Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
Glorification is the theme of today’s liturgy. In a
world where power, money and fame are glorified,
the real meaning of the word is lost. The temporal
glorification of man excludes, by definition, the very
essence of the word when revealed by the Divine.
The transitory and human application lacks the
selfless and sacrificial element found in the Divine.
This glorification is eternal and derives its existence
from God, Himself who is love.
The glorification of the early Church is expressed in
today’s first reading from Acts. Today’s reading
discloses the return of Paul and Barnabas to Jerusalem after converting many to the new faith. Explaining
to the disciples that suffering and trials go hand-in-hand with glorifying God and the Lord, these two
appoint elders to continue the faith as they leave for more evangelization. It is clear that the agape love
they witness is sacrificial and requires all to suffer for growth. It is this Divine love that glorifies those
who embrace it, opening the doors of salvation and faith to all.
This same glorification results in the vision by John in today’s second reading from the Book of
Revelation. In this final glorification, the New Jerusalem comes and makes possible the original Divine
Intent – God dwelling with man eternally. The restoration of order is completed and chaos, sin, death and
alienation are abolished. “All things are made new” is a fitting closure for today’s reading as it unveils the
final result of the Messiah’s Divine efforts accomplished through agape. It is Divine glorification come to
fruition.
Finally, glorification is emphasized in today’s Gospel by John. Here, Jesus’ own words are used. The scene
is the Last Supper after Judas, the Betrayer, has left. Christ explains that from this point onward God and
Himself will be glorified. His own sacrificial love will bring this about and, in an effort to strengthen his
apostles, Jesus gives them a command to love each other in the same manner – sacrificial love. If they do
this, they will be glorified to the rest of the world. The Lord knows full well the problems that His
followers will experience. He takes this opportunity to reassure them that total commitment to agape
love will result in the same glorification to which they are about to be witnesses.
Holy Mother the Church uses today’s liturgy to replay that same message for us. She reminds us that we,
too, are called to be witnesses to the Divine Glorification of Jesus. Our presence in the world is His. It is
through us that the New Jerusalem will come to those of our time that desire to see it. The Church
reminds us that the task is difficult. It involves sacrifice and suffering; however, the end result is such that
no human mind can possibly envision it. Through Divine intervention, order will come where chaos, sin
and death presently exist. It is our duty, as members of the Mystical Body, to reveal that message to all.
The glorification of God is our given task as brothers and sisters of the Lord. It is through this
glorification that we, too, will be glorified.

SAINTS OF THE MONTH:
St. Cristobal Magallanes &
Companions May 21
St. Cristobal and his 24 companion martyrs (all
but 3 were diocesan priests) lived under a very
anti-Catholic government in Mexico during the
early part of the 20th century. Churches, schools
and seminaries were closed and the priests
were forced to minister secretly to Catholics.
They all belonged to the Cristero movement,
pledging their allegiance to Christ and the Church,
even though it was considered a crime to be
baptized or to celebrate Mass. These martyrs
were executed over a span of 22 years. They knew how to avoid execution but refused to pay the price for doing so. We can learn from them not to compromise our faith. Is survival the ultimate value? These saints remind us that our daily choices, especially in adverse circumstances, form the pattern of our lives.
You are invited to this special presentation by
Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR at St. John the Apostle Catholic
Church in Oregon City on Saturday, June 1st.
