 and 20. Serrated (see page 19) grating can bespecified. Stainless steel and any bars 20mm deep will notbe serrated.

In addition both steel and aluminium grating can improvetheir slip resistance by setting the direction of walking over

the floor parallel to the loadbars. In steel grating there isbetter slip resistance in patterns with 100mm cross rodcentres. i.e. Pattern A and C.

FIBREGLASS GRATING (FRP)FRP grating is normally provided with an antiskid surface. This is a coarse grit that is embedded into the top surfaceof the grating. Plain top surface is available.

EXPANDED METALSlip resistance is improved if the direction of walking is parallel to the Short Way Mesh (SWM).

  • 4Example of Coding

    1. Use the Quick Guide on page 1 and add the options for Material, Top Surface, Treatment/Colours and Panel size (if required) on page 3.

    or

    2. Choose a pattern from page 2 and choose a Load Bar from the Load Deflection Table on pages 6 & 7. Add the options on page 3.

    3. Panel size suffix should be stated only if you want a stock panel.

For example, A325MPU2 for an untreated stock panel 1200 x 6000.

For Fabricated grating the code would read A325MPU.

    4. Specify whether the grating is to be Banded or Cut To Size Only by referring to the Terminology on page 19.

    5. Nominate the number of panels required and provide dimensions for width and span of each panel. Span is always the last dimension.

    6. Where large floor areas are required provide a drawing of the area to be covered showing:

    a) Dimensions.

    b) Span.

    c) Section size, location of, and toe direction of the support steel.

    d) Location and size of cut outs and removable areas.

    e) Location of kick plate and nosings.

    f) Indicate if penetrations are required to be split.

    7. Specify fastener type if required. See pages 14 & 15.

Span Direction Grating and expanded metal have to be supported in a specific way. The direction that the load bars run is the

important direction for grating and is referred to as the span.

For expanded metal the span is in the direction of the strands or Long Way Mesh (LWM).

Span is always the last dimension given when referencing a panel size.

Grating and expanded metal have to be supported 90 to the span direction and do not require support on theother sides.

    HOW TO ORDER EXPANDED METAL

FEATURES/BENEFITSExpanded metal is one continuous single sheet of meshproduced when a flat metal plate is sheared and stretched butis left intact at the knuckles. It is available in a variety ofthicknesses with differing sizes and designs of the apertures.

The strands and knuckles are set at a uniform angle to theplane of the sheet. This adds strength and rigidity anddistributes the load to the supporting frames.

Because there are no welds or joins it operates as a structuralmember that distributes loads evenly over a wide area.

The high strength to weight ratio makes it suitable for manyindustrial and ornamental applications.

No loose strands or welds means minimal deterioration fromconstant exposure or movement.

A further feature is the provision of an excellent anti-slipsurface. This makes the product suitable for ramps (e.g. inclinedwalkways adjacent to conveyors) platforms and stair treads.

The open nature of the product provides good visibility throughthe mesh as well as the easy passage of air and sound whilstensuring security and protection.

  • CROSS ROD

In mild steel this is a twistedsquare bar forged into thetop of the load bar.

In stainless steel grating thisis a round bar forged into thetop of the load bar.

In aluminium this is a squarebar inserted through punchedholes in the load bar andswaged to hold it in position.

    BANDED

Refers to the process ofwelding a flat bar (normally 5mm) to the loadbars afterthey have been cut to size toprovide a uniform appearancearound all sides of a gratingpanel. This process also helpsprevent injury from lacerationduring installation and assistsin keeping the panels flat.

    SERRATIONS

Small notches made in thetop edge of the load bar toassist in slip resistance.

    NOSING

A member attached to or onthe leading edge of a stairtread or at the top of a flightof stairs to assist slipresistance and to give a clearvisual indication of the edgeof the stairtreads.

    Can be

    Abrasive

    Floor Plate

    KICK PLATE

Heavy section flat bar weldedto ends or sides of panels andaround cut outs, etc. whenspecified. Top edge to be100mm above grating generallyand is typically 130 x 6.

    CUT OUT

Grating areas removed frompanel to permit passage forinstallation of pipes, plantand structural and handrailitems.

    GROSS AREA

The total area of grating asshown on drawings usingoverall width and lengthdimensions of grating ie: WxL.

The gross area is always thearea calculated for invoicingpurposes.

    WIDTH

Overall dimension of a panelmeasured at right angles to theload bars. Always called Widtheven if greater than the length.

    Terminology - Grating/Expanded Metal

    CUT TO SIZE ONLY

Refers to the process ofleaving the panels with a rawcut edge and not banded asdescribed above.

    EXACT SIZE

Refers to the requirement tomake the panels to an exactdimension and not to beadjusted to the nearest widthacross the standard patternof the load bars.

    LONG WAY MESH (LWM)

The distance from a point ona knuckle to a correspondingpoint on the followingknuckle measured across theLong Way. LWM is the sameas span in grating.

    SHORT WAY MESH (SWM)

The distance from a point ona knuckle to a correspondingpoint on the followingknuckle measured across theShort Way.

    LONG WAY OPENING (LWO)

The distance measured from theinside of the knuckle in thelong way.

    SHORT WAY OPENING (SWO)

The distance measured from the inside of the knuckle in theshort way.

    KNUCKLE

The intersection of 2 strands. It is always the width of 2strands.

    OVERALL HEIGHT

The actual measurement ofthe height of the meshmeasured at the knuckle.

    LOAD BAR

Flat Bar from which grating is made.

    SPAN

Overall dimension of a panelmeasured parallel with load bar.

    Indicated by this symbol

    FINGERS

In FRP grating this describesa panel cut that does not runadjacent to the load bar.
