Although there issomething aboutPasadena’s City Hall thatputs its visitors in awe,

the real magic is in the courtyard. This is why it is one of the mostsought after wedding venues intown. City hall may be a place toget business done, but on theweekends, and even some weeknights, it provides the perfectbackdrop for love and romance.

"City Hall is a special place, because it was one of the firstplaces we went to before we starteddating, when I knew that I likedher,” said Aaron Cho. He and hiswife, Judith, wed last September, but for them it all began in thecourtyard at city hall — twice.

The building, designed in 1927,was inspired by the architecture ofthe Italian Renaissance. Thecourtyard features elegantly shapedfootpaths lined by beds of pink rosesand large trees. At night, thecourtyard is softly lit for pedestriansto enjoy once the hustle and bustleof the day’s work is over. Thecenterpiece of the courtyard is anelegant stone fountain.

Perhaps this is why, for almost30 weekends out of the year, thespace is used for weddingceremonies and receptions. On theweekends, it is easy to find couples

A magical play of shadow and light. A sense ofintimacy and romance. Creating the correctmood to enrich your event is as important as thefood you serve and the music you play. A delicateblend of subtle illumination that captures yourimagination will complete your perfect evening.

of all ages strolling along its pathshand in hand.

For couples to have the spot tothemselves, however, they must beon top of their game and reservethe space at least nine months inadvance, according to Richard Yee,principal engineer for the city ofPasadena. There are also number ofpermits that must be approved, which is probably the mostchallenging part of using the space.Permits must be obtained forpolice, set-up, noise level, heaters

and alcohol, so it is important forcouples to know exactly what theywant before going to the city. Leesays that city employees work hardto make the process navigable forcouples, but plans must be ready inadvance to ensure the wedding dayruns as smoothly as possible.

Couples must know in advancetechnical details, like their need forpower and security or whetherthere will be a live band performingat the ceremony or reception. However, there are also fundecisions to make, such as whetherthe couple wants the fountain infull spray or not. The rates arecharged by the hour and dependentupon whether the person is aPasadena resident or not, but thespace must be reserved for aminimum of four hours.

Details like these may take thefun out of the process, but it’s hardfor a bride to have regrets once shewalks through the rotunda into thecourtyard that has been reservedjust for her, her new husband, friends and family. It is then that theromance of the space takes hold.

After dating for two years, Chodecided to go back to where it beganfor them to ask his girlfriend toembark on another journey with him.

"Being proposed to at City Hallwas perfect,” said Judith. “I wascompletely stunned and couldn'thave thought of a better place to getengaged.”

The couple considered havingtheir wedding there too, butdecided against an outdoorwedding in the California summerheat. Instead they opted to taketheir wedding pictures there, whichis another popular use for thespace. The columns and architec-ture make couples seem as if theyhave been transported to anothercountry. In fact, photographers ofall types are drawn to the sharplines and flourishes of city hall.

“The setting is historic, romantic, beautiful and significantto our relationship,” said Judith.“It’s a very romantic place.” ■

Marjorie Petrone had never heard ofupcycling, but as the mother of threedaughters, she had to be creative. Marriedin 1960, she had a beautiful silk wedding

dress that she wanted to pass on to her daughters. “Her wedding dress was just absolutely

gorgeous,” said daughter Dina Stegon, who is alsothe ad manager of the Pasadena Weekly.

When Petrone’s first daughter, Lori, wasmarried in 1991, she decided to create moneybags, silk drawstring purses traditionally used atweddings for guests to deposit cards andmonetary gifts for newlyweds. After the wedding, the couple can save the bag as a keepsake.

Petrone asked her cousin, a seamstress, todismantle the dress then use the silk to make thelarge ivory silk bags and their drawstrings. Sheadded her daughter’s initials using parts of thedress. She had all three made at the same time —holding on to the mother’s dream that all her

daughters would eventually be married. They all were.

“The gift was spectacular!” said Stegon. WhatPetrone did those many years ago is commonly referred

to now as upcycling. “Upcycling” is a term created byReiner Pilz, owner of the German automation technology

company Pilz GmbH, to describe a more constructive wayto think of recycling materials for construction. The word is

meant to change the way we think about recycling, which isusually destroying something to create something less valuable.

In upcycling, the original item is kept intact or used to create

something that is more valuable or useful. Upcycling wedding dresses means using old wedding dresses to create

new dresses or accessories for another wedding. It is a way for the bride totreasure family heirlooms and add her own style.

There are many ways to upcycle wedding dresses, but most fall into twocategories: using wedding dresses to make new items, as the Petrone familydid, or using other material to make a whole new dress. For example, brides have found dresses on Ebay or in thrift stores and added to them.Others have used unconventional materials, such as trash bags, to createthe dress of their dreams.

For some inventive people, upcycled wedding dresses have become abusiness. Etsy.com, a website for selling handmade products, is full of

upcycled wedding dresses for sale, as well as other upcycled products. For those who like the idea of a zero impact dress or the unique style it

evokes, this is a great option. But for others, upcycling is all about takingcherished family heirlooms and giving them new life.

Beyond wedding dresses, upcycling can be employed to add the personaltouches brides are looking for. Examples are rarely touted in weddingindustry publications, but they are abundant in the blogosphere. Cost-conscious and environmentally friendly brides are documenting their ownexperiences and sharing their tips on the Internet. Blogs like junkshop-bride.com and offbeatbride.com offer unconventional examples of how touse what you may already have to make things you want.

Petrone’s second daughter took a cue from her mother for her bridal

headpiece. After seeing a picture of her grandmother’s headpiece fromwedding photographs, she fell in love with it. Luckily, the piece was still inthe family, so she took it to her seamstress to have the beads reset and thenetting attached for a veil.

“This was my sister's way of having our grandmother, who died in 1947when my mom was only 7 years old, included in her wedding and therewith her,” said Stegon.

There are ways to use old containers and potted plants for centerpieces, old headpieces and hats for the bridal veil and thrift store finds fordecorations. Even old furniture has been renewed — nearly anything canbe upcycled to bring a bride’s vision for her big day to life. ■

Each New Year’s Day, Pasadenais awash in flowers that adornfloats in the Rose Parade. But

on any day of the year, Rose City floristscan provide a vast quantity and widevariety of wedding flowers.

The area’s best florists do notoffer prepackaged weddingarrangements. Instead, they designindividualized boutonnieres, bouquets, centerpieces and otherfloral decorations for theircustomers. Floral designers typicallyschedule a consultation with thebride, at which she describes whatsort of arrangements she wants ather wedding. Consultants provideadvice about the best availableflowers and estimate the costs ofwedding arrangements, which canrange from a few hundred tothousands of dollars.

For example, Craig and LisaCardella, who own Ixora FloralStudio (35 E. Montecito Ave.,Sierra Madre; 626/355-0040,ixoraflorist.com), designed floralarrangements for a posh ceremonyat the Langham Huntington Hotel.“It cost $115,000 for the floraldecor, including $800 for eachcenterpiece,” he recalls.

Similarly, Art Bogad, owner ofThe Flowerman (2450 E. FoothillBlvd., Pasadena; 626/795-1506,theflowerman.net), and hisemployees built a bridge over aswimming pool at the home where

a wedding was being held, and thenhung flower baskets over the bridge.

But most of the weddingarrangements designed by localflorists are far less extravagant. “Weare realistic about budgets,” saysMarina Santos of Jacob MaarseFlorists (655 E. Green St., Pasadena;626/449-0246, jacobmarse.com).“During the consults, we can changethe estimates to fit clients’ budgets.”

Jacob Maarse Florists has beenproviding wedding arrangementssince 1966, keeping up with themany changes in floral fashions.Right now, Santos says, arrangementsfeaturing rocks, cacti and othersucculents are particularly popular:“This is great for the bride who lovesgardening. After the wedding, shecan plant the cacti in her garden.”

Another current trend is to hide atreasured object in a bridal bouquet.“One bride had a locket and shewanted us to place her late father’spicture in it,” explains Santos. “Weshrunk the picture down, put it inthe locket and put the locket in thebouquet. Mother-in-laws willsurprise the bride by placing afamily heirloom in the bouquet.”

At Ixora, Craig Cardella says thathydrangeas and lilies of the valleysare in demand for weddingarrangements. “Roses are alwayspopular,” he adds. “They come in somany colors that you can accommo-date any bride’s vision.”

Brad Larsen, of Brad LarsenFlorals (55 W. Green St.,Pasadena; 626/792-6167,bradlarsenflorals.com), notes thatpeonies, calla lilies and hydrangeasare frequently included in weddingarrangements. “Last summer, wedesigned a wildflower bouquet fora wedding,” he adds. “It was a verynatural arrangement.”

Larsen advises clients orderingwedding flowers to “come fullyprepared for their consultation. Gothrough pictures and magazines toget a good idea of what you want.”

Bogad says wedding clientsshould bring a paint chip to theirconsultation “to show us the exactcolor you want.”

Some prospective brides thinkthey can save money by buyingflowers and making their ownarrangements. But Bogad says thesedo-it-yourself efforts are “pennywise and pound foolish.

“I can’t tell you how many timesthe brides’ moms or best friends

come in the day of the wedding, after there is a problem with theflowers, “he says. “People should dealwith a professional florist who cando the job that needs to be done. That way, there’s less worry for thebride and the groom, who can relaxand enjoy their wedding, spendingtime with friends and relatives.”

Craig advises his clients to selectthe flowers and types of arrange-ments they most desire, regardlessof current fashion. “Trends comeand go. But there are so many colorsand varieties [of flowers] that wecan create the look you want on anykind of budget. We can get almostanything all year long.”

Santos agrees that weddingcouples should “definitely go withwhat you want to see on your bigspecial day. You want somethingthat will just take your breath away. You always want to pick flowers andarrangements that you will treasureforever and will be able to view inyour wedding photos.” ✺

When the vows have beenexchanged and thereception dishes cleared,

newly married couples will want toknow their nuptials created amemorable experience for all whoattended. That’s why, in the crushof the many details associated withpulling off a dream wedding, selecting guest favors that leavefriends and family members withan indelible memory of that day isan important and lasting part ofthe planning and festivities.

Favors can be fun and fanciful orchic and sophisticated, edible orcommemorative, depending on howa couple wants to use them. Orderingthem can be a part of the larger

services a wedding or event plannermay offer, although many brides arefinding it a lot of fun, and sometimeseven more affordable, to make theirown custom favors.

Those who don’t faint straight-away when they hear the words “do-it-yourself” will have a lot of optionsto pick from, but it’s important tokeep a few basics in mind.

1. Ask yourself, “What do I like?”Have any other favors stood out inyour mind as being particularly fun, memorable or a perfect capturing ofthe moment as you remember it? Doyou prefer favors that can beconsumed or used later, such ascandy or edibles, candles or seed

packets? Or maybe you prefer smallkeepsakes, perhaps with an engravingor photo of the happy couple. Thisshould give you a hint of where tostart.

2. Consider your theme. Maybeyour wedding will be in springtime, when seed packets, personalizedceramic pots or small gardening toolscustomized with photo stickers ortags might tie into a floral scheme tocreate a larger seasonal feel. Is it anight wedding? Maybe there arecultural influences from the brideand groom’s backgrounds that mightinspire visions of an object or picturethat could be incorporated into afavor?

3. Let someone else do the heavylifting. There are many local andonline companies that sell smallitems in bulk, which will save you the

trouble of driving to every craft storein town and buying them out of minicanning jars or purple satin ribbon ofa certain wale. In addition to the oldstandards, like Ebay.com, checkonline at sites like Beau-coup.com,which specialize in discounted itemsfor many occasions, including

weddings. It’s your wedding, take iteasy on yourself!

4. Make it personal. Nowadays, you can create customized photosand labels that, when placed on acard, jar, candle or container, turnordinary objects into keepsakesguests can cherish for a lifetime.

You can go to a copy store with anelectronic image or text of acouple, names and the date of theevent or make labels on your homeprinter. Take the hassle (andexpense) out of preparing weddingfavors, so you can focus on otheraspects of the wedding.

5. Don’t stress about it. This ismeant to be a time to treasure, sohave confidence that that spirit willshine through, no matter what favorsyou select. Also, try not to beoffended if guests leave their favorsbehind after the ceremony or justelect to not take one home withthem. A wedding can be a big, bustling affair among many peoplewho are catching up with others, so alot can and will get lost in the shuffle.

Do yourself a “favor” and leave theworry behind you when you walkdown the aisle. ✺
