Dear Friends,As you have no doubt already learned, we have a new bish-op! Our new bishop is the Most Reverend Edward J. Burns who is currently the bishop of Juneau, Alaska. In a call ear-ly in the morning of his appointment, Bishop Burns assured me of his prayers for all of the Cathedral parishioners and the people of the diocese of Dallas. Later that day, after a press conference in which he briefly articulated some pri-orities - chief of which was getting to know the people of the diocese - he did just that, making a personal visit to the Cathedral and then heading off to what must have been an incredibly hectic agenda culminating in a Holy Hour at St. Rita’s Church. My first impressions is that Bishop Burns is a spiritual, thoughtful, personable, joyful, and enthusiastic man whose words are backed up by actions. Please join me in congratulating him and welcoming him to the diocese of Dallas in general and to his Cathedral in particular.I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who worked so hard to make the Novena to Our Lady of Guada-lupe such an amazing success. Thousands of people came out to express their faith and devotion on December 12 as the Cathedral stayed open around the clock to welcome the many pilgrims who flocked here. I want to thank in a special way Fr. Sajid Lozano who with distinctive simplic-ity conveyed to us a great message of hope and joy. I also want to thank the organizers of the novena along with the many liturgical ministers who exercised their ministries with great distinction. And how can we fail to mention the extraordinary job done by our choirs, musicians, and ma-riachi. It is said that one of the things that Juan Diego expe-rienced when he was in the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary was the sound of celestial music. Well, weren't we all treated to what seemed like celestial music during our novena. My heartfelt thanks to all who worked so hard to make the novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe such a worthy and dignified celebration.Finally, as we turn our focus to the last week of Advent and light our fourth candle on the advent Wreath - the candle of love - let us prepare our hearts and homes to receive the Savior whose Nativity draws near. Indeed, “Love came down at Christmas” as one of our popular hymns goes and with this came the possibility of living each day with joy!-Fr. Rudy

Risky BusinessMatthew's Gospel today tells us Joseph was betrothed to Mary. Unlike engagement, betrothal was a bind-ing contract. The couple might wait for a year before beginning married life. Sexual activity during the be-trothal was frowned upon. If the bride became preg-nant by another man, her groom could denounce her, and she would be stoned to death. The alternative was quiet divorce. This would have saved Joseph from humiliation, but would have done nothing to protect Mary. God spoke in Joseph's dream and told him to take Mary as his wife. God named her child Jesus - the one who saves. Joseph took a risk and said "Yes" to God, without regard for the outcome. Not all women have a "just man" like Joseph to stand by them dur-ing pregnancy and birth, or the resources to cope with single motherhood or a child with disabilities. Take a risk like Joseph and commit to offering help.

Amigos,Como ya deben saber, tenemos un nuevo obispo! Nues-tro nuevo obispo es el Muy Reverendo Edward J. Burns quien actualmente es el obispo de Juneau, Alaska. En una llamada que recibí muy temprano el día del nombramien-to, el obispo Burns me aseguro de sus oraciones por to-dos los parroquianos de Catedral y de toda la gente de la diócesis de Dallas. Ese mismo día, después de una rueda de prensa donde articulo brevemente algunas prioridades, una de ellas siendo el deseo de empezar a conocer a la gente de la diócesis, hizo exactamente eso; hizo una visita personal a la Catedral durante seguramente un día muy agitado que culmino con una Hora Santa en la parroquia de Santa Rita. Mis primeras impresiones, son que el obis-po Burns es muy espiritual, pensativo, personable, alegre y entusiástico quienes palabras son apoyadas por sus ac-ciones. Acompáñeme en felicitarlo y en darle la bienve-nida a la diócesis de Dallas en general y a Catedral en particular. También quiero tomar la oportunidad de darles las gracias a todos los que trabajaron tan diligentemente para hacer nuestra Novena de la Virgen de Guadalupe un gran éxito. Miles de personas vinieron a expresar su fe y devoción el 12 de diciembre durante toda la noche que estuvo abierta la Catedral. De una manera especial quiero agradecer a Padre Sajid Lozano que con su sencillez distinta nos dio un mensaje de esperanza y alegría. También quiero agra-decer a todos los organizadores de la novena y a todos los ministros litúrgicos quien ejercieron su ministerios con gran distinción. Los coros, músicos y mariachi hicieron un extraordinario trabajo. Se ha dicho que Juan Diego ex-perimento el sonido de música celestial cuando estaba en la presencia de la Virgen María. Pues, creo que nosotros también recibimos lo que se oía como música celestial durante nuestra novena. Mi agradecimiento desde lo mas profundo de mi corazón a todos los que ayudaron a hacer nuestra Novena de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe una ce-lebración digna y hermosa. Finalmente, mientras nos preparamos para la ultima se-mana de Adviento y encendemos nuestra cuarta vela en la corona de Adviento,- la vela del amor - preparemos nues-tros corazones y nuestros hogares para recibir a nuestro Salvador cual Natividad se acerca. "El Amor Bajo en Na-vidad" como dice un himno popular dice, y con esto viene la posibilidad de vivir cada día con alegría! -Fr. Rudy

Escuela de Formación PastoralLa Escuela de Formación Pastoral empezara su nuevo tri-mestre en enero donde se ofrecerán cursos en Mariologia y Profesión de Fe. Los cursos se llevan a cabo los miérco-les, viernes y sábados y empiezan el 18 de enero hasta el 1 de abril. El costo es de $50.00 y puede registrarse en la oficina principal durante horas de oficina.

Una Situación Arriesgada El Evangelio de Mateo nos dice hoy que José estaba despo-sado con María. A diferencia del compromiso, los esponsa-les tenían toda la validez de un contrato. La pareja podía esperar hasta un año antes de comenzar su vida matrimo-nial. La actividad sexual durante este periodo no se veía bien. No todas las mujeres tienen un "hombre justo" como José que permanezca junto a ellas durante el embarazo y a la hora de dar a luz, ni tampoco tienen los recursos para ha-cerle frente a una maternidad siendo solteras o a un niño con discapacidades. Arriésgate como José y comprometete a prestar alguna ayuda.
